Architectural Digest of Ellicottville A Rare Opportunity: Living Space & Income Property

Back in 1989 a couple of ski loving Canadian families decided to build a duplex overlooking the slopes at HoliMont. The one common area they created is the deck that runs along the front of the units to facilitate cocktail hour conversation. It’s obvious from the start that these units were designed with skiing in mind. Out the windows, HoliMont seems almost close enough to touch.

Day Trippin’ Pumpkinville: Great Valley Family Attraction Takes You Back in Time

Business Opportunities!

BY MEGAN O’DONNELL ST. BONAVENTURE UNIVERSITY

Take a step back in time to the days of homemade apple cider, freshly baked pies and homegrown pumpkins brought right to you in Great Valley, NY. Pumpkinville, open since the late 1960’s, has been bringing clean, family fun to people all over western New York and beyond. “I think we give them (people) a chance to come to the country and just be able to relax … and unwind a little bit and see how things grow,” owner Dan Pawlowski said. Pumpkinville not only provides people a place to come and pick out a pumpkin, but a place where families can spend time outdoors in activities especially suited for the fall. Kids of all ages, including adults, can enjoy hayrides, cow trains, corn mazes, a petting zoo and much more! For those who love fall foods will love what Pumpkinville offers up. People can enjoy freshly made apple cider, pumpkin and apple pies and all the different foods offered to people at the BBQ shack and three-year-old bakery. However, what Pumpkinville may be most famous for is its pumpkin donuts. “We’ve had to double our capacity this year,” Pawlowski said. “Last year we had a hard time keeping up.” This year, the Pawlowski’s have added more homemade items to their delectable menu. Now people can enjoy

homemade caramel on top of their apples and many different flavors of homemade ice cream. “We’ve always served ice cream, but we always served pumpkin and vanilla, and we’re going to add a number of flavors (this year). Pawlowski said. “And we’re actually going to make homemade ice cream right here.” Pumpkinville transports people back to an age where things were always fresh, always friendly and always for the family. The Pawlowski’s 1875 cider mill and farm gives people a glimpse to what used to be. “You can see it (cider) made on one end and get it on the other end,” Pawlowski said. “You can walk right out here in the field to see how they are growing right on the vine…

get people close to the earth, see the farm animals.” Adding to the rustic feel, the Pawlowski’s also sell different types of crafts; especially those related to harvest and fall season. “We’re really more about the farm and family entertainment,” Pawlowski said. “We’re more in the business of fall harvest and not Halloween, but we do have a little spooky house.” Pumpkinville has no admission, but rides and other activities are $3.50 per ticket or three for $10. Pumpkinville opens September 18 and runs until Halloween, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. rain or shine. For more information visit www. pumpkinville.com or call 716699-2205.(More photos page, A-12)

There will be make your own stick-horse sessions and prizes awarded for most creative. Breakfast with Santa will take place Saturday and Sunday at the Kelly House Lodge. The annual event will also provide carriage rides, singers, carolers, and pictures and fire truck rides with Santa.

Day Trippin’ Nightmare Hayrides Features a Terrifying Maze and Haunted Barn BY ERIC HUND UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH Thrills and chills await the adventurous at the 20th annual Nightmare Hayride which opened last Friday, Oct. 1. The Nightmare Hayride will run every Friday, Saturday and Sunday in October from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. The show, which is located at the home of the Ellicottville Rodeo, takes about 45 minutes and features a 25-minute tractor drawn hayride along the creepy path of Sommerville Street and a 20-minute walk through the terrifying maze and a haunted barn containing the vortex tunnel. Owner John Kent said he started the Halloween horror show 20-years-ago because he enjoyed entertaining people, especially kids. “Halloween is the second most popular holiday after Christmas, and some people prefer Halloween because, with Christmas, you have to give out presents, but for Halloween all you need to do is frighten

people,” he said. He has completely remodeled the barn over the past two years, and he has updated various aspects of the show to make it more interesting and spooky. “If you thought you’ve seen it all before, well it has changed again,” he said. He added that 50 people can ride on each wagon, and that he has seven tractors and wagons available. “If you show up and there is a long line, don’t worry because you’ll only have to wait 10 to 15 minutes for another wagon,” Kent said. He added that the show is fun for the whole family and all age groups. The site also features a cook shack where patrons can purchase soft drinks, hot cider and chocolate, coffee, hamburgers, hotdogs and pizza, and a pavilion where people can sit and recount their horror stories. The hayride costs $15 per person, or $14 for groups of 25 or more if paid by one individual, and children under

I’m still trying to figure out how it seemed to sneak up so quickly, but Fall Festival is here and what a wonderful weekend it will be! Turkeys and cranberry sauce in our local grocery store remind me that our Canadian friends and families are celebrating Thanksgiving and that means I will soon be making lists for our American Thanksgiving next month. For most of us, the first thing that comes to mind with Thanksgiving is family—we gather from near and far to spend a few short wonderful days even if we must tolerate the nearly inevitable travel headaches of driving and flying. These few precious days of being together reminds us how important it is to make the effort to get together with generations of our families. We all agree that family reunions fit the bill, but every “hey, let’s plan a reunion” is quickly followed by “but I hope somebody else will plan it.” There are many factors to consider: families are scattered around the country, work schedules, school schedules, accommodations, meal planning, shopping, preparation, and clean up. Let’s not forget activities to keep the toddlers, teens, parents, and seniors all happy and occupied. It can be an overwhelming task for someone who may end up being too stressed out in the end to even enjoy the gathering. Wouldn’t it be great to have someone else do all the planning and you just show up and start enjoying yourself? Well, good news, folks! It’s called a family reunion cruise. The hardest part may be deciding where to cruise to—Mexico, Alaska, the Caribbean, Europe, New England—you have the world to choose from and something to fit every budget and time frame. Using the experience and knowledge of a cruise expert

Home CONT. FROM PAGE B-1 room a huge wall of windows dominates the space. Out the windows, HoliMont seems almost close enough to touch. Left of the windows, the cream colored walls hold the fireplace and hearth. Over the fireplace a wire sculpture of a snowboarder carves a turn on the walls. Still turning to my left the breakfast bar separates the room from the kitchen. The cathedral ceiling extends over the kitchen and makes the relatively small area seem a lot larger. The appliances are laid out to create an efficient workspace. Over in the dining area the table is set in a bright corner. A tiffany lamp provides illumination, and the benches for the dining table encourage family-style dining. Across the stairwell a little alcove has been carved out for the entertainment center. With a sofa and an easy chair it’s a cozy spot for watching TV. The wall along the backside of the great room has been painted a dark forest green; it provides a compliment to the cream walls

is essential. He / she (or me) must know the differences between all the different cruise lines and also the ships with each fleet. This agent must ask very specific questions about ages, favorite activities, likes, dislikes, dietary preferences, physical and health limitations, to name a few, in order to find the right fit. Royal Caribbean International for example, offers an exceptional experience for multi-generational families onboard. Large suites with as many as four bedrooms and four bathrooms are available in addition to connecting cabins and balconies to allow individual space and also easy access to each other. A typical reunion will have 30-40 members with ages ranging between 6 months to 90 years, so RCI is ideal with excellent programs for toddlers through teens including many age groupings so 10 year-olds are not in the same group as 7 year-olds. There is after-hours baby sitting available in your cabin in case Mom and Dad want to enjoy some of the many late-night activities. There are separate pool areas for small children out of earshot of the tranquil adults-only pool. Young adults between 18 and 21 have limited organized activities but guests can go online to sites like Cruise Critic to find other passengers sailing on the same cruise with similar ages and interests, so there will be built in buddies when they board the ship. Open dining options allow families to eat all together one evening or pair off if they choose—whenever they want and still enjoy the same menu as traditional dining. All the cooking, serving and clean up is done for you with something on the menu for the pickiest of eaters. Even within the 22 ships in the Royal Caribbean fleet, it is necessary to have a good fit with the right ship. Family members that have their heart set on surfing or zip lining onboard need an agent that knows that these features are available on the newest mega ships in the fleet only. While these colossal floating wonders offer boundless onboard options, and entire family of first time cruisers could find this overwhelming, so one of the smaller ships in the fleet would offer nearly as many options and still have the family feel as though they were in the same time zone with each other. What if your family reunion happens to include only adult siblings, spouses, and parents? In this case, video game rooms and teen PJ parties on the top deck are not a priority. They should consider a cruise line like Crystal, Seabourn, or Regent. While these lines do offer some limited programs for the few youngsters that may be onboard, these high-end luxury cruise lines boast gourmet dining, enrichment lectures, language and computer classes, and famous guest speakers on smaller, intimate vessels.

Unlimited top shelf liquor, all gratuities, butler service, and shore excursions are included. These shore excursions may be the priority for choosing particular itineraries. Two or three full days docked in St. Petersburg, Russia for example, may include tickets to the Russian opera or ballet and a meal served in state dinner style at the Kremlin. One of the best reasons for a family reunion cruise is that you can choose how much time you actually spend with everyone else. Some families start the day with breakfast together, take excursions, enjoy spa treatments together, have dinner, see the shows, head back to their cabins next door to each other and still chat for 10 minutes before saying goodnight. Other members may be perfectly happy to share their days’ adventures over dinner, wish everyone sweet dreams, and enjoy the walk to their own cabin 10 floors away. So, now that I’ve got you convinced to have your next family reunion on a cruise ship, here are some tips to keep in mind: • Work with an experienced cruise agent to find the best fit of cruise line, ship, and itinerary. He / she / (or me) will also remind you of necessary travel documents, visas, boarding passes, arrange dinner seatings, private shore excursions, and even fun gift goodies. • Start the planning process as far ahead as possible—a year is a good time window for family members to get time off work. Also, prices are lower and you have more options with cabin selections. • Take advantage of the group coordinator onboard to arrange group shore excursions, private parties or group photos. The cruise may be a great time to renew marriage vows and celebrate with the whole family, and after making arrangements ahead of time, the coordinator will see to it that all goes perfectly. • Purchase walkie-talkies and use them to find family members quickly onboard. • Travel insurance is a must— in the unexpected event of a family member falling ill and cancelling their plans, your plans may need to be cancelled too. Disappointment aside, the insurance would at least protect you against the potential total loss of your investment. The best part about a family reunion cruise is no matter how time is spent onboard or on shore, everyone can be happy doing exactly what they want and still make the memories that give families the reasons to thankful for each other. For any questions or booking information on cruises, private shore excursions, and all-inclusive resorts, contact Felicia Livingston ,MCC, Cruise Planners’ Franchise Owner; at flivingston@ cruiseplanners.com or visit her website at: www. whateverfloatsyourboat.biz

and beige sculpted carpet. In all, the great room is a warm and cozy space and the perfect spot to unwind at the end of a day’s skiing. Downstairs is two full baths and three bedrooms. The master bedroom is the largest of the three. One bedroom has two bunk beds and the other has a full-sized bed with a bunk bed over it. With its plethora of beds the unit can sleep nine in a pinch. I couldn’t help but admire the wisdom of the families that built the homes, with the only connection between the two units being the aforementioned deck, they were close enough to enjoy each others company but could still separate if they started to get on each others nerves. With its addition the second unit is larger than the first, climbing the stairs past the cubbies and closet in the mudroom, I enter a huge great room. With its hardwood flooring, pastel blue walls and contemporary furniture this side feels like permanent living space. The huge bank of windows mirror the windows in the first unit - but here the layout is different. The space is bright and airy, and has room to stretch out and relax. The kitchen is integrated into

the living space; the breakfast bar is its only division from the living area, and there is plenty of room for a large dining table. In the living area a large fireplace provides warmth. Along the common wall there is room to create an opening between the units, and create a single large house. The master bedroom is almost carnivorous with its high ceiling and overhead window. This master has its own bath making it a full master suite. Downstairs are three more bedrooms and 2 full baths. Together both sides are a unique opening to obtain living and income property. The first side has all the charm of a cozy ski cabin, while the larger side has the feel of a year round home. Only seconds from HoliMont, either side would make excellent rental space or year round living. The choice is yours; the opportunity awaits. There will be an open house at the duplex Sat. Oct. 9 from 10:00am to 1:00pm. The address is: 6870 Springs Rd. Ellicottville. This property is listed by Vicki Emke, Associate Broker, who is holding the open house. Creative Corner Where I’m From: (Ski) Poem BY, GENEVIEVE WAGNER, MORELAND HILLS, OHIO I am from skiing. Snow caps, and mittens, scattered across the floor. I am from the cold winds, feeling as frozen as an ice cube, and the wonderful warm relief of hot cocoa. I am Holimont and Holiday Valley. Spending those cold winter days up and down and all around, from green trails, to black diamonds. I am from the old squeaky chair lifts that carry me through the woods, from “tips up! and “bar down! echoing through the trees. I am from the crispy waffles in the hut at the bottom of the mountain and the chili waiting for me in the lodge. From those goggles and boots, stowed away , for my next adventure. As we anticipate ski season, 11-year-old Genevieve wrote this poem. She is a current 6th grader at Brady Middle School, Orange Schools, residing in Moreland Hills, OH.

Friends of Good Music in association with The Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts at St. Bonaventure University present the 29th annual concert season. Calmus Vocal Ensemble: First Prize Winner of the 2009 Concert Artists Guild International Competition. Founded in 1999 in Germany, this acappella quintet embodies the rich choral tradition of Leipzig, the city so closely associated with Bach and Mendelssohn. What captivates critics and audiences is not only the group’s riveting stage presence and sublime technique but also a diverse repertoire conveyed with great respect, joy and fun. Calmus programs seamlessly link works by the renaissance and baroque masters with great German romantic works, as well as contemporary pieces and popular songs. For more information on this event please visit http://www.FriendsOfGoodMusic. com.
