The reality When you first try Melbourne City Pilates you get a group class and an hour-long one-on-one consulation with owner/operator Ben. As well as chatting about my Pilates and exercise history, we did some muscle relaxation that made me feel freer than I have in years. The group class moves on to the reformer machines. With springs, ropes and a little carriage to sit or stand on, the machines are used in conjunction with weights, balls and resistance bands to get the best workout. Don’t be scared off by all the equipment: Ben’s an expert at tailoring everything to individual bodies and experience levels. The pay-off For a start, Reformer Pilates has the novelty factor: doing exercises on all these new gadgets and pieces of equipment is downright fun. The pain factor There will be a burn – particularly after your first few sessions. Who should do it? Whether you’re a sports fanatic recovering from an injury or someone who rarely exercises, you’ll enjoy reformer and see results. Bouncing around on the machines is faster-paced than traditional mat Pilates so there’s none of that yoga-esque drifting off. The bill Your first session, which includes a group class and one-on-one consultation, is $49. Then it’s $50 for a casual class, $45 per class if you buy five, $43 per class if you buy 10, and so on.

WOULD I DO IT AGAIN?

I’m hooked. It’s pricey, but you feel worked out and relaxed after every session. Winner! ● Melbourne City Pilates Level 4, 140 Queen Street, Melbourne 9642 5267 melbournecitypilates.com.au
