Architectural Digest of Ellicottville Downtown Country Charm
Built in 1928 the house at 20 West Washington Street comes from an era when budgets and dwindling raw materials had less of an impact on design and construction. Originally built as two apartments, over the years its owners removed the apartment divisions and enlarged some of the rooms to turn it into a single unit home. Even after an update a few years ago the home has managed to hang onto much of its original charm; beautiful woodwork abounds throughout the house, from the wainscoting in the living and dining rooms, to the floors and ceilings in the kitchen. It’s in the kitchen where the wood really stands out. In the living room a massive stone fireplace commands the corner. The wood-burning fireplace seems almost big enough to park a car in. The stone hearth and wood mantle complete the look.
STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOHN THOMAS Those of you who read this column regularly know that I tend to prefer old houses to new ones. Modern houses have lots of advantages, but they never seem to have quite the character of an older home. Built in 1928 the house at 20 West Washington Street comes from an era when budgets and dwindling raw materials had
less of an impact on design and construction. Originally built as two apartments, over the years its owners removed the apartment divisions and enlarged some of the rooms to turn it into a single unit home. Even after an update a few years ago the home has managed to hang onto much of its original charm; beautiful woodwork abounds throughout the house, from the wainscoting in the living and dining rooms, to the
floors and ceilings in the kitchen. It’s in the kitchen where the wood really stands out. The hardwood flooring blends with the oak cabinets, walls and ceiling. It creates a warm environment, and with the gas fired stove/range combination; it is a cooks delight. The red Formica counters ring the kitchen, provide a spot for the double sink, and make up the breakfast bar at the far end. On the other wall is a built-in oven and above it a microwave. There
is a refrigerator at the far end, and out in the hallway a second fridge for drinks. In the center of the kitchen is low wood table; the perfect height for kneading bread dough. Just off the kitchen is a downstairs bedroom with a teak lined shower. On the far side of the breakfast bar is a generous dining room. At the far end bay windows flood the room with morning sunlight. room table. Here, and in the living room is the traditional wainscoting and chair rail, which provide that touch of antique elegance. It’s a room that could easily play host to formal candlelight dinners or casual après ski entertaining. Over in the living room a massive stone fireplace commands the corner. The wood-burning fireplace seems almost big enough to park a car in. The stone hearth and wood mantle complete the
look. The big screen TV is neatly placed in the corner so you can enjoy the fireplace while you watch Jeopardy. Just off the fireplace a pop-out windowed alcove is the perfect spot to curl up with a good book. One old style feature this house has preserved is a formal entryway. The front door is just off the street and in the entry are coat hooks and hangers to let your SEE HOME PAGE B-4

Inside Business: Watson’s The Food Network will Feature WNY’s Very Own Chocolate this Monday BY MEAGHAN O’ROURKE ST. BONAVENTURE UNIVERSITY Picture this: a child’s sparkling, wide-eyes with a touch of desire staring at the mouthwatering treats sitting in the window of a candy shop and when the child enters the candy shop they want something of everything because it looks so delicious. It might be a tad clichéd but it is still a classic example of a kid in a candy store. Watson’s Chocolates has been creating delicious treats for Western New York and the rest of the world since 1946. On Monday, Feb. 21 at 8:30 p.m. it will be recognized for its worldrenowned sponge candy on the Food Network’s 6-show series, “Kid in a Candy Store.” The show’s host, Adam Gertler, will be the child with wide, sparkling eyes with a hint of desire as the show gets up close and personal with the sponge candy making process. The Food Network approached Watson’s about appearing on the show and ultimately chose Watson’s, out of hundreds of companies, to appear on Monday’s show. “We have a very good customer who lives in Los Angeles and is an accountant for the company that produces the show,” said Whitney Watson Beecher, president of Watson’s Chocolates. “She heard that they wanted to do sponge candy (on the show) and being from western New York she said ‘Oh, I know a place you should check out.’After a lot of back-and-forth interviews, pictures, discussing the history (of Watson’s) … how we make the candy and our production facility, they chose us.” The taping, which included about 20 hours worth of footage,

Three generations of Watsons oversee the daily operation of Watson’s Chocolates to ensure that their customers receive the same or better quality that has become the trademark of Watson’s Chocolates since their humble beginning in 1946. Pictured above, Watson’s original Restaurant and Soda Fountain on Delaware Avenue, c. 1946. was taken on the weekend of Dec. 4 and 5, Beecher said. “They spent all day Saturday at our plant on Ensminger Road in Tonawanda and on Sunday they came to our East Amherst store to do customer interviews and stuff like that.” Beecher said the focus was on the sponge candy and the process it takes to make it but they also included a cinnamon bark. She was not sure exactly what would air in the episode. Watson’s is a third-generation, family-owned business. The first shop opened in 1946 on Delaware Avenue in Kenmore. The Ellicottville shop, which opened in 1985, is the company’s second oldest store, said Watson. In addition to Kenmore and Ellicottville, Watson’s has six other locations in Pittsford, Buffalo, Orchard Park, Lancaster, Niagara Falls and East Amherst. The company’s international market includes Japan, Brazil, Spain, Germany, England and Romania.
In 65 years Watson’s has developed a loyal customer base and prominent brand. “A lot of the stuff that they sell here is exactly the same (from when they began),” said Barb Toth, manager at Watson’s Ellicottville store. “It is really good so there is really no need to change it. People come back year-after-year for the same thing: turtles, pretzels, creams and sponge candy.” We welcome everybody: skiers, out-of-towners, our locals, oncethrough-town people … there’s sweets for everybody,” said Toth. The Ellicottville location is open Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. – 9 p.m., and 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Sundays. Stop by and check out the Ellicottville shop at 27 Washington St. or call it at 716-699-2805. Ellicottville Business Dev. Chamber of Commerce Monthly Meeting Focuses On Web Presence
The Chamber of Commerce held a Business Development meeting for the community of Ellicottville last Thursday, Feb. 10th, 2011 at 9 am. Business owners and representatives from the community were in attendance and the meeting was led by Ellicottville Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Brian McFadden, Heather Snyder Administrative Coordinator and Kelly Friel, Membership Coordinator. The meeting began with a welcome from the chamber to all in attendance and was immediately followed by a brief introduction from all community business owners in the room. Heather thanked the group for such a great attendance. McFadden decided to begin the meeting by bringing three web links to the projection screen in the front of the room. Each link was to a different publication that had written about Ellicottville through releases issued by the Chamber’s PR Company. He navigated through the links, in order to show the many forms of recognition Ellicottville is receiving in many different parts of the web. The community’s visibility on the web has always been a focal point of
the chamber as there is so much information out there on the internet. McFadden stated that Ellicottville needed to find a way to, “fight through the clutter.” Lately, our lovely home of Ellicottville has done just that. Through the use of blog sites, Ellicottville has been able to link press releases to some serious web media machines. The biggest name of the three would be none other than the home site of “The New Yorker” publication. Recently, Ellicottville was featured on this site in a press release advertising Ellicottville as an outstanding après ski destination to its 7.2 million online readers. Another release featured the fantastic deals that can be found here for “weekday ski packages.” In addition to the information found in the article, the Chamber is able to put a window linking directly to their website below the article that allows users to dip right into all Ellicottville has to offer. McFadden continued, “We don’t have a problem bringing newcomers in every weekend, and now we’re figuring out more ways to bring them back weekdays. We want them to stay here and enjoy all we offer.” McFadden then shifted to
the Spring, Summer and Fall Seasons for Ellicottville. He spoke of Ellicottville’s recent recognition as one of National Geographic’s top 100 adventure communities in North America. He urged all community members in attendance to continue to treat our visitors with the same great respect and to give them the same great service they have received here in year’s past because Ellicottville is “growing as a year-round attraction.” Heather presented the social media side of the Chamber’s promotion activities including their new Facebook Fan Page. She went on to discuss the blog as well. These two vehicles can be used by members to keep our visitors informed of what’s going on in the village. She urged everyone to submit stories to her. The meeting also included a brief discussion of the Ellicottville gift cards by Kelly and the role they have played in bringing visitors to the area. The two largest purchasers of the cards in the past months are the Seneca Allegany Casino and Allegany Mountain Resort. The meeting was adjourned at approximately 10:00 am.

guests doff their coats. I head up the beautiful wood staircase to the second story. At the top of the stairs I remember something a contractor friend said to me years ago. “If you want to check out the quality of a homes construction, shake the banister.” I grab the railing at the top of the stairwell and try to shake it. It doesn’t budge. This home is built like a fortress. At about the same time I realize something else I noticed about this home. Even though it’s situated on a busy main street, inside the house I can barely hear any traffic outside. The sense of quiet privacy is palpable. Just off the second floor landing is the master bedroom. It’s spacious, light filled and lined with large windows along three walls. At one end is another widowed alcove, perfect for a love seat, a cup of coffee, and the morning paper. The main body of windows face north, which will help keep the room cool in summer. The master bath features another teak lined shower. Down the hall is a feature no ski country home should be without: a giant hot tub. The area not only houses the hot tub, but off it are two bedrooms and a loft. The knotty pine walls and stone tile flooring around the tub set a tone of rustic relaxation. Just off the hot tub area is a full bath with a very cool antique tub and old style, pull chain flush toilet. Up on the third floor is the kid’s dorm room. It has a half bath and enough room to sleep a passel of kids. Totally the home has enough sleeping area for a pile of friends and family. Now that the Village has grown, this home finds itself just a few yards from downtown, and scants minutes to HoliMont and Holiday Valley. Although this home is close to a century old its been beautifully updated to ease into the modern world, and still maintains much of its original country charm. It’s enough to make a modern home jealous. For information contact Team Pritchard at ERA Vacation Properties. Cathy: 716-9834234, Melanie: 716-480-8409.
