EMMA, 4, of Hawthorn East makes like an octopus in celebration of a new graffiti-repelling mural at Anderson Park. The colourful creation was concocted by students from Auburn South Primary School and Hawthorn Secondary College with the help of a state government grant. Boroondara council removes 95 per cent of graffiti within 48 hours of being alerted, according to its latest quarterly report.

eopening Nauru is going to cost billions of dollars. Ali, who lives here with us, is still recovering five years after leaving that inhospitable place. You have no idea how crummy Nauru is. The land is so white and baked, it repels rain clouds. There is no sanitation; people defecate on the beach. When I visited in 2002 people were living in tin sheds, but mostly they were just living in containers, and there was one family who lived in the space under a building. As for the toilets – they put in flush toilets where there is no water. People don’t understand the intention of the refugees convention. It is to settle people, not just to have them come and stay for a bit. Nauru can’t even support its own population. I don’t know what arrangement was made with the Howard government, but we got these unhealthy, diabetic Nauruans – in exchange for what? Ninety per cent of the detainees were found to be genuine refugees. We can’t keep jailing people for no crime. Even if we devise some work-for-the-dole scheme, it is more humane than locking up all that energy. Spare Rooms started in 2001 as a way of saying ‘‘we are safe with them’’. Back then, asylum seekers were regarded as Muslim terrorists. I wanted to say, ‘‘I don’t believe that, and I’ll show it by having refugees in my house’’. We didn’t have any police checks, we just advised people to have someone to stay for five or six weeks. In those days we got abusive letters, and still we get tweets from people who accuse Burnside (Kate’s husband Julian Burnside) of making money out of asylum seekers. In one

case, court costs were awarded and he gave it to the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre. He has never made a cent from any case, nor have the other lawyers who work pro bono for Spare Lawyers for Refugees. I would regard Burnside as a reformed Tory; he’s still a commercial lawyer, he’s just very good at taking on triple the workload. The pressure on Australia will be greater as 2014 comes up and the NATO forces withdraw from Afghanistan. Every Hazari knows the massacres will start in earnest.

The Pashtuns have already taken their land and stolen their water, and they just kill Hazaris at random. It’s not a war, it’s genocide. I’m not sure if [the SBS series] Go Back To Where You Came From has changed people’s views. It’s very different from the gentler times when we didn’t make much fuss about the Vietnamese coming in — and they came in greater numbers. I would also like to inquire: has the world turned upside down since last year, when we let in 54,000 Kiwis? I don’t see them threatening the Australian way of life.

PROFILE KATE DURHAM WHAT I LOVE ABOUT HAWTHORN: The Swinburne students. They’ve brought all these ethnic cuisines into Hawthorn, which is starting to develop a new personality. WHAT I’D CHANGE: I would like to remove Richmond. Every time you want to go somewhere you have to go through Richmond, and the traffic is terrible. No insult to Richmond people.

VOX POP SHOULD THE COUNCIL BAN SMOKING IN OUTDOOR EATING AREAS? BEN SHANNON, 18, Box Hill No. It’s a breakdown of human rights. You have a right to do what you want. Move away if you don’t want to smoke.

CATELYN KITCHIN, 21, Caulfield I think they shouldn’t ban smoking in public areas because it will damage local business. There are a lot of people who do smoke, and I don’t think it’s fair to kick them out of public areas.

JORDAN NANA, 24, Fitzroy I don’t think it should be banned, but I can see the point. It’s not fair if you’re a nonsmoker and you’re sitting outside surrounded by smokers.

Council leads the pack, no butts about it WITH Victoria’s toughest antismoking law now in force, Boroondara council has thrown down the gauntlet to the state government to ban smoking in all public places, including outdoor dining areas. Boroondara’s new Smoke-Free Areas Local Law imposes a maximum $500 fine for smoking within 10 metres of a playground or sportsground or facility on councilcontrolled land, within five metres of an entrance to a municipal building, and within five metres of a taxi rank or public transport stop on council-controlled land. ‘‘The community is clearly behind this,’’ mayor Heinz Kreutz told the meeting last week at which councillors unanimously voted for the new law. ‘‘I have had questions by phone about smoking in alfresco areas; perhaps this is something residents can provide input on.’’ Cr Phil Meggs lamented the state government’s failure to enact controls, saying freedom from passive smoking was ‘‘a question of civil

rights and human rights. It is important to acknowledge that what we are doing is protecting the rights of the community . . . We have been left without [state government guidance] at this stage, so we have to take this step and show leadership in this respect.’’ The council will spend $23,000 erecting signs at its 56 sports grounds and 101 playgrounds. The director of city planning, John Luppino, said the law would be reviewed after 12 months. At least 10 other Victorian councils have enacted smoke-free laws, including Baw Baw Shire which last month completed a 12-month trial ban of smoking in outdoor dining areas. Quit Victoria director Fiona Sharkie said 83 per cent of Baw Baw traders reported business was the same or better than before the trial. Health Minister David Davis, who did not respond to the RL by press time, last week told Parliament he had met with Quit, VicHealth, the Cancer Council, the MAV and the Australian Hotels Association with a view to wider smoking controls.

■ JESUIT-RUN CAFES Cafes at the new Camberwell Library and Hawthorn Community Precinct will be run by the Jesuit Social Services who plan to train unskilled young people in hospitality. The Jesuits have a five-year lease on the cafes, which will open in October. Both buildings will open to the public in mid-September. The council expects to make an income of $7866 from the cafes in 2012–13.

OWNERS of Boroondara’s most unsightly properties will be forced to clean up or face court under a tough new law that comes into effect this month. Boroondara council will gazette its Amenity (Unsightly Land Amendment) Local Law on September 20, after councillors unanimously voted last week to crack down on derelict, vandalised or overgrown properties, at least one of which has been visited several times by police. The law will require an owner or occupier of private land to ensure the site is safe, kept free from graffiti, litter, tall weeds and disused vehicles and machinery, and is not detrimental to the area’s amenity. Offences will attract a $2000 fine, with $200 fines each day thereafter until the site is cleaned up. Asked if the council had a hit list, director of city planning John Luppino said: ‘‘Council has a number of sites it is currently investigating, but for legal and privacy reasons is unable to specify which ones these are until council formally decides to take action under the new local law.’’ Mr Luppino said the law was prompted by ‘‘an escalating trend that has emerged over recent years’’ of vacant properties becoming public hazards. ‘‘While it is council’s intention to work with developers and property owners it is likely that matters may be referred to the Magistrates’ Court where there are examples of wilful and ongoing noncompliance,’’ he said. Glenferrie ward councillor Phil Meggs slammed neglectful owners, ‘‘some of whom have far more resources than council’’.

CHECKED OUT: Owners of the California Hotel in Barkers Road said they would co-operate with the council and police to keep the site safe

‘‘The new law gives us some powers to pursue them with some strength, whereas previously we have only been able to encourage appropriate behaviour,’’ he said. The owners of Hawthorn’s most notorious eyesore, the California Hotel in Barkers Road, told RL they would co-operate with council and police to keep the site safe. ‘‘We keep in very regular contact with the council with regard to the perimeter security and keeping the shadecloth on the fencing intact,’’

Thorney Holdings chief operating officer Alan Miller said. But there was no immediate plan to demolish the ruined buildings, which became the target of vandals and squatters after the hotel closed in 2008, he said. ‘‘We do have a permit to build a retirement village and we are con-

sidering other residential options,’’ Mr Miller said, adding that he had had no reports of trespassers recently. According to a permit issued by Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal in 2010, Thorney estimated it would cost $200,000 to clear the site.

Green gong spurs council to step up its sustainability campaign HAVING clinched the title of Sustainable City of the Year for 2012, Boroondara council’s green experts want to squeeze household waste – and the money spent on it – even more. Smaller bins, fewer rubbish collections, more composting and making

manufacturers take responsibility for their products are among the ideas being debated as the council aims to preserve its state title. Council environment and sustainability manager Adam Hall said Boroondara was still energy-intensive. ‘‘It

is not that we want people to work around sustainability, we want them to live it a bit more,’’ he said. Mr Hall and waste management coordinator Sam di Giovanni are considering a trial of product stewardship, with manufacturers of electronic,

white and chemical goods contributing to funds to recycle or dispose of old products. The council is also doing a feasibility study into using cogeneration at three public pools. The process, whereby electricity is powered by natural gas, uses the

excess heat produced to warm the pool, cutting fuel costs by 7 per cent. Co-generation powers the new Ashburton Leisure Centre and may be introduced at Kew, North Balwyn and the new Hawthorn pool, due to open next year.

Headspace for Kew youth

Chemical cache may return to teen SUPPLIED

BY TERESA MURPHY teresa.murphy@fairfaxmedia.com.au

CHEMICALS commonly used to make drugs have been found in the bedroom of a Camberwell schoolgirl. But Boroondara police may have to return them, and 1000 empty capsules, because they are not illegal as separate entities. Boroondara detectives collected the cache last Monday while the 15-year-old was at school. Her mother had phoned police when she found a plastic shopping bag containing 10 sealed bags of various chemicals and gelatin capsules. The chemicals included hordenine, caffeine, phenylethylamine (or PEA) and phenibut. The total value is estimated at $1000. ‘‘When mixed properly, these make up drugs that are commonly used by bodybuilders and have a similar effect to ecstasy,’’ Detective Senior Sergeant Daryl Cullen said. ‘‘Caffeine prolongs the effect.’’ Det Cullen said the chemicals were ordered from well-known international websites Hard Rhino and Muscle-Empire and mailed from

KEW is among 15 national sites chosen for vital mental health services for young people. MHR for Kooyong Josh Frydenberg had been campaigning for the popular service Headspace to be established in the electorate. He had strong support from the community and Boroondara council. Headspace helps people aged 12–25 deal with drug and alcohol abuse, depression and other mental health problems. The Kew Headspace should open in about a year. ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ● ●

PRESSURE POINT LEGAL SUBSTANCE: Boroondara Detective Senior Sergeant Daryl Cullen with part of the chemical haul San Jose in California. ‘‘They advertise these chemicals under the guise of muscle stimulants and dietary supplements, which are all perfectly legal. It’s their potential for other uses that alarms us.’’ He said young people, parents and schools had to be aware of the

potential dangers of ordering any form of chemical or drug from websites. ‘We just don’t know what the long-term effects of exposure to these chemicals might have on their [users] mental stability,’’ he said. Det Cullen said legal advisers con-

firmed that the girl had not committed an offence and the chemicals would probably be returned. He said the girl got the chemicals from a 16-year-old from Camberwell youth, who had bought them on the internet. He said police would speak to the teenager.

Boroondara council has investigated seven reports of restricted-breed dogs since the state government outlawed American pitbull terriers and four other breeds under changes to the Domestic Animals Act almost a year ago. None of the seven turned out to be of a breed deemed dangerous.

Novel news on library revamp BY ALISON BARCLAY alison.barclay@fairfaxmedia.com.au

ASHBURTON’S new library and learning centre is tipped to come in more than $1.2 million under budget, after costs were revised when the building contract was awarded. Boroondara council voted at its meeting last week to give the $4.5 million building contract to 2Construct Pty Ltd, which will overhaul the original Daryl Jackson building by enlarging the library and adding outdoor reading decks, quiet study areas, parents’ facilities and a foyer lounge. The adjacent community centre will be rebuilt and feature classrooms, offices and three outdoor areas. The existing playground will be relocated and fenced. The council set aside $7.2 million over three years but now estimates the 12-month project will come in at just over $6 million. Project costs such as power

The market used to attract about 80 stalls and 600-800 people at the town hall. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR ■ RATES RAGE If you have received your Boroondara rates notice you will see that our worthy council has decided to slug you with a surcharge if you pay your rates by credit card. Surely the advantages of council not handling cash would far outweigh the cost of accepting payment by this convenient method. But no, our mean council wants you to cover this cost. Many other public bodies absorb this cost as an everyday expense. And by the way, people on pensions and fixed income are not exempt from the credit card surcharge. Graeme Elliott / via email ■ HELP AT HOME I was really disappointed and quite shocked to read that home and community services are to be scaled back in Boroondara (‘‘Home service cuts worry elderly’’, RL, August 22). I had thought government policy was to enable people to stay in their own homes and support them with

government services. To me, this signifies a lack of respect for people who have contributed to the life of the community. It shows a disregard for those who work so generously with scant reward for the social service they provide, and I believe this scaling back is detrimental to the health and well-being of our community. Jean Healey / via email

■ STAY SAFE Thanks Jake Whitford for keeping what can happen on the roads uppermost in people’s mind (‘‘Take care on roads’’, RL, August 29). It’s a very emotional time for family and friends when a loved one is so badly injured. The Alfred hospital does such wonderful work, as well as Caulfield Hospital. Awareness is so important and should always be the first thing we think of when driving. Jake sends a reminder to everyone just what can happen in a split second when we lose concentration. hadstone shopping centre was a sprawling complex even a century ago, though its purpose was more God than Mammon. Between 1881 and 1883, the Catholic Church built the Convent of the Good Shepherd on 22 hectares in what was then Oakleigh. In 1930, a French Gothic chapel was built, its spire and clock tower becoming a local landmark. Part of the convent land was sold in 1958 and 1963 for the development of Chadstone, with the remainder sold in 1983.The convent was controversially demolished to make way for car parking.

Name: Walter Age: 7 Breed: Jack Russell terrier cross Sex: Male (desexed) Walter is an older gentleman who enjoys the good things in life - leisurely strolls, tummy rubs and playing with other friendly well-mannered small dogs. He can be a little shy at first and is best suited to an adult-only home as small children may frighten him. He has some basic manners, training and can sit and walk nicely on a leash. Walter has sensitive skin may need treatment for allergies in the future, but he has lots of love to give. All dogs at The Lost Dogs’ Home are $300, are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped, wormed and come with one free obedience lesson. Please note Walter may have been adopted since going to press. OVER HEARD THREE OF THE BEST ARTISAN BAKERIES

(Referring to the Aerial development):

PURE BREAD BAKERY, 114 Union Road, Surrey Hills. Call 9836 3789. Traditional sourdoughs are the mainstay of this local just by the railway line – plain loaves and also those with corn, olives or rosemary. But the hands-down winner is the Pure Fruit loaf with figs, currants, sultanas, almonds, raisins and prunes.

“IT’S TERRIBLE. I USED TO BE ABLE TO LOOK OUT MY WINDOW AND GET A VIEW OF THE CITY AND NOW ALL I CAN SEE IS THAT MONSTROSITY.”

The verdict There’s a reason Mecca Cosmetica has a cult following. The product quality speaks for itself – it just needs the staff to apply it.This they do well, explaining each item’s benefits and features without the hard sell. Staff also listen well, and they downplay the make-up drama to better suit my afternoon commitments. I get a preview of the new season colours and a face chart, which details all the products they used on me.The process takes an hour so don’t try and squeeze it into a lunch break.

RIPPER RITA

DARREN JAMES

A food legend looks back at Melbourne’s dining scene and reveals how we’ve all grown up better fed

R

ita Erlich’s latest book might have taken her only five months to write, but the content had been sitting in large envelopes behind her study door, in bulging filing cabinets, in stacks on her desk and in boxes under her bed for 30 years. Melbourne by Menu is primarily the result of hundreds of restaurant menus she acquired over her career as a food writer. Most were from the 1980s, which is when she began writing restaurant reviews for The Age and The Age Good Food Guide. The mostly handwritten menus from the ’80s are a fascinating glimpse of a time when patrons smoked cigarettes, cigars and pipes in restaurants. Salmon, grainfed beef and avocados were considered gourmet while dishes offering brains and offal were common. Celebrity chefs hadn’t been invented, although they had started to write their own cook books. But Erlich’s book isn’t simply a collection of recipes or “what Rita ate last”. Each restaurant chapter is made up of an essay written this year, a menu and often a review or

interview written back in the ’80s. The Kew East food writer says Melbourne’s reputation as a good food city didn’t happen overnight; many chefs who trained in the ’80s are at their peak now. “I didn’t want the book to be an exercise in nostalgia, but this was my way of saying, ‘look at how we got to where we are now’,” Erlich says. “There are some fabulous restaurants around now and I look at some of the chefs who are in their 30s or late 20s and I just think,‘oh thank goodness you are here’.They are carrying on a very distinguished tradition. All these fabulous chefs didn’t just spring up like mushrooms after the rain.” Erlich says Melbourne’s diversity makes it excel as a restaurant city. “We’re like a crossword or a chessboard, because you can think along a style of cuisine and take your pick and then you can think up and down a price range and take your pick,” she says. “It’s that choice density that makes Melbourne so interesting. It’s really easy to have your pick of restaurants at the very top end, but it’s what happens all the way

A night t o remember

through that determines what people are eating.” There were difficult choices about which restaurants and chefs to include, but Erlich was keen to include lesser-known restaurants alongside icons such as Florentino, Flower Drum and Mietta’s. “It was a remarkable opportunity to tell people’s stories,” she says.“I tracked down most people by the advantage of having a background in journalism. It was amazing talking to all these people, and what was amazing was how open everyone was.” Erlich agrees diners these days have a better appreciation of fine food. “But I also think you can be altogether too precious,” she says. “In most cases, you want something that is wholesome, attractive, delicious to eat and you feel better having eaten it.” Simple, really. Melbourne by Menu is available now through Slattery Media. See Erlich at Readings Hawthorn at 6.30pm on September 6. Details: call 9819 1917. JOANNE SIM joanne.sim@fairfax.com.au

Xander makes an early pitch for the top ARI HATZIS

BY EWEN McRAE emcrae@fairfaxmedia.com.au

PITCHING IN: Xander Barling played for Australia against the world’s best under-12 players

IT’S the simple things in sport that often get people interested, and if you happen to have some skill you can make it to the top. Xander Barling, 12, may have just returned from a baseball tour to the USA but it’s still the simple things about the game that excite him. ‘‘I love just whacking the ball as hard as I can,’’ he says. Xander, who plays for the North Balwyn club, ‘‘whacked’’ his way into the Australian team that recently competed in the Cal Ripkin Series in Aberdeen, Maryland against the best kids of his age in the world. The Cal Ripkin series is an annual event for 11 and 12-year-olds that brings together 10 US teams and six international sides. Xander played against Canada, Mexico, Dominican Republic, South Korea and eventual winners Japan, and enjoyed the challenge. ‘‘I loved playing against the best in the world,’’ he says. ‘‘It was tough but we didn’t do too badly, especially against Mexico and Canada.’’ The match against Japan was the

hardest, with the Aussies’ 5-0 loss a reflection of the difference in skill level. ‘‘They were very good, their fielding was very organised, they had great hitters and played as a team really well,’’ Xander says. While Australia won only one game – 13-6 against Canada – it didn’t dim Xander’s enthusiasm and he’s already targeting a baseball career. ‘‘I’d like to go all the way,’’ he says. ‘‘I’d be happy to go overseas straight away, go to America and learn over there. That would be great.’’ For now it seems choosing which part of the game to focus on is Xander’s biggest challenge. ‘‘I’d love to be an all-rounder,’’ he says. ‘‘I love hitting and I love shortstop. But I’d really like to be a pitcher.’’

MATCH REPORT

BRIEFS ■ CUP FINAL RE-MATCH Box Hill will play Bundoora in the final of the Women’s Premier League soccer after beating Sandringham 4-0 in the semi final at the weekend. Up 1-0 at half-time, Box Hill piled on the pressure to set up a re-match of the Pelada Cup final, which Box Hill won two weeks ago.

Balwyn scrapes through in thriller BY EWEN McRAE emcrae@fairfaxmedia.com.au BALWYN set up a mouth-watering clash with Scoresby on Saturday after scoring a strong win over Noble Park in their EFL Division 1 elimination final on Sunday. The Bulls had the Tigers’ measure in their two previous meetings this year, but they couldn’t keep up in the final term this time as Balwyn ran out winners 13.14 (92) to 8.7 (55) at Boronia’s Tormore Reserve. Balwyn started the better of the two teams, and generated plenty of run through the midfield, but it was

Noble Park which made the most of a breeze to score two early goals. Shane Tregear found some space inside 50 to score the Tigers’ first goal, but Noble Park hit back from the ensuing centre bounce to restore the two-goal buffer. Balwyn’s Luke Barker’s shot at goal after the siren failed to make the distance, leaving the Bulls with a 13-point lead at the first break. It was a far more composed Balwyn outfit in the second term, and two quick goals eroded Noble Park’s lead. If not for some inaccuracy, Balwyn could have stretched to a more significant lead but took a slender

two point buffer into half-time. The third term started much how the second finished, with Balwyn having the best chances despite kicking into the wind. They missed the opportunity to extend their lead several times with

a lack of composure near goal and Noble Park closed the gap. A missed kick by Balwyn meant they lead by just three points at the final break. Balwyn couldn’t have asked for a better start to the final term with Marc O’Regan goaling in the first minute and Maddison Hardiman adding another soon after to open up a 15-point lead. A late f lurry from Balwyn saw them through to the semis with a real chance of pushing further into September. Balwyn will play Scoresby in this week’s semi-final after Vermont won its qualifying final on Saturday.

■ CAREY ENDS ON A HIGH Old Carey ended a disappointing VAFA season with a consolation 14-point win over finals-bound De La Salle. Although unable to make the finals, Carey led from start to finish to win 12.8 (80) to 9.12 (66) and finish fifth.

Grounds get T20 all-clear THE ban on Twenty20 cricket has been lifted at two Boroondara sports grounds after they were upgraded to improve safety. Camberwell’s Highfield Park North and Balwyn’s Gordon Barnard Reserve will bring to 22 the number of local pitches suitable for the game, which sparked controversy last year when risk assessors deemed it too dangerous for most of Boroondara’s grounds. And Camberwell Sports Ground fencing has also been upgraded, allowing the Magpies to play Premier T20 on their home turf. Boroondara council banned T20 from 39 of Boroondara’s 59 grounds last year after a risk review found many were too small or too close to public areas, with an increased risk of injury from balls hit for six. The review was prompted by damage to cars outside Camberwell Sports Ground during a match. But councillor Coral Ross told a council meeting there were no statistics to prove T20 was more dangerous than traditional cricket. Eastern Cricket Association operations manager Mike Slattery said clubs also reduced the risk of damage by using lower grade balls

■ STINGERS STUNG North Balwyn’s under-15 winter baseball side went down 6-0 to a strong Ringwood side in the grand final. The Stingers, including recent Australian representative Xander Barling (See Page 22), couldn’t match Ringwood’s skills. ■ HUNT FOR A COACH Canterbury Football Club is looking for a coach for the 2013 season. The club is focused on development and progression and is looking for a coach who relishes a challenge. Applications must be received by September 26. HEY, UMPIRE: Xavs’ Josh Agius appeals after a tackle on Collegians’ Daniel Strachan

Collegians grab the edge over Xavs COLLEGIANS scored a confidenceboosting win over Old Xaverians in the final round of VAFA Premier action on the weekend With the two meeting again in the first week of the finals on Saturday, the 9.18 (72) to 9.8 (62) win at Toorak Park may give Collegians a psychological edge. But for their inability to kick straight, it could have been far more comfortable, with Collegians scoring six behinds in the opening term without a major. They managed four goals in the second quarter, but Old Xavs took an eight-point lead into half-time.

FINALS, WEEK 1 MATCHES in the first week of the VAFA finals, to be played on Saturday: PREMIER A Qualifying Final: Collegians v Old Xaverians Elimination Final De La Salle v Old Scotch

Collegians finally clicked in the second half and their extra 10 shots on goal were enough to seal the win. Old Xavs coach Andy Gowers said Collegians were better on the day. “We pretty much did everything we would normally do to win. It

wasn’t quite good enough today but, hopefully, it will be good enough next week,” he said. Xavs have an injury concern, with Jonathan Mercuri needing scans on a foot injury, which could rule him our for the first week of the finals. Gowers said he wasn’t worried about his team’s form, despite losing three of their last four games. “We’ve had a bit of bad weather to contend with and that’s restricted our scoring power,” Gowers said. “The objective is to win next week but we’ve got the double chance for good reason. Hopefully we don’t need to use it.”

■ MCC JOINS THE KEW Melbourne Cricket Club and Kew Heights Sports Club have formally approved a partnership that will result in upgraded facilities at KHSC. The deal will include more than $3 million investment in the Barkers Road site, as well as renaming it as the MCC–Kew Sports Club. Works will start next year. ■ MAGPIES GO NORTH Camberwell Magpies CC travelled to Queensland at the weekend for a series of preseason matches against Brisbane clubs and Premier Cricket rivals Prahran and Geelong. Camberwell played T20 and one-day games in preparation for the season, which starts next month.
