An unmarked gravel driveway was the only break in the forest, and as I turned up it, not knowing what to expect, I found the driveway to end in the parking area for the house; and a splendid house it is. It backs up to the forest I had just come through and in front the view is scenic flat land.

Take a step back in time to the days of homemade apple cider, freshly baked pies and homegrown pumpkins brought right to you in Great Valley, NY. Pumpkinville, open since the late 1960’s, has been bringing clean, family fun to people all over western New York and beyond. “I think we give them (people) a chance to come to the country and just be able to relax … and unwind a little bit and see how things grow,” owner Dan Pawlowski said. Pumpkinville not only provides people a place to come and pick out a pumpkin, but a place where families can spend time outdoors in activities especially suited for the fall. Kids of all ages, including adults, can enjoy hayrides, cow trains, corn mazes, corn canon, a duck derby, a petting zoo and much more! For those who love fall foods will love what Pumpkinville offers up. People can enjoy freshly made apple cider, pumpkin and apple pies and all the different foods offered to people at the BBQ shack and four-year-old bakery. However, what Pumpkinville may be most famous for is its pumpkin donuts. “We’ve had to double our capacity this year,” Pawlowski said. “Last year we had a hard time keeping up.” This year, the Pawlowski’s have added more homemade items to their delectable menu. The Pawlowski’s 1875 cider mill and farm gives people a glimpse to what used to be. “You can see it (cider) made on one end and get it on the other end,” Pawlowski said. “You can walk right out here in the field to see how they are growing right on the vine… get people close to
the earth, see the farm animals.” Adding to the rustic feel, the Pawlowski’s also sell different types of crafts, especially those related to harvest and fall season, at the Boo-tique. “We’re really more about the farm and family entertainment,” Pawlowski said. “We’re more in the business of fall harvest and not Halloween, but we do have a little spooky house.” Pumpkinville has no admission, but rides and other activities are $3.50 per ticket or three for $10. Pumpkinville opened September 17 and runs until Halloween, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. rain or shine. Dogs are even allowed to join the fun if they are well mannered and on a leash. If you’re in town this weekend, you are surely celebrating something; the best and busiest weekend of the year, a long weekend getaway, and of course-- Canadian Thanksgiving! As I write this, I am very aware of another annual Fall event—Rosh Hashanah—the Jewish New Year. Not raised in the Jewish faith, my knowledge of holidays has been limited. Thanks to a recent invitation to visit the Holy Land, I will no longer let this time of year pass without reflection or remembrance of my amazing experience. After a 12 hour flight and 7 hour time difference, we arrived in the early afternoon and hit the ground running. Our guide for the week was Shrawaga—who we affectionately called Shrek— as he reminded us of the Ogre character whose determined mission (accomplished) was to lead us over every inch of Israel and learn thousands of years of history. We ended up with a very rich cultural, culinary, religious, political, and historical journey that left all us changed in some way, and much more appreciative of the trials and tragedies of this powerful state. While this part of the world can be volatile, Christians, Jews, and Muslims have lived side by side for millennia, and some initial concerns for visiting this area were put to rest. We felt very safe and welcome by everyone

Each day of our week was packed with places to visit that we’ve heard about all our lives….the Western Wall (Wailing Wall), King David’s Tomb, Bethlehem, Old City of Jerusalem, Jewish, Christian, and Muslim quarters. A walk down Mt. Olive to the Garden of Gethsemane, and the path of the Stations of the Cross. Two different sites are believed to be the actual sites of the crucifixion and burial of Jesus Christ, so based on faith and scripture, you can explore both. We traveled to Nazareth, Cana, and spent a respite afternoon on a traditional fishing boat on the Sea of Galilee. As we boarded the boat, the crew raised an American flag along with the Israeli flag that brought more than goose bumps to our American group. The Dead Sea gave us an opportunity to take a welcome, cooling dip, bob around in unsinkable water, and smear the famous mud on ourselves and each other. After rinsing off the mud
and salty water, we all felt ready to make an infomercial for soft and smooth skin. A highlight for 2 of our members was a baptism in the River Jordan—a lovely, narrow, shaded river---and we waded into the river to collect water to bring home. On our last day, we visited the Holocaust Museum and Golgotha—“The Skull” and the second location believed to be the actual site of the crucifixion and burial of Jesus Christ. Based on scripture and archeological findings, this got my “vote” and was a moving way to wind down our journey. Our hosts provided bountiful, delicious, and healthy Middle Eastern food. While I definitely had my fill of hummus and pita to last through next year, the hookah pipe we indulged in after lunches (apple tobacco!) will be remembered with a smile.
