Virginia trioli \ First, spin no yarn

irst, do no harm. That’s a nice credo to live by, don’t you think? Just enough “do unto others”, just enough care and responsibility (unlike dry cleaners … but I’ll save that for another day). However, it is my melancholy duty to inform you that I now believe the solemn vow that has been the North Star of guidance for the medical profession since the time of Hippocrates needs to change. “Do no harm” doesn’t cut it: how about, “First, spin no yarn”? Let me explain. Why do doctors and surgeons lowball the experience of their medical interventions, surgeries and procedures? Why are we constantly sold the pup of undergoing “just a day procedure” – a simple, easy, painless thing – only to stumble from hospital, gauzed and groggy, with days of recovery stretching before us, sometimes including a post-operative care regime that would keep a registered nurse busy for a week? After seeing yet another friend stumble through the surprisingly challenging consequences of “just a day procedure”, I’m afraid, dear doctors, dear surgeons, I need to put it more plainly – first, spin no bullshit. Someone appears to be afraid of the truth here; maybe it’s the doctors, fearing that a frank disclosure of the aftermath of the procedure will frighten the patient away from a necessary intervention. Maybe we patients demand such reassurances that we fail to hear, or

More bench More storage More style More features More finishes

inquire after, the reality of what we’re about to do. Either way, the reduction of major surgeries to small, day procedures; the rise of the outpatient rather than the long hospitalisation; the rise of self-managed care has meant that after a brief spell of surgical twilight, we alone are in charge of ourselves – and often pathetically unprepared for it. Only a day procedure. Was there ever a more perfect example of spin? I say this knowing many serious and committed medical professionals will not like being accused of this one bit. Well, tough. Language matters. Language has always mattered, and never more so than when we alarmed, anxious and often uninformed patients are spoken to in soothing phrases that include words such as “just”, “only” and “day” surgery. Let’s parse this nuggety little falsehood, shall we? In the first instance, “just” doesn’t apply, because there is no such thing as “just” a day. It’s still a day, a full 24 hours of a day, in which work or school has to be abandoned, leave has to be secured, someone found to drop off and then collect the patient (usually at the utterly inconvenient time of early afternoon). This day can even begin one day early depending on the procedure, if there’s fasting or preparation to be undertaken. And despite initial murmurings that a return to work is certainly possible, it’s highly unlikely

More choice More experience More kitchen Less $$$$$ Free Quote

you’ll be in a fit state to go back. Forget about it: the day will be lost. And neither is it “only” a day procedure, for there is the night of discomfort, and the days of recovery that then might follow, and bewilderingly you really only get a full sense of this when, post-operatively, you sit dazed and bandaged listening to the often quite complicated post-surgical care that you – or someone close to you – will have to undertake. The procedure is “only” a day-long matter to doctors because we no longer get to stay in a medical facility for more than one day. Doctors have outsourced the post-operative care – to us. Now there’s a great deal of sound evidence to show that the less time in hospital, the fewer serious infections we are likely to pick up, and everyone sleeps better in their own bed at home (just why do hospitals have to be so damn noisy?). But if you’re going to send us home for matters that would have once had us under the overnight care of a medical professional, then please do us the courtesy of telling us the truth about just how damn miserable we might be afterwards. We value your professionalism and your care, and while we might not thank you at the time for being blunt, we might not curse you so much later. \

what dog we might get if something happened to the two we already have, who are pretty much still puppies. Crazy. These arguments about things that don’t and may never exist, fictional propositions, imagined for whatever reason, may be because – and maybe this is a good thing – we’ve nothing else to argue about. My friend said he and his beloved had a ginormous screaming match when she noticed he was talking to a colleague on LinkedIn. She said the girl looked lonely and desperate and that’s how these things start. She was good-looking, and now she’s been unlinked. We’re so good at it here we’ve even invented the retrospective hypothetical; the hindsight fight. For example, if we had bought that beach house we saw for nix 20 years ago, how much would it be worth now and would we have let our extended family use it? If we didn’t fall out with such and such at that silly, drunken year-2000 party, would we still actually be friends with them? There is also such a thing here as the pre-posthumous fight, too, which is when you argue about what might or might not happen after you die. Always a fun one. Ah, the fun twists and turns you can take with a hypothetical argument. It’s much more flexible than a recurring, rehashed old barney – a hypothetical argument about something that may never happen offers lots of room for creative thought. And, one would argue, hypothetically speaking, much less emotional damage. But maybe we should discuss that a bit more … \ khall@theweeklyreview.com.au We welcome your feedback @ www.theweeklyreview.com.au/myview

here would we put a bathroom if we were going to renovate in 10 years? If I followed football, which team would I go for? If we ever got around to getting a microwave, who would be allowed to use it and could they make hot chocolate in it or not? These are the arguments we have in our house. People of a certain age will remember Claytons, and the fabulous piece of ’70s television advertising that spruiked this non-alcoholic drink as the drink you have when you’re not having an alcoholic drink. Over here, we have Clayton’s arguments, argy bargy about stuff that’s never going to happen. Fights about nothing that’s real. We argue in hypotheticals. For example: what if he ever found a vintage Holden Brougham for sale. Would he be allowed to buy it? What would we be doing if we hadn’t met each other? (He says I’d still be watching reruns of A Country Practice in a dingy share house, not that I ever did this, and I say he’d still be tapping his toes in cowboy boots behind a Fitzroy bar, serving drunks with beards and kids old enough to be his.) Would we interfere if one of the kids went out with someone we didn’t like, or had friends who were a bad influence, or if they failed a subject, or wanted to drop out of school at 15? There are always lots of hypothetical arguments to choose from when you have kids. In fact, we have hypothetical arguments about kids we didn’t even have, especially when it comes to the names we might or might not have called them, which room they’d have slept in, and what car we’d have needed to buy to fit them in. Then there’s pets. There’s an ongoing discussion about

TEMPLESTOWE \ 14 NAMBOUR ROAD

F

our years would be a relatively short time in the life of a house, but in that time, this one has had its comely image transformed. New floors, new Matrix cladding and extensions to its living zones add up to a new personality on what is, for the most part, its old footprint. Externally, this abode that overlooks the 18th tee of the Eastern Golf Club has shed every vestige of its former street presence. Huge, boxed-out windows framed with Matrix cladding panels are the stand-out features of the façade. These are picture windows installed with fixed and wind-out panes. Internally, the living spaces have been rejigged with the sort of finishing touches builders are prone to add to their own houses. Yes, the vendor is a builder. He hand-cut the European oak parquetry and laid it out in double herringbone pattern. He has also hand-cut Carrara marble tiles to make a one-off splashback in the kitchen. The parquetry extends from the entry, which feels like a reception area, all the way to the open-plan kitchen and family and meals zone. This entry, separated by a partial wall from the formal lounge, is the meeting point for all the living wings in the house. To its left is the main bedroom, which has two picture windows on its southern wall overlooking the golf course, and another big square window overlooking the front garden. The en suite has a floating vanity, stand-alone bath, frameless glass shower enclosure and porcelain floor tiles. Off the entry is a study, which has a square picture window looking out to a pergola on a spotted gum deck. The lounge, a long room with another signature picture window and carpeted floor, opens to the entry. The open-plan family and meals area and kitchen also open to the entry via a sliding door. This zone has no picture windows. Instead, it has bifold, floor-to-ceiling glass doors that lead to a tiled and roofed outdoor room that is protected on three sides; the fourth side opens to the rear garden. Another set of sliding doors leads out from the family and meals room to the pergola and decking on the side of the house. The kitchen, which has an island bench topped with 60-millimetre thick Caesarstone, shares the openness of this living wing. A walk-in pantry provides additional storage and working space , while the kitchen has a 600-millimetre Blanco induction hob, a wall-oven and integrated coffee machine. Floating shelves and display cupboards with 2pac finishes make for more than adequate storage space. Upstairs are three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a lounge area. Two of the bedrooms have walk-in wardrobes and share an en suite, while the third bedroom has a built-in wardrobe. On a lower ground level is a rumpus room, a powder room and enough storage space to warm the hearts of closet hoarders. The rumpus room has a deck that links it to the garden, which is a series of terraced lawns. This is a house with personality and views that might well be called priceless – greens and roughs, lawn and trees such as are seen only on well-maintained golf courses. \ SIEW-CHING GOH property@theweeklyreview.com

Price \ $1.5 million – $1.6 million

Auction \ May 24 at 11am

Ruffey Creek babbles behind this executive property, which has a separate parents’ wing and expansive timber deck elevated over the sloping block towards the water. The rendered-brick house is built for entertaining, with formal and informal areas and a modern kitchen. There are beautiful brick-red silk drapes and well-appointed bathrooms. The parents’ bedroom, with en suite, walk-in wardrobe and a door to the poolside deck, is in a wing with internal garage access. It is next to a fifth bedroom or study so large it dwarfs the three other double bedrooms – which have built-in wardrobes – on the opposite side. The central kitchen, with metallic-look finished cabinetry, stone benchtops and European appliances, serves the meals area, family room and outdoor entertainment area. The adjoining deck juts out over the land, while there is a second observation deck below. The house includes a two-car garage, two-vehicle carport, alarm, intercom system and water tanks, and the Yarra walking trail is nearby. \ SUE HEWITT

The “Jeffery Street area”, as this pocket of land between Blackburn Lake Sanctuary and Furness Park is described in Whitehorse Council documents, is prized for its integration with Gardiners Creek. Instead of fences or footpaths, there are native trees and decades worth of thick vegetation. This elevated, single-storey house is at the Lake Road end of the street. It’s been comprehensively renovated, including freshly polished floorboards throughout and an updated kitchen. The combined living and dining room at the front of the house has lots of big windows, a new gas fireplace and access to the kitchen. The entrance leads to the kitchen in front and a long hallway off which are four bedrooms, a bathroom and a laundry. One of the bedrooms has a corner with built-in cupboard space that could be used as a walk-in wardrobe, or as bookshelves. There’s timber decking in the backyard with a transparent roof, lots of lawn, a shed, a cubby and timber sleepers leading down either side of the block. \ LEXI COTTEE

FOREST HILL \ 37 BINDY STREET A picket fence and thicket of lilly pilly hide this house from view at street level. It reveals itself gradually via a long brick driveway that continues down to the back of the block. When you do reach the front porch, you could be forgiven for thinking the house is a typical weatherboard workers’ cottage built decades ago. In fact, almost the entire house is brand new, aside from the two front rooms, which are just nine years old. The illusion is a testament to a quality build. All the new sash window frames are made from thick timber, the new floorboards seamlessly match the old, and a gas fireplace in the sitting room gives the house a warmth and solidness that usually comes with age. The U-shaped kitchen – with white Caesarstone benchtops and Smeg appliances – was installed just a few weeks ago. The house is divided into halves, one for the functional and social areas, including the kitchen, sitting and living room and an outside wired dining area, and the other for the bedrooms. There’s five in total, but four downstairs (including the main with an en suite), as well as a bathroom and laundry. The fifth is in the loft upstairs. This bedroom also has an en suite. There’s a study nook up here and ample storage space for all the kids’ project, sporting gear and family albums under

the property market report WIth Lee SaLCe Director | 04 00 77 00 99 hockingstuart Doncaster

can i reduce my environmental footprint at home? how can i make a difference?

As we grow more aware of our affect on the planet, we are constantly on the lookout for new ways to improve how we consume and conserve its resources. Reducing your household energy consumption is a great start. Broadly, this can be achieved three ways: by reducing your need to consume energy, by upgrading your existing power consuming devices and by generating your own energy.

what’s the quickest way to save energy?

Reducing energy consumption simply means using less gas and electricity. There are entire websites devoted to ways you can do this, such as switchon. vic.gov.au. Some ideas are simple, such as turning off electrical equipment at the wall, while others require greater commitment for greater results, like ensuring your home is properly insulated.

what should i do in the next year or two?

You can also save energy by upgrading your high energy using devices, such as old electrical hot water systems. Many modern systems are 5-star energy

rated. LED lighting is also far more energy efficient than traditional light bulbs.

what is a good long-term solution?

Consider generating your own energy. Solar panels are the most common form of household energy production. Victoria enjoys fewer hours of sunlight than other states, but solar panels can still produce enough wattage to reduce your reliance on the national grid substantially. There is a range of systems available, so if you find solar power appealing, make sure you do your homework.

what other options are there?

There are government incentives to ‘go green’. These include rebates to switch from electricity to gas or solar hot water, and to install water saving devices such as rainwater tanks, grey water systems, duel flush toilets and water efficient shower heads. For details visit the Victorian government website: www.vic. gov.au. Of course these measures will not only save energy - they will reduce your household bills.
