The finest quality Curtains, Blinds, Wallpaper & Accessories

Soon we can enjoy longer, lighter days. At 1.00am on Sunday 30 March, the official time across the UK will move forward to 2.00 am, as British Summer Time begins for another year. Sunday March 30 is also Mother's day, the fourth Sunday of Lent. It is exactly three weeks before Easter Sunday which is 20th April. As the days get longer and hopefully the weather brighter, it is a great time of year to get out into the garden or make a start on jobs around the house. Please continue to support our advertisers and don’t forget to tell them you found them in TheVillager. Maggie

Speaker Secretary Pauline Handley explained the new programme which included talks on Witley Court, Canal Art, My Life my Passion, the Old Hall Story, Waterboring in the Grenadines, Flower Arranging and Nova Chocolates.

Ann Rogers is busy arranging a visit to Dudley Zoo with a cream tea and a coach outing to Gloucester Docks.

On the move? The Modern Way To Sell or Let Your Home!

oday, the way we search for property has changed, no longer do we trawl the streets looking in agents’ windows and registering our details, we do the walking with our fingers using tablets and mobiles.

T

With this in mind Kat Jones who has more than 20 years’ experience in the Estate Agency business has launched her new company Orchard Estates and Lettings.

Kat who has been an NVQ assessor for trainee estate agents is qualified in the Technical Award of the NAEA and ARLA realised there was a gap in the market and has seized the opportunity to bring Estate Agency and Lettings up to date. Kat told us: “The majority of people now use search sites such as Rightmove, Zoopla and Prime Location to search for properties, therefore there is no longer the need to have High Street offices with huge overheads. At Orchard Estates and Lettings we are different in that by not having a high street office the low overhead savings we make are directly passed to our clients.”

Kat is dedicated to offering a fantastic, personalised, 1-2-1 service and offers a wealth of local knowledge and useful insight into what people require when buying and selling, with tailored packages so you only pay for the services you want.

Kat added: “I want to give clients an alternative option to the traditional high street. I offer all the components of a High Street agent such as, FREE Market Appraisals, Accompanied Viewings, Marketing Plans and Regular Sales Progression Updates with a much lower fee. Orchard Estates and Lettings are open longer hours, 9am – 9pm to give flexibility to clients. We are on Rightmove, Zoopla, Prime Location and have our own website www.orchardestatesandlettings.co.uk.” Orchard Estates and Lettings also offer services for letting property; Fully Managed and Let Only are designed to deliver high standards at an affordable cost to both Landlord and Tenant. Fully Managed Lets gives peace of mind to the Landlord that the property is looked after. Tenants also get peace of mind, as they benefit from having a professional dealing with maintenance issues and queries.

VILLAGER GARDENING

Looking forward to summer ollowing the recent dreadful weather it is time to begin work in the garden. Springtime must be the most important season in preparation for a colourful display of flowers during the summer months.

F

Most gardens look tired at the moment and in need of some T.L.C. Start with a good clean-up of leaves and plant debris. Overgrown shrubs and hedges need pruning and shaping but it is best to avoid being too severe with the first cut, especially so with conifers. Pruning roses early March is the best way of ensuring plenty of blooms later. It is also a good time to lift and divide older perennials.

Flower borders have been panned down because of the constant rain, carefully fork around plants in order to break up the hard surface and aerate the ground. This can be followed with an application of chicken manure pellets to provide plant nutrition. I know my lawn is looking in a bad way and has more than its fair share of moss – possibly the worst I have ever encountered. This will need an early treatment of lawn moss killer and feed. Because of the difficulty of applying a granular treatment evenly I prefer to use a liquid treatment. Forking the lawn beforehand will be an aid to drainage. I will probably end up with plenty of bare patches once the moss has been dealt with so I am avoiding any use of lawn weed killer at this stage because I will need to do some re-seeding later. Now is the time to make sure that your lawn mower is in good working order in preparation for the first cut and visit a garden centre to purchase any shrubs or perennials once your borders have been dealt with.

Finally you can choose which summer annuals you will use for tubs and baskets but make sure this is done after the possibility of frosts has passed. HAPPY GARDENING

When a heart murmur is diagnosed, it can be helpful to perform some extra tests to determine how the heart is coping and what exactly is causing the sound. Techniques include ultrasound scanning (although some vets may need to refer you to a specialist for this), using x-rays to measure the size and shape of the heart and taking your dog’s blood pressure. It can be very useful to repeat these regularly (once or twice a year) to monitor the progress of the condition.

There are also things you can do at home. I advise my clients to take their pet’s heart rate at least once a week when they are relaxed, so any increases (which can indicate a worsening of the disease) can be picked up quickly. I also advise regularly timing a short walk they do often. This allows them to pick up on the very subtle slowing down that will occur early in the disease. Believe it or not dogs are far more naturally athletic and fit than us humans (even fat little Cavies!) and although, like people, they will eventually become breathless & find exercise more challenging, they can hide these effects of heart failure for some time. Other symptoms can include a soft wet cough, collapsing or even going blue or pale at the gums. However, these usually occur only when the heart is in advanced failure and treatment will be more difficult.

Before heart failure develops the best thing you can do for your pet is ensure they stay slim. Being over-weight makes it much harder for the heart to function well. However, once it occurs, the sooner treatment is started the better, which is why looking for the more subtle signs of the problem is so important. The good news is there are many different medications that can help your pet, which will very significantly increase their length and quality of life. So, if your vet finds a heart murmur in your dog, don’t panic! Keep them in tip top condition, be vigilant for the signs of heart failure and once they occur ensure they start on medication quickly. With this your best friend is likely to be with you for some time yet, which will keep both your hearts from breaking!

So, if you don’t want to go and buy a new PC what other options do you have?

If the computer or laptop you are using has Windows XP or Vista, and it is a high enough specification to run Windows 7, it may be more cost effective to have Windows 7 installed on it.

As a Microsoft Authorised Refurbisher we can sell, install and setup Windows 7 on computers that did not come with it pre-installed from new. Windows 7 does require a Dual Core processor and a minimum of 2Gb memory, if you are unsure how to find this out, we can run a pre-assessment to make sure it is capable before continuing, or we can quote you on anything that needs to be upgraded first.

Several pricing options are based on the amount of work involved. To install Windows 7 it requires the computer to be blanked (erased) prior to installing, so if you have no documents, pictures and email etc. that you want keeping the price is £75.00, if you require your data to be transferred then there is an additional charge of £25.00, both prices are based on dropping it off at our workshop. Compared to a new computer, this does provide a good financial alternative; making use of your old equipment has never been easier. PC Problems? Please call us on 01384 571538

The Gentlemen Songsters Male Voice Choir and Viva Musica are both based in the Metropolitan Borough of Dudley, and both contribute significantly to the local area by their charitable fund raising, The Gentlemen Songsters were presented with the Mayor of Dudley’s Award for services to the community in 2013. The mixed voice Viva Musica choir was founded in Dudley in 1989, and comprises about 70 voices, and The Gentlemen Songsters, as their name suggests is an all male choir of about 73 members, and was founded in 1957.

Their combined selection of music includes classical, religious, modern and popular choral music together with items made famous by such artists as Queen, The Beatles, Elvis Presley to name but a few and there are many other items from the popular London West-End musical shows.

The choirs are both well known locally and nationally for their individual performances in major concert halls and in local churches and community centres, and both have travelled on concert tours throughout Europe and beyond.

This concert offers a rare opportunity to see them appear on stage together, and they will perform individual items and a few joint items during the evening. The evening’s entertainment will be brought together and presented by Master of Ceremonies, Michael Collie of BBC Midlands Today.

Proceeds from this concert will be divided between the charities which are being supported in 2014 by the two choirs – Viva Musica are helping Parkinson’s UK, and the Gentlemen Songsters are supporting the Mayor of Dudley’s Charity Appeal (on behalf of the White House Cancer Support, Dudley, and Hearing Dogs for Deaf People). Tickets for the concert are available through the following channels Viva Musica - 01384 371388 Gentlemen Songsters Male Voice Choir 01384 838863 Dudley Council Plus - 01383 812812 or online at www.dudley.gov.uk/entertainment

Bag a pre-loved wedding outfit at

I-do-2 on March 15

edding bargain hunters who want to look stunning on their special day are in luck, because, for the first time, pre-loved wedding outfits will be available to purchase at the Priory Hall wedding open day.

W

Once-worn designer and off-the-peg bride, groom, bridesmaid and page boy clothes will be sold at the popular nuptials event on March 15, as part of the register office’s new I-do-2 offer. Some of the spectacular outfits will be modelled at fashion shows which will be held throughout the day.

HISTORY SOCIETY WHAT’S ON

MAR. 13TH - AROUND THE BRITISH ISLES Keith Ca+el brings an illustrated talk looking at the history, buildings and scenery of some of the smaller islands around Britain.

APR. 10TH - LIFE IN THE 1950'S

John Billingham brings back memories of the 1950’s with an illustrated talk. A chance to recall the characters, fashions and music of those days.

Mee*ngs are held at Wordsley Green Community Centre at 7.30pm on the second Thursday in the month. New members always welcome and visitors at a cost of £2 including light refreshments.

28

In addition to picking up an amazing wedding outfit at a fraction of shop-bought prices, people who attend the open day can talk to exhibitors for deals on everything from flowers and ceremony cars, to photographs and favours. Would-be husbands and wives can also take the opportunity to view the grade II-listed Priory Hall registration office and surrounding Priory Park. The park features the old Priory ruins and is overlooked by Dudley Castle.

Councillor Gaye Partridge, cabinet member for human resources, law and governance, said:

“When planning a wedding people often focus first on wedding clothes. This is an ideal opportunity for people to bag a beautiful bargain. It is the first time that we have run I-do-2, so we will watch carefully to see what interest there is in pre-loved outfits, to see whether to carry on this initiative throughout the year.” For more details on the Priory Hall open day wedding exhibition, which will run from 10am to 4pm, call 01384 815373, visit www.dudley.gov.uk
