T

he voice at the end of the phone was surprisingly blunt: yes, she said, she had checked this particular employee’s references – but how could you really tell if they were telling the truth? “You can’t know if I’m telling the truth right now!” she said, and I could hear the wry smile in her voice. She’s right. I’m in the middle of the good-mummy thing, checking references for a child minder – but how can you really believe any of it? How can I know if the calmly assuring voice at the end of the line isn’t just a mate put up for the job? It’s a question that rebounds on me now, as I wonder just how honest I’ve been in giving references for colleagues and friends. It’s one of the most vexed employment issues around; how to provide an honest but fair reference for someone, but how to act in good faith with the organisation to which you are recommending? And then there’s how to get out of being asked to give a reference you don’t want to give. That’s another story. In my limited experience of childcare, it’s pretty clear that some people hear what they want to hear and disregard the rest, as Simon and Garfunkle put it. Conversations with child carers revealed minimal reference checks in some of their previous employment, so harried are some families about the need to get care. In my experience as a member of interview panels, it’s also clear that not all referees feel they can be honest. They can hold back expressing legitimate concerns about skills and abilities for fear of damaging someone’s chance of work. They can exaggerate too – helpfully, of course. And we all know that referees can be

downright dishonest if they’re trying to get rid of an outgoing employee: they have no intention of telling the next mob the real reason this person is going. Humans lie. Nothing new there. But given the ease with which you can use the new online world to falsify identity, it seems to me that the possibility these days of a truly credible referee is only a hopeful one. I don’t think I’d even trust the old letterhead and signature anymore. Still, recruitment companies love the referee. One high profile international recruitment firm offers handy hints for the all-important referee that end up revealing the unsafe nature of the system. Referees should be worded up about the job one is applying for, and should make you sound good and back up whatever you claimed in the interview – all of which sounds suspiciously like collusion to me. You should also remind your referee of your skills and achievements when you were working with them (something I would have thought they should be able to speak about without prompting). I wonder if my limited experience is any indication of the general suspicion and ultimately uselessness of many references? But short of industrial espionage, establishing the bona fides of someone, in the fugitive digital age, is going to become a game for the amateur sleuth. \

“I had everything, but i wasn’t happy. I’d sort of lost touch with what life is all about” basically. And when you think I rode my Harley to the doctor’s to find that out, it’s incredible. With the size of [the tumour] they couldn’t believe that I’d put up with that pain … still surfing, riding bikes, sailing.” Du Bois underwent a 15-hour operation. “The cancer I have is not curable; it’s manageable. I’ve got six other mild tumours in my body that we monitor. I don’t get into the whole cancer thing. I tell people that if you’re diagnosed, be positive and don’t think anything can beat you and nothing will.”

D

u Bois and Leonie experienced 13 failed attempts at IVF before they decided to try to adopt a baby from China. “I’m not well-educated, I’m not well-read about stuff. So when I found out about the one-child policy in China, I felt very passionate about trying to save a baby girl there. But it wasn’t so much about saving her, it’s about saving us. It’s about us getting a baby.” After a cancer diagnosis for Leonie, Du Bois says they were “on the bottom of the list because they deemed her to be somewhat unhealthy”. Instead, in 2009 they looked into surrogacy and travelled several times to Mumbai, India. Their twins were the result of their seventh attempt at surrogacy. “I now know more about surrogacy than most people in the country,” he says. He remembers an amazing moment. “Through the microscope I saw the sperm that we selected – the perfect sperm – into the perfect egg. I saw that happen. I’ve actually seen the moment when the two separate from one cell into two. It was extraordinary.” Bennet and Arabella were born on June 1, 2012. On The Living Room he’s made his mark as a genial problem solver. He enjoys the challenge of design and the collaboration. He has developed a bond with his co-presenters, Amanda Keller, Chris Brown and Miguel Maestre. “Amanda? Amazing, amazing and amazing. Except for my wife, Amanda Keller to me is the most beautiful, intelligent woman in the world. We have all seriously missed each other tremendously over the Christmas break. We honestly, genuinely love each other. I love watching them. I love the passion that Miguel brings to everything he does. And they’ve had to tone him down because he’s that and more. “Chris is like my elder son – that’s how I feel about him. He’s a guarded chap, Chris, but I love that now he comes to me for things that mean stuff to him. He has mentored me and helped me a lot with the TV.” Barry Du Bois has taken me around the world and back, from the Sahara to Sydney, from heartache to joy, from loss to rebirth. In our time together he has laughed and cried. His story is one of resilience, courage, persistence and love. “Everybody’s life is the sum of every day added up and I’m on the top shelf,” he says. I tell him he has a great outlook on life. He laughs. “You gotta. That philosophy has got us everywhere. You only get one shot at it.” \ pwilmoth@theweeklyreview.com.au

Temporary carers needed!

Bunk beds have become increasingly popular over the past 12-18 months because of the large variety of options and styles now available, says Forty Winks national merchandise co-ordinator Wayne Borg. “Bunk beds today feature clever storage and study options for children that were not as available a decade ago.” Design a bedroom that expresses your child’s personality, says Kristy Withers, of incy interiors, which specialises in children’s bedrooms and furniture. She suggests investing in timeless pieces that will last a lifetime. “If you start with beautiful matching basics, you can then add personality to the room with less expensive items such as cushions, throws and wall art.” \

Motoring \ Rod Easdown opts for restraint

B

eing the one in the family who knows about cars has its drawbacks. Like the time I was asked to fit a child seat. I read the instructions. I followed the directions. For two hours I struggled. It just wouldn’t get in there tight enough to make me happy. I gave up and called a Kidsafe installer. She looked at my work, shook her head sadly and said “Nup. Hardly anyone gets it right”. But she said it nicely. Fifteen minutes later, there it was. I realised later that, even if I had managed to fit it correctly, I wouldn’t have known. In the US, they have frightening data on this business. Three in four child seats over there are fitted incorrectly; more than a third of children under 13 who are killed in car accidents are incorrectly restrained. The local data is equally scary. Research suggests children who are not restrained correctly are up to seven times more likely to be seriously injured in a car accident. On an average day in New South Wales, 11 people are fined for having an incorrectly fitted seat or for having kids not properly restrained. Incorrect fitting attracts a fine of $317 and three demerit points in Victoria, and you’d most likely be pinged after a smash. One reason seats are incorrectly fitted is that it sometimes requires a lot of strength. Another is that although restraint anchor points have been standardised by car manufacturers, there’s no standardisation in the child seats themselves – so what works

for one may not work for another. It’s a point sometimes criticised by car makers. Seat manufacturers have views about car makers too, especially regarding inflatable seatbelts. These are a relatively recent idea; belts that inflate on impact, providing cushioning between the wearer and the webbing to reduce injury and especially don’t webbing burn. But they pose all sorts install of problems for child-seat makers, to child seats the point where some recommend yourself against buying cars with them fitted in the rear seats. It’s illegal, but it’s not unknown for people in a hurry to fit child seats using only the seatbelts, and not the car’s restraint anchors. Do this and you’re asking for trouble. Child seats fitted this way can have significant forward travel in a big hit, enough that the kid’s head impacts the seat in front. Professional installers can advise on when it’s best for your kid to go from rear facing to forward facing, and then to a booster. It’s handy knowledge. Research last year by Queensland University of Technology’s Centre for Accident Research and Road Safety suggests almost one in four children is moved to booster seats too early. \ reasdown@theweeklyreview.com.au

buildings and tunnel adits for EastLink. They chose the creators of the witty works of art that adorn the 45 kilometres of this huge operation and had a major and unprecedented input into this significant project. As with most architectural practices in this country, Wood/Marsh houses are their most popular product. Individual houses have been produced along with major public commissions – a rare combination. The first Wood/Marsh house to capture public admiration was the Gottlieb House in Caulfield. Its major element form is an elliptical concrete drum. For good or bad, budget considerations cancelled the gold tiles that were to cover the drum, but this intriguing house went on to receive popular acclaim (and major awards). Their Barro House in Kew is a fairytale palace of precast and in-situ concrete rising from a pool. Each of their three buildings in Domain Road represents a completely different architectural style. The Corten house was followed by Isis apartments – a truncated, red-tiled pyramid. Now, a few blocks west, their latest apartment building is a Miesian Rubik’s Cube of steel and glass. In St Kilda Road, the dramatic four-leaf clover form of their Yve apartments is yet another experiment in shape. Most architectural offices develop a recognisable style over the years. It was once said of the respected practice of Grounds, Romberg and Boyd that they developed a new style for each building. This applies to Wood/Marsh, who have been referred in other respects to that earlier practice. A significant difference is that Wood/Marsh has already lasted three times longer than Grounds Romberg and Boyd. \

andal Marsh and Roger Wood graduated from RMIT in the 1970s with honours and by the time they were 30, the pair had a practice in the Gramercy Park district of Manhattan. After leaving university and the requisite training in local offices, they formed Biltmoderne and in 1988, Wood/Marsh, and to date the firm has received more than 30 state, national and international awards. They have achieved success in the field of infrastructure, exhibition and furniture design. Their work has created two dramatic urban vistas in Melbourne, apart from EastLink. Travelling east on Burwood Highway, past Warrigal Road, their two white towers (and four lower buildings) for Deakin University, loom up and give the chaotic campus a dramatic quality. Similarly, their black, curvaceous apartment towers now define Camberwell Junction. Wood/Marsh has also managed to introduce quality into the architectural desert of Docklands. Their Tower 5, topped with its witty “boat”, strikes a waterside note while housing air-conditioning excrescences. Not far away, at Southbank, their early triumph, ACCA, stands on a prominent site along with the long-mistreated Yellow Peril sculpture. This building, an early example of Corten, or pre-rusted, steel, is a successful gallery and exhibition space. Corten appears in their later houses. It was also used in their famous Australian Pavilion in Shanghai at Expo 2010. Despite a dreary official fit-out, the brilliant building was a hit of the fair, and consistently crowded. Major public commissions are usually carried out by departments or conservative offices, but Wood/Marsh was appointed to design the sound walls, administrative

BOX HILL \ 88 RUTLAND ROAD

we love it

T

he view from this spacious house bridges the city-country dichotomy: in the distance, you can see Melbourne’s CBD as well as the treed slopes of Mount Macedon. Such are the sights from the deck that wraps around the main living zone, which is orientated north-south to maximise the advantages of good placement. This is a room of generous proportions and multiple uses; it is more than 12 metres long and more than half as wide. On two sides of this living space, multipane windows and bifold doors visually extend the internal spaces to the outside. Off the east-facing third side of this room is a study with banks of windows looking out to the garden and a water-feature. Taken together, this wing of the house combines work and recreation in a beautifully relaxed atmosphere. This living zone is one of four in the house. Two more living areas are on either side of the main entry: a family/meals room to the left and a dining/lounge room to the right. A fourth living zone is upstairs, in the form of a teenagers’ retreat serving the three bedrooms on this level. These are big rooms, but not bland, as delineation is provided by inverted-tray ceilings with edges painted in contrasting colours. Each room has its own feature, too, such as a Coonara heater in the main living room, a feature wall with gas-log fire in the dining and lounge area and a wet bar in the family and meals area. In line with the mindset of combining work and play, one of the upstairs bedrooms has built-in cabinetry that combines desk, wall shelves and drawers. All the bathrooms have been updated in the past 18 months with Villeroy and Boch fixtures. The kitchen, too, has been reinvented. Tasmanian myrtle cabinetry has timber that was hand-selected from one tree; look for the evidence in the sequential, polished notches in the floor-to-ceiling cabinet doors. The lush timber tones provide the backdrop for black Caesarstone benchtops, glass splashback and Miele appliances (900-millimetre hob, wall oven, steam microwave and plate-warming drawer). Under-bench cupboards and drawers in the breakfast bar and island bench provide more storage space in the kitchen, and there is an abundance of innovative storage spaces to be found throughout. The garage, for example, has attic storage accessed through a drop-down ladder and trapdoor, in addition to two storage rooms. This is an extra-high, triple-car garage with a workshop and a sink. Another feature in this house is the spa room, with its own roof, fixed-glass windows on three sides and a spa big enough to party in. This stand-alone room is off the side of a verandah that runs like an open passageway across the kitchen, living and main bedroom, in an east-west direction. A full-length front verandah is also to be found at the front of this house with its circular driveway and double, blackwood doors painted red and flanked by leadlight panels. From this house with its big, friendly spaces and its calming setting, the city is but a view away. In more practical terms, you can zip down in about seven minutes by car to the Eastern Freeway and cruise on to the source of that view. \ SIEW-CHING GOH property@theweeklyreview.com.au

Californian bungalows tick the “homely feel” box better than most. They’ve been around for a while – the period spans roughly 20 years, from 1910 to 1930 – but they’re so solid you could host band practice in the front rooms and a sleeping baby out back. This house is big enough to house a growing family as well as grandparents and young children without inducing claustrophobia. It’s also very pretty, with its tuck-pointed brickwork, shingles and bay window out the front. It was built in 1921, extended about 26 years ago, and again in 2000 when the second storey was built. There are a whopping nine bedrooms, five downstairs, two upstairs and another two in the backyard bungalow. There is also off-street parking for four cars. In the kitchen you’ll find Blanco stainless-steel appliances, a protruding window that lets in plenty of light, and a big pantry. There are two tiled bathrooms downstairs as well as a laundry, and another bathroom upstairs. \ LEXI COTTEE

Huge living and entertainment areas are the major drawcard of this two-storey builders’-own residence. Step down from a tiled entrance with a leadlight front door and side panels to a formal, carpeted lounge with a fireplace and built-in bar adjoining a dining room. The open-plan informal dining, family and kitchen area – the latter with a bay window, timber cabinetry and deluxe appliances – adjoins the dining area. The blushes of salmon pink and grey in the tiles used throughout the downstairs living areas are echoed in the marble benchtops in the kitchen, bathroom vanities and a huge built-in wall cabinet with shelving and cupboards in the family room. A rumpus room has a wall of windows and sliding door to an undercover terrace. Upstairs, the main bedroom has a front-facing balcony, walk-in wardrobe and en suite, separate from three double bedrooms and a family bathroom. It has zoned ducted heating and refrigerated cooling, ducted vacuuming and internal access to double garage. \ SUE HEWITT

A plaque that reads “Our Haven” sits beside the front door of this 14-year-old house – an endearing reminder of the love and attention this four-bedroom house has received. The owners have transformed it into an immaculate, modern and luxurious family house. At the front, a tessellated-tiled verandah wraps around the living and dining room; the garden has trimmed hedges, roses and young trees; and a double garage with internal access opens into the entrance. A sliding door separates the dining room and kitchen. Jarrah floors extend from the kitchen into the big rumpus room, which has several windows, a drop-down screen and theatre projector. The kitchen has granite benchtops, clean white cupboards, Blanco appliances and a pitched ceiling. A paved and very private courtyard is just beyond the kitchen. Three bedrooms and a study are on the south-western side. They share a bathroom and separate toilet between them. The main bedroom has an en suite, walk-in wardrobe and private porch. \ LEXI COTTEE

A neat French-style garden of winding brick pathways, hedges and roses adds to the charm of this pretty weatherboard house. The corner block straddles Station and Inglis streets, with its street frontage aligned to the east and car access dedicated to the more traffic-friendly Inglis Street. The house was built in the 1950s and is incredibly well maintained inside and out. Dark-stained timber floors match timber architraves and window frames. The front door leads to an L-shaped hallway off which you’ll find the two bedrooms down one end and social areas at the other. The living room has an open fireplace surrounded by slate tiles. This room is ringed with windows and glass doors that lead to a deep balcony, so there’s plenty of light through the day. The open-plan dining and kitchen also opens onto this decked area, which is covered by a clear corrugated sheet to ensure year-round usage. An update to the kitchen replaced the old and tired with classic, country style cream cupboards, polished timber benchtops and stainless-steel appliances. \ LEXI COTTEE

DONCASTER EAST \ 27 WOODLEA STREET Family life in this two-storey property hums in the rear living area, overlooking the pool and sun-bed deck that is shaded by towering palms and fruit trees. Conversely, if you are looking to have stability, independence and full control over your property, buying can be very rewarding. wHat are tHe benefIts of rentIng? If you choose to rent, the initial financial outlay is much lower than it is when you buy a home. You do not need a deposit to rent a home and rent payments are often much lower than mortgage repayments so renting can be a great way to ensure you have the best possible housing with the lowest immediate costs. Renting also offers lower costs in terms of rates, repairs and maintenance on a property, as these all fall to the landlord to pay.

wHat are tHe benefIts of buyIng? Owning your home also offers great advantages: you are free to renovate, change and upgrade your home however you see fit (in accordance with the law, of course). Many homeowners also prefer the stability of owning their home. Buying also leaves homeowners with an asset as a return on their investment once the mortgage is paid. Owning a home offers security and independence. Your home is yours, to do with as you please as long as permits and the law allow.
