he voice at the end of the phone was surprisingly blunt: yes, she said, she had checked this particular employee’s references – but how could you really tell if they were telling the truth? “You can’t know if I’m telling the truth right now!” she said, and I could hear the wry smile in her voice. She’s right. I’m in the middle of the good-mummy thing, checking references for a child minder – but how can you really believe any of it? How can I know if the calmly assuring voice at the end of the line isn’t just a mate put up for the job? It’s a question that rebounds on me now, as I wonder just how honest I’ve been in giving references for colleagues and friends. It’s one of the most vexed employment issues around; how to provide an honest but fair reference for someone, but how to act in good faith with the organisation to which you are recommending? And then there’s how to get out of being asked to give a reference you don’t want to give. That’s another story. In my limited experience of childcare, it’s pretty clear that some people hear what they want to hear and disregard the rest, as Simon and Garfunkle put it. Conversations with child carers revealed minimal reference checks in some of their previous employment, so harried are some families about the need to get care. In my experience as a member of interview panels, it’s also clear that not all referees feel they can be honest. They can hold back expressing legitimate concerns about skills and abilities for fear of damaging someone’s chance of work. They can exaggerate too – helpfully, of course. And we all know that referees can be
downright dishonest if they’re trying to get rid of an outgoing employee: they have no intention of telling the next mob the real reason this person is going. Humans lie. Nothing new there. But given the ease with which you can use the new online world to falsify identity, it seems to me that the possibility these days of a truly credible referee is only a hopeful one. I don’t think I’d even trust the old letterhead and signature anymore. Still, recruitment companies love the referee. One high profile international recruitment firm offers handy hints for the all-important referee that end up revealing the unsafe nature of the system. Referees should be worded up about the job one is applying for, and should make you sound good and back up whatever you claimed in the interview – all of which sounds suspiciously like collusion to me. You should also remind your referee of your skills and achievements when you were working with them (something I would have thought they should be able to speak about without prompting). I wonder if my limited experience is any indication of the general suspicion and ultimately uselessness of many references? But short of industrial espionage, establishing the bona fides of someone, in the fugitive digital age, is going to become a game for the amateur sleuth. \

FITZROY NORTH \ 69 ALFRED CRESCENT A classic example of Melbourne’s boom-time architecture, this double-storey terrace built circa 1884 is – as the vendor puts it – “a true example of marvellous Melbourne”. His opinion is lent emphasis by its incredible location across the road from the Edinburgh Gardens. Having updated the house since its renovation 25 years ago, the vendor is quick to point out the enthusiasm with which the original owner tackled the design process. Period features are abundant, from the ornate marble-framed fireplaces with decorative tile detailing in two ground-floor rooms, to the internal archway framing the sitting room’s bay window and the elaborate ceiling roses and cornices gracing the 4.2-metre ceilings. The rear of the house has been opened up courtesy of the aforementioned renovation, though in keeping with the original property’s grand standing. What was once a series of sculleries and service rooms is now an open-plan kitchen, meals and living area, a good part of which juts out into the back garden in the style of an atrium. The upper level contains three of four bedrooms, the main with a wide 2.1-metre balcony overlooking the gardens. Extras include hydronic heating and remote-controlled rear laneway access to a covered single car space. \ SARINA LEWIS

Inner-city locations such as this one appeal to a varied demographic. With separate residences downstairs and up, this two-on-one-title Victorian-era property presents flexible living options. Both levels display the same floor plan, with two bedrooms up front, a bathroom preceding a kitchen and dining area, and a lounge room at the rear. Both have their own entrances, timber floors and a good flow of natural light. All bedrooms are big and have built-in wardrobes. Bathrooms are retro and neat. An external laundry and a tandem garage serve both residences. The façade is painted white and topped by a moulded parapet. Downstairs, the kitchen opens to a side pathway and rear deck. Upstairs, the lounge room opens to a large balcony with steps down to the deck. This deck segues to terracing that runs the length of the garage, so there’s plenty of secluded space for outdoor entertaining. In the zone for trams, shops, cafes and cosmopolitan culture, the property is in walking distance from the city and Fitzroy and Carlton gardens. \ KAY KEIGHERY
Set on a large corner block, this Edwardian with beautiful stained-glass windows sits in a quiet, leafy neighbourhood. Step inside and two large bedrooms are either side of a broad hallway with twin ceiling roses and a wooden arch. The bedrooms, both with plantation-shuttered windows, have wrought-iron fireplaces with white timber surrounds. The larger of the two has tall doors that hide a surprisingly deep walk-in wardrobe. A third bedroom is also generous, all of them sharing an immaculately renovated bathroom with marble-topped vanity and a deep, angular tub. The formal lounge or fourth bedroom has an even more impressive, towering fireplace with a dark wood mantel. A huge ceiling rose and layered cornicing adds more style. The vast, open-plan living space to the rear of the property has windows everywhere you look, yet another fireplace and access to a cellar. The big, white wood kitchen sits across a meals area from a laundry and powder room. The backyard has a raised deck, a lawn and a garage. \ STEPHEN A. RUSSELL

ELECTRIC BICYCLES SET TO TAKE MELBOURNE BY STORM Why choose Melbourne Electric Bicycles? • They sell quality electric bikes and accessories at the best prices. • They have Melbourne’s largest range of quality electric bicycles in store. • They don’t just sell electric bicycles; they match them to the specific requirements and size of the individual. This guarantees their customers a long-term investment. • They provide a full after-sales service, including a 3-month free safety check and service for every bike sold. • You can test ride any bike in the shop. • Their electric bikes comply with Australian Standards, making them street legal. • They also offer short-term rental of electric bicycles, ideal for a leisurely ride along St Kilda beach or the Yarra.
It is only a matter of time before quality electric bicycles become common place in Australia; one in five new bicycle sales in Europe are electric bikes. Having recently been voted “One of Australia’s best bike shops” by The Sydney Morning Herald, Melbourne Electric Bicycles in St Kilda has positioned themselves as the premier specialist electric bike store, which includes no less than 11 different brands and over 40 individual models in store. One of the biggest advantages of an electric bicycle is the ability to sit back, relax and enjoy the feeling of being pushed along or pedal like crazy, the decision is yours. You can now make hills and headwinds a thing of the past. Walk into Melbourne Electric Bicycles’ store and you’ll quickly realise you’re not in a traditional bike store. You might not initially notice the difference in all the bikes, but you will be pleasantly surprised in the friendly service and the spacious, unique and beautifully presented store. Step into their store and you’ll find bikes that would look at home on the streets of Paris or in the peloton of the Tour de France. You’ll also find bikes that you’d see on any Melbourne street, bike track or dirt trail. Look closer, however, and you will see a difference in the bikes – the latest technology lithium batteries and both hub and Bosch central drive motors that make an electric bike more fun than a traditional bike! Melbourne Electric Bicycles are located at 382 St Kilda Road, St Kilda and can be contacted on 03 9939 9894 or visit their website www.melbourneelectricbicycles.com.au
