The 50th anniversary of the Dandenong and District Historical Society this year has rekindled memories of the Lyndhurst Halfway House. It was the Halfway House that prompted the original plea by Susan Perham in a letter to The Dandenong Journal on April 3, 1963, that led to the formation of the historical society. The Halfway House was a Cobb & Co. coaching house for coaches on their way from South Gippsland to Melbourne. The halfway house was a particular interest to me as it was at the corner of Abbotts Road, Lyndhurst Road and the South Gippsland Highway and abutted the boundary of my parents’ farm, Ryecroft. As a child, the old Cobb & Co. coach house was of particular interest to me as it was where the Melbourne Hunt Club met for members to conduct their fox hunt on our property. The hunt club’s hounds were kept at Cranbourne and the club riders were expert horsemen and women with the leader of the club always resplendent in his colourful attire. I can still vividly picture the hunts and the

excitement they created. Journal readers are being asked by the Dandenong and District Historical Society to keep a note in their diaries of the Then and Now exhibition to be launched on September 20, 2013. OUR UNSUNG HEROES

Over many decades at the Journal I have had the pleasure of writing about the then Shire of Dandenong and now the vibrant Greater City’s unsung heroes who in wartime and in peacetime have risked their lives to save others. One of these heroes was Claude Guist who conducted a printery business in Dandenong for many years. Claude was noted for rescuing people from drowning in the Dandenong Creek and he was an expert life saver and diver. Men, women, and children benefitted from his skills and often the setting for near tragedies was where the creek meanders through the Dandenong Park. Others in our community who also help in times of stress and have saved lives include our fire fighters, staff personnel and brigade volunteers, our policemen and women, ambulance officers and to fellow motorists on our roads also our neighbours and friends. \

The Silk Cut Award was introduced in 1995 to promote the making, appreciation and understanding of contemporary linocut printmaking in Australia, supporting artists and students who work with this exciting medium. One of the founders of the Silk Cut Foundation and the awards is Dandenong South businessman Gerry Ryan. This exhibition features linocut prints that Mr Ryan purchased for his own family collection. The Founders Collection features the work of leading Australian artists as well as linocut prints by school students. The exhibition also includes works by Heather Shimmen, G.W. Bot, David Frazer, Rona Green, John Ryrie and Dianne Waite. ■ Walker Street Gallery, corner Walker and Robinson streets, Dandenong. Exhibition on until Saturday August 31. he subject of this week’s road test, Holden Cruze hatchback, was largely designed in Holden’s Melbourne design studio. It’s built at the Holden plant in Adelaide, and has undergone extensive local engineering for Australian conditions. That’s not the only good news for the Australian automotive industry; the Aussie designed Holden Cruze is made in various GM factories worldwide and is being sold in more than 60 countries, where it’s generally badged as a Chevrolet. This significant Australian input in the Cruze enhances the reputation of our local engineers and stylists and will stand our country in good stead as the future of the industry shakes out over the next few years. Holden Cruze comes with a choice of three body types (sedan, hatch and wagon) four engines and in four specification levels, Equipe, CDX, SRi and SRi-V. Our test car was the sporty SRi hatchback and we found it to have just about everything we want in a midsize car. The buyer looking for a touch of sportiness in a sensible family car will love it. The Holden Cruze SRi has five-spoke 17-inch alloy wheels, a body kit comprising front and rear fascias and side skirts, front foglamps, a shapely rear spoiler, chromed grille and chrome inserts in the door handles. The cabin was welcoming and comfortable. The six-way adjustable driver and front passenger seats were appreciated. The seats have bolsters that support reasonably well in
