Philips Garden Time

IT’S NOT ALL GLOOM! The media is just full of economic gloom at the moment. Everyone is rightly concerned about the rising cost of food, gas, electricity, petrol, diesel and all the knock-on effects that this will have. We are all having to ‘tighten our belts’, looking to economise where we can and cutting back on foreign holidays, days out and a host of other luxuries that many of us have become used to during the so-called ‘good times’. Now all this means that we are spending a little more time at home, but we still need something to do for enjoyment and relaxation. I know I am bias, but an extra hour or two spent in the garden each week can be good for both mind and body. If you have enough space, or are lucky enough to get an allotment, then you can join the many thousands of people who have already started to grow their own fruit and vegetables.

There is enormous satisfaction to be had in bringing your home grown produce to the kitchen. You know it is fresh, it will be full of flavour and if you wish, it can be grown organically. Some quick crops, especially salads, can be sown now for autumn harvesting, but if the ground needs some serious preparation, it is best to start now ready for autumn planting of soft fruit and overwintering vegetables, and clearing areas for cropping next year. Good soil preparation is really important. All perennial weeds, brambles and old bushes need to be removed, and the soil dug over really well, incorporating some organic matter where necessary. Some old-fashioned double digging is great exercise as long as you don’t overdo it and it is so much more productive than spending hours in the gym. You will not always save lots of money on every crop. Seeds and fertilisers will cost something, but there are certain crops which can pay handsomely. Runner beans, onions, leeks, parsnips, sprouts can all crop heavily, and you can also grow your own soft fruit which costs very little once the initial investment to buy plants and bushes has been made. This is something that the whole family can do together, and children really love to get involved, especially if you grow something they really like such as a bed of strawberries. Although England is known worldwide as a nation of gardeners, I do see quite a few gardens that could do with more care and attention. Sometimes these gardens belong to elderly people who loved to garden when they were younger, but now find it hard to do. If you do find yourself with time to spare, is there anyone locally who could do with some help? It is surprising what can be achieved in a couple of hours or so each week. If you are unlucky enough to find yourself out of work, there is a huge demand for part-time gardeners. Sure, the wages are not that great, but it can boost morale to be active and helping out where it is really needed, and it keeps us fit. By Philip Baulk of Ashwood Nurseries Ltd

EYEBROW THREADING The skill of threading originates from the Middle East, China and India and is rapidly gaining popularity in Western countries. Practitioners use a pure thin, twisted cotton thread, which is rolled over unwanted facial hair at the follicle level, threading can remove an entire row of hair, resulting in a straighter line and providing a more defined shape.

DO PLATINUM BLONDE’S HAVE MORE FUN? As Pixie Geldof and Agyness Deyn are celebrated for their shining platinum locks at the launch of Graduate Fashion Week, Superdrug celebrates the unstoppable rise of the British home dye habit. Latest figures show that an estimated 57 per cent (around 17 million) British women dye their hair; this represents a 14 per cent increase since 2001, with 67 per cent of women choosing to dye their hair at home rather than visit a hair salon. While Pixie and Agyness choose striking platinum blonde, at Superdrug the most popular colour is a sophisticated rich brown with six out of every ten hair dye packs sold at Superdrug being brunette. But as Lily Allen brightens up the British music scene with her striking pink locks Superdrug has seen a recent rise in sales of its Smart Highlights kit (£4.99) in Carmine Pink. Superdrug sells more hair colour than any other retailer in Britain and knows what British women desire when it comes to their hair. Ting Ting Lee, hair care buyer at Superdrug said: “British women want fabulous colour with added gloss and shine and it’s good to see icons such as Pixie, Agyness and Lily paving the way for some brave colour choices. When Victoria Beckham went blonde sales of golden blonde shades rose by 20 per cent in a week, so we’ll be watching sales of platinum blonde to see if the day of the brunette is over… that’s if pink doesn’t pip them both to the number one spot of course!”

Compared to waxing, tweezing or using a razor Threading is more effective and less painful. Hair growth becomes finer and more sparse after regular treatments and the top layers of skin are not peeled or traumatised in the process.Threading is highly recommended and an excellent option for those who use Retin-A, Accutane and similar products. Eyebrow Threading is now available at Studio 524, High Street, Kingswinford call 01384 865126 to book. prices are as follows:- Eyebrows £5 Upper Lip £4.50 Chin £4.50 Lip & Chin £8 & Facial hair from £5

Vets Corner

Getting a bit ticked off?!

By Cat Henstridge BVSC MRCVS,of Connaught House Vets, Kingswinford Over the past few weeks I have seen a lot of ticks on dogs, so I thought an article about them would be timely. Ticks are small, grey, round-shaped creatures. They attach themselves to your pet and suck their blood. They can transmit some nasty disease but thankfully these aren't too common. Here you will find how to recognise ticks, how to remove them safely and how to prevent your pet getting them. What are ticks? Ticks are athropods, which means they have 8 legs. Adult ticks have a small, round, grey body and short legs. They favour moist environments and are more likely to be found in close undergrowth such as heather or woodland. They tend to be more common in early spring and autumn when the weather is moist and not too hot. They can only attach to your animal though direct contact, they cannot jump. How do I know if my pet has ticks? Ticks are generally easy to spot, but can be quite small when they first attach, so you may not notice them They grow larger as they become engorged with blood and you will find a small, grey, pea-sized mass stuck to your pet. Be careful not to mistake your animals nipples for ticks or vice versa! It may sound obvious, but the two can look very similar! How can I get rid of ticks? The most important thing with ticks is NEVER to PULL THEM OUT if you see them. The head parts are extremely firmly attached and will stay buried in the skin while the body comes away. This can cause a nasty skin reaction. Tweezers or special tick pullers should be used to remove ticks. The most important thing to remember is to TWIST, as if you were opening a bottle. This way the head should stay with the body. There are various veterinary spot -on treatments that both repel and kill ticks. If a tick does bite your pet after you have treated them with an anti-tick spot-on, the tick will take between 1-2 days to die. Tick-Borne Disease There are 3 main tick borne diseases, Lymes disease, Ehrlichiosis and Babesiosis. Only Lymes disease is present in the UK but the others can occur in dogs which have travelled abroad. The symptoms of all three are similar and include lethargy, fever, reduced appetite and lameness. All are quite rare, but if you are at all concerned about your pet you should speak to your vet. Tick borne disease is very rare in cats. For more information about ticks, or any aspect of pet care, contact your vet or visit www.yourpetshealth.co.uk. Whilst there are some risks involved, by following some simple rules you can ensure your barbecue is a safe and enjoyable event. • Make sure that your barbecue is in good working order. • Keep a bucket of water, a bucket of sand or a garden hose nearby in case of aaemergencies. • Make sure your barbecue site is flat and well away from sheds, fences, trees aa and shrubs. • Use only enough charcoal to cover the base of the barbeque to a depth of aaabout 50mm (two inches). • Never use petrol or paraffin to start or revive your barbecue. • Use only recognised lighters or starter fuel on cold coals. • If you are the chef, try not to drink too much alcohol whilst cooking. • Keep children, garden games and pets well away from the cooking area. • Never leave the barbeque unattended. • When you’ve finished cooking, make sure the barbeque is cool before trying to aamove it. Empty ashes onto bare garden soil. • Never put ashes straight into a dustbin or wheelie bin. If they’re hot they can aa melt the plastic and cause a fire. Short Breaks and Distillery Tours The ‘Business Trip’

North East Scotland

From time to time the demands of business necessitate a trip north of the border to meet whisky suppliers and sample new products, or so the story goes. If you have a few days to spare, there are some fantastic short city break options to Scotland, taking in of course one or two distilleries along the way.

It is a mighty long drive, but only a short flight to Aberdeen, one of Scotland’s most under-rated cities. It is generally famous for two things - the city’s links to the oil industry and its granite buildings. With a slightly Nordic feel and growing music and arts scene, Aberdeen is a surprisingly cosmopolitan base, from which to explore Royal Deeside and the little known delights of rural Aberdeenshire. A long winding road along Royal Deeside cuts through some of the North East’s most spectacular inland scenery, and is home to Royal Balmoral Castle and the attractive villages of Braemar and Ballater. Royal Lochnagar Distillery is located a short distance from Balmoral and provides a highly professional tour, although it can get very busy!

Edinburgh and Surrounds What better place to start than Scotland’s famous capital? Home to world class museums and galleries, and of course the famous Royal Mile and Edinburgh Castle. If you get fed up of the tourist crowds, you can do a lot worse than spend a few rainy hours in The Canny Man’s in up market Morningside - a pub famous for its quirky interior, rude staff and substantial whisky menu! As a base, Edinburgh provides easy access to a range of distilleries, including Glenkinchie in East Lothian. The distillery runs an informative tour describing the production of this gentle sweet malt. As the distillery is part of the large Diageo Group there is also the added bonus available of sampling some other company whiskies including Talisker and Lagavulin, to name but a few.

Glenkinchie Distillery Tullibardine Distillery is also within easy reach of Edinburgh. Situated in the village of Blackford in Perthshire, the distillery lies on the site of Scotland’s oldest brewery dating back to the twelfth century. The distillery has a well developed visitor centre and restaurant and also runs small group connoisseur tour’s for those who wish to indulge further.

Deeside and Royal Lochnagar Distillery

Inverness and Northern Highlands Again Inverness presents another increasingly accessible city break option (at least by plane!), with a simply vast range of distilleries on the doorstep you will be spoilt for choice. Options include the ‘official’ Malt Whisky Trail through Speyside, and the great ‘northern run’ to John O’Groats, taking in Glen Ord, Glenmorangie, Clynelish and Pulteney to name but a few! If you have a few days extra, why not take the short ferry trip to Orkney and the delights of Highland Park? The distillery will even take you on a half day trip (at extra cost of course) to the moor used to cut the peat to dry the malt. Try saying that after a dram or two! And finally...just some brief words of advice...make sure you book ahead if visiting distilleries during the peak holiday periods, try and avoid the ‘closed season’ (usually during June / July each distillery varies slightly), pack that waterproof mac and of course get somebody else to do the driving!
