Architectural Digest of Ellicottville Something For Everyone

At the top of Krager Hill is one house that is adept at supporting our inner skier, hunter, mountain biker, ATV’er, chef, nature lover, framer, snowmobiler, hiker, woodworker, and gardener. Whatever your interests are - indoors or out, winter or summer - this house can accommodate them. Nestled on nearly 80 acres, this is a home to let you spread out and do the things you love to do. And as spectacular as the outside of the house is, the inside is equally so. High open beamed ceilings create a space that reminds me of a basketball court. It’s big. The living area cozies up to the river rock woodburning fireplace. Close enough to the fireplace to catch its warmth is the dining area. It also shares the view out the windows.

STORY AND PHOTOS BY JOHN THOMAS We Americans are a dynamic lot. But how many of us live in houses that really embrace our myriad activities? At the top of Krager Hill is one house that is adept at supporting our inner skier, hunter, mountain biker, ATV’er, chef, nature lover, framer, snowmobiler, hiker, woodworker, and gardener. Whatever your

interests are - indoors or out, winter or summer - this house can accommodate them. Nestled on nearly 80 acres half cleared and half hardwood - this is a home to let you spread out and do the things you love to do. Alpine skiing lovers will appreciate the fact that it’s only a few minutes from HoliMont and Holiday Valley, and cross country lovers have a great area right in their backyard. Snowmobiles and

ATVs can head right out from the three-car garage to the many trails in the area. The cleared land is stump-free and suitable for a bit of farming, or a massive garden. Below the house is a pond big enough for a small boat or winter ice skating. A family of ducks plies the water. And for those of you who like your activities a bit more quiescent, you can just sprawl out on the huge deck and enjoy the spectacular

view down to Cattaraugus and over to the distant mountains. As spectacular as the outside of the house is, the inside is equally so. Passing through the stained glass front doors to the two-story entrance hall, I get my first hint of the innovative layout. The wall opposite the front door creates a division between the entrance and the great room, and as I walk around it, I realize it’s also the back wall for the kitchen. The

great room opens up in front of me. Across it I first see the two story windows that frame the view from the deck, and bring the outside into the equally large interior. I start with the gourmet kitchen. An island counter establishes the boundary for the kitchen and holds a double sink, dishwasher, and trash compactor. The far side of the counter serves as the breakfast bar. The back wall

of the kitchen has a propane fired four-burner stove. The Corian countertops and tile backsplash blend beautifully with the cherry wood cabinets and floors. On the left wall is an SUV sized refrigerator, coffee nook, and two convection ovens. The right wall features an over-sized double door pantry, wet bar, and wine rack. I can see any

Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course Redefines WNY Golf Landscape LEWISTON, NY - Western New York has a new destination that the golfing public is sure to notice. Representatives from the Seneca Nation of Indians, Seneca Gaming Corporation and the Town of Lewiston joined together earlier this week to celebrate the ceremonial opening of Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course, a $25 million public golf course that will officially open for play on July 2. The challenging par-72 layout was designed by renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Jr. “Today is the dawning of a new era in golf in Western New York and the start of an exciting new venture for Seneca Gaming Corporation,” said Kevin W. Seneca, Chairman, Seneca Gaming Corporation, during Monday’s ceremony. “Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course will certainly add to the world-class environment that visitors to our Four Diamond-rated Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel resort currently enjoy and provide travelers another reason to visit Lewiston, the Greater Niagara

Region and Western New York.” Located on 257 acres of land, Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course features a magnificent layout with significant water features, five sets of tees on every hole and pristine grounds which golfers of every skill will enjoy and appreciate. Among its unique design features are strategically placed bunkers surrounded by tall heather and a double green for the 9th and 18th holes, a layout more commonly found in Europe than in North America. “This is truly a people’s golf course,” said Bruce Charlton, president and chief design officer of RTJ2 Golf Course Architects, who was on hand for the opening. “From its public nature to its fair yet challenging layout, Seneca Hickory Stick presents what every golfer is looking for – a memorable golf experience that you will appreciate and want to enjoy more than once.” In addition to its significance for Western New York, the project is also an historic achievement for the Seneca Nation of Indians, marking the Nation’s first off-

territory development project. “The influence of the Seneca Nation of Indians can be seen throughout Western New York, far beyond the borders of our current territories,” said Seneca Nation President Barry E. Snyder, Sr. “Our businesses employ thousands of people from across the region and we do business with many local companies. Our casinos and resorts attract millions of visitors every year. Today, we celebrate the next step in our Nation’s journey and look forward to a long and successful endeavor here in Lewiston.” Seneca Hickory Stick Golf Course is being managed by KemperSports, one of the world’s leading golf management and development companies, which manages an extensive portfolio of upscale clubs in 28 states, Puerto Rico and Central America. The general manager and golf pro at Seneca Hickory Stick is Fran Roach, while Gerry Doolittle is the course superintendent. For course information and tee times, call 716-754-2424 or visit

You may be wondering if going away is worth all the fuss beforehand, and sometimes in the middle of all the last minute rushing around, it can seem easy to think that! The key is to check these things off as early as possible and save the last days to happily counting down the days before you head off to your adventure.

BY FELICIA Z. LIVINGSTON Happy Fourth of July and welcome to Ellicottville with lots of fun activities to enjoy here in town! If you’ve driven 2 hours or 2 days to get here, it’s safe to assume that you didn’t leave home without taking care of a few details. With the busiest weeks of family travel just picking up speed, it never hurts to be reminded of how to prepare for time away, whether you will be sailing the high seas or cruising down Highway #1 in your RV. You may already put these things into practice. If not, hopefully you can add them to your “to do” list. If you have pets, be sure to arrange for pet care as soon as

you make your travel plans. Call the kennel or home service to ensure your pet is accounted for and looked after for the entire duration of your trip so you know Fido will be safe and happy. If the youngster next door is asked to be in charge, be sure their family plans have not changed without you knowing about it. Kennels fill up quickly, so calling months in advance is not unheard of, especially if you are traveling over a holiday. Airlines have no sympathy if you need to change your flights because there is no room at the kennel. With at least a week’s notice, put a stop on regular deliveries. This includes services such as newspapers, mail, UPS, housecleaners, and pre-pay your lawn service.

Tips for Smooth Sailing ... On Land or On Water Visit your bank to have enough cash on hand and if traveling domestically, do a search for branches of your bank if possible, saving you ATM fees or other banks’ fees. Travelers Checks are becoming a thing of the past - few places even accept them and they are not as easy to replace as the commercial says. If you are traveling overseas, purchase the currency you will need for each country at least the equivalent of $50 to get started. Do this a few weeks before you leave, as it may take several days for this exchange. Choose the amount you convert with care, as each time you convert, the bank keeps a percentage of it. Alert your credit card company of your travel plans. A new pattern of activity on your card could be interpreted as fraud and your account could be locked. Always take at least one or two back-up cards. Prior to leaving home, make color copies of the front and backs of the cards and keep these in a different area of your belongings. If you become separated from your cards, you’ll still have those 800 numbers with you to make inquiries if necessary. While you are at the copier and your travels require you to bring your passport, make two color copies of it. Leave one at home, take the other with you and keep it in a separate SEE CRUISE PAGE B-5

Have you ever tried to grab a fist full of sand and hold it? The harder you try to grasp it the more sand you lose through your fingertips. Holding onto sand seems impossible; it just keeps slipping away. However, if you cup your hands together, you can gently cradle the sand, losing almost nothing. Consider cupping gently the joys and challenges in life rather than trying desperately to hold onto them. Life’s journey will follow a twisting turning path if we allow it to be. Each twist and

turn inspires anticipation and wonder about what is around the next corner. Many of us try to control and predict what is about to come, hoping and wishing for something great and magnificent. Sometimes we are greeted with such wonderful moments, happy endings, and dreams come true. Other times we are left feeling disappointed, emotionally charged, and bewildered. Whatever greets you around the next turn of your life’s journey, embrace it gently. Cup it in your hands; do not hold on so tight that it causes you to lose the experience, memory, or lesson life has to offer despite your greatest efforts. I have often found myself desperately trying to hold onto moments in life, grasping them tightly only to find that they just keep slipping through my fingertips. I am referring to meaningful events in life, relationships, behaviors, and values and beliefs. Rather than fighting to keep what we believe we do not want to lose by grasping it tightly, we should instead gently cup the event in our hands, holding on only as long as we need to and then let

go. Life offers greatness, challenges, heartache, and happiness, each giving us something to define further our unique character as individuals. Know that each offering will come and go, allowing space for the next opportunity, memory, or chance at greatness. Do not grasp life’s offerings tightly hoping that nothing will change, that the moment will last forever. Instead, cup it gently, experiencing it for what it is in the moment and then let it be what it will be in the grand scheme of life. Change, transitions, and transformations are inevitable. Everything in life will change with time. Allow life’s offerings to come and go freely, experience them for the moment, learn from the lessons they teach and let them go. Life’s journey is a twisting turning path that can be an adventure if we allow ourselves the flexibility and freedom to experience what it has to offer, both good and bad. Questions? Comments? It always amazes me to hear children needing encouragement to go outside and play especially during summer! How do we get kids to become more physically active when school’s out for summer? Let’s look at some strategies. Research indicates that children aren’t getting enough exercise. The National Network for Child Care states that almost half of America’s kids are lacking in physical activity. Overweight children are even less likely to engage in fitness, which easily results in obesity. And this lack of exercise also exists at the preschool level. Emphasis in the formative years tends to fall on language development, social and artistic/ fine motor skill development, rather than large motor skills. Movement, therefore, tends to

be casual, instead of structured and moderately/highly intense. Consequently, for many kids, their gross motor activities, such as running, jumping, hopping, climbing, sliding, long striding/ stepping, etc., tend to be less practiced and for too short a time length. How much exercise is recommended for kids aged 2 years and older? The American Heart Association strongly encourages a minimum of 30 minutes/day at a moderate intensity level. In addition, kids should engage in exercise at a vigorous/high intensity level 3-4 times/week for 30 minutes/ session. The AHA stresses that this can be divided up into two 15-minute sessions/day, if necessary. Stats show that inactive kids become inactive adults. If we instill healthy lifestyle habits in our kids at an early age, they will maintain them throughout their lives. How can we motivate our children to be more active? • Limit their time spent on sedentary activities (computer, TV, video and quiet time). • Be an example. If your kids see you being active, making healthy nutrition and lifestyle choices, they may too. Kids are impressionable and copy what they see. If you and your child can participate in a fun, fitness activity together, all the better! If the activity is your child’s

choice, he/she will enjoy it more. Never present physical activity as a chore or punishment. • Start slowly and keep it simple. Like adults, kids need time to adjust to anything new. Keep all expectations realistic. • Avoid sibling rivalry. Instead, stress individual strengths towards different physical activities. • Praise your child for his/her efforts. Positive feedback is very powerful, encouraging and builds self-esteem. • Never reward with junk food! This defeats your child’s efforts and sends out mixed messages. With these strategies, we can hopefully help our children to make fitness a more active role during their summer vacation and for the rest of the year, as well! Turning to the rest of the room, the high open beamed ceiling runs the full length of the room, creating a space that reminds me of a basketball court. It’s big. The living area cozies up to the river rock woodburning fireplace. It’s a perfect place for relaxing on those long winter nights. Close enough to the fireplace to catch its warmth is the dining area. It also shares the view out the windows. A beautiful modern Tiffany chandler hangs over the table. Moving into the master bedroom, the size and scope of the house continues. Have a list of American Embassies and Consulates for the countries you plan to visit, and know the approximate location in reference to where your hotel is. If your cell phone service does not include an international plan, inquire about this. Or, you can rent an international phone for a few weeks, or purchase international phone cards as you go form the vendors that sell magazines and newspapers. Our Star Spangled Banner of Properties

Moving into the master bedroom, the size and scope of the house continues. The high ceiling creates a sense of grandeur, while the gas fireplace adds warmth. The river rock chimney echoes the fireplace in the living room. The master bath features a shower and Jacuzzi tub, his and hers sinks, and a generous walk-in closet. On the opposite side of the living room are two more bedrooms and a full bath.

center is here, as well as plenty of room for setting up pool, foosball, and ping pong tables. There is a full bath to accommodate the bunk room, currently set up for sleeping six kids. Just off the family room is a larger bedroom for the teenage princess who just has to get away by herself. Here also is a fully equipped mancave shop for the woodworker,

or DIYer, or when Dad just has to get away by himself. In short, this is a home that doesn’t stop; a home that allows anyone to be all they are and bring on all they love to do. A home in which you can spread out and truly live. For more information on this house contact Wendy O’Neil at Holiday Valley Realty Co., 716-699-3954.

scenic Route 6 and Route 219, can accommodate camper units of any size with 50 pull-through sites. The camper even has a choice whether to bask in the sun or chill out in the shade. There are also more than 160 water/electric sites available – some even include cable. Cabins are also available for rent. The campground also hosts a variety of events throughout the summer, including a vendor and craft weekend on Aug. 7. From 10am-4pm, vendors will sell handmade products such as baked goods and wood products. For more information, log onto The Bettum’s Idlewood Family Campground, located along Route 219 in Lewis Run, allows you to camp in a tent or in a cabin. Fishing is available nearby. The campground also allows pets, has a swimming pool, pavilion, picnic tables, a basketball court plus Bingo and game room. The owners have recently updated the bathrooms and laundry mat. There’s also a general store and propane filling station. Campground events include the Sixth Annual Tag Sale will

be held from 9am-3pm at the campground. To find out more about Bettum’s campground, go to Along Route 6, traveling east from the Allegheny National Forest, the Allegheny River Campground offers RV and tent camping along the Allegheny River in Roulette. This campground can be your home away from home with electric, water and sewer hookups. There are also a recreation hall, cabins, planned activities, modern restroom, laundry facilities, picnic tables and fire rings and a playground. And don’t forget the stocked river fishing. You will be hooked. There are also kayak and tube rentals for more adventures in the Allegheny River. For more information, go to www. you will be there, if possible. Unseasonal cold, heat, or rain could render you unhappy and unprepared, so adjust accordingly. Have plenty of batteries on hand if your camera requires them versus a charger, and of course don’t forget the chargers for each item you bring with you. A power strip keeps everything humming as you charge multiple electronic toys. Notify your home security company if you’ll be away for an extended time - be sure they have your cell or international phone number. Leave all contact info with neighbors or family. Set timers for lights and unplug all appliances that simply waste electricity by just being plugged in - such as VCRs, coffee pots, and clocks. In addition to having a few lights on timers, a TV on a timer gives more of an

appearance of someone being home in the evenings. You may be wondering if going away is worth all the fuss beforehand, and sometimes in the middle of all the last minute rushing around, it can seem easy to think that! The key is to check these things off as early as possible and save the last days to happily counting down the days before you head off to your adventure. Then, the answer to that question will be an absolute “yessss!” Maybe these tips are what you already do to prepare to go away. This is a good thing! Others may sound like just common sense, but some of these I learned the hard way, which is why they are on my “must do” list for evermore! Stay tuned for a review of my recent cruise on the Celebrity Solstice and an upcoming cruise to the British Isles! Have a safe and happy holiday!
