SMGS VISIT VILLAMARTIN

San Miguel Golf Society’s monthly trip to the very popular Villamartin venue was heralded by glorious Spanish sunshine, even at the un-Godly hour that we started from the unfriendly 10th tee. Over thirty members and guests obviously used a very efficient array of alarm clocks, phones and other super technological contraptions to all arrive on time for the eight early morning flights. There were quite a few white, hairy and wiry things hanging out of crisply pressed shorts and before you get the wrong idea – they were actually legs that hadn’t seen a decent day’s sunshine for many a month. Good scoring conditions coupled with a course in lovely condition

TORREVIEJA GOLF SOCIETY

looked like it was going to result in a bagful of Stableford points all round…..apart, that is, from the few who purposely go all out for the coveted “Abacus” award for bottom of the shop! It was an early finish culminating in a super atmosphere on the terrace over-looking the 18th where the prizes were given out by captain, Steve Davis, aided and abetted by his vice, Phil de Lacy. Glen Rapley, Klaus John, Ted Hurley and Mick Cook collected the NTP awards and the visitor’s top two prizes went to Dave Richards (34) and Andy Whiteley (33). Silver category’s top three were Bill Preston (29), Ellen Drakesmith (30) and Norman Padmore (36) hitting top slot as he often does! The gold division was a more tightly contested affair with Keith Wickham in 3rd place with 37, Phil de Lacy in 2nd with the same tally but edging it on C/B. It was left to one of the society’s top players to come in with top score of the day, Barry Roehrig with a tremendous 39……funny isn’t it? He’s handicap secretary as well. The Staines family were having a quiet dinner in that evening so Jenny obligingly won the fine bottle of Rioja which was this week’s “Abacus” prize. Well done to all the winners. Don’t forget to visit www.smgs.org or give Barry a quick buzz on 966 731 033 to have a look at all society matters and details of all the forthcoming Wednesday meetings.

EUROGOLF, LA MARQUESA 43 members took part in the April Monthly Medal at our home course of La Marquesa on Thursday 4 April 2013. At Mar Menor on 1st April. It is disappointing to report that we again experienced an extremely windy day for the latest visit to our home course Mar Menor Village although the saving grace was that the wind this time was warm. So far this year we have had to endure similar windy playing conditions on all but three of our Monday fixtures and it certainly does not make the game any easier! The course which is usually immaculately maintained was unfortunately not at its best and the greens and tees in particular were very patchy. Scores on the day, unsurprisingly given the difficult conditions, were poor and only 3 players managed to score 30 points or more with the Captain, Dean Charles, continuing his recent excellent form by comfortably winning division 1 in the Stableford Competition albeit with 33 points only. The scores in division 2 by comparison were even more disappointing and all the winners in this category were probably shocked that they featured in the prizes. The winners on the day were: Category 1: 1st Dean Charles with 33 points. 2nd Charlie Rodgers with 30 points on count back better last 9 holes. 3rd John Edwards with 30 points. Category 2: 1st Chris Byron with 26 points. 2nd Lyn Hills with 24 points on count back. 3rd James Herbert with 24 points on count back.

Back Nine: Paul Manning 34.5 OVERALL WINNER OF MARCH MONTHLY MEDAL – DAVID NICHOLLS. Football Winners: Keith Wright, Tony Stanley, Doug Spiring and Dave Nicholls.

Nearest the Pin prizes were won by Peter Flood, Ron Smith (2) and Charlie Rodgers with Ron winning the 2’s prize fund exclusively. The football card draw was won this week by Charlie Rodgers.

EL PLANTIO 2 GOLF SOCIETY Tuesday 2nd April 2013 Yellow Ball Summertime and April with a new start, sunny and a big number of 18 players today including our two ladies Elsa and Lyn, good to see both of you back giving some much needed colour to an otherwise greyish collection of elderly men. Checking in I was shocked to see that in the draw they had given me the Scottish Connection with Ian H and Dave S and then Gordon A gave me the yellow ball with the message that we had to start at the 3rd! Fortunately it turned out to be Dave with the yellow ball, as my tee shot drifted to the right, flying high over the pond but then hitting the blue lining dropped back into the water. Bad start but Ian and Dave landed both in the right hand bunker and finished with some points. We continued our game in the same fashion, like on the 8th where Dave with the yellow ball landed his tee shot on the green but then from about two meters three-putted to finish with a 4 for 2 points. Looking at other teams struggling with their finishes he muttered something like whether there would be a major fight for the booby position! Anyway we managed to keep our yellow ball safely in play scoring regularly and returned finally with all other teams shortly after twelve to the clubhouse. Out of the starting set of 6 yellow balls only 2 were returned and one team managed to lose the yellow three times!

Before the presentation Ray informed us that he just got a message from Charlie that Charlie’s wife had passed away. Our condolences Charlie, we sincerely hope that you yourself will recover over time and we will see you back in our midst in the future. The NTPs today went to yours truly on the 5th – beating Gordon W by an inch – and to Dave Swann on the 9th hole. Rather low scores today so in third place with 117 points finished Mark, George Stanhope and Dave Swann and in second with 120 points we saw Ray Housley, Lyn Young and Frank Stanhope (both Stanhopes in the top three again!). The winner with 126 points was our team with Ian Henderson – smiling brightly as usual – Dave Smith and yours truly. So all is well that ends well! The chainsaw will have a day off I suppose. The last match of the March battle between Kenny and Frank was won by Kenny with one point, so he took March with 6-4. Today Frank took an early 1-0 lead for April. Next Tuesday’s competition 9th April at El Plantio will be the simplest individual game, Stableford. Put your name down by the Sunday before and make sure to be there on Tuesday on time well before 09.30. See you all in good health! Visitors are welcome, contact Ian Henderson, tel 966716616 or mobile 636 116 230.

ALBATROSS GOLF LEAGUE Round 1 – Alhama Signature Round 1 of the Albatross Golf League was played at the fantastic Alhama Signature course on 26th March. We normally play this course later in the year but due to hollow tine dates our ‘longest drive’ was pulled forward. Anyone who has played this course before will tell you just how good it is and tough, however, combine this with a greenkeeper who must have had too much vino the night before as the pin positions were in some unrealistic/unplayable positions (what was going on on the 13th Green!!) which all meant that scoring was going to be on the low side. With 51 players only Geoff Proudfoot (1st with 34pts) and Fran Cunningham (2nd with 33pts) both from Chemies GS managed more than 31pts. Despite only having 3 players Chemies also won the main team event although this was a very close affair with 3 teams all on 96pts (12 Over Par!) and 7 teams all within 6 points! Next event is at Hacienda Del Alamo – already fully booked! Nearest The Pins (Sponsored by Mick The Grip) – 3rd Martin Moore, 7th Alan Nash, 11th Gary Gillespie, 17th John McAdam. – 2’s club – just one David Grey well done 64€ (just as well you had to walk!). Individual – 1st Geoff Proudfoot (Chemies GS) – 34pts, 2nd Fran Cunningham (Chemies) 33pts Team – 1st Chemies 96pts, 2nd Ebony & Ivory 96pts, 3rd Elite B 96pts, 4th Katie Reillys 94pts, 5th Breakaways 93pts, 6th Brenda’s Babes 91pts, 7th Team Shaky 90pts, 8th Elite A 84pts, 9th Royal Oak A 82pts, 10th Moores Spurs 73pts, 11th Albatross 70pts, 12th La Rioja 70pts, 13th Royal Oak B 62pts.
