Architectural Digest of Ellicottville Story and Photos By John Thomas Eventually winter is going to find its way to Ellicottville, and when it does the ski season will kick in with gusto and last well into the spring. What could be better than a ski home in town that pays for itself? Extensively updated by the owners, this home has gone from a single, family ranch-style home to virtually a duplex with full living quarters on two levels. The lower level at one point was nothing more than cement walls and a floor. But now it’s a comfortable and warm living area. On the ground floor the home was remodeled with new walls and floors

throughout, a new kitchen, and a handsome wood flooring in the living room. The result is a fine, attractive upper living area and a lower floor that can easily be rented out for ski season, or can accommodate a whole passel of family. Ensconced on about two acres of land just outside of the village, it’s close to skiing and downtown. From the deck in the back, the view scans across the Great Valley Creek to the hillside. In the backyard is an old pool house, which is now converted to storage. The twocar garage doubles as a hot tub and a game area. The simple exterior lines of the home conceal the improvements

Simple and Versatile

inside. The main floor now has a large kitchen with a breakfast bar and dining area. There are three bedrooms and two bathrooms here, as well as a mud room off the garage. At the bottom of the stairs is the laundry, so it’s accessible to people on both levels of the house. The lower level features a second large complete kitchen, a spacious living/family room, three more bedrooms and a bath. The owner tells me it has an excellent rental history. It’s a perfect way to have a ski country home, and income as well. For more information about this property contact Tina Dillon at ERA Team VP Real Estate 716474-5646

Bottom Left: The kitchen on the lower floor is well equipped and spacious. Bottom Middle: The main room on the lower floor has beautiful wood flooring and a built in electric fireplace. Top Right: Set on about two acres just outside the village this home has two full living levels. Bottom Right: The kitchen on the main floor has a dining area (right) and a breakfast bar (left). It’s clean and simple exterior lines only hint at the beautiful interior

Day Trippin’: Albright-Knox

The Long Curve: 150 Years of Visionary Collecting at the Albright-Knox

The Gallery’s Collection is especially rich in post-war American and European art, acquired mostly through the generosity of its patron, the late Seymour H. Knox, Jr. Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, and art from the 1970s through the end of the century are well represented by exceptional works from Arshile Gorky, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Jasper Johns.

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery’s nearly 150-year tradition of collecting, conserving, and exhibiting the art of its time has given rise to one of the world’s most extraordinary art collections. Thomas Hoving, art historian and former director of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, said that “the Albright-Knox Art Gallery should be on everyone’s list to see, for it’s an overwhelming art experience. Small, intimate, and seductive, the museum has one of the most thumping modern and contemporary collections in the world.” The Gallery’s Collection is especially rich in post-war American and European art, acquired mostly through the generosity of its patron, the late Seymour H. Knox, Jr. Abstract Expressionism, Pop art, and art from the 1970s through the end of the century are well represented by exceptional works from Arshile Gorky, Jackson Pollock, Andy Warhol, and Jasper Johns. Likewise, Gallery visitors will find that the Collection offers a panorama of art through the centuries. Impressionism and post-Impressionism are well represented by leading nineteenth-century French

artists such as Paul Gauguin and Vincent van Gogh. Cubism, Surrealism, Constructivism, and other trends of the revolutionary twenties and thirties are documented by a large selection of significant works by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Henri Matisse, André Derain, Joan Miró, Piet Mondrian, Alexander Rodchenko, and others. In addition to this historical framework, the Gallery is committed to facilitating an ongoing and active acquisitions program that assures the Gallery’s Collection continues to represent the major new trends in contemporary art of the twenty-first century. In recent years, the Gallery has acquired major works by such artists as Matthew Barney, Mark Bradford, Tara Donovan, Teresita Fernandez, Liam Gillick, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Mona Hatoum, Jim Lambie, Catherine Opie, Jorge Pardo, Jennifer Steinkamp, and Philip Taaffe. These additions to the Collection assure that future generations will continue to benefit from experiencing an internationally based cross-section of modern and contemporary art. The Long Curve: 150 Years of Visionary Collecting at the

Albright-Knox Art Gallery will feature eighty iconic works by more than seventy-five artists from the late nineteenth century to the present, highlighting the history of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery’s extraordinary Collection, and the benefactors and museum professionals who made it possible. Founded in 1862 as The Buffalo Fine Arts Academy (now the governing body of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery), it is among the oldest arts organizations in America and one of the most celebrated for its long-standing commitment to collecting and exhibiting contemporary art. To complement and contextualize the exhibition, the Gallery will also present The Impermanent Collection: The Room of Contemporary Art, 1939-1971. This installation tells the story of the Room of Contemporary Art, an untried approach to collecting art through which the Gallery was able to acquire, through purchase or gift, many bold and fearless works of its timehelping to create a reputation for which the museum is still known today. For more information you can call 716-882-8700 or visit us at 1285 Elmwood Ave, Buffalo, NY 14222. Hours of Operations are 10am to 5pm.

CCB Beginning 110th Year January 2nd Will Mark CCB’s 110th Year in Operation

LITTLE VALLEY, NY – On January 2nd, 1902, a newly chartered Cattaraugus County Bank (CCB) opened its doors to the public and began an unbroken history of fiscal integrity and sound financial growth that has lasted for 110 years! CCB will begin it’s year-long 110th anniversary celebration in January in a couple of new and diverse ways: CCB reached out to local area schools and asked second grade teachers if they’d be interested in participating in a CCB Time Capsule Project. They’ve invited 2nd graders to place items in a CCB-provided time capsule in early 2012. The time capsule will then be placed in the bank’s vault. And in 2022 – when the 2nd graders are “senior” students, CCB will invite them back to CCB to open the time capsule to see how creative they were, how much fun they had and what may have been going on in their world at the beginning of 2012. CCB developed very attractive

and thought provoking display banners containing interesting history over CCB’s eleven decades of existence. All CCB locations will have a display in their lobby. The banners contain both CCB information and reminders of events in history outside the world of banking. The banners should be up and ready for viewing by midJanuary. CCB is also running a loan special between January 9th and February 29th, 2012. If a friend (customer or non-customer) is interested in learning more about CCB’s Anniversary Loan Special, they can call or stop in to any location and ask a loan officer for information. CCB has chosen the week of January 9th, 2012, to provide refreshments to anyone visiting one of their locations. “We are very happy to be able to say we’re here, we’re strong and we support our communities,” states CCB Senior VP Joni Simcick. “These first few activities are just the beginning

of a year-long birthday party. Many schools were receptive to our Time Capsule idea and we hope folks see our lenders about the loan special. It is quite a nice offer. We are also very proud of the big banner displays … I think visitors will find them interesting. I invite everyone to stop in, visit with our excellent employees and look for more events as 2012 passes. The CCB marketing team is busy talking about what else we’ll be doing to celebrate this important anniversary.” CCB is an FDIC insured New York State chartered independent, community bank. From January 2, 1902, CCB has established an unprecedented record of fiscal integrity and sound financial growth, which now totals $180 million in assets. CCB maintains convenient ATMs and can be found on the web at www.ccblv. com. CCB is an equal housing lender. CCB’s main office is located in Little Valley, with eight branch offices.

First Day Hike in Allegany First Day Hikes in Allegany State Park on January 1,2012

Start the year off on the right foot, the left foot, any foot – take a First Day Hike in Allegany State Park. First Day Hikes originated over 20 years ago at the Blue Hills Reservation, a state park in Milton, Massachusetts. The program was launched to promote both healthy lifestyles throughout the year and year round recreation at state parks. Many other states have offered outdoor recreation programs on New Year’s Day, however, this is the first time all 50 state park systems have joined together to sponsor First Day Hikes. America’s State Parks boast a

variety of beautiful settings for year-round outdoor recreation, and each First Day Hike will offer an opportunity to explore the unique natural and cultural treasures close to home. From California to Maine, hikers can climb hills and mountain tops, walk along ponds and beaches, and traverse trails through forests, fields and prairies. Visitors can listen to birds, breathe in the fresh air, discover wildlife tracks, feel the wind and the warmth of the sun or the coldness of the snow. Allegany State Park is offering a self-guided nature hike around Red House Lake from 9:00

AM to 3:00PM. Participants can come at their leisure. This is an easy hike for all ages. The 3 mile hike includes 10 nature/historical facts which participants will see as they make their way around the lake. Maps will be provided in the Administration Building with the 10 locations/points of interest noted. Allow one hour for the hike. Wear proper footwear as the roads may be snow covered or icy. Sheriff Timothy Whitcomb Awards Deputy Sherwood and Deputy Soderlund the Sheriff’s Office Meritorious Award. This prestigious award has been issued a total of eleven times since 1817.

Cattaraugus County Sheriff Timothy Whitcomb announces that the Cattaraugus County Sheriff’s Office recognized two of its Deputy Sheriffs. 25year veteran Deputy Sheriff Joseph Sherwood and 7-year veteran Jason Soderlund were both awarded the Sheriff’s Office Meritorious Award. This prestigious award has been issued a total of eleven times

in the history of the Sheriff’s Office which was established in 1817. Deputy Sherwood and Deputy Soderlund are the 12th and 13th recipients. On October 20, 2011, both Deputies responded to an incident in which a young man had taken a handgun to the Pioneer Central School District. Based on that tip, both Deputies acted quickly and

decisively-responding to the school, identifying the young man involved, locating him, and disarming him in short order. The stressors they faced that day were deemed above and beyond their normal call of duty, and their actions lead to an immediate perfect ending that resulted in no one being injured. Their actions that day qualify them for the Meritorious Award.

Pfeiffer Nature Center is home to more than 648 acres of nature’s bounty. Located in rural, southwestern New York State, you’ll find miles of open-access hiking trails, an historic American Chestnut log cabin, great birding areas, a picturesque pavilion available for rent, and so much more! The Nature Center has two beautiful properties to explore. The Lillibridge Property consists of 188 acres of forest and has a rustic American Chestnut log cabin listed in the National & State Registers of Historic Places. The front of the cabin offers a spectacular panoramic view of both nearby farms and distant mountaintops. A timber frame pavilion offers a covered shelter for picnics

and other events in the meadow. Perhaps the most notable and majestic feature of this property is the 20 acres of rare, oldgrowth forest. It includes large specimens of Eastern Hemlock, White Pine, Red and White Oak, American Beech, and more. Hikes on our six miles of marked foot-trails pass through a variety of forest ecotypes, such as coniferous and mixed deciduous forests.  Our terraces and slopes that rise 700 feet above the valley  hint at 350 million years of geologic history. The Nature Center also owns 460 acres on Yubadam Road, the Eshelman  Property, which has an active sugar bush, on-going scientific research projects, and a small farm.

There are three miles of trails through forests, meadows, transitional zones, and near ponds and wetlands. More trails are being developed. For those who want to learn more about the natural world, the Nature Center offers interpretive opportunities in science, nature, and art through programs, workshops and other events throughout the year, including our great Woods Walk & Trail Run every June. Get to know Pfeiffer Nature Center – find a spot in our woods to enjoy peace and quiet, come to our programs, become a member, volunteer, enter our film festival, or choose countless other ways to get involved. We hope to see you soon!

Continuing with Steve Horne’s presentation of Flower Essences: Remedies for Grief: Desire (Love):Just as our body contracts to push things away, it expands to let things in. When we “love” something, our blood vessels dilate to increase blood flow to the senses and skin. As a result our skin “glows,” our eyes “sparkle,” we are “warm” and open to embrace life. Desire allows us to say “yes” to what is pleasurable and good for us, both physically and emotionally. This same energy allows us to more efficiently digest nutrients, pull oxygen into the body and provide oxygen and nutrients to the cells. Healthy Grief: Grief is more than crying, it is sobbing, wailing, moaning, sighing and even screaming. These actions forcefully redistribute blood to the surface of our body so we can experience pleasure again. “Release it Remedy”: Helpful for people who are going through breakups, divorce or death of loved ones. Also helpful for people who are “victims,” who complain a lot, blaming others for their lack of success and problems. Helps people find comfort, let go of the past and have hope and confidence to face the future Its flowers are: Self-Heal – helps a person find their own inner strength and healing. LoveLies-Bleeding – for melancholy

and anguish of the soul, helps one find meaning and purpose in one’s suffering. Chicory – for possessive, needy, demanding love, helps transform it to selfless love, given freely. Bleeding Heart – teaches the lesson that love must exist in freedom, we can’t control what we love, helps a person “let go” after divorce, death or other losses. Chrysanthemum – for fear of mortality and aging, helps a person identify with their spiritual, rather than physical nature and accept the temporal (i.e., temporary) nature of the physical world. Borage – encourages hope and optimism. “Open Heart Remedy” : For people who are “hard of heart” because of unresolved wounds from childhood and previous relationships. Helps a person face their suppressed pain and grief and find healing. Helps them open up to love, warmth and vulnerability again. Increases compassion, empathy and trust in relationships. Some of the flowes in this remedy are: California Wild Rose – opens and comforts the heart, primary remedy for healing the heart. Baby Blue Eyes – helps with defensiveness, cynicism and lack of trust, helps one rediscover innocence, the ability to trust and receive love. Yerba Santa – internalized grief and sadness which causes constricted feelings in the chest, helps a person open up and acknowledge painful emotions, helps them “breathe freely” again. Evening Primrose – helps people who avoid commitment in relationships to commit to the process of love. Remedies for Fear:Fear is the energy we feel when choices need to be made, that have the possibility for great reward and/or great pain. Fear strongly affects the systems that regulate body functions, such as the glandular system (particularly the adrenals and thyroid) and the nerves. When this energy of fear is channeled into constructive action through exercising courage, it builds excitement and self-confidence. “Be Courageous Remedy”: For people who allow their fears to paralyze them in life and give

up control to authority figures instead of trusting their own judgment. Helps people make their own decisions. Helps with the development of courage to act in the face of fear and selfconfidence to pursue the goals and directions they desire in life. It has: Mountain Pride – helps a person confront and transform challenging situations. Aspen – for fears of the unknown, hidden fears and anxiety, promotes trust and confidence to meet the unknown. Scleranthus – hesitation and indecision, wavering between choices, promotes decisiveness and resolve. Mimulus – for facing known fears, promotes courage and self-confidence. Cerato – for people who are overly dependent on the advice of others, helps people to trust their own inner knowing. Blackberry – for the inability to translate goals into actions. “Be Respons-Able Remedy”: Helpful for people who get caught in addictive, obsessive or self-destructive behaviors. Helps them get in touch with the inner emotions that are driving their behavior. Promotes greater self-awareness and selfresponsibility. Helps a person be true to themselves and move their life in a more positive direction. These are some of the flowers in this combination: Milkweed – overcomes tendency to dull consciousness through alcohol, overeating and other addictions. California Poppy – helps those who chase glamour, fame and “glitter” to find the true “gold” in their heart. Agrimony – for people who hide their pain, fear and anxiety behind a mask of cheerfulness, promotes emotional honesty. OLEAN -- Woodland in the City (Woodland) and the Greater Olean Area Chamber of Commerce (GOACC) have teamed up again and created the 2012 Woodland in the City Squirrel Calendar. Last year, the calendar featured the local community in photos with the squirrels.   Woodland and GOACC looked for photos again this year.   The photos feature one of the Woodland Squirrels – a youngster dressed up like an elf and is with the Santa squirrel or a son dressed up like a knight and is with the Knight in Shining Armor squirrel!  Facts

and figures on the squirrels including their unique coloring, eating habits, origin of name and even the date of National Squirrel Appreciation Day are listed. Also, trivia on famous squirrels and even the Rally Squirrel from St. Louis are included. A map depicting locations of all squirrels is inside. The calendar, sold at the GOACC office, sells for $10.

In other squirrel news, GOACC has many squirrel items/memorabilia for sale.  A plush squirrel, a squirrel ornament, a squirrel dice game, the Woodland Squirrel book, and now the Woodland squirrel

bookmarks are for sale ranging in price from $1 - $6.00. Six of the Woodland in the City squirrels are featured in eight different bookmarks printed by Paper Factory in Olean.   The bookmarks are a $1 each, or six for $5.

The Olean Chamber regular hours are 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM Monday-Friday with special holiday weekday hours December 19-23 from 8 AM until 5:30 PM.   For more information on the squirrel retail items, please stop in GOACC at 120 North Union Street, Olean, or call 716/3724433.
