MY vOICE \ A moment with mArg stork 50 YEARS OF WEDDED BLISS

Carole Tyler of Hawthorn Road, Doveton, is a talented woman with many interests and attributes. Not the least of these talents is cooking. When Carole and husband Robert (Bob) recently celebrated their golden wedding anniversary, Carole made a special cake that was a replica of the three-tiered cake she and Bob cut on their wedding day. This time she added golden symbols as an eye-catching finishing touch. Carole and Bob have lived in Doveton since 1969, and have a wide circle of friends in the district. Carole, the daughter of John and Gertrude Chambers, was born in Birmingham, England. Just occasionally in conversing with her it is possible to discern a faint English accent. Bob is the son of George and Winifred Tyler,

also of Birmingham, and he spent his schooldays in his home city. “We met at a dance venue called Taboo,” Carole said. At the time Carole worked for a jewellery company. Bob she described as a “runner”, employed to run messages from one stock exchange to another. Carole has always loved tap dancing and over the years she taught many young people how to dance. She is also a skilled dressmaker. Golden Bob, who loves spending time couple: in his garden, Carole and was employed at Bob Tyler. the Dandenong Basketball Stadium in Stud Road as a supervisor. Eleven years ago he suffered a heart attack and was forced to retire. He is now 71 and Carole will be 70 in September. Carole and Bob have three children: Dean, of Cranbourne, whose partner is Sheree; David of

Harkaway, who is married to Sharon; and daughter Danielle, who lives in Doveton with husband Jamie Crott. Danielle runs DK Dance Academy in Doveton. They are proud of their 11 grandchildren and excited about welcoming another great-grandchild due to be born in January. RELICS OF THE PAST

A television documentary I watched last week on survival tools used by Aboriginals reminded me of the different tools my father unearthed when he was ploughing the paddocks at our property in Lyndhurst. The tools were tangible evidence that Aboriginals had not only roamed and hunted wildlife at Ryecroft, but also in neighbouring properties including the acreage owned by Cairns Cobb and Company. My father had a large tool shed where rifles were hung on the walls and it was there he placed his growing collection of Aboriginal tools. I can vividly recall the towering red gum trees in the bottom paddocks where the shape of canoes were starkly outlined. I can recall similar wounded red gums on our neighbours’ properties.

I wonder if any readers have similar memories? MADE IN AUSTRALIA WEEK

Dandenong storekeepers have always been noted for their innovative ideas, and during World War II these ideas were demonstrated in many inspirational and original ways. One of these ideas, according to my somewhat tattered and yellowed edition of the Dandenong Journal printed on Wednesday evening August 13, 1941, was a Made in Australia Week in Dandenong. All traders were asked to co-operate by featuring goods made in Australia and free window cards, posters and streamers were made available from Mr C. W. Russell, secretary of the Dandenong Traders Association. The organisers stressed that the competition drew attention to the wide range of goods being ‘home’ manufactured and the increase of locally made goods had grown dramatically since the outbreak of war. Interestingly, this message still resonates today, with Dandenong manufacturers and businesses reliant on people buying Australian made goods. \
