grew up with a copy of the Desiderata stuck to the back of the toilet door. That hokey guide to a life lived well was all the go in the 1970s, and the observation that we are all “a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars” was a permanent comfort. As a result, I’m always open to a little homespun wisdom in the form of a catchy aphorism. Yes, life really can be reduced to a greeting card – that’s why clichés become hard currency: they ring true. So when I was sent this little item on Twitter the other day, the sender could have had no idea how deeply it would affect me. Have a look: “One awesome thing about Eeyore is that even though he is basically clinically depressed, he still gets invited to participate in adventures and shenanigans with all of his friends. And they never expect him to pretend to feel happy, they just love him anyway, and they never leave him behind or ask him to change.” Eeyore, the gloomy donkey from A.A. 12 The weekly review \ MARCH 19, 2014

so go about your day with a peg on the back of your head. Hysterical, yes, except that all those pegs have to fall somewhere. Then there’s the weird weight-loss posts with pictures of Fifi Box and eggs inside avocados littering my newsfeed. What are those? I never asked for them. Nor did I invite the spare buttons, those that come in individual plastic packets with new cardigans and slacks, into my house. They are currently residing in the bathroom cabinet alongside numerous nit-removing combs that accompany every bottle but pull at their hair just a bit so are never used, but kept, of course, because you just never know. Who makes these things? Who puts them in “stop it, the boxes and sticks the stickers on top? The stop the absorbent paper that lines the meat trays, now menus and red with blood. Strange little packets of beads that come with wraps and two-minute noodles. bread ties” All this to contend with and still, every day, new fast-food menus arrive in the letterbox. All for pizza, too, which I don’t eat, never for Thai or Vietnamese or Indian, which I’d much prefer. Now our fast-food menu collection is epic. It is spilling out of our kitchen drawer. It needs to be curated, itemised, alphabetised, because we may well have every current fast-food menu in circulation, but none for any food I would like to eat. Stop it, stop the menus and the bread ties, the nit combs and all the small, sticky stuff. I don’t want to not sweat it, I want to kiss it all goodbye. \ khall@theweeklyreview.com.au (iStockphoto \ THINKSTOCK)

Y

ou know the saying “don’t sweat the small stuff”? Well, this week I am because I’ve just discovered 2000 of those small plastic clippy things that go on the end of a loaf of bread – at the bottom of my freezer. And then, in the fruit bowl, an entire layer of apple stickers. It’s fruit sticker découpage. One of the kids is also using them to wallpaper the side of the once-very-nice chest-of-drawers in her room. They are there, carefully arranged alongside a collection of barcodes she’s pulled off the back of books and new sports socks, arranged in such a grand fashion because, maybe, like me, she just doesn’t know what to do with all these little bits of plastic stickiness that have no official name, no brand or special identity of their own, but were once quite useful in their own silly way. Every day I find them. The plastic ties that connect new clothes with price tags, which I never get around to cutting off, so they bite and itch and scratch their way through my day. The hair ties that lie in fuzzy corners all over my house, invisible when I need them. The lids of pens, once pretty useful, now obsolete but for the fun they give our puppy. Except when she chokes on them. Hairy, freestyle, inedible Mentos on the bottom of my bag, making friends with a mountain of supermarket and automatic teller receipts. Why, oh why, are receipts given out so freely? Who needs to prove they once bought a packet of carrots from the IGA or adds everything up just to make sure they got it right? In our house, clothes pegs are everywhere, too, because in our house a random, sneaky hug comes with the surreptitious planting of a clothes peg on your person. But you don’t know because it’s a trick, and

watches. So many new releases. So many glittering showcases and presentations. So many things to Instagram and Facebook. Second, the brand pavilions. Remember the World Expo ’88, in Brisbane? It’s like that, but every single brand is the New Zealand pavilion. They spend millions in an effort to outdo each other. It’s like an architectural and interior design space race of materials and magnitude. They are entirely ridiculous and fantastic. TAG Heuer’s pavilion looks like a giant spaceship that has split apart on impact with an alien planet. Breitling’s resembles the Melbourne Aquarium, with hotter models (male and female) at the entry. Rolex and Omega look just like you imagine: gigantic, towering edifices of sheer big-brand power. At this, the world’s largest watch fair – in Basel, Switzerland, and only weeks away – brands begin sharing their releases ahead of the jump. These are some of the highlights. \ amcutchen@theweeklyreview.com.au

Omega \ Speedmaster Mark II

Most men know a Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional when they see one. As far as luxury watches go, it’s instantly recognisable, relatively affordable, iconic and versatile. So, it’s great. Why then, re-release the Speedmaster II, first launched in 1969? Because, well, Omega can and when it comes to iconic designs, an inch is a mile: you need to change them only slightly to have a big impact on the overall look. The main differences between this and the Mark I are the barrel-shaped case in radially brushed steel and the

Maurice Lacroix is relatively young for a watch brand and is therefore considered in the “upstart” category. It handles the mantle well and uses it as something of a springboard to make interesting watches with dashes of flair and impressive levels of skill in their engineering. The soon-to-be-released 43-millimetre Masterpiece Gravity is a good example, with a large balance wheel on the dial and a partly open-worked case that reveals components made of silicon. They are lighter than metal and have less need for lubrication. More straightforward is its new Pontos S Supercharged dive watch, which has a huge 48-millimetre case size and bright colour-infused metals. Horses, and seahorses, for courses. POA

Blancpain \ Villeret

Blancpain is a brand favoured by Russian President Vladimir Putin, but don’t hold that against this high-end maison. Its cachet is in its experience – the company was founded in 1753 – and its elegance. No bells (apart from on its minute repeater models – watch-geek humour, sorry), no whistles, just the simple things done well. Such as an enamel “grand feu” dial on this new Villeret model that is fired at 1000 degrees, with the numerals retouched by hand. The eight days’ power reserve on this automatic winding 42-millimetre model hints at the mastery at work within the case; that’s roughly four times longer than average. POA

G

iven this is the only time anywhere in the world amateur drivers are allowed to drive on an F1 circuit in race week, I arrived at Albert Park for last week’s AMG F1 Challenge very excited. With Mercedes presenting a stable of 36 supercharged AMG cars to choose from, worth a combined total of more than $9 million, the thought of crashing one of these things was firmly in the front of my mind. The excitement went up a notch when I looked around and saw the likes of Mick Doohan getting into a car to join me on track (see link below). After a safety briefing, we were given the keys and an instructor and off we went in the incredible looking – and sounding – E63 AMG S. After five exhilarating laps the adrenalin was pumping and I managed to push the car to a top speed of 235km/h up the straight. A truly incredible experience! \ ptyrrell@theweeklyreview.com.au

bike torque \ Loz Blain rides the BMW K1300R

I

think I’m finally beginning to understand what BMW motorcycles are all about. And no, it’s not because I’m inching towards 40. Recently, on a trip to the German/Polish border to stay in a hand-carved tree house hotel, I had the opportunity to spend five or six hours driving a rental car on the autobahn – and it was a real eye opener. Firstly, I had assumed that “the autobahn” was a particular road or network of roads; it’s not – it’s any road with at least two lanes in each direction with a speed limit of 120km/h or above. It’s basically any German highway. Secondly, my Transport Accident Commissionbattered Victorian brain had me prepared to experience high-speed driving as some kind of naughty, irresponsible thrill. It was neither – and the fastest cars weren’t ostentatious sports cars, either. They were Audi, BMW and Mercedes sedans and station wagons. Quick, safe, efficient and matter-of-fact – that’s how Germans speed. And that was the experience that unlocked a layer of understanding for me for the K1300R. I’ve ridden it before and came away thinking: “This is one of the most powerful naked bikes on the planet, but somehow it’s not exciting me.” But now I think that might be my convict blood speaking – a perverse need for speed to be accompanied with a feeling of risk and a tendency to wheelie before I feel like I’m having fun. So when I picked up the K1300R this time I tried to get out of my own skin a little and see the bike through the eyes that designed it. And in a world where speed equals efficiency instead of fun, this bike is an absolute symphony of velocity. From a technology angle, BMW has just about thrown the kitchen sink at the K1300 series with ABS, traction control, heated grips, electronic suspension adjustment, tyre pressure sensors, quickshifter and immobiliser. Just 10 years ago this level of fitment would have sounded absolutely ludicrous, but on a 2013 BMW you quickly take them for granted. Each system works in concert to produce a wonderfully refined ride that’s rarely flustered by road conditions. Velocity: The 243-kilogram BMW K1300R is light and responsive despite a long wheelbase. (bmw motorrad) If you’re expecting the girder-like forkless front end to feel odd, think again. BMW’s duolever front-end suspension is a thing of beauty around town or flat-out in the twisties. buildings and tunnel adits for EastLink. They chose the creators of the witty works of art that adorn the 45 kilometres of this huge operation and had a major and unprecedented input into this significant project. As with most architectural practices in this country, Wood/Marsh houses are their most popular product. Individual houses have been produced along with major public commissions – a rare combination. The first Wood/Marsh house to capture public admiration was the Gottlieb House in Caulfield. Its major element form is an elliptical concrete drum. For good or bad, budget considerations cancelled the gold tiles that were to cover the drum, but this intriguing house went on to receive popular acclaim (and major awards). Their Barro House in Kew is a fairytale palace of precast and in-situ concrete rising from a pool. Each of their three buildings in Domain Road represents a completely different architectural style. The Corten house was followed by Isis apartments – a truncated, red-tiled pyramid. Now, a few blocks west, their latest apartment building is a Miesian Rubik’s Cube of steel and glass. In St Kilda Road, the dramatic four-leaf clover form of their Yve apartments is yet another experiment in shape. Most architectural offices develop a recognisable style over the years. It was once said of the respected practice of Grounds, Romberg and Boyd that they developed a new style for each building. This applies to Wood/Marsh, who have been referred in other respects to that earlier practice. A significant difference is that Wood/Marsh has already lasted three times longer than Grounds Romberg and Boyd. \

andal Marsh and Roger Wood graduated from RMIT in the 1970s with honours and by the time they were 30, the pair had a practice in the Gramercy Park district of Manhattan. After leaving university and the requisite training in local offices, they formed Biltmoderne and in 1988, Wood/Marsh, and to date the firm has received more than 30 state, national and international awards. They have achieved success in the field of infrastructure, exhibition and furniture design. Their work has created two dramatic urban vistas in Melbourne, apart from EastLink. Travelling east on Burwood Highway, past Warrigal Road, their two white towers (and four lower buildings) for Deakin University, loom up and give the chaotic campus a dramatic quality. Similarly, their black, curvaceous apartment towers now define Camberwell Junction. Wood/Marsh has also managed to introduce quality into the architectural desert of Docklands. Their Tower 5, topped with its witty “boat”, strikes a waterside note while housing air-conditioning excrescences. Not far away, at Southbank, their early triumph, ACCA, stands on a prominent site along with the long-mistreated Yellow Peril sculpture. This building, an early example of Corten, or pre-rusted, steel, is a successful gallery and exhibition space. Corten appears in their later houses. It was also used in their famous Australian Pavilion in Shanghai at Expo 2010. Despite a dreary official fit-out, the brilliant building was a hit of the fair, and consistently crowded. IRONIC ICONIC

O

\ RACHEL BERGER IS BOWLED OVER

(LUIS ENRIQUE ASCUi)

ne sunny afternoon strutting along Union Street in Windsor, I stopped “lawn to watch a bunch of bowls is a people in white outfits precision playing lawn bowls. sport” The game seemed indescribably slow so I had to concentrate to notice the teeniest crescendo. I was nevertheless transfixed but not sure what was holding my attention; soon I realised it wasn’t the motion of the bowls but the players themselves that were fascinating. The longer I watched the more it appeared as if the players of each team (doubles) had an awareness of things unsaid, thus enabling moves to be played out without discussion. Lawn bowls is a precision sport that requires the sort of hand-to-eye co-ordination that would turn me into a deranged sociopath. The bowls are biased so they don’t roll in a straight line but in a curve. This makes the skill of bowling extremely challenging because it relies on bowlers judging the distance, weight and their aim – at the same time. The aim of the game is to roll your bowl from the mat to the target (the jack) so it stops nearer to the jack than your opponent’s bowl. The size of the bowl can range from sizes 00–7 depending on the player’s age and the size of their hands; your grip is fundamental to your success. There are two main grips – the claw grip or the cradle grip – either way your bowl should sit upright in your hand, otherwise it will turn onto its side while rolling. I’m already on my knees whimpering!

melbourne’s lawn ranges

St Kilda Bowling Club Melbourne’s second-oldest lawn bowls club has operated continuously at its Fitzroy Street site from 1865. No need to polish your buttons or slip on your white shorts, it’s worth a visit simply to check out the original weatherboard pavilion designed by architect Sydney Smith and built in 1876 (later incorporated into the newer 1926 timber building). It is the earliest purpose-built bowling club building in Australia. Even the bowling green, although smaller, is still on its original 1865 site. The club’s longevity is due to its adaptability to changing demands; these days you can play serious bowls (or boules if you’re a Francophile) or go barefoot for a casual bowl, beer and live music. \

(Ken Robertson)

Based on artefacts found in tombs dating back roughly to 5000 BC, bowls historians believe the game developed from the Egyptians, who played skittles with round stones. The most famous story associated with lawn bowls took place on July 18, 1588. Sir Francis Drake was involved in a game at Plymouth Hoe when he was told that the Spanish Armada was in sight. His alleged response was, “We have time to finish the game”. He completed his match, and the British Navy defeated the Armada. I’m betting his membership at the club was later terminated because he tried to pay in Spanish doubloons. In Victoria, lawn bowls began as a private leisure pursuit played only by the colonial elite until “public” greens were established next to taverns and inns. Melbourne’s first bowling club, the Melbourne Bowling Club in Windsor, was founded by John Campbell in 1864. The club is on a large corner block behind Chapel Street and includes the clubhouse – the original double-storey brick building erected in Georgian style in 1887 – and a long, single-storey building added to the side in 1923. The extension contains all the honour boards and a trophy cabinet containing trophies and minute books dating from the formation of the club. This iconic club, with its 1970s décor, bar on one side and large windows on the other looking onto the two greens, was the major location for the movie Crackerjack starring Mick Molloy and Judith Lucy. \ boomboom@rachelberger.com

Bowls Clothing Etiquette

City of Melbourne Bowls Club

Bowls has a long history and tradition, and the distinctive mode of clothing worn by bowlers has a lot to do with not creating a distraction for other players. Nothing too brightly coloured, restrictive or revealing, no high heels (stilettos would murder the lawn), and gentlemen, if you’re wearing trouser braces, they must not show! Your outfit has to be comfortable for bending and stretching, but no Lycra. Like any sport, wearing the right clothing helps a player focus; once you’re in your outfit you’re in the zone. The traditional etiquette is for all items to be white: skirts, blouses and shoes for ladies, and trousers, shirts and shoes for men. \

Starting as the West Melbourne Lawn Bowls Club in 1866 at the Sablioniere Hotel (once on the corner of A’Beckett and Queen Streets), the City of Melbourne Bowls Club moved to the picturesque Flagstaff Gardens in 1879. Known as City Bowling Club (1904) the name changed to City Of Melbourne Bowls Club in 1964. In January 1994, fire destroyed a large part of the original clubhouse and its records. In a feat of resilience and tenacity, the club continued to operate and grow until a new six-energy-star clubhouse opened in 2009. It is an elegant venue in a sublime location perfect for a Pimms and a go at hitting the jack. \

ELWOOD \ 82 Tennyson Street “To strive, to seek, to find, and not to yield” are the famous words of poet Alfred, Lord Tennyson, but house-hunters whose hearts are set on the enclave of Elwood streets named after the aristocracy of English writers might do better to yield and bid. Families are expected to be the prime seekers and bidders for this red-brick house on a slightly elevated corner block in leafy Tennyson Street, 15 minutes’ walk to the beach. Exterior appeal is courtesy of a bay window, leadlight features and brick piers under a wide verandah and gabled roof. Two car spaces add practicality. The panelled hallway leads to a main bedroom with en suite, a second bedroom and adjoining formal rooms with built-in shelves and cupboards, and box beam ceilings. A sense of the original grandeur flows into the family room addition, which retains original ceiling heights and replicates the dark timber of the beams in its wooden floor. It incorporates a practical kitchen with stone benches, a deep pantry and crimson splashback, leads to a powder room and study, and offers access to the paved patio and pool. Upstairs, the kids’ zone – two bedrooms plus a central rumpus and bathroom – has attic-style charm thanks to the sloping roofline. Roof access adds storage and roof windows bring in extra light. / JACQUI HAMMERTON

Art, nature and architecture blend beautifully in this immaculate property full of light, space and feng shui influences. Every room enjoys a perfect view – even the large garage overlooks the landscaped front garden. Entertaining is geared towards the north-facing deck at the back, with a built-in pizza oven and barbecue on the large, all-weather deck with remote-controlled louvred roof. A cabana sits above the saltwater pool, where swimmers can perch on underwater bar stools to enjoy a drink. When the weather turns chilly, the two-way pebble gas fire warms the open-plan living zone that has a glass back wall, a lounge overlooking the pool and verdant lawn, dining area and fabulous Smeg and Caesarstone kitchen with digital-print and lime-green splashbacks and a butler’s pantry as big as the kitchen. The bathrooms are works of art in themselves: downstairs has a striking digital-print mirror while the resort-style open en suite of the parents’ retreat upstairs features a double shower and freestanding egg-shaped bath. \ TERESA MURPHY

The sparkling swimming pool takes centre stage at this light-filled four-year-old house, which has a contemporary façade of various shades of grey. The pool begins as a water feature at the front of the house before wrapping around one side of the building as a lap pool; it is visible from just about every room. A hallway that links the home office and formal dining room at the front with the open living/ meals/kitchen at the rear has a series of doors that fold back to create a decked entertainment area as wide as the block. The downstairs guest bedroom opens to one side of this deck. Up the central stairs, highlighted by dramatic pendant lights, is the main bedroom, which has a walk-in wardrobe beyond the snazzy skylit en suite, two other bedrooms that share a bathroom, and a study. The upstairs bedrooms look down through expanses of glass into the inviting water. The property, close to Were Street village and schools, is ready for the new owner to move in and dive right in. \ HARBANT GILL

Treehouse living reaches a new level in this house, with its multitude of oversized windows angled to capture the scenery and entertainment that come with a rare position alongside Elwood Canal. Local company InForm built the house 12 years ago on a triangular block where the waterway dissects Goldsmith Street. From its upper level – a family room and smart kitchen, balcony with awning and a spacious lounge room added at the front three years ago – the setting looks almost rural. Grassy banks and a shared pathway draw cyclists, dog walkers and toddlers feeding cockatoos, seagulls and fat white ducks. The path heads west to the beach, and a five-minute walk the other way reaches primary and secondary schools without crossing a road. The bedrooms are downstairs, separated by a rumpus room that opens to a shady deck. Two bedrooms face the rear synthetic-grass play area, and the main bedroom, with walk-in wardrobe and en suite, gains all-day light through windows on two sides and french doors to the secluded front lawn. \ JACQUI HAMMERTON

The Caribbean meets Beverly Hills at this property. Many a party has been postcode enjoyed here, where much of the 1056-square-metre property is dedicated to indoor-outdoor entertainment: the deep, cool and oh-so-beautiful verandah at the front overlooking the tiled pool spilling into a spa; a west-facing deck connecting the wings; and a huge top-floor terrace with views of ships and sea. That’s just the outside. Inside, the huge kitchen – with island bench, butler’s pantry and climate-controlled cellar – and family zone flow to the verandah through french doors, as does the formal dining room and large living space. Upstairs, another living area with a concealed bar has bay views, as does the main bedroom suite, which has walk-in wardrobes, an en suite, doors to the terrace, and another balcony. Two bedrooms downstairs have en suites and walk-in wardrobes. Other features include spotted gum floors, gas open fires and under-floor heating. \ TERESA MURPHY

If a front door is a measure of great architecture, then this contemporary residence has greatness in spades. Set above steps that organically flow through the garden, the door introduces us to the house’s DNA – clean lines, robust form, quality materials and a feat in design and engineering. The house was designed by award-winning architects Williams Boag, and every fitting, fixture, appliance and material is to the highest standard. First off the entrance is the main bedroom, which has built-in wardrobes and views of the tree-lined street. The en suite is beautiful and opens to its own courtyard, creating a spa-like retreat. Out the back is a gigantic open-plan living, dining and kitchen area that looks out to a north-facing deck and garden. Recycled blackbutt floorboards offer character, while the streamlined kitchen is generous and has Miele and Smeg appliances and Corian and Caesarstone benches. Upstairs are two spacious bedrooms, with a family-sized bathroom and a large living area with a kitchenette and a wide deck. \ FRANCESCA CARTER

Two months before the vendors bought this grand bank building in 1995, the bank was robbed, with the bandit later caught in the supermarket across the road. History lives on in this fascinating 1923 Georgian-style building, including the huge vault where gold bars were once stored that would make a fine wine cellar. Downstairs includes the original State Bank shopfront, with arched windows and a door to Station Street, and a self-contained flat with kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living. Upstairs – where bank managers once lived – has another huge space with modern kitchen, dining and living opening to a north-facing terrace, two bedrooms and the main bedroom suite. Above the original staircase is a magnificent stained-glass window the vendors – former antique dealers – bought from an old Brighton school. The rooftop terrace is literally the crowning glory with its wraparound views of sea and village – and water, gas and electricity connected. “We felt like the king and queen of Sandringham living here,” say the vendors. \ TERESA MURPHY
