It’s up and running. The new Olean General Hospital Outpatient Surgery Center is now open, following a grand opening event held on Thursday and May 31st and June 1st. The $10.3-million project is located at 500 Main Street, just across the street from the main hospital campus. The new center consists of a 15,174 square foot addition and a complete renovation of 6,384 square feet of existing space. Four new operating suites were constructed, as well as three endoscopy labs, 23 pre-operative and post-operative beds, a six-bed post-anesthesia care unit, a waiting room, a consultation area, and support space. Tim Finan, President and CEO of Upper Allegheny Health System, is enthusiastic about what the new outpatient center brings to the local community. Finan notes, “It’s the first of its kind facility in this area, dedicated exclusively to outpatient surgery. Two men walk slowly and deliberately across an open section of the graveyard. One of them drags an odd looking orange box along the ground, while the other follows behind and stares into a device strapped to his chest. Every few moments the man looking at the device on his chest touches a button on its control panel. While they might look like modern day treasure hunters, they are not looking for gold. They are looking for people. As part of the Jefferson Street Cemetery Restoration Project the Historical Society has commissioned students and faculty from the Archeological Field School at Buffalo State University to use ground penetrating radar to search for unmarked graves in the cemetery. The man dragging the orange box is Brian McGrath a student at Buffalo

The image of the return is shown on the device strapped to Prof. Kevin Williams, also of Buffalo State. He points out that they will not be able to see actual skeletons or bones of anybody interred there, but they will be able to tell if the ground underneath had been dug up. This would mean it’s likely that someone is there in an unmarked grave. The students laid out a rectangular grid using tape measures, orange tape and flags. By coordinating the markers on the tape with the digitized read out from the radar, they will be able to produce a map of the unmarked graves. “There are at least a dozen unmarked

Honorary Survivor’s Liz and Jerry Titus thanked everyone for supporting Relay and gave detailed stories about their experience with battling cancer; emphasizing how important it is to get proper screenings and if you are diagnosed with cancer how a positive attitude can make all the difference in the world. That positive demeanor was evident during the Survivor Lap, where cancer survivors of all ages and backgrounds came together for a moment of commonality and support.

A Big Thank You!

The Alley Katz Thanks to all the volunteers who showed up on June 4th Thanks to all the volunteers who showed up on June 4th, the Alley Katz were able to plant all the whiskey barrels, the beds at Creekside and Coffee Culture, and hang up the baskets around town. All this was accomplished in a few short hours due to the large number of people who showed up to help. Thanks to all of you. In addition, the helpers were treated to soup and salad at

Katy’s Kafe. Katy not only prepared two delicious soups and salad but the group also got to sample her baking with luscious strawberry cupcakes. Thanks Katy for donating all this. Thanks are also extended to Leah and Rudy at Anew Beginning Massage and Spa who provided the beverages for this luncheon. Everything looks beautiful and will continue to grow and

to be more lavish as the summer progresses. We look forward to our regular Alley Katz group meeting every Tuesday at 9 through the summer months. Come join us any week in front of the M & T Bank. Thanks to Dina’s for continuing to provide us with coffee every Tuesday after we care for the plants. What a fine example of a village working together!

1977 alumna named executive director of alumni operations at SBU

ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y., May 30, 2012 — Monica Mattioli, class of 1977, has been named executive director of  alumni operations, a new position at St. Bonaventure University created to maximize the potential of more than 25,000 alumni. An associate dean and adjunct business instructor at Genesee Community College since 2009, Mattioli will be introduced to

hundreds of alumni this weekend at the university’s annual Reunion Weekend, running from Friday until Sunday. “We’re thrilled to have Monica on board, and confident her passion for her alma mater will help us tap into the unlimited potential of our extraordinary alumni,” said Mary Driscoll, vice president for university advancement. “Joe Flanagan has done a remarkable job for years as our alumni director, but we’ve reached the point with our growing alumni base that he just can’t do it alone anymore.”   The position was created with the intention of strengthening the strategic planning of alumni operations, enhancing the role of alumni chapters, and working in partnership with the university’s new Career and Professional Readiness Center to bring more alumni into the fold for career, internship and speaking opportunities.   “I am thrilled to return home

to St. Bonaventure, to work with our extraordinary alumni, and to contribute to the university’s tradition of infusing spirit into life,” Mattioli said. Mattioli was also executive director of Rochester’s Downtown Community Forum; director of development at Mercy Outreach Center; director of corporate compliance at Catholic Family Center in Rochester; senior director of marketing and public relations at Genesee Country Museum; director of marketing and recruitment at Roberts Wesleyan College; and an account specialist with several firms, including Bausch & Lomb and Sentry Group in Rochester.   Mattioli graduated with honors from St. Bonaventure with a degree in modern languages, and earned her master’s in management and strategic leadership at Roberts Wesleyan. She has been on SBU’s National Alumni Association Board since 2008.

Kazoo II: Continuing Growth after the Big Move

Slope Side Charmer

Story and Photos By John Thomas Staff Writer Serious skiers only please. As much as virtually every house in Ellicottville could be described as a ski house. This home lives, sleep, eats, skiing. Only about 100 yards from the main entrance at HoliMont living here would be a skiers paradise. But this is more than just snow boarders crash pad. Inside, this home has an intriguing old world style charm that is at once delightful and comfortable. Open beam ceilings adorn the living room and kitchen. The ceilings are painted white and the beams are dark brown, giving the home a distinct Tudor look that is quite beguiling. Over in the kitchen, the dark beams and brick floor are the perfect counterpoint to the sleek white cabinets and counter tops. The

dining area maintains the old country charm with its beamed ceiling, pegged wood floor and dark paneled wall covering. There is a side entrance with a mud room for stowing ski gear, that is accessed from the wrap around deck. In the sitting area the cathedral ceiling rises to a dramatic height. There is a wood burning fireplace with a beautiful copper hood. It’s the perfect place to relax with a hot toddy. The master bedroom on the main floor continues in the Tudor style. There is a sliding glass door to the deck and the windows flood the room with light. A generous master bath completes the suite. Upstairs is a sleeping loft to accommodate the rest of the gang. If your a serious skier or rider, you can’t go wrong with a house only a few yards from HoliMont. It puts some of the best slopes around practically at your front

door. What about the rest of the year you ask? With all the Summer festivals Ellicottville is quickly becoming a year round destination, and its many shops and restaurants are also close by. For more information about this property contact Larry Oeffling Broker/Owner at Ellicottville Real Estate, 716-699-6748.

Only steps from the main entrance to HoliMont, this is a home for serious skiiers. Kazoo II has very recently undergone a move to a more convenient location, across the street from the previous location. Everything is now on one floor and is much more accessible compared to the older version which had two stories.

My name is Sharon Saporito and I need your help! Hi, My name is Sharon Saporito and I am in need of a kidney due to PKD. I was currently preparing for my transplant when it was discovered that my blood had developed an antibody. I was devastated. The team then tested the remaining three donors and found they also were no longer compatible. I never thought I would be in this position since I had so much support from friends and family. I went from having four possible donors to none. It has been a heart breaking situation to say the least. I am in excellent health except for my kidneys. I am blood type B and could receive a kidney from a B or O blood type. An exchange, I am sure would be possible. Please contact me if you can be of help!

Nestled in the quaint town of Ellicottville, NY, there is a treasure that cannot be stolen, yet is known by many people. What could this possibly be you ask? Kazoo II, owned and operated by Arlene for 20 years, as of 2012. Kazoo II has very recently undergone a move to a more convenient location, across the street from the previous location. Everything is now on one floor and is much more accessible compared to the older version which had two stories. Arlene believes that

Cont. From Cover graves here,” says Lisa Marie Anselmi Ph. D. coordinator of the effort. There are several open areas of the burial ground that the Historical Society believes contain unmarked graves. The records of who is interred in those empty areas were lost in the fire that consumed town hall many years ago. Yet there are several families in the area who

the move will have an overall positive effect in regards to customer sales and volume. There are many recurring, and new customers who come to visit Kazoo II on a regular basis, including locals and visitors from afar. Arlene bases her surmounting success on the fact that these customers continue to be loyal, and spread the word of how amazing and unique this store really is. Arlene often travels in search of different and culturally diverse products to supply her store with, “I bring different cultures to this store.” Perhaps this is why Kazoo II attracts so

many different customers. With all of the diverse products, everyone is bound to find something they love! When asked about the store’s future, Arlene stated that she wishes to keep Kazoo II growing and flourishing throughout future years. She plans to do this by continuing to travel around the world collecting new and unique products to advertise in her store. Kazoo II will always be able to remain fresh and unique, continuously offering new, amazing products that will appeal to each of it’s customers. Come visit Kazoo II in Ellicottville, NY!

are certain they have relatives buried there, but no marker exists to confirm it. There is an account from the old Ellicottville Post of the passing of Viola Betty in 1897 that says she was buried there, but there is no headstone to mark her final resting place. At least two other people are documented residents without markers. Gail Carucci of the Historical Society, who has been heading up restoration project, says they will eventually have a map of all the unmarked graves, but she doubts they will ever be able to associate names to all the burial sites. Eventually a single

marker will be commissioned to represent all the unknowns in the ground. Ground penetrating radar is often used in the construction industry to find underground pipes, wires, and structures, before the area is dug up. It produces an image that looks a bit like a sonogram and requires a trained interpreter to read. Prof. Williams points out that areas of buried rock or gravel can look like a grave site. When asked if he spends much time traipsing around graveyards, he laughs and says, “this is my first cemetery!”

it’s finished.” The new center will start by handling outpatient endoscopy procedures, with the outpatient surgery beginning to move over from the hospital in a few weeks time. The new center will handle all types of outpatient surgery. That’s except for any person who is at very high risk medically, when the outpatient procedure will be done in the hospital. Finan says that’s typical of any community outpatient setting. “That’s just because of the additional resources an inpatient facility can provide, should something untoward happen. But 99 percent of the outpatient procedures will be done in this (new) facility.” Finan says there are lots of ideas about how to use the vacated space at Olean General Hospital, once the outpatient facilities move, but he is sure that it will be put to good use. Will the new facility be helpful in attracting physicians to Olean? Finan thinks that’s true, “Because it makes a very strong statement about the hospital. The whole experience, not just for patients but for all our providers, will be

much more efficient. So I think it will be very helpful in terms of recruitment. We think it will be very helpful in terms of (doctor) retention as well. The new outpatient center is named in honor of Mildred “Millie” Milliman, who provided Olean General Hospital with $25-million over the course of her life and upon her death. Millie, who died at a little over 100 years of age, was a switchboard operator at the hospital who retired in 1975. Her uncle was one of the founders of what became UPS. Finan says, “There were several hundred shares of UPS stock left to Millie. She kept it off to the side for fifty years, and then started to make very generous gifts to the community. She believed that Olean General Hospital is a facility that would impact everyone in this community. We will be forever in her debt. She was just a magnificent lady, incredibly generous.” In honor of the grand opening occasion, a 1926 Model T Ford, one of the original UPS delivery trucks, was displayed outside the new outpatient center.

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9-box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!
