Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with

a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’

Cloudy2Clear service all of the service Kingswinford, Wordsley and Wall Villager Magazine areas and Brian Heath areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of

business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

EXTENDED WARANTIES SHOULD YOU BUY ONE?

Extended warranties have over the years obtained a bad name, in hind sight I think that is purely down to the sales techniques used and the lack of upfront truth for example; what it does and does not cover. In recent years retailers have been working hard to make things much more transparent, making the decision easier based on the facts you have in front of you. Times when an Extended Warranty is a good idea… 1. If the warranty covers you for accidental damage, and you just happen to be naturally clumsy, or your kids just seem to throw everything about! 2. Expensive equipment such as a £1000 Apple Mac or a 50” Plasma TV. If the Apple Mac goes wrong outside of the 12 months warranty, then it may cost you an arm and a leg to get repaired, likewise getting that 50” 40Kg plasma TV in the back of your Mini, and driving back to the shop is just not a reality.

On the other hand… 1. Extended warranties that include technical support on a dedicated telephone number. Most often you call the number, weave your way through 50 options on a automated system, then hold for 30 minutes and end up speaking to someone you can’t understand! 2. Desktop PC’s, most modern PC’s are now made from standard parts, so the £150 warranty you are offered in the shop, often works out more expensive than the actual repair cost.

Always sit down and take the time to read and understand the small print, if you’re not sure ask and double check.

JULY

Time to Feed and Weed By Philip Baulk Head Gardener of Ashwood Nurseries Ltd

All your spring planting should now be completed and your plants should all be growing well in the long summer days. There will still be regular sowings of salad crops to be made to ensure a constant supply to the kitchen, and there will be lots of ‘maintenance’ jobs to do. In showery weather, there will always be weeds to eradicate from your borders and vegetable patch, and if the weather is dry or windy, then the watering can will be kept busy. Try to water in the evening and take the opportunity to add some liquid fertiliser like Phostrogen or Miracle Gro to the water. This will keep plants growing and productive, and will help them to resist pests and diseases. If you garden on sandy soil, any spell of warm dry weather will cause your lawn to turn brown and parched.

It is very tempting to put a sprinkler on to keep it green, but this is not really sustainable environmentally. Surprisingly, your lawn is unlikely to suffer any long term damage from a prolonged dry spell, and as soon as the cooler nights and heavy dews of autumn begin, your lawn should regenerate and green up quite quickly.

Many roses will have produced their first flush of flowers by now, and it is time to dead head all those that have already faded. Cut these back to the first strong new growth, and this will then produce more flowers in a few weeks time.

10

A dressing of rose fertiliser will also stimulate the production of more flowers, and keep an eye out for black spot, mildew and greenfly. These can all be controlled by spraying with easy to use spray guns. The best time to do this is in the evening.

July is a good time to visit other gardens to glean some new ideas for your garden design and your planting combinations. John’s Garden at Ashwood Nurseries is open on Saturday 20th July in aid of Cancer Support at the White House Dudley. As well as a beautiful three acre garden to explore, there will be other entertaining surprises on the day, but you will have to visit to find out just exactly what they are.

This is also a nice time of year to ask friends round to enjoy your own garden and if it is lacking colour, there are still plants available to plant up some patio pots for instant colour. It is surprising how one or two strategically placed pots can create a focal point to enhance your garden.

Happy Gardening

Ever So British Where taste matters

Our story began when we visited one of our local food heroes, Craig Finch, Finest Quality Butcher, Bridgnorth – whose products such as the wonderful traditional pork sausage are award-winning and each mouthful is truly like tasting a moment of excellence. But his passion to make the very best sausage, handmade from only the best local ingredients, is what we truly admire. Devotion, passion with a real love for everything he sells. From this experience, the idea for Ever So British was born in Shropshire - to find producers of fine local foods from across our green and pleasant land, starting within our home county.

That was 6 months ago. Today, we now have over 30 carefully selected producers including others from outside the County too, with a wonderful array of products for you to choose from, all online at www.eversobritish.co.uk. Wonderfully delicious cheeses and chutneys, coppa and lomo, summer jams, cooking oils and dressings; handmade pork pies and gourmet sausage rolls, locally-sourced smoked wild salmon and potted crab, luxury chocolate, pickled samphire and blended juices - and so, so much more.

Tastes to die for

What binds them together is that each of them is Ever So British. Honest, inventive and committed to the highest standards, every producer takes from the land – and creates tastes to die for. Some will take you back to your childhood. Others will propel you to another place, where new tastes and flavours tempt the palate. But that is the British way. Ever since Sir Walter Raleigh introduced the humble potato to these shores in 1586, we have embraced new ingredients and cuisines. Many foods have been traditionally handmade, are either rural or pastoral goods. At Ever So British, we are proud to introduce their artisanal skills to you. The only thing we won’t ask you to do is to queue for your products. “Now that is Ever So British.” We will bring you various deli selections with FREE direct delivery to your home*...so you can enjoy great food at your convenience. Perhaps you love to try different tasting experiences, like to buy for a treat, a party or celebratory occasion... or simply want to share something special with family and friends.

Taste of Summer – just one of our great selections

There are lots of summer treats here for a lazy lunch, a proper afternoon tea or relaxing evening in the garden, all part of life’s great pleasures... as we have recreated the experience with this indulgent selection. A choice of Cheeses, Meats, Smoked Salmon, Salad Dressings, Cake, Biscuits, Jam and Juices and much, much more...Enjoy!

Sign-up for your European Health Insurance Card

As many people start planning to take their annual summer holiday, Chris Kelly, Member of Parliament for Dudley South, is reminding people in Dudley and the Black Country to sign-up for their European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Chris Kelly MP said:

“Staycations’ are increasingly popular at the moment but many people look forward to a holiday in Europe. In order to access health services on the continent without charge, UK travellers should take with them a European Health Insurance Card, issued free of charge by the government to UK citizens. It only takes a couple of minutes to sign up for your card on the website www.ehic.org.uk.

For those who do not have internet access, phone 0300 330 1350 or write to EHIC Enquiries, PO Box 1114, Newcastle upon Tyne NE99 2TL.

Whilst the EHIC does not completely replace basic travel insurance, applying for your cards is one bit of administration every family should complete before travelling within Europe. Without an EHIC alongside their travel insurance, British citizens can be landed with considerable bills should they fall ill abroad.” The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) replaced the old E111 in 2006.

Your EHIC lets you get state healthcare at a reduced cost or sometimes for free. It will cover you for treatment that is needed to allow you to continue your stay until your planned return. It also covers you for treatment of pre-existing medical conditions and for routine maternity care, as long as you're not going abroad to give birth.

PACK LIGHT SAVE POUNDS

With the ever-increasing cost of ‘Baggage’ on airline travel, it's essential that you pack light to avoid additional fees.

Having found your flights and hotel for a great price your holiday is off to a flying start, however, don’t get caught out with costly ‘checked in baggage’.

Can’t get everything into a carry-on case make sure you book your ‘checked in baggage’ before your trip as it will cost far more on the day.

Here are a few tips to help you pack light and save pounds.

It is essential to check out carry-on luggage size and weight restrictions with the airline that you are travelling with. A good number of airlines now allow up to 10kg of hand luggage which must be packed in just one bag but some do allow it to be split between two.

Choose between a carry-on convertible bag, a carry-on rolling case or an internal-frame backpack it doesn’t matter which as long as it fits the airlines size allowance when packed.

First and foremost, don't over pack. You never need a different outfit for each day of the week; rather, take versatile, complimentary items that can be layered, as well as switched around for variety.

Decide what to pack for a trip by laying out everything you think you might need. Consider each item carefully and, unless you know for a fact that you'll use it, leave it at home.

Liquid in containers larger than 100ml can’t go through security even if the container is only part full. www.gov.uk for more info

16

Pack mix-and-match clothing. Roll or fold clothing one piece inside another. Packing cubes will allow you to sort clothing and essentials such as underwear, beachwear and accessories into neat compartments, compression bags can shrink down your luggage by allowing you to simply place your luggage inside, seal the bag up then roll the air out.

Don’t forget to pack the electronic items you can't live without. Most mobile phones, have an alarm, music centre, internet access and a camera which saves space. Small travel hairdryers don’t take up too much room but check first you may have one in your hotel room. And finally bring your travel information in as few pieces of paper as possible. Loss of loved ones

Q

Dear Lakshmi my name is Stella and I am 35. Six years ago I lost both my parents in tragic circumstances. Since then, I haven’t been able to sleep properly, I can’t concentrate on my job and I’m very restless. I suffer with huge panic attacks which seem to have got worse over the years. Can you help?

A

Hi Stella. First of all allow me to say how deeply sad I am to hear that you lost both your parents. You also mention it was under tragic conditions. This must have left you feeling so lost at times. First of all, I am wondering Stella, have you spoken to your GP about your symptoms?

Secondly, have you received any bereavement counselling? No matter how old we are, when we lose our parents, the pains are incredible. Suddenly the whole foundation of your life has collapsed, leaving you in utter shock.

When we experience such sudden shock, we go through various stages. These include, denial, anger bargaining and depression. Of course these don't come in a neat little order or time period, as we are all unique individuals. So, if you have the opportunity to receive bereavement counselling, it would help.

It seems that you are still at a loss and have many unanswered questions. You may be blaming yourself or feeling guilty, or regretting things from the past. You need help to move forward.

Imagine a mighty journey

Imagine we have found a piece of drift wood on the beach. We pick it up and examine it. It's a very robust and a strong piece of drift wood. We don't know its origins. All we can see is that it had a mighty journey as it shows its age by all the cracks, holes and wart like little lumps on it. We are not sure how it came to be on the beach. We have to assume that one day it fell into a river, somewhere in the world and floated along in the water. On its journey, it may have got stuck on the river bank perhaps many times. It would have seen many trees, seasons, the sun rise and set, followed by the moon rising and setting. One thing is for sure is that it just kept on drifting with the energy of the earth knowing one day it would end up in this border less mighty and free ocean.

one day it fell into a river, somewhere in the world and began its mighty journey.... What I am trying to say in my story Stella is you need to help yourself move forward and accept the change in your life. You can then go on and enjoy being alive, remember your own life is so precious.

I am going to ask you to sit down and do this little exercise for just 5 minutes every day.

As you know your breath is an automatic activity under the control of your subconscious mind. But have you ever thought about your breath? What it means to you? Every breath you take is incredibly powerful and lets you know you are alive. Just say 'thank you' for breathing. Consciously watch and appreciate each breath. You will become grateful for your being. When you discipline yourself to watch your breath your conscious mind begins to relax and your body will relax as a result. In the West people call it relaxation. In the East people call it Meditation or hypnosis. Try it. Be open-minded, like a new born baby. Don't prejudge my advice. Just flow freely like the drift wood. See what results it brings.

Stella, I am sending you my kindest Regards and lots of well wishes for you to see the way forward and to travel with ease, comfort, and harmony. Please let me know how you are doing. If you need further advice, you know how to contact me. Lakshmi

THE KILLER IN YOUR CAR

Written by Cat Henstridge BVSc MRCVS.

There is a deadly poison in your car and probably in your garage or shed as well. Although you wouldn’t think it, our pets find it quite tasty and even the fussiest eater will happily lick it up but it causes great suffering and can be fatal within just a few hours. The name of this killer? Anti-freeze.

Anti-freeze, or to give it it’s chemical name, ethylene glycol, is a syrup like liquid with no smell but a sweet taste that many pets find attractive. However, it is highly toxic, with cat’s being much more sensitive to it’s effects than dogs, although it is deadly to both species. Once the poison is in the body it destroys the kidneys beyond repair and unless an antidote is given quickly, the animal will die or have to be put to sleep.

The initial symptoms of anti-freeze poisoning are vague and non-specific. Affected pets may be lethargic, nauseous, drooling and wobbly on their feet. Unless they have been actually seen to drink anti-freeze it is very difficult to identify it is the cause in the early stages. As the poison destroys the kidneys, the animal will quickly become obviously very poorly. Once they are brought to the vets they will likely have blood tests taken and these will show the kidneys have stopped functioning. Unfortunately the kidneys are a non-regenerative organ, which means once the cells have been destroyed, they cannot be replaced.

It is possible to treat anti-freeze poisoning but only if treatment is started within an eight hour window. If your vet thinks there is a chance of survival they will start your pet on a drip, containing both saline and the antidote, pure alcohol. So don’t be surprised if your vet says they are going to put your pet on a vodka infusion! They are likely to stay on treatment for at least a couple of days and they will need further blood tests to determine how well the kidneys have recovered.

Sadly, only in a minority of cases does this treatment work, or is even started. Most pets are well beyond saving by the time they reach their vets (and this is no fault of their owners, most animals go from perfectly healthy to end stage kidney failure in just a few hours). This means that prevention is the best cure, so please ensure that any anti-freeze in your shed is well out of reach of any pet (and bear in mind most cats are great climbers!) and that your cars radiator isn’t leaking. In America it is now law that all products containing ethylene glycol contain a bittering agent to make it unpalatable to pets, sadly this isn’t the case in the UK. Join the fight to help make this happen by writing to your MP and adding your signature to the on-line government petition.

Cat is a local vet at Connaught House Vets in Kingswinford. If you have any concerns about a pet, you should always contact your vet.

SUMMER SAFETY USING OUTDOOR ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT SAFELY Wrien by Marn of Electrical Experts

Although electricity makes tending to your garden much easier, wet conditions and contact with the ground means that the risk of injury or death from an electric shock is much greater than using electrical equipment indoors. Many garden accidents happen because someone handles equipment carelessly, doesn’t concentrate properly or fails to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. By following simple safety rules every time you work in the garden, you can easily avoid a serious accident. Here are some simple but effective tips to help you avoid accidents caused by using electrical equipment outdoors.

TIPS FOR WORKING SAFELY IN THE GARDEN If you do not check the condition of extension leads, cables and connections and use them correctly, you could get an electric shock.

FOR SAFETY MAKE SURE THEY ARE:

Suitable for outdoor use weather resistant with moulded connections that prevent moisture seeping in. Rated correctly to suit the equipment you want to connect to them Uncoiled to prevent them from overheating Kept clean and free from damage Replaced if damage is found Used according to the manufacturer’s instructions Positioned appropriately to prevent them being damaged Kept dry

ALWAYS

Use a residual current device RCD for all outdoor electrical equipment and use the ‘test’ button regularly to check that it is working correctly. An RCD is a life saving device that protects against dangerous electric shock Buy good quality electrical equipment from a manufacturer you trust. Be on the lookout for fake or copied equipment, the UK is being flooded with these potentially dangerous products. Look for the beab label or ‘kitemark’ symbol. Wear protective clothing and footwear Take care when you are digging, electric, gas and water services may be buried Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Store electrical equipment in a dry place away from children Have your equipment P.A.T portable appliance tested by a registered electrician Consider having outside IP rated RCD protected sockets fitted in your garden, not only are they more convenient, but there safer NEVER

Use electrical equipment in the garden when it is raining Clean, adjust or check equipment while it is connected to the electricity supply Touch damaged equipment and cables before switching off the electricity supply Try to repair equipment yourself Wash equipment with water, unplug the equipment and clean it with a damp cloth Use electrical equipment while barefoot or wearing sandals Leave electrical equipment plugged in while you are not using it

28

Why do I need a residual current device RCD when I use electrical equipment outdoors?

An RCD can be a life saver. Without it, if you cut through an electrical lead, a simple job like mowing the lawn could kill you. An RCD is a life saving device which is designed to prevent you getting a fatal electric shock if you touch something live, such as a bare wire.

All equipment such as lawnmowers, hedge trimmers and other power tools when you use them outdoors should only be plugged into a socket protected by an RCD. To protect you against electric shock the rated tripping current of the RCD must be 30 milliamps mA or less. If you haven’t got sockets that are protected by an RCD you should buy and use a portable RCD. When buying a portable RCD check that it is clearly marked to show that it meets British Standard 7071 its rated current is 13amps and its rated tripping current is 30 milliamps mA. A more permanent and possibly safer solution than using a portable RCD is to get a registered electrician to provide RCD protection for all the sockets in your home that can be used for outdoor equipment. Having RCD protection is a condition of the national safety standard BS7671 (Requirements for Electrical Installations) for virtually all sockets in new electrical installations and sockets added to existing installations. Whatever the type of RCD you have in your home you must regularly test it by using the ‘Test’ button. You should test portable RCDs every time you use them. However, do not press the test button for a long time if the device does not trip. If the RCD does not switch off the electricity supply when you press the test button, get advice from a registered electrician. If you require any further advice then please do not hesitate to call me, your local qualified electrician on 01384 660095.
