Ernest Hemingway once famously called Paris a “movable feast.” Well, he never made it to Ellicottville. Not many small towns - or cities for that matter - have such a profusion of great restaurants in so small an area. But, if “Papa” had made it to our town he surly would have felt at home in any of our local eateries. This weekend our local restaurants will be serving up what is literally a movable feast. The Village streets will be closed to autos, only to be taken over by folks looking for good food. And there will be plenty. The Villager has gathered the menu items that each participating restaurant will be sampling. Fire up your taste buds, and read on. (Article, page A 4-5). Story, John Thomas, Villager Staff

Centurion Cycling

Former NHL Hall of Famer Joins in E’Ville Aug. 17-19

Riders may choose from among the 100 mile, 50 mile, 25 mile, and 7 mile courses. The 100-mile course calls for some serious climbing, as it takes bicyclists over Chapel Hill Road near Humphrey.

Get ready to go pedaling with Pat. NHL Hall of Famer Pat LaFontaine, that is, who will join thousands of other bicycling enthusiasts for the Centurion in Ellicottville, the weekend of August 17th to the 19th. All levels of cyclists are welcome to take part, including racers and recreational riders. The popular former Buffalo Sabre has established LaFontaine’s Companions in Courage Foundation.

The Foundation aims to help hospitalized children with lifethreatening illnesses. They do this by building interactive playrooms in hospitals called “Lion’s Dens.” These playrooms help families and friends connect with the children during their stay in the hospital. LaFontaine says he is coming to Ellicottville to take See CYCLING page 8

EBC Reveals Expansion Plans

Kabob’s Kafe .... Pg B-2 Up and Running, After Up and Moving

In case you missed it, Kabob Kafe moved into the space behind its former location on Monroe Street in downtown Ellicottville. After all, it is not every day a two-story building is raised, moved and resettled. Regardless, this migrating EVL landmark is now open for business and dishing out some tasty eats. What can be considered a modern minor engineering marvel took less than four months to complete. While the outside of the building remains the same and the interior is certainly recognizable, some beneficial changes have been made.

Story and Photo by John Thomas, Staff Writer With all the changes happening downtown, the most significant would have to be the expansion of Ellicottville Brewing Company. The whole thing started when they moved Kabob Cafe to its new location behind Balloons. This new location gives Kabob Cafe exposure to Washington Street, which they had wanted for some time. The new empty space between EBC and Martha Street will allow the popular brewery to expand to the right of the current building

(as you face it) to the edge of Martha Street. This will allow the company to add 55 more seats to the restaurant section and create an entirely new brewery. According to Mike Nickolson, primary contractor on the remodel, it is going to be a multi-phase process. Currently the foundations for the new section are being poured. During the first phase the old building will be connected to the new building as it goes up. The new sections will be built in the popular Timberbuilt style. See EBC page 8

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - The Johnson family of Wilson will be getting a big check from Coffee Culture. The company is donating $20,000 to the family, who lost everything and 14-year-old daughter Sarah Johnson when their house exploded last week. Half of that money came from sales over the past week at its Buffalo and Ellicottville locations. Coffee Culture has decided to match that amount with a $10,000 donation of its own.

What a whirlwind few months it has been! At its inception, the Eddie Szpaicher Golf Classic was created as a way for Big Ed’s friends & family to pay homage to our fallen husband, father, colleague, and most importantly friend. We knew he left a void no one would be able to fill, but who knew what an impact the Big Man would have in his memory. We, the committee behind the Edmund Szpaicher Scholarship Fund can not even begin to express our heartfelt gratitude for the show of support from friends, family, and businesses near and far, who sought to honor Ed’s memory. We’re proud to say that with the generous donation

of this special community, that the scholarship fund has far exceeded our expectations, to help pave the way for (2) two outgoing Ellicottville Central School seniors, as they start their collegiate journey. Sen. Young Statement

Regarding I-86 Agreement Between Gov. Cuomo & Seneca Nation OLEAN – “People across the Southern Tier and the traveling public are jumping for joy at this news,” said Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I-Olean). “Fixing I-86 is a public safety and economic priority, and I commend Governor Cuomo and the Seneca Nation for working together to find a solution. Getting construction underway immediately will put people to work and alleviate

increasingly dangerous roadway conditions. The highway literally was breaking into pieces. We couldn’t be more thrilled that an agreement was reached,” said Senator Young. “This year, the State Senate successfully worked hard to correct a funding inequity that occurred when New York City representatives controlled the State Legislature in 20092010. At that time, those in the

majority diverted $167 million of our region’s road and bridge funding downstate. Now that we are back in charge, my Senate Majority changed the state budget this year to recoup our transportation dollars. It was disheartening to see the I-86 repaving languish because the funding was in place. Now those dollars will be put to great use as part of our region’s transportation plan,” said Senator Young.

At the chamber, Director Brian McFadden is pleased to do so, and would like to use the Centurion as a springboard to longer stays by visitors. Noting that most events currently go for two or three days, McFadden says, “What we want to do now instead of just concentrating on a weekend event is have events that translate into several months.” He says Ellicottville can become a bicycling center like Blue Mountain in Ontario, where people can come back to practice after an event, even those who did not race. “That’s the premise behind this event, to get people here for the weekend certainly for (this ride), but to show people that Ellicottville is a great place to ride.”

like magic with many of the local business’ that support this event with great donations. You are sure to find a great bargain. The Live Auction hosted by Bob McCarthy is fun as well as rewarding with Sabres & Bill Tickets and other great items. But the highlight of the party is the great food. The Chef’s from the best restaurants in town bring their signature dish for all to enjoy. This year’s Cajun theme will blow your palette away. When you arrive you are greeted with some great hors d’ oeuvres served by students from ECS. Hosted by John Harvard’s dinner will be served station style with all of the participating restaurants serving their best Southern cuisine for you to enjoy. A traditional “Crawfish Boil” will bring out the Cajun in all of us. Jambalaya, Seafood and Andouille Gumbo, Blackened Catfish, Chicken

difficult part of the remodeling. This fall a shell will be built around the existing kitchen. Nothing will happen in the new space until next Spring when the restaurant will shut down for a month to finish the expansion. At that point the existing kitchen walls will be removed and the

kitchen will expand into the new space. 2012 has been a year of exciting changes downtown. One of the most exciting of them will be the near doubling of the Ellicottville Brewing Company. They expect to have the renovation complete by the early Spring.

the plan calls for the town to purchase the land from the DOT and for Miranda to purchase the parcel from the town. But concern was raised about the possibly of the sale not going through. Currently the area is grass. Town Attorney Kathleen Moriarty pointed out, “either the state owns it and it’s grass, or Ray (Miranda) owns it and it’s grass” (or a planter). She also pointed out it is possible to grant a variance from the property line as “greater than zero.” This would give Miranda some leeway whether the sale goes through or not. If the sale did not go through the strip would remain in the states hands, but Miranda could do what it needs to up to the state’s property line. Town Planner Carol Horowitz pointed out that the state currently has an “excessive” right of way; 60 feet as measured

from the center of the road as opposed to the standard 33 feet. At this point a motion was made to close the public hearing. The chair asked if there was any comment from the public, but as there were no members of the public attending, there were no questions. Letters received from the Town Planning Board were entered into the record. The board entertained a motion to allow a variance that would allow the parking lot to have a 4 ft set back from the front property line instead of the usual 20 ft. The motion also called for the landscape buffer to have a depth of from 0 feet to 5 feet, where 20 ft is required. The chair read through the list of conditions that must be met to allow for the variances. The board felt that all the state’s conditions had been met, and the motion passed.

To solve a Sudoku puzzle, place a number into each box so that each row across, each column down, and each small 9-box square within the larger diagram (there are 9 of these) will contain every number from 1 through 9. In other words, no number will appear more than once in any row, column, or smaller 9-box square. Working with the numbers already given as a guide, complete each diagram with the missing numbers that will lead to the correct solution. Good luck!

Architectural Digest of Ellicottville Story and Photos By John Thomas Staff Writer Out past farmers fields, past uncut forest and just outside of Otto is a hand built home unlike any other. Set near over 100 acres of pristine forest, this is a home for those who want to re-connect with the land. The owners started construction on the home in 1978 when the property had no power or water. “We were pioneers!” Mrs. Evans tells with a bit of a laugh. They began by clearing about ten acres close to the road for their home One of the first outbuildings was a barn for the horses. Over the years they have added several substantial outbuildings including a machinery shed, garage, saw mill and guest

A Hand Built Wonder In A Forest Primeval

cottage. During the early 80’s they connected up to local power which allowed for pumping spring water to the home. The home they built is a marvel. Beautiful woodwork extends throughout; from the hand laid hardwood flooring to the low wainscoting in the living room and den. It came out of an old school in East Aurora. In the kitchen the wood cabinetry and the “antique” electric oven give a cabin feeling. The full basement remains dry due to the drainage tiles installed to keep water out. In the basement is the wood stove that is the primary heat for the house (assisted by electric baseboard heaters in all rooms). The wood shed is incorporated into the house and includes a ramp for moving the wood to the basement. The shed is as well built as the house and could be

used to expand the main section. The home was built to be energy efficient with seven inch thick insulated walls. Upstairs are four bedrooms including the master and a full bath. Along the front of the house is a windowed closed in porch that faces the forest view. It can be used any time of the year. For summer relaxing there is an open deck as well with an elevated hot tub protected by a gazebo. But, no story about the house would be complete without mentioning the nearly 100 acres of beautiful forest that extends for a mile from the house. Through it are over six miles of ATV trails that can be used for snowmobiles or cross country skiing in the winter. Further back is a yearround stream that crosses the property. The forest is thick with maple, cherry, ash, beech,

hemlock, aspen, cucumber, oak, tulip poplar and basswood. Just about every species of Western New York tree. It’s a forest primeval, right in your front yard. Still, for all it’s “off the grid” sense of remoteness, the

home is only twenty minutes from Ellicottville with its skiing, golf, fine dining and shops. For more information about this home contact Larry Oeffling at Ellicottville Real Estate. 716699-6748

(Pictures from left to right) 1. The front of the home has a windowed enclosed porch, and an open porch on the left. To the right you can see the deck and hot tub. 2. The covered hot tub is a great place to relax and enjoy the forest view.

(Pictures from left to right) 1. Living: The hardwood flooring extends into the kitchen. The wainscoting on the right used to be in a school in East Aurora. 2. The beautiful wood cabinets and hard wood flooring give this modern kitchen a cabin feel. 3. The kitchen includes an old-fashioned looking oven. But the lower door covers modern electric controls. Behind cupboard doors there is a modern dish washer. 4. Beautiful gardens surround the home and lead out to the forest. Mrs Evans wanted “no straight lines” when laying out the garden path.

Up Close & Personal

Kabobs Kafe: Up and Running After Up and Moving By: Paul Royer In case you missed it, Kabob Kafe moved into the space behind it’s former location on Monroe Street in downtown Ellicottville. After all, it is not every day a two-story building is raised, moved and resettled. Regardless, this migrating EVL landmark is now open for business and dishing out some tasty eats. What can be considered a modern minor engineering marvel took less than four months to complete. While the outside of the building remains the same and the interior is certainly recognizable, some

beneficial changes have been made. There is now a full bar downstairs that offers seating in a well-lit and pleasant atmosphere, there is additional outdoor seating both upstairs and down, and more room for patrons and servers in general. What is also immediately apparent is the ample parking lot and landscaped entrance way. The restaurant’s proprietor, Icky Iqbal, is well known in the community, as he has been living and working here for over seven years. He is a fan of the new location and is quick to espouse the advantages. The menu at the Kabob Kafe

draws on flavors from India and the Mediterranean and provides a unique flair to the local cuisine. While many of the favorite dishes on the menu are still there, Mr. Iqbal continues to offer new daily specials of culinary artistry. This upcoming weekend is the Taste of Ellicottville and would be a great time to check out the new location of the old digs. Mr. Iqbal promises to have a booth out on Washington Street and the Kabob Kafe will be open for lunch and dinner. Its new address is 37 Washington Street and they can be reached at (716) 699-2599.
