National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) results reveal Southern Cross Grammar was the north-west’s best-performing school in grades 3, 5 and 7 last year, with “substantially above average” results in those grades across reading, persuasive writing, grammar and punctuation, and numeracy compared with the Australian average. Australia’s new home for property

Readers will soon receive newspapers that are bigger, brighter and better with the launch of six new titles across Melbourne’s north-west. The new papers will be produced by MMP-Star Pty Ltd, a merger between Metro Media Publishing Community Newspapers and Star News Group’s north-west division. There has been a 20 per cent drop in affordable rental properties in Brimbank in the past 13 years, a new study has revealed. The Tenants Union of Victoria is urging the federal government to increase rental assistance after an ‘‘affordability bulletin’’ revealed six out of the seven different types of rental households in Sunshine would experience ‘‘housing stress’’ if paying median rent prices. Housing stress is defined as spending more than 30 per cent of income on rent. Broker Kieu Thi Huynh provided a false payslip as Le sought a $427,950.33 loan for a house in Deer Park. Loan Thi Nguyen, of St Albans, was fined $4000 after pleading guilty to one charge of

obtaining financial advantage by deception on February 17. Nguyen, 46, sought a $410,000 loan for the purchase of a property in Delahey, declaring an income of $62,088 from a company she never worked for. .Her actual employer said she earned half that amount. Phuong Thi Tran, of Sunshine West, was fined $6000 after pleading guilty to the same charge on February 25. The part-time machinist, 54, sought a $265,000 loan for the purchase of a property in Sunshine West. She supplied a letter stating she was employed by a company that she never worked for. She had been on Centrelink payments since 2009. \

Last week’s sacking of three police officers for the production of 50 racist stubby holders at Sunshine police station in 2012 was saddening, according to Victoria University lecturer Elleni Bereded-Samuel. The community engagement adviser from Ethiopia praised Victoria Police’s handling of the issue but said she was amazed that officers would put so much time and effort into a negative act. High-ranking members faced disciplinary action over the stubby holders, which featured a cartoon mudfish – derogatory slang for Africans – and were circulated around the station. New Brimbank council administrator John Tanner is likely to be sworn in at a meeting tonight. A small-business owner in Benalla for more than 30 years and the National Party’s federal president for six years until 2006, Mr Tanner was confirmed as the municipality’s third administrator last Wednesday following the recent resignation of Peter Lewinsky. Local Government Minister Jeanette Powell said Mr Tanner would draw from his extensive experience in local government, small business and regional development. “Mr Tanner served as the local government commissioner in the shire of Delatite from 1994 to 1997 and his expertise in community engagement, management, governance and strategic planning will enable him to bring considerable skills to Brimbank City Council,’’ Mrs Powell said. “This appointment will further embed good governance practices, effectively manage strategic local projects and continue to restore community confidence in the council’s ability to govern.” Mr Tanner has served as a delegate on the Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce, as a member of the Australian Small Business Association state executive, and as chairman of the Timber Industry Road Evaluation Study. The homicide squad is investigating after the body of a newborn baby was found on a St Albans street last Thursday. Police were called to a property in Ruth Street about 3pm and found the baby’s body near a footpath. Circumstances surrounding the death are yet to be determined. N

issan’s Altima – bigger than the Pulsar, not quite as big as the now-departed Maxima (and good riddance) – has been a big seller in the US for years and, now that it’s being made in Thailand and subject to a free-trade agreement (that is, no tariffs), it has finally made it here. It has many attractions. There’s plenty of room inside despite It’s for reasonably compact packaging, it’s well equipped, well priced and no-risk nicely made. But it’s still, essentially, motoring an American car. The suspension rides beautifully but the handling is a bit sluggish and roly-poly. The steering lacks feel and you sometimes find yourself winding on a fraction too much lock, or not enough. Thus it’s a car built for freeways rather than interesting two-lane blacktops. Licence to thrill Basketball

Keilor Thunder has a licence to thrill in the Big V basketball men’s division 2. The Thunder has assembled one of its most athletic line-ups in years and has the green light from new coach Steve Toy to showcase it to the fans. Toy told the Weekly that he wants his side to be known as one of the most entertaining to watch in the competition. “I’ve already told the boys, any chance they get to dunk it, do exactly that,” he said. “We want to put on a good show at our games. We want people to come and watch, get excited and enjoy the game. “Out of the 14 guys, something like 10 of them can dunk it quite easily, so we’re expecting them to put on a pretty good show.” The Thunder tips off its season on Sunday with a road trip to the Coburg Giants. It will be a vastly different line-up to the one that had a succession of finals appearances under Peter Jukes. Gone are experienced players Matthew Jukes (Melton), Brent Radoslovic (Altona) and Andrew Freeman (overseas). In their place is a host of youngsters wanting to make a name for themselves in the senior ranks. It’s not often that you would have the words youth, inexperience and finals in the same sentence, but Toy’s plans are exactly that. “We’ve rebuilt from the youth league ranks, who won the championship last year,”

Toy said. “There’s some good talent coming though, they’re all extremely athletic, they all get on well together, so I think the chemistry is right. “We’re hoping to do some real damage this season and hopefully take the next step.” Toy talked excitedly about the young players he would be working with this season. Football Deer Park has added to its already impressive list of recruits for its Western Region Football League division 1 premiership defence. The Lions have brought in 200-game Carlton player Ryan Houlihan, to join fellow league recruits Bret Thornton (Carlton/GWS), Brent Guerra (Port Adelaide/ St Kilda/Hawthorn) and Ryan Hargrave (Western Bulldogs). green machine looks to npl Soccer

It is rush hour for clubs preparing for the newly formed National Premier League. The on again, off again saga of Victoria’s version of the NPL has caught clubs on the hop. Football Federation Victoria announced successful applicants, revealed their draw and almost in the blink of an eye the inaugural season is upon us. While many of the clubs’ power brokers will be burning the midnight oil to make sure everything is in order, there is a familiar air of serenity at Green Gully. The Cavaliers will enter the campaign with one of the most settled and proven line-ups in the league. Cavs coach Jeff Fleming has retained the bulk of the list from last season and promoted from within to re-energise the squad. “It’s happened a little quicker than what we were expecting, but I think we’re as prepared as anyone,” he told the Weekly. “Most of the players were with us last year so we’ll basically re-focus them, work on a few things and hopefully we can hit the ground running. That’s a huge advantage.” Green Gully is a powerful name in Victorian soccer. Founded in 1955, the Cavs were part of the former NSL in the 1980s. The club has been Victorian Premier League champions nine times, including back-to-back winners in 2010-11. It is the reigning Dockerty Cup champion, a trophy it has won five times. Players are keen to play at the well-run club, and its retention rate is second-to-none. Fleming knows how lucky he is to coach a club so highly respected. “That’s the great thing about the stability we have at Gully, you’re able to keep these players for a longer period of time,” he said. “You get to know them quite well, their strengths and weaknesses, and you can use that to your advantage.” It has not all been smooth sailing for the

Cavs. Their pre-season form, albeit in limited outings, has been rocky. “We’ve been a little bit inconsistent,” Fleming said. “I’ve been a little bit disappointed with the performances, so hopefully we get the bad ones out of the way now.” Who would bet against the likes of the Vargas brothers – Rodrigo and Andy – Jason Hayne, Osagie Ederero and Brent Fisher from turning it around? Westvale Olympic made a rollicking start to the FFV Dockerty Cup with a 4-0 thrashing of the Western Eagles at the Polish Sports and Recreation Complex on Saturday. The Vales advanced to the third round of the knockout competition and got a much-needed win after a scratchy start to their pre-season. Vales coach George Karkaletsis said the win was a morale booster ahead of a team bonding session in Dromana following the match. “We were a bit undermanned, so to score four goals was really satisfying,” he said. “The players lifted after a few mediocre games and that’s important three weeks out from the season.

“It’s important to get positive results for the confidence of the players.” The Vales have adopted a more structured, passing style of play out of the back, using the skills of goalkeeper Wes Coles. Coles has a big load on his plate as both goalkeeper and captain but is expected to thrive in the roles. “His attributes are enormous,” Karkaletsis said. “He’s a goalkeeper who can use both feet and distribute the ball well so we’re going to make the most of it. His enthusiasm rubs off on the other players.” Arin Mesinovic arrived with big raps from Maribyrnong Greens. He has the versatility to play closer to goal or in an attacking midfield capacity.

After a couple of a uninspiring friendly outings, he finally showed what he can bring to the table with two goals. “He scored two goals and was unlucky not to get a third with another hitting the crossbar,” Karkaletsis said. Luke Cable scored a goal and had a say in another from the midfield. Daniel Walker excelled, firstly in the centre of defence and then as an overlapping right back. “We’ve got a team with a fair bit of depth,” Karkaletsis said. “That’s something we’re excited about.” In other games, Spring Hills had a 2-2 draw with Shepparton South, but went down 4-2 on penalties. Grand United president Daniel Gaylor has called on the Williamstown and District Cricket Association to shake up its turf competitions. The Gorillas have been a powerhouse club for years and Gaylor fears that it could be a competition in quicksand if urgent changes are not made. He has proposed turning the top grades into a one-day only schedule to offer a difference to the predominantly two-day Victorian Turf Cricket Association. The VTCA is attracting a lot of WDCA defectors with West Newport and Williamstown Imperials likely to join Newport-Digman, Point Cook, Laverton, Wyndham Vale, Deer Park-Ardeer and Williamstown CYMS in that competition. “The WDCA turf competition is shrinking with clubs exiting the comp at an alarming rate,” Gaylor said. “The WDCA needs to provide a genuine point of difference from the VTCA in terms of our fixture, otherwise we’re doomed.” In a letter to WDCA chairman Mark Keating, Gaylor also suggested a move to a best-of-three A-turf finals series, a fortnightly mid-week Twenty20 competition and monthly veterans competition. \ LJ

City West Falcons collected their fifth win on the trot in the Victorian Netball League championship division to maintain top spot. The Falcons offence showed no signs of slowing down in a 60-41 mauling of the Geelong Cougars at the State Netball Hockey Centre on Wednesday night. Coach Marg Lind used three goalers during the game and all had better than an 85 per cent return. VU-Western Lightning lost to Boroondara Genesis, the only other undefeated team in the league. The Lightning lost 44-40, but showed they can match it with one of the best sides in the competition. Sophie Gunn was the stand-out goaler for Lightning with 28-from-31 for a 91 per cent return. Hogarth with an ATAR of 98.85 will be commencing an Arts degree at Melbourne University this year. Chelsea received the highest possible score of 50 in English and 49 in Visual Communication and Design.  Aleisha Clark was the 2013 DUX of the school achieving an ATAR of 99.5 and will be studying an Arts Scholars Program at Monash University. Aleisha achieved a range of excellent results including a score of 50 in Psychology to complement the 50 she also gained in 2012 studying Biology whilst in Year 11.  Stuart Boyd who studied a range of predominately Mathematics and Science subjects has gained admission to the prestigious Bachelor of Engineering (Deans Scholarship) degree at Swinburne University of Technology.

In the past three years the School has had students achieve perfect scores on five occasions and a number of those students have been awarded the Premier’s Award for the top students in the State.
