‘Fringegroup’

Surrounded: A resident peeks out as federal police search a house in Chisholm Crescent, Narre Warren South.

Terror trail leads to a busy suburban street BY PAULINA OLSZANKA and CATHERINE WATSON CHILDREN on their way to school watched as a large contingent of police swarmed over two Narre Warren South houses last week as part of an anti-terrorism operation. The houses — in busy Ormond Road and in Chisholm Crescent — were among 12 in the southeastern suburbs raided early on Wednesday by the Australian Federal Police and Victoria Police. Police said they seized a number of items, including a USB stick containing violent extremist materials, computer equipment,

imitation firearms and a number of registered firearms. Adnan Karababegovic, 24, of Officer, appeared briefly in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday to face four charges of collecting documents in connection with the preparation of a terrorist act. He was remanded in custody. On Friday, a spokeswoman for the Australian Federal Police said no one else had been arrested. She said several more search warrants were executed on Thursday but would not say where. The Ormond Road house, opposite the Amberley Park shopping centre, is directly in front of a

school crossing and children stopped to watch the action. A resident, who did not wish to be named, said the house was surrounded by a large number of federal police. ‘‘They were all plain police cars — no marked cars — and at least three had NSW plates.’’ An ambulance was seen leaving the Ormond Road house during the search. Ambulance Victoria confirmed a person was taken to Casey Hospital but would give no further details. Police also searched properties in Hallam, Officer, Springvale South, Noble Park and Craigieburn during the raids.

MUSLIM leaders have distanced themselves from a fringe group targeted in anti-terrorism raids across the south-eastern suburbs last week. Neil Aykan, general manager of the Islamic Council of Victoria, said he hadn’t heard of the Al Furqan group before last week. ‘‘It seems to be a little shop in Springvale; a very small group of young men who don’t represent any particular sect or school of thought. I’d say the group is more bark than bite.’’ Mr Aykan said he wasn’t familiar with the group’s ‘‘world view’’ as espoused on its website and Facebook site. ‘‘They seem to have so much time on their hands. They have hardliner attitudes. They seem to be in their 20s, single, male, possibly unemployed and alienated.’’ Mr Aykan said he doubted there would be a general backlash against the Islamic community as a result of the raids. ‘‘The community, as a whole, has matured since 9/11.’’ The president of the Caseybased Ahmadiyya Muslim Association of Victoria, Javed Safdar Choudhary, told the Weekly he had not heard of terrorism cells operating in the south-east. ‘‘Nobody has approached or contacted us. We are a very moderate group. ‘‘I haven’t come across anyone who says violence is right, particularly in Australia where we don’t have any problems and we have basic human rights.’’ Shandon Harris-Hogan, a researcher at Monash University’s global terrorism research centre, said the group’s fringe profile fitted the mould of recent home-grown terrorism groups. ‘‘From 2004 on, these groups are from an isolated fringe of the community and broken away from a mainstream mosque.’’ He said the tip-off to police seemed to have come from within the Muslim community.

Spare those trees The Casey Significant Trees Register 2011 was approved by Casey Council and an ‘environmental significance’ overlay gave individually identified trees planning protection until May 2013. In a media release dated June 6, mayor Sam Aziz announced: “Council moves to protect significant trees in Casey.” The council lodged a ministerial amendment seeking permanent planning controls. The National Trust Casey-Cardinia Branch became aware that the council planned to remove all the significant trees in Old Coach Road and wrote to the mayor and councillors on August 6 , pleading that Casey adhere to its own planning controls. There was no response to this letter. On August 8, Cr Aziz announced that 28 significant trees in Old Coach Road would be removed in the interests of public safety. Without individual assessment, it seemed incredible that every single one of these trees should become immediately dangerous. The National Trust joined with the Residents Ratepayers and Friends of Berwick and successfully gained a Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal enforcement order that prevents the council removing all the trees. Only three nearest the house have been removed under an exemption.

The VCAT member hearing the case stated: “I do not understand his evidence to suggest there is an immediate risk of personal injury or damage to property at the present time such that the removal of the entire row would be justified.” At this hearing it was established that the council’s arborist gave the council three options — retaining the trees as they are and carrying out works in three to five years’ time, pruning the eastern property side, or removing them. Why would the council now choose the last option? Ruth Crofts, president, National Trust, Casey-Cardinia branch

I think a good spot would be outside the Lynbrook railway station, as those using the station would be able to post their mail as they go to catch the train, whatever time that was. Suicide debate: some angst, much relief BY PAULINA OLSZANKA and CATHERINE WATSON PRINCIPALS of three schools were on tenterhooks last week as Four Corners screened its investigation of a cluster of youth suicides in the Casey-Cardinia region. The program, timed to coincide with World Suicide Prevention Day, included interviews with the principals of Beaconhills College, St Francis Xavier College and Berwick Secondary College, all of which have been affected by youth suicide. St Francis Xavier principal Paul Desmond said there were lots of phone calls and emails from parents after the program. ‘‘Most of them were supportive. They were so grateful that they’d watched it with their children. Many of them — myself included — said this was the first time they had spoken about this with their children.’’ Berwick Secondary College principal Kerri Bolch told the Weekly she had consulted widely with her colleagues — at her school and with her fellow principals from neighbouring schools — about the program and the impact it might have on students and staff. ‘‘My school, St Francis and Beaconhills all sent letters home to parents last week to notify them

about the episode. We recommended that if any student wished to watch the episode, parents watch it with them. ‘‘In my letter, I listed the range of welfare support that is on hand at our school every day via our student welfare team, which includes a welfare co-ordinator, a social worker, chaplains and a nurse.’’ Beaconhills College principal Tony Scheumack said everyone was very moved by the program. ‘‘We spoke briefly about the program at assembly and had a follow-up session with counsellors for the senior students to seek their views about the program, and took suggestions about what kind of support they’d like to see.’’ A youth suicide activist site was temporarily closed following a rush of new visitors after the site was mentioned on the Four Corners program. Coming Together to Prevent Youth Suicide was set up by two students of Beaconhills College in June after they lost four friends to suicide. On Monday night, site co-founder Jessica Cummings posted: ‘‘Due to the group growing so quickly tonight we have decided to disable comments for the evening to keep the group positive and ensure each member’s safety . . . Much love to you all, looking forward to speaking again with you in the morning.’’

Lifting the spirits BALLOONS and a barbecue helped to brighten a gloomy day as students (pictured) at Monash University’s Berwick campus marked R U OK? Day. The campaign encourages people to reach out to friends, family and even strangers who

might be feeling lonely or depressed. Monash University welfare officer Rhiannon Corcoran said people in the broader community often had little access to services and relied on friends and family for support.

Chisholm Institute will shed more than 220 staff and cut 27 courses in response to a $30 million cut in its budget. Chisholm chief executive Maria Peters broke the news to staff of its south-east campuses at a meeting at Chisholm’s Dandenong campus on Tuesday. Staff have a week to apply for a voluntary redundancy. The institute has not yet disclosed how the cuts will affect individual campuses at Dandenong, Cranbourne, Berwick, Frankston and Bass Coast. However, a cabinet-in-confidence document leaked to The Age last week describes the Cranbourne campus as being ‘‘at risk’’ as a consequence of the cuts.

A man who fired shots at the Berwick home of Victorian Liberal MP Lorraine Wreford while she was asleep inside was jailed for at least six months last week. Mark Ahern, 28, was armed with a .22 calibre sawn-off rifle and wearing a balaclava when he fired eight shots into the front door and window of Ms Wreford’s house and a car in her driveway. Ahern pleaded guilty in the Melbourne Magistrates Court to reckless conduct endangering serious injury, possessing an unregistered firearm and using methamphetamines. He was ordered to pay $2200 in compensation to Ms Wreford, a former mayor of Casey.

Solar spike as deadline nears BY CATHERINE WATSON THE rush is on for Casey householders to beat the deadline for a sharp fall in solar power feed-in tariffs. The state government this month announced tariffs for excess power would fall from 25 cents to eight cents a kilowatt from September 30. The 25 cents tariff will apply to those who already have a solar system installed or who complete the paperwork for an installation by the end of the month. Metro Solar owner Anthony O’Connell said the state government deadline was a major headache for solar firms such as his Lynbrook company. ‘‘It means no one can take on any customers and it’s putting extra load and pressure on workers. ‘‘We could use extra workers over the next month but I don’t want to take them on because we don’t know what our workload will be after that.’’ Announcing the cuts, Energy Minister Michael O’Brien said the falling costs of solar panel systems and rising power prices meant households were taking up solar without the need for over-generous subsidies from other power users. Over-generous solar tariffs were being subsidised by renters and those who could not afford to install solar panels, he said.

Silver lining: Jain Lal would like to see the government offer low-interest loans for people to install solar panels. Picture: Ted Kloszynski

Mr O’Connell said that while he expected a falloff in demand after September, solar power was still a good option for householders. ‘‘Prices are at record lows to the point where some people can get a four-five-year return on their investment. The director of Australian Solar Manufacturing, Jain Lal, said the cut in the feed-in tariff would make it harder for his business but was not unexpected. ‘‘The cut in tariffs will slow down business but it

Builders get safety notices WORKSAFE inspectors issued 58 improvement notices to builders working in Casey and Cardinia during a week-long safety blitz on building sites. The notices require the builders to fix health and safety breaches or face a possible fine. During the blitz, inspectors identified another 44 issues that were dealt with on the spot. The most common issues were failure to maintain electrical tools and equipment, access to sites, site security and working at height. WorkSafe regional director Melinda Collinson said the visits to more than 100 building sites provided a good opportunity for inspectors to talk to builders about the importance of safety. ‘‘Hazards within the construction industry are often well known and can be prevented. Simple steps can make a real difference to workers and their families.” Inspectors will make follow-up visits in the coming weeks to ensure businesses have fixed the identified health and safety breaches.

will also drive down prices. Companies will start competing again. ‘‘It’s similar to when the government was providing incentives for first home buyers. Sellers just added the bonus to their prices.’’ Mr Lal said he would like to see the government compensate for the cut in tariffs by offering lowinterest loans for people to install solar panels. ‘‘Most people on less than $100,000 a year wouldn’t be able to afford $4000-5000 up front but they would be able to offset repayments with savings from solar. ’’ He said solar companies were spruiking ‘‘interest-free finance’’ but it was being built into the price at 18-22 per cent interest. The Hallam company, Casey’s manufacturer of the year in 2010, makes its own solar panels. Mr Lal said they faced very tough competition from very cheap Chinese panels. ‘‘We can’t compete on price — instead we are trying to improve our technology and provide better service and warranty.’’ Mr O’Connell said the fall in feed-in tariffs to below the kilowatt cost to consumers meant people would have to change their patterns of using power. ‘‘It used to be more profitable to feed back into the grid during the day and use the power at night. Now we say use your power during the day.’’

Battle of wits: Young minds get down to business at Cranbourne Chess Club.

Big move: Lokeshvaan does battle at Cranbourne Chess Club.

Pictures: Sam Stiglec

Old game finds new mates okeshvaan grabs his bishop and moves it diagonally across the board. His opponent pounces with his rook, nabbing it. Ouch! Lokeshvaan is unperturbed by his loss. He picks up his knight — one square, two squares — and forks the black king and rook. Was that just luck? The look of pure delight on the six year old’s face says otherwise. He knew exactly what he was doing. Charles Abrahams, who coaches Cranbourne’s junior chess players, says Lokeshvaan was a very shy child when he came to the club last year but made friends quickly through the game. As his social confidence has grown, so has his chess ability. Asked what he likes about the game, he says, grinning ‘‘Playing with other people’’. The answer is echoed in various forms by most of the 20-plus youngsters who come to the club once a week. They all play chess on their computers but nothing quite matches the thrill of playing face to face. James, 11, one of the club’s top players, plays against other people on the internet, against his computer and also in his free time at Lynbrook Primary School. ‘‘I like challenges and using my head. I like playing with other people.’’ Does he get upset when he loses? No, he says, although he does feel happy when he wins. When he loses, he reviews the game at home to see where he went wrong. Abrahams had been teaching chess for 10

The internet has made it easy to play chess anywhere at any time. But most chess players still get a thrill out of playing someone face to face. DANIEL TRAN and CATHERINE WATSON report. years before he decided to set up a club in Cranbourne. His aim, he says, is to develop a very good club for the future. The foundation of that is this group of talented youngsters. He says there are multiple benefits to learning chess. ‘‘It’s an educational game. You have to think 10 moves ahead and there are about 50 possible combinations. I try to tell the kids — when your opponent makes a move, think about it.’’ ‘‘There are certain rules — no talking while they’re playing, no picking on each other, no bullying. They learn self-control and to respect their opponent.’’ Abrahams started playing in Capetown when he was about 14 and has loved the game ever since. These days he’s too busy coaching and guiding his young players to play much himself, but he still remembers the sheer pleasure of playing. ‘‘It’s a lovely feeling when you’re in a position to win, but even then it can go wrong. When you’re playing a good player you forget everything. You only think of what’s on the board.’’ For hundreds of chess players across Melbourne’s south and south-east, chess is more than a game. Abrahams says it was difficult to become

good at chess in the 1980s, unless you were surrounded by very good players. ‘‘It’s much easier now with computers — the children learn a lot from that. They can improve quickly.’’ David Cordover, of the Waverley Chess Club, says the internet is a blessing. ‘‘If you come to a chess club, there are people who are much better than you or much weaker than you. It’s hard to finding somebody who’s at your own level to get a good game.’’ He says it’s easier to find the right opponent online. ‘‘You don’t have to go to a chess club and meet someone once a week to get your game. You can play on your phone, on the internet, and at work.’’ Now aged 34, Cordover started playing chess when he was about 10. ‘‘Most of the best players in the country are kids. I taught my kids how to play chess as soon as they were old enough to work it all out. ‘‘It just gives a sense of structure to your thought process and the ability to analyse and think about your consequences and actions. ‘‘Everyone should know how to ride a bike, everyone should be exposed to music at some point in their life, everyone should see art, every-

one should hear another language spoken, everyone should play a game of chess in their life — it’s just one of those givens.’’ Unlike Cordover, Paul Bearup, the secretary of the Ranges Chess Club in Ferntree Gully, believes chess clubs are more than relevant today. ‘‘You hear people say they’re tired of just playing on the internet and part of it is the enjoyment of across-the-table play.’’ Bearup agrees with Cordover that learning chess has a plethora of benefits for children. ‘‘It helps concentration, it helps them scholastically, it helps with problem solving. That’s why schools often recognise its value and have the children coached.’’ Croydon Chess Club president Richard Goldsmith says there’s simply nothing like facing an opponent in real life. ‘‘The human emotion of a win or of a stressful situation can only be thoroughly enjoyed when you’re face to face and get to see the wonder and enjoyment of your opponent winning or the look of an anxiety and pleasure when they’re crushed.’’

Cranbourne Chess Club meets at Cranbourne Community House, 49 Valepark Crescent, from 4.30-6.30pm every Tuesday during school term. Children and adults welcome. Cost is $5 per lesson or join the club. Details: Charles Abrahams, 0408 503 226.

Cooking with the kids Tiny Teddy cars

3-ingredient biscuits

Prep Time: 20 mins Cook Time: 2 mins Ingredients: • 100g milk chocolate, melted • 1 bag Milky Way bars (you will need 24) • 1 box Tiny Teddy biscuits, honey flavour • 1 bag Smarties (340g) Method: Set out a tray or serving plate for the Teddies. Sort the Smarties into colours and cut 12 Smarties in half with a sharp knife to use for steering wheels (keep in mind steering wheel colours need to match with wheel colours). Remove the wrappers from the Milky Way bars. Cut 24 Tiny Teddies in half at the belly button using a sharp knife. Place the melted chocolate into a resealable bag and snip a tiny corner off. Squeeze out a few drops of chocolate to glue 4 Smarties ‘wheels’ on each car then place on the serving tray. Place a few drops of chocolate on the top of each ‘car’ and sit the Teddy’s on. Place a drop of chocolate on the ‘car’ in the front of each Teddy and glue on steering wheels.

Prep Time: 10 mins Cook Time: 15 mins Ingredients: • 1 cup peanut butter • 1 cup caster sugar • 1 egg Method: Preheat oven to 180°C. Line a baking tray with baking paper and set aside. Place all ingredients into a bowl and combine well. Roll tablespoon sized balls and place on the tray. Push down each one with a fork. Bake for 10-15 minutes. Leave to cool on the tray for 5 minutes and then further cool on a wire rack. Notes: • If you mixture is a little too dry you can add a few drops of milk to moisten it. • I like to make a double batch of these so we cook once and then eat twice. • These are delicious if you spread Nutella on them and sandwich them together.

CRANBOURNE will square off against Narre Warren in the MPNFL Casey Cardinia League grand final at Edwin Flack Reserve on Saturday. The Eagles earned the right to defend their crown with a 15.20 (110) to 8.12 (60) win over a plucky Tooradin-Dalmore at Toomuc Reserve on Sunday. Eleven goals to spearhead Marc Holt was the catalyst for the victory, the league best-and-fairest clearly outpointing Samuel Watson. Holt, who also booted seven behinds and took his season goal tally to 149, said his team was ready to face the Magpies. ‘‘We just had to put all of our focus on Tooradin and get the result and we did that,’’ he said. ‘‘Today’s game was not as physically taxing as I thought it might be. ‘‘We have a great fitness base and we’ll be able to recover well and give it everything on Saturday.’’ For Tooradin-Dalmore, Ryan White had 32 touches and Beau Miller gathered 20. Seagulls ace Matt Wade was subdued, with Cranbourne continuously dragging him deep into defence. Seagulls coach Tom Hallinan said he was proud of his team’s efforts after they got a thumping at the hands of Cranbourne a fortnight ago. ‘‘That little bit of inex-

perience cost us,’’ said Hallinan, 37, who will play on next year. ‘‘They have those nuances down pat and have been together for three or four years and when we’re in moments of question we’re not quite as good at making the right decision. ‘‘It was a game of opportunities and we had to take ours more than they had to take theirs.’’ The Seagulls threatened briefly in the third term with Mark Engley booting three goals. But Justin Berry’s brilliance in snapping two majors and a further three goals to Holt gave the Eagles a six-goal buffer at three-quarter time. Cranbourne dominated the opening half with its amount of play failing to reflect in the 32-point half-time lead. A statistic told the story, with the Eagles boasting 17 scoring shots to five at the long change. Holt had five goals to half-time and Matt Rus and Ryan Davey were prolific. Last Monday night, Holt was crowned the Norm Walker Medallist for the league’s best-and-fairest player. Holt has been outstanding all season with 130 goals from just 14 matches. He finished a vote clear of Tooradin-Dalmore star and two time winner Beau Miller. Beaconsfield captain Daniel Mislicki was two votes further back in third. THE best teams in Australian basketball will play in south-east Melbourne from this Thursday night. Both the National Basketball League and Women’s National Basketball League will play their preseason tournaments at Dandenong Basketball Stadium from Thursday until Sunday. China’s development side, known as China B, will also play in the WNBL tournament. Basketball Australia officials are touting the event as the first time the two leagues have combined their preseason tournaments at the one location. The NBL tournament begins on Thursday night with games each night up until Saturday. The WNBL tournament begins a night later on Friday and on each night until Sunday. Dandenong Basketball Association chief executive Graeme Allen said the tournaments would be great for Dandenong and for Victorian basketball. ‘‘It’s becoming a regular occurrence to have these major events at Dandenong Stadium,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s a great opportunity to see our elite basketball players on court at the same time. ‘‘All the NBL and WNBL clubs will be playing in one place on the one night. ‘‘You will have four courts going with plenty of games.’’ Dandenong had originally asked WNBL clubs to come and play their preseason tournament at the stadium before last season, but a weekend when all clubs were available couldn’t be found. This year that changed. Australian WNBA players such as Lauren Jackson and Jenna O’Hea are uncertain starters for the preseason tournament as they may still be playing in the US when the tournament begins but NBL clubs are expected to field full or near full sides. For tickets to the preseason tournament contact Dandenong Basketball Association on 9734 7192 or go to dandenongbasketball .com.au for more information.

Waves find new coach to steer team PENINSULA Waves have appointed Claire Houben as their championship coach for next season. Houben takes over from Robynn Pym, who stood down after guiding the Waves to their first top flight Victorian Netball League finals series last season. Houben coached the Waves’ division one team last season and has more than 25 years’ experience coaching, with stints at association, region, state league and state levels. Before coaching at the Waves Houben coached Wangaratta in the Ovens and Murray League and coached the league under-17 representative team.

‘‘I’m really looking forward to next season, to be honest,’’ she said. ‘‘We have a lot of depth at Waves now and we had a very good season.’’ The Waves are expected to have a similar team, with the club deep in negotiations with import Mwai Kumwenda to return for a third year. Emma and Kellie Somerville are weighing up their futures and are yet to commit to the club for next season. ‘‘My goal is to definitely build on where Robynn left off — its unfortunate that she had to leave,’’ Houben said. ‘‘I will have the same championship assistants [Steve Murray and Meagan Dell] so it should all be similar. The Waves kicked off their selection trials yes-

terday with the championship, division 1 and under-19 teams to be chosen over the next fortnight. The Waves also announced Maxine Wauchope would be continuing in her role as Waves’ head coach. Fitness coach Nathan Bonney has also been signed up for a second season after impressing in his first year in the job. The division 1 team will be co-coached by Jessica Whitfort, who coached them to their first finals appearance before having a season off in 2012. Her coaching partner is yet to be announced but former South Australian player Wendy Frost has agreed to a part-time specialist

New face: Peninsula Waves’ new coach Claire Houben, right, with under-19s coach Shelley Haynes and outgoing championship coach Robynn Pym. coaching role with the team. The under-19 team will again be coached by Shelley Haynes, with Kaye Tomlinson to be a specialist coach.
