BY CHAD VAN ESTROP CASEY residents want an assurance that landfill gas being pumped between the Lyndhurst landfill and the Narre Warren power station is not putting the community at risk.

Since 1998 landfill gas has been piped from the landfill — where hazardous waste is accepted — to the power station to generate electricity.

Residents Against Toxic Waste in the South East (RATWISE) president Thelma Wakelam said a mixture of landfill and hazardous gases was piped to the power station.

She said that before 2008 hazardous and household waste was dumped in the same area at the Lyndhurst landfill. ‘‘There have been a lot of concerns regarding the Lyndhurst landfill but no one has said a great deal about the Narre Warren side of things.’’

Ms Wakelam said the power station was on the site of a former landfill that also accepted hazardous waste before closing in 1996. She said the landfill had not been lined and she had concerns gas could be leaching out. ‘‘Do the residents need to be concerned what could be in their immediate area? What could be in their yards or what their children could be playing in?’’

RATWISE is calling on the state government to develop a hazardous waste management policy to protect industry and residents. ‘‘While the government is ignoring the need for a policy, places like Narre Warren [power station] will continue to exist in close proximity to homes.’’

Ms Wakelam said a two-kilometre buffer zone was needed around the power station.

Hampton Park resident Garry Page, who has the pipeline running through his backyard, said the Environment Protection Authority needed to be forthcoming with monitoring information. ‘‘I have a fairly good idea of what is going on but don’t really know what the impact is,’’ he said.

Flood victim needs support

Re: Six drinkers banned in Casey

One of our older but more vibrant floodies from the February 2011 floods is in need of some help.

After almost 11⁄2 years, the 80-year-old lady is about to move back into her home after it had been demolished and rebuilt. She is an animal lover and lives on about 2.4 hectares (six acres) in Berwick.

She would love to bring back her few horses. We need someone who is qualified in rural fencing (post and wire) to check her fences, and hopefully tighten them or fix them. Any help would be appreciated.

She also has a tree that has been undermined by the flood and is on a dangerous lean near the house.

The tree needs to be checked and possibly removed.

This lady, as with all of our floodies, has had enormous ongoing costs associated with a long temporary relocation that is not covered by insurance and just does not have the money to cover these final steps that will get her back into her home. Re: Black Caviar: Nelly’s journey ends I have watched ‘Nelly’ [as she is called by all associated with this great horse] with the greatest of adoration and it would have been one for my bucket list to see her run in the flesh.

We are privileged to have enjoyed her presence across the world and to have witnessed a phenomenon who gave her all.

Royal Ascot has to rank as her bravest and best and I cried when I saw her trot back past the adoring crowd, lame — this is the stuff of legends.

I cried again when I read of her seemingly sudden retirement — Black Caviar news was always something to look forward to — but I admire the decision.

I’m sure she will be a gentle and great brood mare and one day I hope maybe, just maybe, to get a glimpse of her in the maternity paddocks.

Some leeway for strip parking

Education approach to tippling teens

AN alarming number of Cardinia Shire’s underage teens are consuming alcohol, a new study shows.

Deakin University researchers surveyed 143 Cardinia young people aged 13 to 15.

They found 44 per cent of 13 year olds and 66.5 per cent of 13 to 15 year olds — compared with 60 per cent across Victoria — had consumed alcohol. They reported taking alcohol from their homes and, in some cases, buying it from bottle shops.

Leading Senior Constable Sharon Patterson of Pakenham police said underage teens were often given access to alcohol by parents. ‘‘They provide alcohol in a mistaken belief it will encourage their children to drink responsibly.’’

She said underage drinking in Cardinia was in line with national averages.

The Pakenham police youth recourse team gave regular talks at school in a initiative to educate teens. ‘‘We try not to take a punitive approach. We would rather have an educational approach [to underage drinking].’’

Earlier this year Cardinia Shire councillor Jodie Owen called for the council to develop a policy on limiting packaged liquor outlets to combat alcohol-fuelled violence.

RESIDENTS forced to break the law by parking on their nature strips should remain alert but not alarmed.

Casey councillors last week decided parking officers should turn a blind eye to most such infringements, but residents can still be fined if someone complains and they can still be booked by police.

Councillors at last week’s meeting stopped short of approving a blanket exemption for residents parking outside their own homes, as Cr Gary Rowe had originally wanted.

Cr Rowe moved that residents in streets 5.5 metres or narrower — too narrow for street parking — should be ‘‘allowed’’ to park on their nature strip, provided they did not obstruct traffic or pedestrians, or cause a danger.

But Casey transport manager Paul Hamilton pointed out that it was still illegal under state government regulations.

As a result, the motion was watered down to read that council officers would ‘‘use discretion’’ in enforcing the regulation.

In essence, the new policy is little different from what has been happening in practice.

Casey has been far more cautious than the City of Monash, which has a policy of not enforcing the ban unless a parked vehicle creates a hazard.

A clearly frustrated Cr Rowe quoted a Casey Council policy from 2004 that specifically ‘‘allowed’’ residents to park outside their own homes, but following an extended discussion he

agreed to accept the revised wording.

The sole dissenter to the watered-down motion was Cr Rafal Kaplon, who wanted the exemption extended to all residential streets. He said the new wording was unnecessarily complicated and provided no real protection for residents.

The council will identify a trial location to investigate whether the community will support a special charge scheme to construct parking bays in narrow residential streets.

FOR Monash University student Dani Rothwell, volunteering has worked two ways.

Besides being a big help at community events, she has found it was an antidote for the depression she once battled.

The first-year student at the Berwick campus is one of the estimated 30 per cent of Australians aged 18-24 who put their hands up to volunteer.

When she doesn’t have her head in the books studying for a communications degree, Ms Rothwell is busy helping at organisations such as the Oaktree foundation, Australian Youth Climate Coalition, the City of Casey and promoting bands and events.

She wants the message to go out on National Volunteer Week (May 13-19) to anyone thinking of volunteering but still wondering whether they can do it.

Ms Rothwell said she began volunteering when she became a Scout at age eight. ‘‘I like to put myself out there and get to know the community and the people. I really enjoy it. It gives me a sense of belonging and I love giving back to the community and making someone smile.’’

One of the causes closest to her heart is headspace, an organisation which helps young people with mental health issues.

Having experienced depression herself, Ms Rothwell has volunteered to help launch the new headspace scheduled to open later this month in Dandenong.

She saw the effect of mental illness firsthand when a classmate committed suicide after

checking himself out of a psychiatric ward.

The waste of young lives angers Ms Rothwell. She lobbied her MP for more awareness on the issue and was approached by Casey Council to join its youth advocacy committee. ‘‘Going through depression made me a representative for people who are going through depression and how they can get through it.’’

Volunteering Australia’s communications manager Alicia Patterson said research indicated volunteering was good for people’s health and the community benefited too. ‘‘We know for a fact that volunteering has a positive effect on both mental and physical health.’’

With university studies her priority, Ms Rothwell has had to scale back her volunteering commitments for the time being, although she is in charge of organising social events at the Berwick campus. ‘‘With uni studies I can only focus on smaller volunteering work, but when I’m on long break I can commit to bigger roles.’’

But volunteering is not something that she will give up any time soon. ‘‘I need to get out there and volunteer or I know I’ll stress out.’’

Budget a dollar disappointment

BY CATHERINE WATSON CASEY Council could be excused for complaining it was short-changed in the state government’s 2013-14 budget, released last Tuesday.

The biggest disappointment was the lack of spending to tackle major problems on arterial roads.

The council’s top priority, duplicating the Monash Freeway between Narre Warren and Berwick, was ignored, as were Casey’s other major bottlenecks.

Train users were the only transport winners with new off-peak services to run on the Pakenham and Cranbourne lines every 20 minutes instead of the current 30.

The rail service increase is part of a $25 million investment over four years in the Dandenong line, with trains to run every 10 minutes along the corridor.

South Eastern Metropolitan Region Liberal MP Inga Peulich said road projects valued at $214 million were under way in

Casey. She said Casey residents would benefit from $1.2 billion in additional Victorian hospital funding statewide.

But Narre Warren South Labor MP Judith Graley was disappointed that no new beds were announced for Casey Hospital to counter a 20 per cent rise in the waiting list in the past two years.

Casey’s neighbour, Cardinia Council, scored a couple of wins in the budget.

Its best news came two days after the budget when the government announced it would allocate $11.5 million for a secondary school in Officer.

The allocation goes a long way to fulfilling the Coalition’s election commitment to build a $20 million school for families living in the south-east growth corridor in its first term.

Timbarra Secondary College in Berwick will also get $200,000 for capital works.

The budget also allocated $7.8 million for the second stage of the Cardinia Road upgrade, with the project expected to be completed by 2015.

Snooker champs right on cue Australia has had few world champions at billiards or snooker.

One, Walter Lindrum, was a 1930s poster boy alongside Bradman and Phar Lap. Two others met while playing local snooker in Melbourne’s east. DAVID SCHOUT finds where cue sport fits into Melbourne’s sports scene. obby Foldvari knows what it’s like to be Australia’s cue sport king.

The 1986 world billiards champion toured the world in the ’80s and ’90s, playing hundreds of international snooker and billiards tournaments.

During one off-season in the mid-90s, Foldvari returned home to Melbourne after a long season overseas.

It was at this time that Neil Robertson, who would later become a world-beater, was a pimply teen trying to make his mark on the eastern suburbs snooker scene.

Some shrewd recruiting by a local club led the two Melburnians together and started a relationship that, by the time they went to either ends of the earth, signalled a passing of the baton as Australia’s hope to take on the world. ‘‘There was a snooker room in Knox and at this time, in between playing in England, they asked me to play pennant for them in a six-man team,’’ Foldvari explains. ‘‘Neil was only a kid and was the No. 6.

I didn’t have any idea what he’d be like. That was my first meeting with him.’’

As Robertson moved up the ranks, the two got to know each other and toured the Australian snooker circuit together. ‘‘He used to practise all the time back then. He loved the game. You could see he was talented at a young age because he’d pot a lot of balls. He just had to refine his skill. ‘‘We used to talk a lot, especially in the long train trips to tournaments. One day his dad ran out of petrol on a trip home from Sydney, so we had even more time to talk,’’ Foldvari says with a laugh.

Then, in 2000, the two met in the Oceania snooker championship final in New Zealand.

Foldvari’s international career was winding down while Robertson’s career was just kickstarting. It signalled a changing of the guard in Australian snooker. ‘‘I was playing really well and had won the semis 8-1. ‘‘In the final I was putting him on the top cushion [the other end of the table] but he just kept potting the long ball. I didn’t think he could keep doing it but he did, and he has ever since.

He’s well known for being probably the best long potter in the world.’’

Robertson, who grew up in Ringwood, went on to win the 2010 world snooker champion and break a 30-year British stranglehold on the tournament. It was an Aussie beating the Poms at their own game, in their backyard.

Foldvari puts it into context. ‘‘The BBC televises the world championships for 10 hours a

The win put Robertson on Australia’s congested sports pages and gave the sport the air time it craved.

While cue sports like snooker, billiards and pool at present don’t seem to grab the attention of the average punter in Australia, it wasn’t always like this.

The games have experienced peaks of popularity and troughs of seeming obscurity.

Comparisons with basketball and baseball, which have also had ebb and flow popularity in Australia, are not too far off the mark.

It seems, however, that every peak comes on the back of Australian success overseas.

Foldvari agrees, and, while sitting at the bar of a quiet Moorabbin pool room, explains the heyday of billiards, starting in the 1930s with the seemingly unbeatable Australian, Walter Lindrum. ‘‘It’s a long story but to cut it short, when Bradman came along, they called Bradman the Lindrum of cricket — that’s how big Lindrum was,’’ he says. ‘‘In the ‘30s, there were three main icons — Phar Lap, Bradman and Lindrum. The public followed that story because it was an amazing story. He cut his finger off as a kid and had to change to left hand and became the world’s best.’’

He goes on to explain how snooker then started to ‘‘get big’’ in the 1970s in Australia primarily because of British television show Pot Black and another hero, Eddie Charlton.

can be attributed for popularising the modern game. ‘‘For Australia, Eddie Charlton was playing and he won it a few times. That was good TV and really good for the game.’’

Charlton became a national hero for beating the British at their own game, much like Robertson 30 years on.

Then, in 1986, Foldvari won the world billiards championship and finished runner-up to Pat Cash to become the ‘Herald Caltex Sportsman of the Year’, so popular was the sport.

The emergence of Robertson, Foldvari says, gives Aussies ‘‘someone to follow’’.

While it may be too early to assess the impact of Robertson’s win, at the very least it brought the game into living rooms across the country.

More importantly, it provided the impetus for world snooker executives to include the Australian championships — the Australian Goldfields Open — as one of 10 international ‘ranking’ events as part of the 2011 season. It was the first time international players had played for official

ranking points Down Under since 1975 and the Bendigo tournament is now part of the world snooker calendar.

Eastern Districts Pool League president Claude Welson says that at a local level, while participation has dropped slightly in recent years, demand for ‘eight-ball’ — the traditional pub game in Australia — is still high. ‘‘I don’t know why numbers have gone down,’’ he says. ‘‘There’s been a few pool halls close. I guess it [popularity] goes in phases. ‘‘Our numbers are still healthy and we have five divisions that play on a Tuesday night. We’re still ambitious and looking to expand, especially our juniors.’’

Welson says while the sport may have previously been masculine, the EDPL has about 10 per cent female participation.

And they play against the guys. ‘‘We’ve got a good number of women playing, which is great. They play against the men because it’s such an even sport that just requires hand-eye co-ordination.’’

Foldvari still fronts up for the RACV Club in Melbourne and says the local snooker competition is very strong.

He operates his own business, World Cuesport Billiard Academy, in Melbourne and offers coaching and trick shot exhibitions.

Foldvari says the various cue sport disciplines have been detrimental. ‘‘If it was one game, it’d be as big as golf. There’s too many to choose from.’’

The Australian Goldfields Open — with Robertson as a headline act — begins in Bendigo on July 8.

INBRIEF Ex-councillor in court Police will call up to 16 witnesses to testify against former Casey councillor Paul Richardson on a charge of resisting arrest. In Dandenong Magistrates Court on Thursday, Mr Richardson pleaded not guilty to the charge and indicated he would call between three and five witnesses himself. The charge relates to a fiery council meeting in April 2012 when Mr Richardson was handcuffed and led from the council chambers. The council is also prosecuting Mr Richardson for trespassing.

The case has been adjourned to October 2 for a special mention.

From ashes, words of hope and healing ‘‘MY world exploded. For long seconds I was oblivious to anything but pain. Moments before I’d been praying to stay alive, now all I could do was scream and plead, ‘Oh, God, please let me die, please let me die.’

Anything to end the terrible pain.’’

Ann Fogarty was the mother of two young daughters living in Upper Beaconsfield on February 16, 1983 when her world exploded with a ferocity that almost took her life.

Thirty years on, she has published a book recounting that terrible day and her long struggle to recover physically and psychologically.

Twenty-one people died in Upper Beaconsfield and 180 houses were razed on Ash Wednesday.

Alone with her two small daughters — her husband was caught at a roadblock unable to return home — Ms Fogarty sought sanctuary in a neighbour’s pool as a wall of flame bore down on Upper Beaconsfield.

When she and her neighbours

decided it was too dangerous to remain in the pool, they soaked blankets in water and sheltered between the pool and some large garden rocks.

Ms Fogarty used her body to shelter her daughters, who escaped unharmed. But a fireball that had raced ahead of the main fire left their English-born mother with terrible burns.

She spent the rest of 1983 in hospital and endured six years of surgery.

Her marriage crumbled under the pressure.

It was daughter Sarah who suggested that Ms Fogarty, who now lives in Narre Warren, start recording her memories of Ash Wednesday. ‘‘Sarah was leaving home and she thought ‘Right, mum needs something to do’,’’ Ms Fogarty said, laughing. ‘‘In a moment of madness I allowed her to persuaded me to start writing.

When I got sick of the whole thing I thought, I can’t stop — Sarah will be so disappointed.’’

It took Ms Fogarty 10 years to write Forged with Flames. Her prose powerfully invokes that terrible day: ‘The

The wind had intensified; the day had turned nasty. Birds were struggling to balance on branches, battling to fly at and angle to the wined. Trees were bowing low, their limbs thrashing dementedly.’

Ms Fogarty wrote by hand. In sum-

mer, she found it too distressing to write. When the manuscript was rejected by several publishers, her hairdresser — ‘‘we used to talk about my writing when I got my hair cut’’ — suggested sending it to Wild Dingo Press, a small publisher looking for true stories. ‘‘I couldn’t believe it. I didn’t think it

was good enough to be a book, but they believed in it.’’

For two more years, she worked on the manuscript with co-writer Anne Crawford. ‘‘At the point the publisher began to want the nitty gritty details I became really anxious. I needed help to get through it.’’

Forged with Flames is also about the capacity to heal. ‘‘You take it [the experience] with you through life. It doesn’t disappear but you do get through.’’

Ms Fogarty wept when she heard of the death and destruction wrought on Black Saturday: ‘‘It was heartbreaking to me because I knew the road ahead [for victims]’’.

Writing the book has given her some sense of meaning. ‘‘I feel I’ve taken the past 30 years of pain and struggle and done something positive with it, made it into something wonderful. It’s been really helpful for my journey. I’ve now got something to show for it.’’

Ms Fogarty will sign copies of her book at Dymocks, Fountain Gate, at noon this Saturday.

Fleetwood Primary School pupil is determined to do her bit to find a cure for the disease that claimed her mother’s life.

Jacqui’s mother died on Easter Sunday, just five weeks after she was diagnosed with bone cancer.

Out of her own grief, the 12 year old came up with a purpose: raise money to help research on bone cancer.

She and her best friend, Emily, approached school principal Kerry Coffey, who suggested they help with the school’s Biggest Morning Tea, an annual fund-raiser for cancer research.

Ms Coffey said the whole school community had been shocked by the loss of Sue, the mother of Jacqui and her younger brother, James. ‘‘We don’t normally involve the children in the Biggest Morning Tea but Jacqui wanted to contribute to a cure for the disease that left her without her mother.’’

With the approval of the school council, Jacqui and Emily visited every class to talk about cancer and the

Karate kids pack a punch

BY BRAD McGRATH CRANBOURNE twins Georgia and James Thornton cleaned up at the Australian Schools and University Karate Championships in Sydney last month.

The students from St Peter’s College in Sandhurst then competed in the Australian Open Karate Championships, also tasting success.

At the schools championship, the year 7 students competed in thekKumite competition in

the individual male children’s and individual female divisions respectively at the first event.

James won a bronze medal at both competitions while his sister did one place better to claim two silver medals from the two competitions.

Their father, Darryl Thornton, who coaches them, said the twins had exceeded expectations with their strong performances. “It’s a fantastic result from a very large division.’’

James and Georgia train in the kumite and kata principles of karate.

Thornton snr said the two events were held successively to allow the best competitors from around the world to compete in both.

Competitors came from as far as Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Great Britain and Russia.

Georgia and James are now focusing on training with the Victorian squad in the hope of representing their state at the national championships in Tasmania in August.

The pair also have the long-term goal of representing Australia at the 2020 Olympic Games.

Cranbourne on another good wicket CRANBOURNE Cricket Club has received a fillip with the City of Casey agreeing to fund a second turf wicket for the Dandenong and District Cricket Association outfit.

The Eagles field three teams in the turf divisions of the DDCA and with ground availability at EG Allan an ongoing concern, the commitment to a new turf wicket at Casey Fields Oval 3 has president Shaun Petrie glowing. ‘‘The conversion of oval 3 at Casey Fields to a turf wicket will provide a crucial pathway for local young cricketers to play the best possible cricket and act as a great base for them to progress and be all that they can be,’’ he said. ‘‘With our close association with Casey-South [ 22 ] WEEKLY – YOUR COMMUNITY VOICE

CASEY Comets coach Stan Webster says his team has a long way to go, despite defeating Beaumaris 3-2 in an entertaining FFV State League 3 clash at Comets Stadium on Saturday.

Webster was disappointed the Comets allowed Beaumaris, which has been winless this season, back into the contest on several occasions. ‘‘It was probably a disappointing performance although we scored three good goals. They are at the bottom of the table and we let them back into the game.’’

The Comets’ day could not have started better, with Scottish recruit Frank Gibson scoring their first goal in the fourth minute.

Gibson made it 2-0 soon after half-time with his second goal, but Beaumaris wasn’t yet done.

The visitors scored to make it 2-1 and put the pressure back on the undefeated Comets, who are desperate for a return to State League 2 next season.

Webster brought Paul Presti on and the veteran immediately had an impact, scoring the Comets’ third goal with a lob over the keeper. ‘‘At 3-1 the game should have been closed off and finished,’’ Webster said. ‘‘They got back into it at 3-2 with 10 minutes to go and we were hanging on. ‘‘Overall, it was a disappointing performance despite scoring three goals.’’

The Comets now face a daunting road trip against Nunawading City and Webster knows his team must lift to beat the in-form outfit. I hope we play much better against Nunawading because they are coming off two good wins.’’

Cavs come unglued CASEY Cavaliers had their home court raided on Sunday, the Big V Division 2 men’s basketball outfit being defeated 72-63 by a more committed Keilor team that is now second on the ladder, behind Pakenham.

The Cavs on the other hand have slipped to sixth with a 4-4 record after winning the first four games of the season.

Dylan Wayman did everything in his power to lift the Cavs and knocked down 20 points but a lack of fellow contributors cost them dearly.

Ryan Sinclair (10 points) was the only other player to score double figures for the Cavs.

Casey Cavaliers women squandered a sixpoint three-quarter-time lead to lose to Keilor 63-58.

The Cavs got a solid contribution across the board but didn’t have any answers for Jessica Francke, who scored 27 points and captured seven rebounds.

The Cavs women now face a must-win clash against Western Port Steelers at Somerville Recreation Centre on Saturday night.

The Cavs men will clash with the Steelers in the later game. The Cavs Youth League 2 men play a double header against Craigieburn Eagles (Saturday) and Southern Peninsula Sharks (Sunday).

Dolphin shines, but Vics crumble

BY BRAD McGRATH DESPITE a four-goal haul to Frankston Dolphins star Sam Lloyd, the VFL went down to the WAFL by 17 points and gave up a two-decade dominance over the West Australian team at Northam, WA, on Saturday.

The Victorians squandered a 31-point lead as the WAFL booted 10 goals to three in the second half to bring bragging rights to the west.

VFL assistant coach and Dolphins coach Simon Goosey said they had simply ran out of legs when it mattered against the more experienced WAFL outfit. ‘‘We seemed to travel all day. . . a four and a half hour flight and then an hour and a half on the bus didn’t help,’’ Goosey said. ‘‘WA picked a more experienced side and at the end of the day we made a few crucial errors.’’

The Vics lifted midway through the second term with Kane Lambert, Marcus Marigliani and Evan Panozza providing plenty of run off half-back.

Ben Warren and Chris Michaliades both kicked their second goals. Despite WAFL ace Wayde Twomey booting two goals just before the long change, Panozza and Lloyd kicked goals to extend the margin to 25 points at half-time.

Despite the VFL booting two of the first three goals in the third term to extend the margin to 31 points at the 13-minute mark, the WAFL began to dominate.

The West Australians booted the next four goals to cut the margin to 14 points by the final change and, more importantly, stay within striking distance.

Eagles come up trumps BEACONSFIELD made the most of several VFL stars being available for selection to thump Tooradin-Dalmore by 71 points at Holm Park Reserve on Saturday.

With the Eagles leading by nine points at halftime, coach Clint Evans implored them to lift and they did with ruckman Scott Meyer and Dan Mislicki dominating the midfield.

The Eagles slammed on 7.7 and held the Seagulls scoreless to have the game iced by the final change. ‘‘After quarter-time we played really well,’’ Evans said. ‘‘We read the ball really well in the third quarter and kicked some goals that we hadn’t been kicking.’’

Troy McDermott and Shaun Pollard booted seven goals between them in attack for the Eagles while Battaglian held Tooradin-Dalmore star Julian Suarez to a single goal at the other end.
