IT’S BEEN a big week for Hawthorn Magic’s under-14 girls, and the next month isn’t about to get any quieter. Fresh from winning their way into this week’s preliminary final of the Victorian Junior Basketball Championships, the team also found out they had qualified for the National Club Championships in Adelaide in October. They become the first Magic team to qualify for the prestigious tournament, and it’s a proud moment according to team spokesman Pat Coloe. ‘‘They’re over the moon with it,’’ Coloe says. ‘‘It’s taken them from a middle-of-the-road basketball club to pretty much the elite status.’’ Hawthorn – along with fellow Victorian qualifiers Knox, Melbourne and Dandenong – will compete against the best club teams of their age from around the country in a competition that forms part of Basketball Australia’s elite pathways program. If that wasn’t enough, five of the Magic’s under-14 girls were also
selected to attend a national intensive training program run by Basketball Victoria. Sophie Balson, Daphne Keck, Charlotte Coloe, Gabby Collins and Claudia Armato, will train with the squad once a week. The girls have been building towards this success for some time, with most of the group playing in the same team for several years. ‘‘There was a comment made last week by the head coach of Hawthorn Magic that girls basketball can get a bit of bitchiness or selfishness, but that our girls all get along together and play for the team not for themselves,’’ Coloe says. The team, along with coach Michael Dimattina, will continue its finals series this Friday, and the national tournament begins October 1, with Hawthorn’s first game against Illawarra.
