FReeZA JOLLY GOOD ... Manningham YMCA has received $72,000 from the state government to continue running its FReeZA music program for young people who live, work and study in the municipality. The Manningham group was one of 80 across the state to receive grants for next year totalling $2.4 million. “FReeZA has been a launching pad for many young people to enter the music and entertainment industry, while over the years several hundred thousand young people have also had the opportunity to attend live music events in a safe and supervised environment,” Minister for Youth Affairs Ryan Smith said. Last year, Victorian FReeZA committees planned and staged more than 400 events.
It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, especially near Chris Theodorou’s place in Templestowe. His home at 360 Porter Street, Templestowe, is regarded as one of Melbourne’s finest Christmas lights houses. With a six-metre tree and lighting displays synchronised with a newly updated soundtrack each Christmas, Theodorou spends six months programming his creations, which require about four kilometres of cabling. “Fourteen years ago, I started off with a single silhouette purchased from the supermarket,” Theodorou says. “I sat out the front and thought I could add a few more lights and make it more colourful.’’ Theodorou, a full-time soccer academy coach, says he gets messages of support from people all over Melbourne and emails from people overseas who have seen his house on YouTube. ‘‘When you’ve had a tough year working, for about a month you become a kid and this is the perfect excuse,” he says. ‘‘You get to see my imagination … what you see is what plays in my head. But I make sure that it’s all childproof and cabling is run underground.’’ With such an elaborate lights display, Theodorou is often bombarded by people keen to know the answers to two specific questions. ‘‘What do the neighbours think?’’ In fact, Theodorou says they regularly tell him they wish he had more lights. ‘‘And what about the power bill?’’ “It costs me an extra $20, if that. The way the computers run the lighting, not all of the lights are on at the same time,” he says. \
$4000 RAIseD FOR HOsPITAL Blackburn North resident Helen Williamson has raised more than $4000 for Box Hill Hospital’s oncology wards, after hosting a trivia night and launching her cookbook. As reported in TWR on October 23, Williamson decided to hold the event after hospital’s doctors helped save her life. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. “To see so many people get behind the trivia night and buy the cookbook shows there’s a great deal of community spirit out there for Eastern Health,” Williamson said.
