Rail link’s toxic soil sparks alarm SUNSHINE Residents and Ratepayers Association has accused the Regional Rail Link Authority of putting people’s health at risk after asbestos was found during railway works. Workers on the $5  billion RRL project last month made “a number of unexpected finds’’, according to a WorkSafe report obtained by Fairfax. It is believed asbestos was handled by unwitting workers when contractors in Sunshine dug up fragments that were not identified before construction began. The worst of the asbestos found was at Sunshine’s Anderson Road level crossing. SunRRA president Darlene Reilly

said the RRL Authority had been derelict in its duty to workers and had disregarded potential health hazards that could impact local residents. “[We are] seeking specific information of the exposure not only of asbestos but of contaminated soil and the potential for airborne risks to local residents and local businesses,” she said. “I’m concerned workers have been exposed to dangerous levels of toxic chemicals and asbestos previously identified in the soil along the rail corridor. Also alarming is the potential for health risks to local residents to exposure of airborne particles from the construction site.’’ It’s believed some of the asbestos came from a phone pit, although

the authority said the work was not related to the removal of any telecommunications infrastructure. Workers did not have training in identifying or handling asbestos, and WorkSafe was called in and work stopped after it was identified. WorkSafe’s subsequent report said more needed to be done to stop workers on the project unexpectedly working with asbestos. Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union national secretary Dave Noonan said contractors must establish a register of people exposed. He said insurance companies acting on behalf of building firms “invariably deny liability’’, trying to argue workers were never exposed to asbestos.

An RRL Authority spokesman told the Weekly that a “very small quantity of non-friable asbestos” was removed by a licensed contractor as soon as it was found. “Rail operators maintain asbestos registers, which record all known asbestos-containing assets. “Due to extensive historic use of asbestos, and the fact that it is usually buried, discovery of previously unidentified asbestos containing material is expected and work package contractors are fully prepared for such discoveries.” He said extensive soil sampling was conducted in consultation with the Environment Protection Authority before construction began.

Mural inspires to B-creative The rear wall of Sunshine’s Spectrum Migrant Resource Centre has been given a makeover by a team of young street artists. Unveiled last Wednesday, the urban artwork is the latest creation of the B-creative mural project, set up by Brimbank Youth Services to curb vandalism in areas that have ongoing graffiti issues. The Sunshine mural was created by eight young men from the Brimbank area, including Jack Spong (pictured), with support from professional mentor artists. Murals have also been unveiled at other vandalism hotspots in Albion, St Albans and Deer Park. B-creative plans to bring transform walls at Brimbank plaza and Sunshine Leisure Centre later this year.

Open pool all year: petition

INBRIEF Ex-officer guilty A former prison officer has pleaded guilty to supplying drugs to an inmate of a Deer Park correctional facility in 2010. Ayhan Soylemez appeared in Melbourne County Court on Wednesday and pleaded guilty to three charges. Soylemez admitted that as a prison officer at the Dame Phyllis Frost correctional facility, he committed an act of wilful misconduct in procuring, selling or delivering a drug of dependence to a prisoner. He also pleaded guilty to charges of possessing methamphetamine and heroin in Sunshine West in August 2010. He was bailed to reappear on August 30.

A man who threatened to kill staff while robbing sex stores and restaurants with a knife in Sunshine North, Caroline Springs and Melton has been jailed for five years. Parshe Laupata, 20, will spend a minimum two years and nine months in prison for holding up three sex stores and an Indian restaurant in one month last year. He stole a total of $6700. He also stole $100 from a takeaway pizza shop in Caroline Springs in May. Last Thursday, Laupata pleaded guilty in the County Court to five counts of armed robbery, two counts of burglary and one count of criminal damage. Splashing out: Kofi Osei has given Brimbank council a 56-signature petition to keep Sunshine’s outdoor pool open throughout the year.

congested during the busiest times. I would like to see council keep the outdoor pool open all year round. ‘‘We’d also like to see the outdoor changerooms open at all times.” Council’s director of community well-being, Neil Whiteside, said the cost of extending the operating hours would be significant. “The estimated cost of operating the outdoor pool for an additional seven months would be more than

$150,000, including staffing and pool running expenses,” he said. “The pool would need to be operated and maintained 24 hours a day, even if the pool is not open for swimming. “This includes the chemical treatment, cleaning and heating of the water; this impacts greatly on the total cost for the period.” The petition will be presented to council administrators on June 25.

School sales leave park hopes in limbo BY BEN CAMERON AN open space campaigner is relieved the former Sunvale Primary School site has been left out of plans to sell disused schools across Melbourne but remains concerned about its future. The state government last week announced that a land rezoning project will be piloted at nine vacant school sites across Monash, Casey and Bendigo to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars for public

infrastructure. The changes will allow the sites to be transformed into community facilities and residential developments. Education Minister Martin Dixon said the sites could be bought by councils or interested parties and presented opportunities for economic growth and job creation. He said selling the land would save hundreds of thousands of dollars in costs and prevent the buildings becoming magnets for vandals and dumping.

A merger with Sunshine East and Braybrook primary schools to form Sunshine Harvester Primary led to Sunvale’s last students leaving in September 2009. Save Sunvale member John Hedditch said he was pleased the school wasn’t on the ‘‘for sale’’ list, but questions about its future use remained unanswered. ‘‘We remain concerned that the only site left for a decent community park in Sunshine has yet to be confirmed

by the Victorian government as a future park site rather than a future revenue site,” he said. Mr Hedditch and fellow Save Sunvale member Sean Spencer have

called for the two-hectare site to be kept as open space since 2010, when the Education Department announced plans to offload the property. Planning Minister Matthew Guy’s spokesman said he was still working with the department and was “hoping for an outcome on the site in the near future”. As reported by the Weekly, Brimbank council has made an offer for the western portion of the site.

FOURTEEN months in detention would breed resentment and anger in many refugees searching for new lives in Australia. But for one Pakistani living in Sunshine North, detention helped him discover a talent for artistic expression. Ijaz Khalil began to paint after fleeing his home country for Australia to avoid a frightening situation. “In three years, more than 5000 innocent people [were] killed by the Taliban,” he says. “The situation is still unstable.” Leaving his mother, four brothers and little sister behind, Khalil sailed from Indonesia for Australia in August 2010. He spent more than a year in detention on Christmas Island after the boat was intercepted. “There wasn’t much to do, not many facilities, so I took to painting,” he says. The 32-year-old is one of three Sunshine North refugee artists, alongside Kaveh Mastouri and Solehi

Brimbank ramps up animal action BY BEN CAMERON BRIMBANK council has promised to work more closely with police to improve responsible pet ownership. A new domestic animal management plan approved last week includes a pledge to bolster animal management services with additional staff. A report to administrators said council officers investigated 83 reports of serious dog attacks last year. With more than 100 reports of dog aggression received each year from 2007-12, council regularly checks on 63 dogs registered as dangerous, menacing or restricted breed. Tough new state laws were introduced in 2011 after St Albans girl Ayen Chol, 4, was mauled to death by an unregistered pitbullcross, an incident described by a magistrate as “a tragedy beyond imagination”. Owners of dangerous dogs can now be imprisoned if their pets are responsible for an attack.

Council city development director Stuart Menzies said none of the 83 incidents reported last year involved dangerous dogs. “Any instances of aggression by dogs are a concern to council,” he said. “Education and promotion of responsible pet ownership will be a major focus of council’s efforts to try to reduce this number.” Other issues addressed by the plan include the breeding of unwanted dogs and cats and barking dogs, following significant community feedback. “High rates of animal abandonment and euthanasia, pet ownership education and nuisance cats were also high on the list of concerns,” Mr Menzies said. Cat and dog ownership in Brimbank is bucking a national decline, with dog ownership jumping 18 per cent between 200708 and 2011-12 (from 13,945 to 16,458). While dog complaints increased from 763 to 961 in that period, incidents of “dog attacks and

rushes” fell from 115 to 103 and noise complaints for barking dogs dropped from 320 to 280. There were more than 5400

COUNCIL administrators hope changes to the Brimbank planning scheme will help address the area’s poker machine issues. City development director Stuart Menzies said the amendments sought to limit access to electronic gaming machines in Brimbank’s town centres. “[The plan aims] to ensure that EGMs are situated in appropriate locations and premises, and that future consideration of planning applications for gaming balances the impact of gaming on the health and wellbeing of the community with any recreational and leisure benefits,” he said. “Under the planning scheme, electronic gaming machines are already prohibited in 53 Brimbank shopping centres. “This amendment includes an additional 11 shopping centres.” According to a council report, Brimbank continues to experience the highest level of municipal losses in Victoria, with $145.6 million lost on 953 machines in 2011-12.

Prison nurses stop work as pay talks break down ‘A prison medical clinic is an extremely challenging job.’ offering a rise of 15.4 per cent over four years. ANF state secretary Lisa Fitzpatrick said entitlements for prison nurses were below those offered to other Victorian nurses. “The non-payment of annual leave loading and long service leave entitlements of eight weeks at 10 years means their entitlements are significantly lower than nurses in the public or private health system,” she said. “Working in a prison medical clinic is an extremely challenging job and GEO Care Australia will be unable to maintain a stable nursing workforce if it continues to offer its nurses entitlements way below health industry standards.” — Laura Little

BY BEN CAMERON KEILOR residents hope an expansion of Avalon Airport will ease noise pollution in Brimbank skies after dark. With Avalon’s recently released masterplan revealing the “possible commencement of international services” by the end of June 2014, Keilor Residents Association president Susan Jennison is hoping the level of local late-night air traffic will be reduced. She said residents were extremely frustrated at up to 43 flights every night between 11pm and 6am. “We want the federal government to realise there is an alternative for night-time traffic,” Mrs Jennison said. “Aeroplanes are still departing from Melbourne Airport [at 12.12am].” The Weekly reported last month more than 150 residents attended a meeting with the Community Aviation Consultation Group in Keilor, amid concerns about Melbourne Airport’s plans for a third runway. NURSES at two north-west prisons will stage stop-work meetings on Tuesday in the hope of securing better pay and working conditions. The nurses from the metropolitan remand and Dame Phyllis Frost centres will be joined by colleagues from clinics at eight other Victorian prisons after enterprise bargaining negotiations between the Australian Nursing Federation and GEO Care Australia, the company that manages the prisons’ medical centres, broke down. About 60 nurses will hold twohour stop-work meetings and implement bans on administrative duties. The union said a stalemate had been reached after 18 months of negotiations, with GEO Care unwilling to back-date a pay rise of 2.5 per cent to July 2012, after the current agreement expired. Nurses last received a pay rise in July 2011. GEO Group spokesman Ken Davis said the company was

Melbourne air traffic in the next 20 years, growing 3.9 per cent annually. Avalon hopes to attract at least one major operator or new integrated freight airline. The state government has committed to build a rail link to the airport.

College fears arose in 2010

Pre-budget, residents, groups stake their claims

STAFF at Mowbray College began asking questions about the school’s financial viability about two years before it collapsed, a court has heard. The revelation came on the final day of a public examination in the Supreme Court into the closure of the school, which had campuses at Melton and Caroline Springs. The court last week heard former principal Margaret Goddard had raised concerns about the school’s financial situation and in 2010 had asked the college’s board to pass a motion that it was solvent. The school closed in June last year with debts of $28 million. In 2010, Ms Goddard notified the board she was worried about declining enrolments, Associate Justice Rodney Randall was told. Earlier in the hearing, the school’s former chairman, John Wallace, told the court he believed the school was solvent in 2010, despite Ms Goddard having voiced her concerns. Mr Wallace said he expected “our

kindergarten franchise, but this never eventuated. Some directors had hoped to raise $US100 million from a Middle East finance house to fund the venture, the court heard. Former directors Anthony KeirstenWakefield and Kevin Yates also appeared at the examination.

SUBMISSIONS to Melton council’s draft budget were voiced last week, with residents and community groups highlighting a mixed bag of concerns. A total of 40 written submissions were presented to the council and 16 residents spoke at the meeting. Many submissions were made by representatives of sports clubs, including Melton Hockey Club and Melton South Little Athletics Centre, that are in need of funding. Charity group Combined Churches Caring Melton (CCCM), which specialises in emergency food services, sought funding to relocate to a permanent site following development of its current council-owned building. CCCM chief executive Denise Morris told the meeting the organisation needed financial support from the council to be able to move. “We need to ensure that this

program keeps going,’’ she said. ‘‘We started for the right reasons – there was a need for it, there was a service gap, we met that gap.” The organisation provides emergency food relief to 300 clients a month and has 52 volunteers. Another submission came from the Brahminy Foundation, which works with disengaged young people at risk of criminal behaviour. The foundation sought $85,000 from the council to work with 15 young people in Melton. Representatives of the Coburn, Cambridge and Watts Residents’ Association spoke on behalf of 12 submissions about community issues including funding cuts to road and footpath programs. Council will consider the submissions before the final budget is presented to councillors on June 25. — Stephanie Zevenbergen

BULLDOGS legend Doug Hawkins wants voters to look beyond his football career when considering his suitability as a candidate in September’s federal election. Hawkins, 53, has joined former world champion boxer Barry Michael as part of the Palmer United Party’s Victorian Senate team. The Braybrook legend told the Weekly he was inspired by billionaire miner Clive Palmer’s passion for the country’s future and would be happy to see him as Australia’s next prime minister. “He doesn’t have to be doing this; it’s about helping the country,” Hawkins said. The former Footscray captain, who played more than 300 games for the club, said feedback on his foray into politics had been mixed. “I don’t make out I know everything about politics but I know my strengths – I’m a people person and there is an opportunity here to get involved.”

Political stand: Barry Michael, Clive Palmer and Doug Hawkins.

Hawkins’s key concerns include rising unemployment and utility prices, healthcare cuts and homelessness. “The climate tax would be changed and things with refugees need to be done better,” he said. Hawkins remains circumspect on the performance of Prime Minister Julia Gillard, the number one ticketholder at the Bulldogs since 2010. “She is trying her best for the country, I’m not going to say she is doing a good job or a bad job, but I think she’s having a crack. “If people are happy now, then they

can continue to support Julia Gillard or Tony Abbott. All we are doing is giving people another option.” Mr Palmer intends to field candidates in every House of Representatives seat and a Senate team in each state and territory. Mr Palmer said Hawkins and Williamstown resident Michael were not only great Australian sporting heroes, “they are great Australians”. “Both are proven leaders who are in touch with their communities and will make outstanding Senate candidates for our party.”

Brimbank chairman John Watson says a new reconciliation action plan will allow council to continue working to achieve a shared sense of justice for the municipality’s indigenous community. The plan, launched on June 3, was developed by the council and the Wurundjeri Tribe Land Compensation and Cultural Heritage Council. The council will establish an employment strategy, ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags are flying permanently at the council offices and create better ties between schools and indigenous people to foster awareness of indigenous history.

Brimbank’s annual hard waste collection starts on Monday, July 1. Waste will be collected from different areas over a fiveweek period, ending on August 2. Residents will receive a brochure about two weeks before their date, outlining collection details. The annual service allows households to place up to two cubic metres of hard waste on their nature strip for collection. Details: 9249 4000 or

Message from the Mayor Cr Kathy Majdlik

It would be an understatement to say it has been a big couple of weeks in the City of Melton. We have celebrated the grand opening of the much anticipated Melton Library and Learning Hub, the openings of major retail giants, Officeworks and Fantastic Furniture in Caroline Springs, as well as a special visit by international superstar Arnold Schwarzenegger. The grand opening of the state-of-the-art Melton Library and Learning Hub was a wonderful community celebration that marked a new era for library and learning services in Melton. The awe inspiring building is a tremendous asset for our community and if you haven’t done so already I encourage you to head along to discover all it has to offer. The opening of Officeworks and Fantastic Furniture in Caroline Springs is great news for the area. It comes as no surprise these businesses have chosen the City of Melton for their new stores. Our close proximity to Melbourne’s CBD, airports and port, affordable land and young workforce, make the City of Melton an appealing location to establish or expand a business. Large businesses such as Officeworks and Fantastic Furniture are a real asset for our local community. The capital injected into our local economy in the planning and building of these businesses is invaluable. They create supply chain opportunities at a grassroots level, and importantly, deliver sustainable and valuable local jobs for our residents. Last Friday we were honoured with a visit by none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger who gave a keynote presentation at Derrimut 247 Gym. During the event I presented Arnold with the key to the City in recognition of his achievements as former Governor of California, a world champion body builder and Hollywood actor and for taking the time to visit our great municipality and encouraging our residents in becoming more active within the community. Derrimut 247 Gym Director Nick Solomos has also been involved in many charity donations within the local community and is grateful that he can give back to the community.

It’s hard to believe it’s already June and the end of the financial year is almost upon us. This is always a very important time for Council as we finalise our Annual Budget, and this year, our new Council Plan 2013-2017. I am pleased that the draft Budget 2013-2014 proposes several projects and initiatives for residents in Watts Ward including the development of a Men’s Shed at Morton Homestead in Taylors Hill, upgrade works at the Diggers Rest Bowling Club and the retainment of the environmental rebate for eligible rural ratepayers. The Council Plan 2013-2017 is a blueprint which sets our strategic direction, details our key priorities and the actions that will be carried out over the next four years, in order to capitalise on the many opportunities that present themselves in our fast growing and unique municipality. The final Budget 2013-2014 and Council Plan 2013 – 2017 are expected to be adopted by Council on 25 June 2013. Last week we celebrated the grand opening of the Melton Library and Learning Hub. This is a wonderful asset for the City of Melton which boasts an impressive range of services, programs and facilities available for community use. I encourage residents to visit the Library and Learning Hub and discover all that it has to offer. Finally, the school holidays are just around the corner and as always Council has lots of events and activities on offer to keep youngsters entertained. Drivers quickly fill police dragnet

Allan Edwards said motorists should be aware that speed limits on the Melton Highway between Hillside and Melton had been reduced from 90 to 70km/h. “Police have been issuing warnings to motorists during the transition period but will now strictly enforce the new limits, and safety cameras will be operating on a regular basis,’’ he said. ‘‘It’s expected the new speed limits will reduce the number and severity of collisions along this very busy section of highway, particularly in the vicinity of the bends leading to the bridge over Kororoit Creek.”

The Brimbank municipality is strategically located between 12-20 km from the Melbourne CBD and part of the western region of Melbourne, one of the fastest urban growth areas in Australia. Brimbank is placed to play a major role in the economic, social and environmental future of Melbourne. Brimbank City Council is seeking to establish a Brimbank Charitable Fund Committee. This important initiative will provide guidance over the administration of the Brimbank Charitable Fund and will develop a community governance model with a view to the Charitable Fund operating independently from Council in the future. The aim of the Fund is to build capital that will grow in perpetuity, generate interest and dividends and provide funding to support the work of local charities and community organisations in the Brimbank municipality. Council is seeking expressions of interest for the Committee from residents or non-residents who have the relevant personal or professional knowledge, who are committed to contributing to the wider Brimbank community and who meet the following criteria: • Demonstrated experience or knowledge of charitable fund philanthropy and relevant governing legislation • An understanding and experience of fundraising • Strong community linkages and knowledge of the broad range of community services provided within the municipality • The ability to represent a diverse range of community views • A willingness to constructively participate in an advisory capacity

A POLICE operation over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend resulted in 375 traffic offences being detected on Melton and Brimbank roads. The statewide Operation Regal aimed to reduce accidents and increase driver awareness. A total of 5140 motorists were breath-tested in Melton and Brimbank, with 13 exceeding the limit. Most of the 375 offences related to speeding and using a mobile phone while driving. Eleven collisions were reported, over the weekend with four resulting in minor injuries. One collision in Brimbank resulted in a fatality, but police believe the male driver in his 50s may have suffered a heart attack before his car struck a tree. Melton’s Leading Senior Constable

Lord of the

Adam Bull tells Robert Fedele about his journey from the back streets of Laverton to international acclaim.

n a rare moment of downtime, principal artist Adam Bull kindly obliges to a request for a brief tour of the Australian Ballet’s Southbank headquarters. Cheerful and polite, Bull plays the role of gracious host perfectly, zigzagging his way through hallways as though he is proudly showing someone around his family home. At 194 centimetres and with curly blonde locks, he commands attention even when not performing. Today he’s dressed down in grey tracksuit pants and a white singlet, barefoot but for black socks so his precious feet can take a well earned breather. It’s not long before Bull is momentarily stopped in his tracks. ‘‘Good to see you back,’’ whispers a woman passing by, her face flushed with admiration. Bull later unmasks his admirer as Ann Jenner, now a teacher with the ballet company but once a principal ballerina with London’s Royal Ballet and a star of yesteryear. He goes on to explain how he has just returned home after performing the Sydney leg of the company’s latest ballet, Vanguard. The passing pleasantries continue and it quickly becomes evident that Bull is somewhat of a big deal around here. The excursion resumes, passing several identical studio spaces before we stop, peering through a rectangular window at the door numbered six.

Inside is a cluster of teenage boys wearing blue leotards, their taut bodies twisting in unison to the delicate sounds of a piano which is heard but not seen. For Bull, the picture is like looking through a crystal ball transporting him back to his childhood. ‘‘It doesn’t feel that long ago that I was down there as a student,’’ he beams. ‘‘It’s surreal sometimes to take a look back at where you’ve come from. It’s a big journey.’’ He’s often dubbed Australia’s version of Billy Elliot due to his working-class roots. Bull’s story begins in the late 1980s when he was a little tacker at Laverton Primary School. His grade 1 teacher, Janine Kip, the woman he counts as his inspiration, pushed him into ballet. Back then neither Bull, nor his family, knew anything of ballet and he jokes that Kip presumably must have seen him jumping around the staff room. ‘‘She saw something in me and encouraged my family to take me to dance lessons. I don’t know what it was that she saw.’’ Kip remembers Bull as a happy-go-lucky kid who would dance on the playground asphalt and turn heads. ‘‘He was out there in the elements with an extension cord and the school’s PA system and he did Michael Jackson’s Man in the Mirror with his little chair and sparkly top.’’ Bull would soon take to ballet like a duck to water at Brian Nolan Academy of Dance, studying under the former Australian Ballet member at his Werribee studio. He remembers his old stomping ground being wedged between a mechanic’s workshop and a karate school.

Danielle Smith Angela Wylie

is envied by all around them.’’ Bull leapt across to the Australian Ballet in his teens and has remained a staple of the company, which is held in high regard worldwide. The tight-knit group of 70-odd dancers performs about 180 shows a year. In 2008, Bull was promoted to the highest ballet rank in the country, becoming a principal artist with the Australian Ballet. Even now, five years on, he’s still both chuffed and humbled by the title. ‘‘You never rest and go ‘yeah I’ve made it!’. Where I am now, people go, ‘Oh, my God, you’re a principal of the Australian ballet’. But I don’t sit back and say I’ve done all the hard work. Every day it gets harder and harder.’’ True to his word, Bull’s schedule seems like the very definition of hard work. It is mid-morning and he’s already taking a break from pilates and stretching in the upstairs gym. There’s a ballet class from 10.30am to noon, rehearsals from noon to 2.30pm, then lunch and more rehearsals until well into the evening. This routine takes place six days a week and intensifies even further during a performance’s season – not that dancers always have the luxury of concentrating on one performance at a time. Right now Bull is rolling out Vanguard while also preparing for Swan Lake just around the corner. Is it worth it? ‘‘It’s too much work for it not to be,’’ Bull retorts. ‘‘If you didn’t love it you couldn’t put your body through what we do.’’

With the company, he has travelled overseas regularly, performing in Paris, London, Tokyo, and a week in New York last year when the company performed Swan Lake. Bull is reluctant to pluck out a highlight from life on the road but says the New York show stands out. ‘’My mum had never seen me dance overseas before. She came over and saw me. It was really emotional. The audience response, as soon as the curtains went down, they all went crazy.’’ Asked about the feeling on stage, Bull says each performance produces a different vibe. ‘‘I still get nervous. Twenty years later, before every show, I still get butterflies. There’s always doubts in your head. But once you hit the stage you just lose yourself. ‘‘Sometimes you’re on a high and loving it. Sometimes you’re sore and injured, but you still have to go out and deliver to 3000 people.’’ Bull concedes ballet is a cut-throat world but says for the most part dancers are supportive of each other, even though there is always someone who can step into your shoes. ‘‘The pressure comes more from within yourself. You’re always so hard on yourself. You come off stage and you can always do better. You’re never happy. ‘‘Even though they’re all beautiful people [fellow dancers], there is a silent competitiveness. We’re all pushing for the same roles. So there’s all these things behind your shoulder but not in an evil, scary way.’’ For Bull, it is time, not other dancers, with whom he must compete. At 31 he is nearer to the end of his performing career than the beginning, the wear and tear on his body making its presence felt.

Danielle Smith

Nolan he recalls as strict but fair, a teacher from the school of hard knocks. ‘‘He was hard. He was a really tough teacher for a little suburban ballet school. But he taught me a lot and got me to a level where I thought, wow, I can do this’.’’ Nolan makes no apologies for his methods and reckons a bit of tough love gets the best out of his pupils. When Bull, a skinny, gawky kid, walked in the door Nolan immediately knew he had something special to work with. Bull took to it ‘‘possessed’’, he says, and had a unique demeanour, carrying himself with elegance and pride. ‘‘I knew from his very first class at seven years old that he was going to be good. By the following year I remember boasting to teachers at ballet competitions that he was potentially that good that he would be a principal with the Australian Ballet one day. The teachers laughed at me, but I knew what I was talking about.’’ Still, even the naturals need prodding. Nolan spent 11 years with Bull, honing his craft for a distant tomorrow, right up until he waved goodbye and set off for the Australian Ballet at age 17. Nolan counts himself lucky to have taught Bull then Valerie Tereshchenko, also with the Australian Ballet, and now Milei Lee, an eightyear-old prodigy he believes will outshine them all. ‘‘It is said that we only get one extraordinary student in our lifetime and I thought after Adam there would not be any more but I was fortunate,’’ Nolan says. ‘‘They all have that special thing about them that one can’t describe and put into words that

Left, Amber Scott and Adam Bull as Odette and the Prince in Swan Lake; top and above, Australian Ballet members Cristiano Martino, Christopher Rodgers-Wilson, Adam Bull and Cameron Hunter; top right, Amber Scott as the white swan and Adam Bull as the prince in Swan Lake; right, Adam Bull in full flight.

‘‘We’re so reliant on our body and being able to be in peak form. And, just like that, anything can go,” he says. ‘‘It’s always in the back of my head. If I have another five years – great. If I have 10, that would be ridiculously good. I take every day as it is and hope it’s not my last.’’ Pressed about the future, Bull reckons coaching at the Australian Ballet wouldn’t be such a bad gig. ‘‘I push it out of my head sometimes, but I do have to think about it. You have made such a commitment at such a young age. It’s all I know. It’s quite scary. ‘‘Just to pass on what I’ve been taught would be a great gift.’’ Outside of ballet, Bull is a travel and adventure junkie. He’s already visited the Antarctic, and the Galapagos Islands are next on the horizon. Who knows where life will take him next. What is certain is that the boy from workingclass Laverton grew up to be a star, as many had predicted. But at home he’s just the same old Adam. ‘‘I’m going to mum and dad’s tonight,’’ he smiles. ‘‘I haven’t seen them since I’ve been back. Mum and dad always put on a spread. She asked last night, ‘What do you want for tea?’ I said, ‘I don’t care, mum. Whatever you’re making is fine’.’’ The Australian Ballet’s new show, Graeme Murphy’s Swan Lake, runs from June 21 to July 1 at the State Theatre, Arts Centre, Melbourne, 100 St Kilda Road. Council no protector of heritage

Keep us safe from dangerous pets

Brimbank council has missed another opportunity to defend the city’s heritage interests. The pretend heritage strategy endorsed by council offers not a single new element of protection, not a single additional dollar, not even any new ideas. The mover of the motion, Brimbank’s administrator Jane Nathan, suggested that the new “strategy” would ensure no more heritage would be lost. Perhaps she intended to be ironic. The “strategy” was introduced at the same meeting in which council indicated its intention to remove more than of half the heritage overlay for Brimbank. Perhaps she is also unaware that the Regional Rail Link Authority intends to demolish a heritage-listed bridge in Sunshine. In response to a public question the administrators indicated they thought that people’s busy lives might be an impediment to community engagement. Clearly it has not occurred to

Reports of unregistered dogs mauling two women in Boronia highlight the need for the government to pursue more changes to laws protecting the public from dangerous animals. This is also supported by the high cost councils are facing to enforce existing laws, sometimes being forced to spend six-figure sums defending appeals brought by owners of animals deemed to be dangerous dog breeds under current legislation. As a firm representing the family of Ayen Chol, the four-year old fatally mauled by an unregistered pitbull in 2011, Slater & Gordon welcomes Premier Denis Napthine’s comments that this is an area warranting further review by the state government. Anyone who has spent time with Ayen’s family since the tragic events in her family’s home in August 2010, understands the grim reality of living in the vicinity of dogs that kill. Nothing will ever make up for the loss of this beautiful young girl, but the knowledge that every

them that their own processes might also be a deterrent and people might feel their busy lives are wasted engaging with the council. The sole community response to this “heritage strategy” was summarily dismissed as irrelevant because, as council insisted, the strategy is not a strategy at all, but an action plan. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Catherine McDonald, Sunshine and Surrounding Suburbs Heritage Association

effort is being made to prevent it from happening again would bring comfort to all who knew her. Ike Nwokolo, Slater & Gordon Lawyers, Sunshine Re: St Albans rail action . . . or not? (Weekly, June 11):

The state government hopes the removal of St Albans’ controversial Main Road railway crossing will start within a year. Expect it to be two years before it’s completed! A year ago, Western Metropolitan Liberal MP Bernie Finn angrily denied the crossing was “taken off the list”, with Brighton getting the nod. But still no action has been taken. Transport Minister Terry Mulder said in April that a grade separation in Springvale was fully funded and going ahead. Two crossings have been put ahead of St Albans. Last September, Mr Finn said planning was well under way. In fact there are no plans, just a half-baked “hope” that something may start this year. Big Mick (via web)

Practical and posh All the mod cons add to a wider appeal, writes Mark Bunker

n an upscale Hillside precinct, this brick veneer blends a classic interior with everyday mod-cons and practical external assets in a pleasing package sure to resonate with potential buyers. Past the brick-paved circular driveway and gabled facade, a security door opens to a foyer with high recessed ceiling and polished Tassie oak floorboards. Of the two bedrooms at the front, one is a main room with a split-system, venetian blinds with pelmets, a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite with retro floor tiles and a bulkhead ceiling; another room has a mirror-faced built-in wardrobe and doubles as a study/office. Two other spacious bedrooms at the back have fitted wardrobes and share a large bathroom with corner spa and high, narrow twin storage cabinets. Carpeted lounge and dining zones either side of the hallway are introduced by columns and have downlight-studded bulkheads and block-out curtains. The house takes a turn for the modern with its kitchen, which has two microwave nooks, a Linea 900mm stainless-steel cooker and Blanco dishwasher, and it’s part of a light-

filled family-meals hub with wide cornices and polished floating floorboards imported from Germany. Two sets of sliding doors with insect screens open to a terrific outdoor entertainment area, where a Colorbond roof and broad PVC blinds provide year-round protection from the elements. Other external features include an entertainment area enclosed by a raked wall feature, a drive-through yard (an ideal space for washing the car or parking trailers), a lemon tree brimming with hundreds of ripe lemons, and ‘neighbours-be-gone’ trees providing complete privacy. The back windows have shutters.

Be prepared Being ready for winter weather will help ensure a trouble-free season.

inter is upon us, but there’s still time to make sure the house is prepared for the weather, to prevent unwanted leaks and damage. Archicentre, the building design, inspection and advice service of the Australian Institute of Architects warned failure to undertake basic home maintenance could leave costly repair bills – especially when structural damage results in cracking and water damage. “Drainage in winter, including the condition of roofs, guttering, downpipes and stormwater drains, can top the damage-causing list leading to both exterior and interior problems where water penetrates the home or creates pools of water or damp under the home,” Archicentre spokesman David Hallett said. Archicentre’s winter home maintenance tips include: • Make sure gutters are clear of debris including leaves and sticks, to stop water backing up and flowing into roof spaces or under the home. Consider installing a gutter protection

barrier so leaves and debris can blow away. • Ensure downpipes flow into the stormwater drain or water tank, not under the home. • Have the roof checked and repaired for broken tiles or slates to avoid internal leaks • Check around the exterior and under the house for excessive dampness or water pooling. • Check for mould spots on interior walls which could be a sign of dampness in the home, particularly in bathrooms and laundries. • Arrange for heating systems to undergo regular annual maintenance. Clean filters and vacuum dust from them. • Ensure fireplaces have a heavy-duty screen in front of them to prevent sparks and burning logs rolling out and igniting the floor or carpet. Ensure the fire screen can’t be tipped over. • Check seals around windows and doors for heat loss.

Rather than tackling possible winter hazards around the house themselves, home owners are encouraged to leave potentially dangerous jobs to professional tradespeople.

Free flow: Clear your gutters of debris to allow water to pass through.

Advice ignored, west the loser BY BENJAMIN MILLAR

THE state government is under growing pressure to reveal why it ignored expert advice to begin building the proposed east-west road link in the west. A report released under freedom of information reveals the Linking Melbourne Authority pushed in 2011 for a new freeway link between West Footscray and the Port of Melbourne as a priority over linking the Eastern and Tullamarine freeways. However, the government has pushed on with the $6  billion to $8 billion eastern link despite mounting pressure on infrastructure in the western suburbs. Monitoring has shown the West Gate Bridge is carrying more than 160,000 vehicles daily. Greens MP Greg Barber moved a motion in State Parliament opposing

the link, arguing it would worsen traffic congestion, air pollution and pedestrian and cyclist safety levels. He said the “misconceived” project would fail to deliver claimed benefits and the money would be better spent on public transport. Opposition planning spokesman Brian Tee said projections of West Gate Bridge traffic reaching 235,000 vehicles a day by 2031 threatened the state’s economy. “On the one hand [Roads Minister Terry Mulder] says we have to prioritise a second river crossing and we have to make sure that there is an alternative to the West Gate Bridge, but the government puts all its money and its policy position into a project that will not deliver a second river crossing,” he said. The opposition is calling on the government to release a business case for the project.

Boss to cuddle up to cardboard for Vinnies A western suburbs homeless advocate will spend a night sleeping at Etihad Stadium in a bid to raise awareness of suburban poverty. Caroline Chisholm Society chief executive Helen Cooney (pictured) will brave the cold to take part in St Vincent de Paul’s annual CEO Sleepout on Thursday. Ms Cooney and hundreds of other business leaders will sleep under the stars with only a sleeping bag and piece of cardboard to keep them warm. Ms Cooney says she was inspired to take part to increase awareness of the more than 2000 women and children who seek assistance from the society every year. More than 75 per cent of these families are from Melbourne’s western suburbs. Ms Cooney hopes to reach her target of $5000 by the end of the week. Donations:

making him a tough match up. The Knights’ defence had no answer, allowing Hickey too much latitude and he hurt them with four goals. “The real strength of his game is that he’s got great endurance but also really good speed,” Baker said. “He wins his own contested footy and he’s strong in the contest, so he’s a very difficult player to match up on.” The Jets handed debuts to Hayden Bray and Joey Blake. They were delighted to see Ajdin Elkasovic make a successful return from injury. “He had some complications with his broken wrist so it’s been a late start for him,’’ Baker said. “He played his first game and got through it well.” The Jets will host Geelong Falcons at Burbank Oval in Williamstown on Saturday in their toughest assignment to date. The Falcons’ only loss of the season came on Saturday, but they were severely undermanned with a number of their stars on Vic Country duty. “The Falcons have been outstanding this year and are the team to beat,” Baker said.

Michael Copp

THERE were times on Saturday when the Western Jets were vulnerable. They might have started with a scintillating six-goals-to-one opening term against the Northern Knights in the TAC Cup at Visy Park on Saturday, but their stranglehold loosened as the game wore on. The Jets managed to hold on for a 15-point win, but coach Torin Baker conceded his side had terms dictated to them by the Knights for lengthy periods in this crucial bout between two finals hunting sides. “It was good that we were able to get off to a great start,” he told the Weekly. “Credit to Northern, they really changed the way the game was being played and tactically didn’t allow us to do what we were trying to do. ‘‘They worked their way back into the contest and ensured our defenders weren’t able to drop off their opponents at any stage. “At the same time, they really crowded our forward line in the second quarter and our guys struggled finding a target inside 50.” As with all good sides, the Jets were able to find a way when challenged.

They isolated key forwards Harrison King and Caleb Sullivan in dangerous one-on-one contests to good effect. And they found run and carry from Liam Duggan off half-back and through the middle. Jake Greiser got his hands dirty in the clinches, while David Iaccarino wore down his opposite number with tireless run. The pendulum swung back into the favour of the Jets in the third and they were able to keep the Knights at arm’s length on the scoreboard. “We were able to right the wrongs from the second quarter,” Baker said. There were few more important players on the field than Lachlan Hickey. The 17-year-old provides an X-factor for the Jets in that he can be used in varying roles. “He’s such a versatile player,” Baker said. “We’ve played him at different stages on a wing, down back and up forward, and he meets every challenge.” Hickey had one of his best games as a half-forward. The Melton Bloods product has an exciting mix of speed and endurance,

Top-of-the-perch Western Lightning braces for tough month By Lance Jenkinson VU-Western Lightning has its nose ahead in the sprint to the Victorian Netball League finish line. The Lightning have a tentative hold on top spot with a month to go in the regular season, but it will have all to play for with local rivals City West Falcons and the persistent Peninsula Waves snapping at their heels in the race for the minor premiership. Tomorrow night’s blockbuster between the Lightning and the Waves at the State Netball and Hockey Centre could go some way to determining which of these two quality teams will have the luxury

of a finals double chance. Lightning coach Matt Hills told the Weekly that after an inconsistent past month on the court, it’s time for his team to recapture the steady form that saw it go on an eight-game winning run from rounds three to 10. “Looking at it now, four weeks out, we should make finals, but we’re aiming to make the top two and it starts against Peninsula,” Hills said. “The next four weeks we’ve got some really challenging games and we’re looking forward to that. “We’ll have four finals-like games heading in and that’s the best preparation you can have. “You’ve got to be able to win

these games heading into finals.” The Lightning returned to the top with a 50-31 win over Geelong Cougars on Wednesday night. They produced their best in patches but also displayed the inconsistency that has plagued them over the past month. In the first and third quarters, the Lightning were near-faultless. In the second and particularly the fourth, they were sloppy with their ball retention, an area that Hills needs his players to sharpen if they want to return to the grand final for a second year in a row. “The fact remains, consistency when you have the ball is the most important thing,” Hills said.

“We’re still the best defensive team by numbers. That means we get it more often than most other teams and we have to use it, and that’s something we have to keep working on.” The Lightning showcased its depth with 10 players getting court time. Talented teen Madeline Stewart was handed her debut and impressed. Different combinations were tried to make the Lightning less predictable. “If you’re going to go deep into finals, it’s difficult to do that with seven players,” Hills said. Meanwhile, the City West Falcons landed in the top two with a 45-30 win over Yarra Valley Grammar Ariels at SNHC.

Thunder fells the Giants KEILOR Thunder ran away with a 79-63 win over Coburg Giants in the Big V Basketball men’s division 2 at the Keilor Basketball Stadium on Saturday night. The out-scored the visitors 28-18 in a pulsating final period. Andrew Freeman had a monster night for the Thunder with 34 points and 22 rebounds to be the game MVP. Matthew Jukes and Matt Spencer starred at both ends. Third-placed Thunder visit fourthplaced Mornington Breakers in a Saturday night showdown at the Mornington Basketball Stadium.

Reds smash Ardeer voodoo By Lance Jenkinson UNBEATEN in five games and holding 13 of a possible 15 points, Sydenham Park has rocketed back into premiership calculations with an eye-catching month in the Football Federation Victoria men’s state league 2. The Reds did on Friday night what no other away team has managed to do all season: smash and grab three points off Westgate at a notoriously hard place to play – Ardeer Reserve. Reds coach Sash Becvinovski was not getting too carried away with the 3-0 win, conceding the hosts were decimated by injuries and suspensions, but he lauded his players for their professionalism to get the result. “It’s a tough place to play,” he told the Weekly of the ground referred to by visiting teams as the Ghetto. “They had a depleted side, but I only worry about my team. They were there for the taking and we’ve taken the opportunity.” The Reds were set on their way by a delightful strike from new recruit Ian Babusha. Babusha unleashed from 30 metres out and gave the goalkeeper no chance. It was just the tonic for a night out for the Reds. “We tend to start a bit flat sometimes; we’re slow starters,” Becvinovski said. “Once we get a flash of brilliance, it picks the team up, and that was Ian’s goal. It lifted the side and we had that belief again that we could win this game.”

‘We had a fair chunk of players out and [Babusha] took the opportunity to come up trumps’ Babusha has been a revelation for the Reds this season. After bouncing around for trials at higher league clubs, he finally found at home Keilor Lodge Reserve and hasn’t looked back. The 19-year-old has netted five times and been an automatic selection since gaining a first term berth through injuries to key players. “We had a fair chunk of players out and he took the opportunity to come up trumps,” Becvinovski said. “[Babusha] is tall, he’s quick, he’s strong and, if he gets into good positions, he’ll score goals.” Vasko Vasilevski, who has endured an injury-hit season, and Koce Delev also found the back of the net for the Reds. But it was the work of goalkeeper Tommy Tomich and the defence of Steven Camilleri, Slave Bozinovski and Tony Stalevski that has impressed their coach in recent times. “Our defence was solid, a clean sheet for the last three games and I’m very pleased with that,” Becvinovski said. The Reds had moved up to fourth on the ladder by Saturday night. For all the FFV results, turn to page 29.

Tough as nails: Ljubo Milicevic will undoubtedly put his body on the line for the Melbourne Knights as he has throughout his career.

Prodigal son Milicevic returns to Knights MELBOURNE Knights unveiled a major signing last week with hardnosed defender Ljubo Milicevic joining the club last week. Milicevic, capped eight times for the Socceroos, has enjoyed a glittering career abroad after spending his formative years with the Knights. The 32-year-old played in Europe with FC Zurich, FC Basel, FC

Thun and BSC Young Boys before returning to Australia to play in the A-League mainly with Newcastle Jets. Milicevic joins the Knights following a brief stint with Hajduk Split in Croatia. In the Victorian Premier League, Osagie Ederero fired in a double for Green Gully Cavaliers in an important 2-1 win over Southern Stars at

Kingston Heath Reserve on Saturday night. Ederero opened the scoring on 16 minutes, but it was cancelled out just three minutes later by Nicholas McKoy. It would be Ederero’s night as he sealed all three points for the Cavaliers with a second goal early in the second half.

Albion blitzes, then hangs on

Eyes only for ... : Rodney Van Riet (Keilor) and Guy Barbuto (Airport West) both want the Sherrin.

Keilor faces month of torrid tests BY DANIEL PAPROTH Keilor coach Mick McGuane says the club is in control of its own destiny after a 42-point loss to Airport West put the Blues two games out of the Essendon District Football League top six. At the halfway point of the season, Keilor has a 3-6 record, with games against three of the top four in the next month. Its three wins have come against the bottom three. Keilor was in touch with Airport West for three quarters on Saturday, but it couldn’t match the Eagles in the last term, managing just two goals as Airport West slammed home seven. Marcus Kenny proved the difference between the two sides, the key forward getting his second ninegoal haul of the year for the Eagles. It was a shoot-out right from the beginning, with Airport West taking a 12-point lead at the first break with seven goals to five. The Eagles marginally increased their lead in a relatively even second term, leading by 16 points at half-time. The Blues breathed new life into the contest in the third quarter to close within 11 points but the

game fizzled out in the final term as Airport West took control. “We’ve got to start stringing wins together, and that’s something we’ve failed to do all season,” said McGuane. “We were really hamstrung. Andrew Browne had to play out of the goalsquare because he couldn’t move, but we had our chances. ‘‘We were sloppy between the arcs too much, which exposed our back half.” McGuane said they were powerless to stop Kenny. “We tried everything but the service he got was very good. He was a focal point. ‘‘On a small ground, it’s one kick out of the centre bounce, and he played in front. He was the difference between us winning and losing in the end.” In division one, Taylors Lakes further improved its percentage with a thumping 112-point win over Westmeadows. The Lions had 12 individual goalkickers and are now second on the ladder with a 7-2 record. In division two, Keilor Park leapfrogged East Keilor into third place, the Devils beating the Cougars by 11 points. Hillside regained top spot with a massive 191-point win over East Sunbury.

Albion broke through for its second win of the Western Region Football League division one season, beating Yarraville Seddon by 43 points on Saturday. Pre-match, both teams had just one win, but it was Albion who wanted it more. They signalled their intent with a sensational first quarter, booting seven straight goals as the Eagles struggled to apply any scoreboard pressure. The Cats led by 34 points at quarter-time and the buffer proved crucial in the second and third quarters, both of which the Eagles won marginally. Yarraville Seddon looked to force its way back into the game with five goals in the second, but it struggled to keep Albion, which kicked four of its own, at bay. At three-quartertime ,the Eagles had cut the lead back to 28 points and the Cats were too good in the final term. They had an array of options up forward, their 20 goals coming from 12 goalkickers, Mohamed Dibb, Johnathan O’Brien and Todd Finco all kicking three. Deer Park kept its grip on the competition with a 57-point win

Clamps put on when it counts

Going nowhere: Jesse McVeigh (Airport West) wraps Daniel Cooper (Keilor) in a tackle.

It WAS a case of close but not close enough for Sunshine Heights on Saturday, the Dragons going down by 13 points to Manor Lakes in Western Region Football League’s division two. The Dragons got within a point of the Storm in the final term, but two late goals to Manor Lakes put the result beyond doubt. Sunshine Heights coach Daniel Xuereb said the loss opened the door for teams lower on the ladder to take their fifth spot. But Dragons fans needn’t worry too much: they’re still two games and more than 70 per cent clear of Albanvale in sixth. The game followed a pattern for much of the afternoon. Lakes started the quarters well only for Heights to come back later in the term. The Dragons trailed by just eight points at three-quarter-time but were snuffed out of an upset by the Storm. In other matches, Albanvale could manage only a seven-point win over bottom-of-the-table Laverton. Caroline Springs suffered a 78-point loss at the hands of undefeated Glen Orden; North Sunshine had its heaviest loss of the season against Parkside by 243 points; and Braybrook lost to West Footscray by 17.
