THE VILLAGER MAGAZINE Welcome to the March edition of ‘The Villager Magazine’.

Spring is in the air; soon we will emerge from our winter hibernation to enjoy longer, lighter days. The start of British Summer Time takes place at the end of March. At 1.00 am on Sunday 27 March, the official time across the UK will move forward to 2.00 am, as British Summer Time starts for another year.

What better time than now to enjoy a spot of gardening, Philip Baulk of Ashwood Nurseries explains how timing is the key to a successful garden and you can find out more about the ‘Plant Hunters Fair’ at Bodenham Arboretum.

Following a great French themed evening at Ruskin Glass Centre, Chef Chris Williams has provided a nice recipe for Braised Chicken Chasseur. If you need to revamp your Spring Wardrobe we have a selection of fabulous clothes with real ‘Flower Power’. But if you are still on a mission to lose a few pounds, Personal Trainer Simon Shakespear has a few tips for losing that stubborn belly fat.

And if you feel the need to do something worthwhile and make a difference to others less fortunate than yourself, you can find out how to get involved on Red Nose Day and ‘Do something funny for money’. Plus much more.

Happy reading Maggie INSIDE THIS MONTH

TOP 7 FOODS FOR BLASTING BELLY FAT Exercise & Fitness

1WATER

Okay it's not a food, you got me. Just remember that a dehydrated body is not a good environment for fat loss and drinking more water keeps us full so we don't grab for seconds at the dinner table.

Keep yourself to 2 litres a day and replace your juices and fizzy drinks for this magic liquid instead. Eggs are high in Omega 3 Fatty acids (good) and also high in protein (good for building & toning muscle). Cheap to buy at the grocery store and very versatile. Make sure you buy free range and preferably organic to get the most benefit.

EGGS2

I love raspberries and blueberries and you should too because they are rich in antioxidants and high in fibre. A great substitution for cake and ice cream when it comes to desert time.

5GREENS

SPAMALOT tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table and features a bevy (or possibly a brace) of beautiful show girls, witch burnings (Cancelled: Health and Safety) not to mention cows, killer rabbits and French people. The show features the hilarious songs He Is Not Dead Yet, Knights Of The Round Table, Find Your Grail and of course the Nation’s Favourite Comedy Song ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE.

Greens (Spinach, Broccoli, Kale etc.) Vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, fibre and low in calories. If your plate is not filled with these then you are making a big mistake. Eat as much as you want of these. Don't hold back. It's an awesome source of good fats and also high in protein.

FISH6

You get amino acids, good fats, vitamins and anti oxidants all from this one little potato. These are awesome to eat after workouts.

So there are my 7 staple foods for rapid fat loss. Just a little tip: Make sure you stay on the outer ends of the supermarket when going shopping. Also stay completely away from processed foods and drinks that contain calories. Doing that alone will help you drop pounds ready for the summer holiday season!

Gardening

Timing is the Key to Success by Philip Baulk of Ashwood Nurseries Ltd

Gardeners just can't wait for spring to arrive, and after last December's bitterly cold weather, there will inevitably be many plant casualties in the garden that will need replacing.

March is a good time to do this so that you have the benefit of the whole of the growing season for new plants to become really well established. If winters are really getting colder, then it may be best to avoid planting anything that is somewhat on the tender side, and perhaps stick to plants that have been tried and tested over many years. Remember too that if you are removing an old shrub or a large herbaceous plant, then the soil will need replenishing with organic matter and some fertiliser to give your plants a good start. Well made garden compost and a good dusting of Fish, Blood and Bone fertiliser will be ideal for nearly everything. If you don't have any home-made garden compost, then nurseries and garden centres will have plenty of products that will do the job.

In cold greenhouses, many patio and bedding plants like fuchsias and geraniums will not have over-wintered successfully, so demand for these plants this spring is bound to be high. Seedlings and young plants are a great way to acquire a good number of plants economically, but for the best results, knowing just when to buy is all important. Different plants develop at different rates. Fibrous rooted begonias, for instance, take much longer to develop than quick growing plants like marigolds, but ideally everything needs to be ready to plant out towards the end of May or early June when the risk of night time frost is over. Generally, March or April are the best months to start your plants when the worst of the cold weather and dark days have passed. When selecting your plugs, always look for young, healthy plants and reject anything that looks pale or 'leggy'. Also be sure that you can provide the correct environment to allow your plants to grow quickly.

Ideally, you will need a greenhouse with some heating to give frost protection and a little warmth on cool days. A light windowsill will do as long as you remember to turn your plants every few days so that they get all-round light. This will help to keep them compact and bushy. Wherever you grow them, close attention to watering is vital; never too much and not too little.

In early May, you can plant up your hanging baskets, and on warm days you can bring these and any other patio plants outside to begin to acclimatise them to outdoor conditions; what we gardeners call 'hardening off'. By early June, it will be safe to plant everything out and you can then look forward to a colourful summer. It is often said that the spring season can be a series of false starts, as a warm sunny day in March can be followed by a cold wind and a frosty night. Experienced gardeners know almost instinctively when the time is right to prune and plant, sow or divide, but if you lack this experience or are a first time gardener, then generally it is better to be on the late side rather than to start too early. Gardeners are usually very helpful people and you only have to ask and they will give advice very freely. Listen carefully to what they say and it will not be long before you are the one giving advice; Happy Gardening.

‘ME AND MY GIRL’ COMES TO KINVER Well into rehearsal now is the show ‘Me and my Girl’ the ‘happy ever after’ musical which tells the tale of one Bill Snibson, a Lambeth costermonger who, by a twist of fate, inherits the title of Lord Hareford. His newly acquired aristocratic relations are horrified and, bringing him to Hareford Hall, they attempt to educate Bill into the ways of the gentry and to separate him from his cockney girl friend, Sally. The result? Chaos of a most comical kind!

The show will be presented at Edgecliff High School Theatre from 9th to 14th May. This musical has only just been re-released for amateur production and Kinver Light Operatic Society are lucky to be one of the first societies in the West Midlands to be able to present it upon its release.

Flower power

You may think that florals are only for the more feminine of the female species, but you’d be wrong.

1 Marks & Spencer. Dress, £69, belt, £29.50. 2 New Look. Yellow lace sleeveless top, £17.99, blue and yellow ditsy floral skirt, £29.99, sunglasses, £7.99, striped peep toe wedges, £24.99. 3 Bonmarché. Floral blouse, £20. 4 Lipsy. Zip front playsuit, £48. 5 Monsoon. Hannah Rose floral watercolour maxi dress, £180. 6 A|wear. Garden Party 3 floral blouse & camel shorts. 7 M&Co. Floral print top, £22. 8 Accessorize. Flower necklace, £18. 9 ASOS.com. Floral hotpants, £24. 10 French Connection. Confetti floral flared skirt, £57. 11 New Look. Floral print jumpsuit, £28.99, stripe bag with rope strap, £14.99, head scarf, £7.99; wedge cork shoes, £22.99. 12 Internacionale. Floating tiered cami top, £16.99. 13 Internacionale. Floral Millie mini satchel, £12.99.

Anyone can go all floral, but you do risk being mistaken for a sofa if you don’t get the combination right. Mixing lace and floral is a good compromise or simply slip into a maxi dresse that has a skirt that demands to be swooshed – M&S and Monsoon are good hunting grounds.

RECIPE of the month

BRAISED CHICKEN CHASSEUR

INGREDIENTS

4 CHICKEN LEGS (DRUMSTICK AND THIGH SEPARATE) 2TSP OLIVE OIL 250G WHOLE BUTTON MUSHROOMS 2 ONIONS ROUGHLY CHOPPED 1 TSPN TOMATO PUREE 300ML WHITE WINE 400ML CHICKEN STOCK 4 TOMATOES, QUARTERED AND DESEEDED SPRINKLING OF TARRAGON AND PARSLEY LEAVES

Chris Willams Catering Manager at Ruskin Glass Centre Cafe

METHOD

Season the chicken with salt and pepper. Heat the olive oil in a shallow casserole dish. Pan-fry the chicken over a medium-high heat, turning, until golden on both sides. Remove from the pan and keep to one side. Add the onions and mushrooms to the pan, stirring occasionally until they have a little colour and are beginning to soften, 6-8 mins. Stir in the tomato purée and white wine, then pour in the consommé or stock. Return the chicken to the pan and bring to a simmer. Place a lid on the pan and continue to cook, allowing the sauce to just simmer for about 1 hr, or until the meat is completely tender. To finish, skim the sauce of any further excess fat, then add the tomatoes. Simmer, without the lid, for a further 2-3 mins to soften them, then scatter over the herbs.

This cartoon has been drawn by a very talented young man David Kirkham from Glasshouse College. Giant Jaffa Cakes have recently featured on the Ruskin Glass Centre cafe menu and ‘Rusky’ the squirrel is getting up to mischief!

HE’S OFF AGAIN! Alan Peace, the Senior Warden at Himley Park, is off on yet another of his high altitude climbing adventures in aid of Cancer Research UK. This summer the 65 year old will be off to The Alps to attempt to climb Mont Blanc which, At 4,810 metres high, is the highest mountain in Western Europe. This will be his second attempt at this particular peak as he had to retreat a couple of hundred metres from the summit in 2009 when a blizzard made it far too dangerous to continue.

Alan’s climbing adventures in the past have sent him around the world to places such as Argentina, Russia, Morocco, Italy, Norway and Tanzania. He uses his adventures and talks about them to raise funds for Cancer Research UK to enable the charity to continue it’s vital research for the answer to an illness which affects one person in three in the UK. Since 1994 he has raised over £30,000 and is now an Ambassador for the charity. In addition to collecting an Express and Star Local Heroes award for his work, he was also named Cancer Research’s Ambassador of the Year in 2009.

Mont Blanc Needless to say Alan will be using his Mont Blanc expedition to raise further funds for the charity and if you would like to sponsor him, you can do so by going onto his ‘Just Giving’ web page at www.justgiving.com/Alan-Peace. This is simple, quick and safe. If you do not have a computer but would still like to sponsor him then please contact him on 01902 324065. By the way, ALL of the money raised goes to Cancer Research UK as Alan pays for all of his expenses himself.

22

What’s on at Ashwood Nurseries

John's Private Garden

"John's garden" is tucked behind Ashwood Nurseries and is a wonderful three acre private garden created by nursery owner John Massey and his gardening team. Informal borders, island beds and woodland dells are set against the beautiful backdrop of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. It is a "plantsman’s garden" that has an abundance of rare plants as well as many familiar favourites. The garden is a delight in spring with anemones, primroses, hepaticas, trilliums, erythroniums, narcissi, tulips and a host of other bulbs. In summer there are inspirational displays of herbaceous perennials, salvias, hydrangeas, clematis and grasses. This is a garden for all seasons with magnificent collections of trees, shrubs, and conifers adding to the interest all year round. There are many fine features including a stunning pool and rock garden planted with choice alpines and miniature bulbs, a

colourful lewisia wall, an anemone pavonina meadow and a unique succulent garden. A new hot border is home to an extensive collection of South African plants. Throughout the garden, urns and patio pots are imaginatively planted. Forthcoming Open Days 2011 This is a private garden but will be open to the public on the following Saturdays 10am to 4pm: March 19th, April 23rd, June 4th, July 23rd and September 24th. The fairs take place throughout the year at prestigious venues all around the UK . The National Memorial Arboretum, Weston Park, Ness Botanic Gardens and Bodnant Garden all host events and Bodenham Arboretum is delighted to be able to be the only venue in Worcester/South Shropshire to host these events in 2011. Last year’s event at Arley Arboretum attracted over 1000 visitors.

All the nurseries attending Plant Hunter’s Fairs are real growers, full of enthusiasm and knowledge for their plants and always happy to offer expert advice to help less experienced gardeners select the right plants for their gardens. For hardened plantaholics there are always those little treasures to discover that can’t be obtained elsewhere. Plant lovers can select from an impressive array of plants from nurseries including many new to the area.

Pets

Learning to speak

‘VET’

Written by Cat Henstridge BVSc MRCVS When you go to your vet with a problem they will explain what is wrong with your pet in terms you can understand. However, really they have a lot of very long and complex words to describe exactly the same things, which to any normal person sounds like a whole new language. So, I thought I would share a few of them with you, what they could mean and what they actually describe! Defecation Doesn’t mean pretending you can’t hear , it is actually a posh word for pooing !

Emesis No, not a ride at Alton Towers or your greatest enemy, actually the correct term for vomiting.

Melena I have always thought this sounds like a rather pretty girl’s name and I bet there is some poor person out there called it, I just hope they don’t know that it really means bloody poo!

Tachycardia Not the habit your Gran has for sending you cheap birthday cards but a way of describing a high heart rate.

Eructation This is the proper word for burping, so next time you let one out at the dinner table you can say ‘Oh I do apologise for my eructation’ and your family will be so impressed with your language they will forget all about it! Borborigmy This is one of my all time favourite words, I just love the way it sounds, and it means a rumbling tummy. Epistaxis Not a fabulous cab, actually a nose bleed.

26

Polydypsia & Polyuria Could be a couple of parrots but really is the way of describing a pet that drinks too much and wees too much because of an underlying disease. Varus & Valgus Not a pair of great Greek gods; a description for wonky legs! They are most often seen in pups with growth abnormalities or in some smaller breeds where it is considered ‘normal’.

Atrophy Not an award, the proper word for wasting away, as in the way muscles atrophy if people are bedridden.

Hypertrophy Not an excitable award! This is the opposite of Atrophy and means getting bigger. Just like a body builders muscles when they have been working out. So, next time you are in the surgery you can tell the vet ‘Oh, she is bound to have a tachycardia, she is always very nervous in here; in fact you are lucky she hasn’t defecated all over the floor!’. I am sure they will be very impressed! Cat is the resident vet for www.petstreet.co.uk, the UK’s largest pet lover’s social network. Please note, this is an advice only article, if you have any concerns about a pet, you should contact your vet.
