WHAT a start to 2010, snow chaos has kept many people away from work and left local businesses counting the cost of people staying indoors. Lets hope the weather improves considerably and we can all get back to normal. If you do venture out yourself during the cold spell it’s worth remembering to call on neighbours just to make sure they are warm, well and have enough of the essentials like bread and milk. It’s surprising how many people are house bound in bad weather and may not like to ask for help, you could be a life line for them. For now though put your feet up and enjoy this edition with a cuppa! Happy reading

Pets

Whats in a name?! Written by Cat Henstridge BVSc MRCVS

Being a Vet I obviously see a lot of animals and the name of a pet can tell me a huge amount about them and their owners, even before they walk through the door.

A recent survey uncovered that the most popular baby and pet names are exactly the same. I think as people are waiting longer to settle down and have children, pets are being used as a replacement. Molly, Oscar and Charlie are all in the top 10 but not Dave, which in my experience is an inexplicably popular name for cats! The more traditional names are out there but they have usually been chosen by either the very young or older people. Flopsy or Thumper the rabbit and Hammy the hamster often have very young owners, whereas Tabitha, Kitty or Tom the cat are usually owned by pensioners.

The names of pets often reflect the aspiration on their owners. Oberon and Tatiana are owned by those of a literary bent. Gucci and Chanel generally don't belong to people who can actually afford their products. Deefor and Ceefor are named by those who feel they are comedy geniuses (but sadly are not). Tyson or Satan are rarely owned by those who just want to lead a quiet life. TV has lot to answer for for pets names as well. From the very young; Iggle Piggle arrived in my surgery the other day, to the older; Morse and Lewis, we are all influenced by our favourite shows. It is also interesting to see how fashions change; Ant and Dec are probably around five years old now and Mulder and Scully are well into their teens. I am just waiting for Danni and Cheryl to walk though the door! Sports are another common trend and again reflect the stars of the time. Most Gazzas are sadly no longer with us, Shearer is getting on a bit now and even Rooney is a few years old.

I often don't even need to see some animals to know what they look like, particularly breeds of dog. Trust me, Killa and Asbo are NEVER small, cute, fluffy things. Whereas Mitzy, Fluffy or Baby are nothing but (despite often being more deadly than their ‘Asbo’ dressed for a walk in the park larger counterparts!). Snowball is rarely black (unless owned by a wag) and Smokey the cat is always grey. Some, however, catch you out. I saw Daisy the cat the other day, who turned out to be a very well endowed male! His owners didn't realise their mistake until he was too old to change it but they protect his pride by calling him 'Mr Daisy' to their friends!

So, take care when naming a new pet, it can often reveal more about you than you might like! However, I will give you one piece of advice, never, ever name anything Lucky, you are only asking for trouble!

Cat is the resident vet for the social networking site for pet lovers; www.petstreet.co.uk If you are ever concerned about a pet, you should always contact your vet for advice.

Health & Beauty

BACK TO NATURE – A HEALTHY 2010 From Sandra Cartwright of Studio 524 BACTERIA BUSTERS - NATURALLY

With the damp and cold weather come lots of viral and bacterial infections, I am often asked if essential oils can be used around the home to help to protect the family.

The answer is yes! Many essential oils are ANTISEPTIC, ANTIVIRAL & BACTERICIDAL and can be used around the home to give any room a natural, clean fresh smell, with the added bonus of boosting everyone’s immunity. (No chemical air fresheners are needed – so you are saving money too)

Simply use 2 drops of one of the following essential oils on a cloth to wipe down and keep work surfaces clean and hygienic: Cinnamon – lavender – Thyme - Clove - Pine - Lemon – Eucalyptus – Lime & Grapefruit Not forgetting the amazing Tea Tree Oil, which is a strong disinfectant, (much stronger than many chemical disinfectants), anti viral, antiseptic, anti bacterial and anti fungal, to name but a few of it’s properties. Why not give it a go and make 2010 healthy and natural.

(Take care with citrus oils on the skin – avoid contact with the eyes)

Lifestyle Make a New Year’s resolution to look in on older neighbours

With many older people living alone and more than 180,000 saying they have gone for a whole week without speaking to friends, family or neighbours, Care Service Minister Phil Hope is asking the public to make a New Year’s resolution to visit older neighbours more often. Social interaction can protect older people’s mental health, helping to do their shopping will prevent falls and injury and keeping an eye on their health will stop them developing serious health problems and ending up in hospital.

Do you lose most body heat through your head? When it comes to wrapping up on a cold winter's day, a cosy hat is obligatory. After all, most of our body heat is lost through our heads – or so we are led to believe. Closer inspection of heat loss in the hatless, however, reveals the claim to be nonsense, say researchers from Indiana University in the US who have dispelled this and other modern myths. Although it is a good idea to wrap up warm and cover up as much as possible in cold weather.

Hangover cures can be found in abundance such as ‘hair of the dog’ or ‘eating a fry up’ however, there is no scientific evidence of an effective cure. Keeping teetotal or drinking in moderation is the only way to avoid a dreaded hangover. If you have piled on the pounds over Christmas it could be because you have been eating later in the evening, as we know you are more likely to gain weight If you eat late at night! Ultimately, taking in more calories makes you gain weight whenever you eat them, the researchers said.

And Regardless of what parents might think, sugar does not cause hyperactive behaviour. Apparently it’s all in the mind!

14

Figures show: * over a million people over 65 feel trapped in their own homes; * more than 180,000 have gone for a whole week without speaking to friends, neighbours or family; * nearly half of all older people (about 4.6 million) consider the television as their main form of company; and * more than 50 per cent of over 75s live on their own. Phil Hope said: "Many older people live alone. For some that’s a choice, for others it means they feel isolated. We are a very caring nation so I’m asking people to make a resolution to look in on their older neighbours more often, to help them with shopping or to simply pop in for a chat.”

Justin Davis Smith, Chief Executive of Volunteering England, the volunteer development agency, added: "Spending a few hours with an elderly person can make a big difference to their quality of life and getting involved with volunteering its easier than you might think." With gas prices continually rising, electric heating is becoming an increasingly attractive option and growing in popularity amongst homebuilders, renovators and developers.

The majority of people do prefer the conventional central heating radiator as it is the most accepted method to warm a room. Water filled electric radiators work on exactly the same principal yet require no plumbing, pipe work, boiler or connection to a water supply. Water filled electric radiators therefore provide all the benefits of gas central heating, without the problematic installation, servicing and maintenance costs.

Unlike convector/panel heaters the electric radiators do not burn moisture in the air ensuring a comfortable and healthy atmosphere. No storage period is required, they heat up in just 10 minutes and are completely controllable, eliminating any wasted electricity. Making them an ideal alternative to storage heating or gas radiators for whole house heating, extensions, apartments, commercial premises or loft conversions.

If you would like to find out more you can contact Matt Hyde from Hydes Electrical Services on 01384 353522 or 07941 640872 Heaters can be supplied on a supply and installation basis or supply only.

Winter Warming Warning

As the cold spell continues Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service is urging people to consider fire safety when trying to keep warm.

-2%0).0 62%0).0 .+32).-1

We’d urge people to take extra care when using portable heaters and open or gas fires by not getting too close to them and by keeping flammable materials, such as clothes and curtains, a safe distance away.

In the first week of the year the Service has already attended a number of incidents caused by heating appliances, open fires and chimneys. The Service is hoping there is not a repeat of last January when there were four fatal house fires in just four weeks – three of these incidents were caused by open fires.

Head of Risk Reduction, Ian Sloss said: "Unfortunately we’ve already had one fatal house fire this year, believed to have been caused by a convector fan heater. We’d urge people to take extra care when using portable heaters and open or gas fires by not getting too close to them and by keeping flammable materials, such as clothes and curtains, a safe distance away. Fire guards should also always be used in front of open fires and chimneys and flues should be kept clean and well maintained."

In particular at this time of the year, it’s really important to consider the elderly, who are often more likely to feel the cold and may be more reliant on portable heaters and open fires. If you are elderly, or know of someone elderly who hasn’t received a free home fire risk we’d urge you to get in touch on our FREEPHONE number 0800 0241 999, so we can arrange a visit by our firefighters or one of our technicians. A home fire risk check reduces the risk of a fire occurring and gives you that extra piece of mind. A home fire risk check involves Firefighters or a Service Technician visiting your home to give fire safety advice and fitting equipment such as smoke alarms to ensure you are safer in your home. The FREEPHONE number to ring to request a check for Staffordshire is 0800 0241 999 and for West Midlands is 0800 389 5525 on ringing you will be able to arrange a mutually convenient time for the visit to take place. All Firefighters and Service Technicians carry an I.D card and will travel in Service vehicles. Although checks to the elderly and vulnerable are prioritised, the service is open to everyone.

Home & Garden

M a ke pla n s for the

ng

growi

season

Written by Philip Baulk of Ashwood Nurseries Ltd

With Christmas and the New Year celebrations behind us, those keen gardeners amongst us will be starting to make plans for the growing season. The less keen will probably want to wait until Easter at the very least!

Last year saw a huge increase in the number of people who were attempting, perhaps for the first time, to grow their own vegetables. Some of this was almost certainly encouraged by the economic recession, but having now tasted the flavours of really fresh produce, hopefully many people will want to build on their first experiences and become even better at it.

A lot of gardeners grow so much that they cannot possibly use it all before it goes passed its best. This especially applies to salad crops. It is far better to sow and grow smaller quantities at a time, and then have a succession of sowings to follow on. The raised bed principle works very well, and you do not need a very large area to work with. You can use some timber planks to mark off the area, and fill this with good garden soil. Locate the raised bed in a sunny position, and make it no wider than two metres, so that you can work from both sides without actually stepping onto the soil. It can be as long as you like, but it is surprising how much you can grow in a relatively small space. If you are lucky enough to have the space for a larger vegetable garden, then some of the most useful crops are potatoes, onions and leeks, runner beans, parsnips and carrots and most of the cabbage family including Brussels sprouts. These crops do not have to be used all at once, and will give you regular supplies for weeks or even months. All the fresh seeds are available in garden centres now, so why not start making your plans as to what you would like to grow, and obtain your seeds in good time ready for an early start. If flowers are more your scene, then winter does not have to be a dull time of year. There are lots of plants to brighten up the winter garden with both flowers and scent. Hellebores, Hamamellis, winter-flowering cyclamen and heathers, daphnes, snowdrops and many other winter-flowering shrubs can brighten up the darker months. These plants tend to last much longer in flower because the weather is generally cooler, and they are really good value. If you haven’t visited a nursery or garden centre at this time of year before, then do give it a try. You may be surprised at just how many plants can be found in flower that are perfectly hardy in this area, and nearly all of them come year after year without the need to replant.

Global warming is now a serious problem for all of us, but on the plus side, milder temperatures have made winter gardening much more pleasant and increased the range of plants that will now really thrive and bring colour to the very dullest days of the year, so why not give it a go?

Know your new numbers at Dudley Council

Santa helps push Kinver Rotary Club sleigh to record £4,800 collection

Dudley Council has set up the new easy to remember 0300 555 numbers which still allow people to talk directly to the council.

The Christmas sleigh tour by Kinver Rotary Club resulted in a record collection that was tantalisingly close to £5,000.

People are being urged to make sure they know the new numbers to contact Dudley Council all day every day.

The Dudley Council Plus contact number is now 0300 555 2345 as opposed to the old 01384 812345. Also, the new number for housing repairs management centre is 0300 555 8283, Callpay (24 hour automated payment line) is 0300 555 7000, council tax and housing benefits is now 0300 555 8100 and revenues will be available on 0300 555 8000. All 0300 numbers are charged at a local rate from a landline or mobile number and cost no more than the existing 01384 numbers. The 01384 numbers will remain in operation alongside the new 0300 numbers while a phased transfer to 0300 is established.

Feel Safe and Have a Happy New Year!

Thanks to the agreement of the management of Aldi supermarkets to allow the sleigh to be parked outside their Wollaston store for a day, and an invitation to take it to Hodge Hill Nurseries at Blakedown, the 2009 total was £4,842 – an increase of more than £600 on the 2008 total. The actual street collection throughout Kinver and Enville and parts of Wollaston raised £4,212 – exactly £1 more than last year.

Despite treacherous icy roads the sleigh, totally refurbished on a new trailer at a cost of more than £2,500, completed its scheduled programme, although Santa was required to help to push it up some of the slopes on untreated roads in Kinver residential areas. It was impossible, however, to reach the top of some of the steeper gradients.

Club President Nigel Williams says: “It was a tribute to the people of the three communities we visit that they matched last year’s total despite the current economic problems. The added bonus was our visit to Aldi where customers gave more than £550 and our short trip to Hodge Hill Garden Centre. “As always the entire proceeds will be donated to local charities in the New Year” Mr Williams praised the members of the club, led by Rtn Roy Sanders and Rtn Colin Weaver who rebuilt the sleigh on its new trailer. He also commended all members of the club for turning out in some of the coldest weather in the 24 years history of the event and apologised to those residents who were visited by a collector without Santa when he was stuck on the sleigh at the bottom of an incline.

On The Road

Make sure you correct the voluntary excess as on most sites this automatically defaults to £500 and if available select to opt out of marketing calls, however, this is not available on all sites. Once you have found the cheapest click through to the insurance provider's own website to double check the quotes, as to speed up searches some comparison sites make a few assumptions.

CAN YOU SAVE MONEY ON YOUR CAR INSURANCE When your car insurance is up for renewal make sure you get the best deal going. Insurance premiums can differ incredibly and depend on the insurer, the level of cover and how risky you're perceived to be.

To get the best possible cover for the lowest premium start by defining your cover and ensuring you’re as low a risk as possible as Insurers decide prices depending on historic risk assessments. Beware of monthly payment options - usually the insurer actually just loans you the annual cost and then charges interest at hideous rates on top. So either pay in full, or if you can't afford it, use a credit card with a lower APR rate or better still, a 0% credit card ensuring your repayments are big enough to clear it within a year. Correctly combining comparison sites will help you to get the best deal. Comparison sites zip your details to hosts of insurers' and brokers' websites, to report back the cheapest. Do be aware however, that as comparison sites send your details to insurers to get quotes, there's a slight chance you may get sales calls or emails later from the insurers. It’s also worth being aware some insurers also carry out a quick credit check when they provide you with a quote. 1. 2. 3. 4.

www.moneysupermarket.com www.gocompare.com www.confused.com www.comparethemarket.com

28

If you still haven’t found a deal you’re happy with there are many more options to try. A couple of insurer's, Direct Line and Aviva, refuse to be included by any comparison site and can be competitive so it's worth checking these separately.

The car insurance market is very competitive and companies are desperate to retain business. Therefore once you've got your overall cheapest price get on the phone and try to haggle with your existing insurer. There's often massive price flexibility, happy hunting.

NEW CAR TAX RULES FOR 2010 From April 1, 2010, there will be a one-off rate for Vehicle Excise Duty for the first year a car is registered. The government says this is designed to 'send a stronger signal to the buyer about the environmental implications of their car purchase and will only apply to new cars, not already registered cars'.

Low-pollution vehicles in bands A-D will pay no tax in the first year, but some taxes are doubled. Owners of top-polluting cars will pay £950 for their 12-month tax disc. Ouch. From the second tax disc onwards they will then pay the standard rate. For existing cars, there will also be changes to the price of tax. Depending on your vehicle's emissions levels you could find yourself paying up to £30 more or £30 less.
