INSIDE THIS MONTH Timing is the Key to Success

Summer bedding plants can also be damaged by late frosts. Many places offer them for sale in early May, but for me, this may be alright for antirrhinums and a few other slightly hardier subjects, but is far too early for the more tender plants like marigolds and begonias. A late frost can burn the foliage and reduce your display for the rest of the season. Similarly with hanging baskets, do not hang them on their brackets until the very end of May. It is fine to stand then outside on a warm patio to acclimatise them to being out-doors, but be prepared to take then indoors if a cold night is forecast. Even in early June, a late frost is just possible so have some horticultural fleece handy just in case.

I have talked about being too eager, but being too late can also be detrimental. The longest day is around the 21st June, and until that time, most tender plants have a propensity to produce leaves and stems and develop a bushy habit. Once the longest day is passed, the emphasis slowly changes and plants are more likely to produce flowers (and fruit) at the expense of new growth. This is rather a generalisation and not a golden rule, but to get the very best from all your hanging baskets, patio planters and your summer bedding plants, try to get them all planted up by the middle of June at the latest. When plants are well established, they will be able to withstand a hot sunny spell so much better. I know; we haven't had one of those for what seems to be a very long time, but you never know! Thinking about Summer Holidays!

'A MAGICAL SHOW...PERFECT'

NOTTINGHAM POST

W

ith such a late start to spring this year, gardeners will now be in a hurry to catch up, but the timing of certain jobs is still very important. For example, in this area, tomato plants can be safely planted in an unheated greenhouse in early May. Any earlier and they will be in danger of receiving a check to their development as this only takes a couple of very cold nights. If you want to try your luck with tomatoes outside, then the first week of June is about right and not before. Cucumber plants are even more sensitive to cold and even in a greenhouse; I would leave planting these until towards the end of May.

COMPETITION

ummer holidays are on the way, if you are planning to go away with a furry friend this year then you should get down to the vet as soon as possible! The PETS travel scheme has been up and running now for several years, it is a way of being able to take your pets in and out of the country for holidays, whereas previously any animal entering Britain from abroad would have had to spend six months in quarantine. However, you have to ensure that all the requirements for the scheme are met or you could find your pet stranded!

4. The Kingswinford School

“We like to sing songs that mean something to us and mean something to the people listening to them, we want to make people think and we hope that our songs and lyrics do that.”

Since more and more friends and fans know the words and sing along, the band decided it was high time to record a six track EP featuring some of their favorite songs ‘Come What May’ which will be released this month.

RABIES & MICROCHIPPING

The most important part of the scheme is that your pet has to be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. The chip has to be in place before

“We always have a lot of fun on stage whether it’s at our local, the Cross Inn, Kinver or as far a field as The Vulcan in Cardiff, or the Narrowboat at the Middlewich Folk and Boat Festival. We’re very much looking forward to the Belbroughton beer festival later this year, it already looks like it will have a great line up!”

the vaccine but both can be done on the same day. A blood test is taken at least four weeks after the vaccination to measure the levels of rabies protection in the blood to ensure they are high enough. If they are not (and it is unusual for them not to be) the process will need to be repeated. Once a positive blood test has been confirmed the animal cannot come back into the country until 6 months AFTER the date of the blood test being taken. You can take them out at any time but you cannot bring them back in. This is why it is important to start the process at this time of year if you are planning to go away in the summer. Rabies boosters are required every 2 years.

A full set often incorporates 12 instruments including mandolin, guitar, cello and accordion as well as two and three part vocal harmony. So There is never a dull moment... especially if you’re their sound man!

You can find out more about the band, their up and coming gigs and even take a sneaky listen to a pre-release from the EP on the band's website and facebook page:

TICKS AND WORMS

All animals have to be treated against ticks and worms within 24 hours of returning to the UK and this treatment has to be verified by a vet. There are now vets set up at most of the border crossings to do this for you. This is very important as there are several parasites present on the Continent which aren’t in Britain, so we need to keep them out and they can cause serious disease in your pet

PET PASSPORT

All the information about your pet, their chip and vaccine

history are kept in a pet passport, which needs to be signed and stamped by an ‘official’ vets. Most practices will have at least one vet who is able to stamp passports. The passport can be stamped at any time once all the tests have been doneandconfirmed. It is both the vets and your responsibility that the passports are correctly filled out, if they are not you could be refused re-entry to Britain.

Taking your pet on holiday can be very rewarding for you both, but do consider it carefully before you decide to take them. The PETS scheme isn’t something undertaken lightly, there are a lot of requirements and it can be expensive. Also, going abroad is not risk free despite the vaccines and anti-parasite treatment, pets can pick up serious diseases. Consider as well the amount of travelling and the heat, especially for long coated breeds.

THE KINGSWINFORD SCHOOL

Above: The Kingswinford School students, Mr Baggott (centre) and England’s Olympic Silver Medalist Nathan Robertson (right).

Kingswinford School students represented the ‘West Midlands’ at the prestigious England Schools Badminton Championships, on Sunday 21st April at Centre Parcs, Nottingham.

An England Badminton Academy School since 2006, The Kingswinford School has been continually ranked as one of the top performing schools in the West Midlands, offering students the chance to compete at the highest level. Headteacher Bronwyn Hedley, said,

“We are absolutely delighted that our girl's team reached the England School Finals. Our students showed the dedication of true sportsmanship, practising relentlessly, aiming high and supporting and encouraging each other. The support our badminton players get from Mr Baggott, Sports Centre Manager, past students and volunteers such as Maureen South (who runs the community club Ashton Juniors) is simply stunning. We are so proud of them all and it is fantastic to see badminton at The Kingswinford School go from strength to strength.”

4

Centre Manager, Simon Baggott, said,

“As professional coach to the school team, I am extremely proud of how well the students performed at the England Schools Championships. Competition on the day was of the highest calibre and it gave me great pleasure to see The Kingswinford School girl’s team play amongst some of the best schools in the country and finish 9th out of the 6,140 school badminton teams that took part. This was a fantastic achievement for the pupils at The Kingswinford School and certainly put the Borough of Dudley and the Black Country high up there among the top performing schools in the country. The aim of being an academy school is to offer a clear pathway of development for students to be able to progress to the top, in whichever sports they favour and to also promote fit and healthy lifestyles”.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with

a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’

Cloudy2Clear service Kingswinford, Wordsley and Wall Heath areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of

business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

COMPUTERS

17 Digby Road, Kingswinford, West Midlands

Lots of items we own should get serviced at least once a year, for example; cars and the central heating boiler. The same is true for your computer. There are many factors that make your computer slower over time, thousands of temporary files, un-used or unwanted software and each year the anti-virus program gets more sophisticated. This all puts an extra burden on your computer and must be dealt with before it gets into a position where you can’t use it.

When it was new, it only took a few minutes to show the desktop, load the anti-virus software and it was ready to use, several years later it now takes 810 minutes before it is useable…

During a routine service maintenance the time can be dramatically reduced, which in turn lessens the stress on the computer helping to prolong its life. Any errors or problems can be highlighted and remedial action can be taken before it splutters to a halt.

Having a yearly service can improve the longevity and regain some of that lost speed. Don’t throw it out the window in frustration! Book a service. To contact Mike Brooks at PC Problems? please call 01384 571538

Many people across the world now use complementary and alternative medicine in addition to traditional or conventional treatments and therapies. Find out what alternative therapies could do for you.

Lakshmi Amarasingha RGN, BSc Nursing, Dip CFHP, MPSPract, Dip MAN Care (OU)

Conventional treatments can sometimes fail to produce the intended results for a patient provoking them to seek out kinder and gentler treatments and therapies to manage their diseases and health conditions, including pain. Opting for alternatives can often produce the same health outcomes without the side effects of drugs and treatments.

Lakshmi Amarasingha originally from Sri Lanka and working locally as a Nurse for many years, believes alternative therapy is the answer to many ailments. Having been diagnosed herself with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME) with no known cure, Lakshmi had to find a solution, having studied alternative therapies for many years Lakshmi has used her knowledge to treat herself and now looks unrecognisable from her ME days.

The Retreat

10

I met Lakshmi at ‘The Retreat’ her purpose built clinic in Wordsley which is adorned with mementos of her life in Sri Lanka and her travels to Kenya and beyond. There are photographs of Lakshmi meditating with monks and pictures drawn by people she has helped. The rooms are warm and welcoming, very private with views to the woodland behind. Here is where I would have my first experience of Lakshmi’s alternative therapy. Lakshmi was so welcoming and friendly I felt at ease from the moment I arrived, we immediately got chatting as she gave me a tour of her clinic.

Lakshmi then used her expertise to combine a mixture of therapies for me. The treatment lasted over an hour and it all made perfect sense, I felt like I was on a journey, travelling forward to a place that was bright with an end to anything bad or painful from the past. Following my treatment I was relaxed, calm and in control, the following day I had an abundance of energy and a feeling of real wellbeing and positivity. I found Lakshmi’s treatment to be inspiring and beneficial to my health. Something I would definately do again.

Lakshmi is able to successfully help people of all ages with a vast range of ailments from stress to chronic illness enabling them to use mind and body practices to affect physical functioning and promote good health. If you feel it is time for change in your life you can call Lakshmi on 01384 40 29 75 or 07796 13 57 80 to find out more.

?

NEW ‘ASK LAKSHMI’- The Villager Magazine will featuring a new health column in June, if you have any questions about your health or alternative therapies why not get in touch and Lakshmi will do her best to find the answer and print it in the next edition! Send your questions by e-mail to: asklakshmi@rocketmail.com or by post to: The Retreat 15 Kensington Gardens, Wordsley, West Midlands.

HORROR IN STORE AT WORDSLEY LIBRARY

Dudley Libraries will be celebrating their ‘Big Book Fortnight’ in May and are hoping to attract as many visitors as possible to their branches with special events throughout the two weeks.

Wordsley author Alan Smith, whose acclaimed fantasy trilogy ‘Harvester of the Now’ and his ghost stories have drawn praise from several best-selling authors including Anthony Horowtiz, Miranda Dickinson & G.P Taylor, will be appearing at Wordsley Library on the 16th of May to read one of his spine-tingling tales. “There is a real power in story-telling that is being forgotten in the age of the internet, this event is about re-awakening that tradition. I recommend anyone who loves a good scare to come along, and bring a sofa to hide behind!’

“Libraries are the hub of every community, a place you can enjoy from childhood to retirement and I am very happy to encourage everyone to make use of this valuable service.”

Since being published in 2006 Alan has worked to promote the importance of reading and writing amongst young offenders and to encourage them to take part in reading challenges. In 2013 Alan is promoting the 6 Book Challenge in a Young Offenders prison with former SAS soldier and best-selling author Andy McNab. Alan’s work with young offenders was highlighted by C4’s ‘Secret Millionaire’ programme when he was visited by Dragon’s Den star Piers Linney. Alan has also worked with the poet Mr Gee on the BBC Radio 4 programme ‘Poetic Justice.’

Alan’s work has been published in several magazines including the ground-breaking ‘Multi-Cultural.’

Alan is also a comedy writer and actor and has appeared in both of David Tristram’s‘Inspector Drake’ movies which have been screened at the London Independent Film Festival.

A

fter a year gigging up and down the country, Kinver band, Clutching At Straws, have decided it is about time to get some of their tracks onto disk.

Clutching At Straws is an alternative folk quartet with a melodic, acoustic sound. They write and perform songs about the world around them, retelling stories from life and challenging the status quo.

24

“We always have a lot of fun on stage whether it’s at our local, the Cross Inn, Kinver or as far a field as The Vulcan in Cardiff, or the Narrowboat at the Middlewich Folk and Boat Festival. We’re very much looking forward to the Belbroughton beer festival later this year, it already looks like it will have a great line up!”

A full set often incorporates 12 instruments including mandolin, guitar, cello and accordion as well as two and three part vocal harmony. So There is never a dull moment... especially if you’re their sound man!

You can find out more about the band, their up and coming gigs and even take a sneaky listen to a pre-release from the EP on the band's website and facebook page: www.strawsmusic.com www.facebook.com/ClutchingAtStraws

Thinking about Summer Holidays!

S

ummer holidays are on the way, if you are planning to go away with a furry friend this year then you should get down to the vet as soon as possible!

RABIES & MICROCHIPPING

The most important part of the scheme is that your pet has to be microchipped and vaccinated against rabies. The chip has to be in place before the vaccine but both can be done on the same day.

All the information about your pet, their chip and vaccine history are kept in a pet passport, which needs to be signed and stamped by an ‘official’ vets.

Cat is a local vet at Connaught House Vets in Kingswinford. If you have any concerns about a pet, you should always contact your vet.

Prince’s Trust Team Revamp

LOCAL COMMUNITY CENTRE

A popular community hall in Wordsley has been given a re-vamp thanks to students on a Prince’s Trust programme run by City of Wolverhampton College.

A total of 15 young people, aged 16 to 25, who participated in the 12-week team scheme in Netherton, took on the redecoration of the Richardson Hall in Lawnswood Road for a two week community project as part of their course. The students smartened up the main hall, kitchen and toilets of the centre with a new lick of paint after raising over £700 to buy decorating materials by packing bags for shoppers at a supermarket, braving a leg wax, and even being sponsored to sit in a bath of baked beans outside the hall!

Janet Blakeway, chair of Wordsley and District Community Association which manages the hall, said: “City of Wolverhampton College and the Prince’s Trust could have no finer students. For two weeks they sanded, masked, painted and cleaned to a really professional standard and their hard work, team spirit and sense of humour was greatly appreciated - we now have a hall that, once again, we can be proud of.”

The Prince’s Trust programme gives unemployed young people aged 16 to 25 the chance to improve their confidence and self-esteem, make new friends and learn new skills through a range of outdoor activities, community activities and work experience.

During the programme students take part in an action-packed residential week - getting involved in team building activities such as rock climbing, raft building and abseiling – as well as carrying out voluntary work in the community.

Participants also benefit from two weeks’ work experience with a local employer as well as help with job searches, producing a CV and interview skills.

The Team programme was launched by The Prince’s Trust in 1990 and City of Wolverhampton College has been delivering the course across the Black Country and Shropshire since September 2000. To date, over 2000 young people have attended schemes in Wolverhampton, Dudley, Walsall, Sandwell, Telford and Shrewsbury. Programmes start at regular intervals in all locations throughout the year. For more details visit www.wolvcoll.ac.uk/princestrust or contact The Prince’s Trust office at the college on 01902 821906.
