Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Brian Stanley feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with

a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’

Cloudy2Clear service Kingswinford, service all of the Wordsley and Wall Villager Magazine Heath areas and Brian areas and Brian is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of

business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Brian a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

NEW LOOK

FOR KINVER 10K RUN THE ANNUAL 10K RUN

(and its associated 2k fun run) organised by the Rotary Club of Kinver is to have a new look – it is to start and finish in the magnificent grounds of Enville Hall, and it is to include an off-road section through the grounds of the Enville Estate.

The course will therefore remain challenging, including the usual Kinver district hills which have featured in the previous on-road only events, that have raised well over £30,000 for the Action Heart charity since the first run in 2007. Pensnett accident repair centre BodyKraft is again the main sponsor of the entire event, but a number of other local businesses are also giving support. For the first time the 2k race is being organised in conjunction with the Kinver Fitness Collective and will be a fun run for all abilities and ages and cover the first section of the senior course. John Gillett, Chairman of the organising committee is hoping the new look to the races will attract even more runners than in previous years. He says: “We are indebted to Peter and Diana Williams for allowing us to use the grounds of Enville Hall as our base for the event. “They have been constant supporters of the club since it was founded 30 years ago and granting us access to the grounds and the estate lands will bring an exciting new feel to the run. Furthermore, the fact that the new route includes off road sections will add another dimension which we hope will appeal to additional runners.” This year’s event is being held on Sunday, October 4 with entry available via the action heart website www.actionheartrunning.com

NEW PRESIDENT FOR KINVER ROTARY CLUB

FORMER CHIEF EXECUTIVE ROY SANDERS has become only the second member to become President of the Rotary Club of Kinver for a second term.

Mr Sanders, of Troutbeck Drive, Lakeside, is one of just six remaining founder members of the club, which was formed 30 years ago. He was president in 1994 and has also undertaken the roles of secretary and treasurer a number of times over the three decades. Prior to his retirement as Managing Director of Wild Manufacturing in Birmingham he worked in financial management at Ratcliffs of Great Bridge and Round Oak Steel in Brierley Hill – in fact he still organises reunions of colleagues who worked together before the closure of the firm.

IS YOUR COMPUTER

AS FAST

AS YOU THOUGHT IT WOULD BE? COMPUTER specs and speeds can be very confusing to understand, but the plain truth is that computers are never as fast as the advertisement makes you believe! Like any device it is only as fast as the slowest component, which in computers happens to be the hard drive. Hard Drive storage capacity has increased dramatically in the last 5 years, but hard drive speed leaves much to be desired, especially in laptops where the hard drive is miniaturised for size and power consumption.

PC Problems?

SOLID STATE DRIVES TO THE RESCUE!

SSD’s are now becoming much more affordable, and installation of one will make a huge difference to the speed and usability of PC’s and laptops. SSD’s are like a large USB memory pen they have no moving parts, which makes them up to 10 times faster than a normal mechanical hard drive, but like all miracles there are compromises, the storage capacity of a SSD is limited, typically around 128Gb. You can keep and re-use your existing hard drive as storage space in Tower PC’s, but laptops only have space for one. It’s not just a simple case of plug one in and go, the SSD will need to have Windows and all of the software you use installed, before it can be used, but the difference is literally something to behold. If you are thinking of buying a new PC or laptop soon, it’s definitely something to have and if your current computer needs a boost, this would be the answer.

Local Air Scout Leader

WINS AWARD

GAVIN WILLIAMSON, MP FOR SOUTH STAFFORDSHIRE, attended the SSCVA Celebration Event which recognised the important of volunteering to support the most vulnerable in society. The event which took place at Trinity Methodist Church in Codsall this weekend celebrated the achievements of volunteers across South Staffordshire.

Gavin is a patron of the SSCVA and this was the third time Gavin has supported their Celebration Event. The day also saw the presentation of the Gavin Williamson MP Award, which recognised a volunteer that had gone the extra mile in supporting a particular group or person in South Staffordshire. This year the award went to Karl Owen of Halfpenny Green Air Scouts for his devotion to the group over the past 5 years. Karl has built the membership of the Beavers and Cub divisions from 20 to 96 members and the number continues to rise. Under Karl’s leadership the Scout Hut was refurbished, with new carpets, toilets, kitchen and computer suite installed, along with a shooting and archery range transforming the Air Scout Group’s environment. Gavin said: “I am a huge supporter of the many volunteer groups that we have in South Staffordshire and I’m immensely proud of the work that they do to support our communities and the most vulnerable in society. The celebration event showed how lucky we are to have so many truly amazing people in South Staffordshire. “It was so difficult to choose a winner from the all the dedicated nominees who selflessly contribute so much to society, however the nominations I received for Karl Owen really showed what it was to be a truly devoted volunteer. Karl gives up his weekends to support team members and his leadership has not only built up membership but transformed the Scout Hut, giving young people an experience that will appreciate for the rest of their lives. I would like to congratulate Karl on his well-deserved award and thanks the SSCVA for the fantastic work they do across South Staffordshire.”

Feel good and sound great with

ROCK CHOIR REAL-LIFE EXPERIENCES OF LOCAL ROCK CHOIR MEMBERS IN STOURBRIDGE, KIDDERMINSTER, REDDITCH AND BROMSGROVE show that singing with the nation’s favourite contemporary choir can help boost your health and wellbeing.

Singing in a choir is scientifically proven to make you feel better. For example, research by the University of Gothenburg found that choir members’ heartbeats synchronise when they sing, thereby creating a calming effect. As well as helping people relax there are indications that this provides a heart benefit. Local Rock Choir Leader Christa Hugo runs choirs in Stourbridge, Kidderminster, Redditch and Bromsgrove. Many of her members have shared their own personal experiences of how being in Rock Choir has benefited them. “Singing really brings people together and makes them feel good, especially when it’s in a friendly, supportive environment like Rock Choir,” says Christa. “It’s amazing and a real privilege to watch people’s confidence grow and hear how much it’s changed their lives.”

SUE WILKES & JAN PARTRIDGE “Myself, my mum, her partner and my uncle are all in Rock Choir, so it’s definitely a family thing,” says Aimee White of Stourbridge Rock Choir. “I’ve always loved to sing and dance, but my confidence has really grown since joining. Over time I built up the nerve to try for a solo and managed to sing to the choir without having my back to them. A year later I’ve performed six solos at three different locations. Thank you Rock Choir for changing my life!” As well as all the personal benefits enjoyed by its members, Rock Choir also immerses itself in local communities and charities – raising tens of thousands of pounds each year to support many different causes. One local charity supported by Christa’s choir members is the Wombourne Special Needs Support Group WINGS, set up by Stourbridge Rock Choir member Nan Flavell.

Jan Partridge of Bromsgrove Rock Choir contracted meningitis twice within six months and considers being in Rock Choir a huge help to her recovery:

“Nan helped set up WINGS to support children with special needs and their families,” explains Christa. “It’s a wonderful charity and we’ve been proud to support it on a number of occasions by giving fundraising performances.”

“The road to recovery has been tough and Rock Choir has really helped me in so many ways – building my confidence, lifting my spirits and meeting so many wonderful people who love a good sing song,” says Jan. “I broke my ankle recently and getting back into the dance moves has actually helped my rehabilitation!”

THE PEOPLE’S CHOIR Rock Choir welcomes everyone. There are no auditions and no need to read music or have any previous singing experience. Members attend weekly rehearsals in their local community, building up to performances at local and national events.

As well as the feel good factor of singing, the camaraderie and family atmosphere are a big part of Rock Choir’s appeal. In fact many choirs include different generations of the same family.

start your next adventure at Kinver Edge & Rock Houses Saturday 26th September, 11am – 4pm

LOOKING FOR YOUR NEXT ADVENTURE? COME TO OUR VOLUNTEER RECRUITMENT fair to find out how you can put years of skills and experience towards our cause, or try your hand at something brand new. Whether you love to share stories, want to get your hands dirty, bring history to life for our younger visitors or really enjoy making the perfect cuppa – we’ll find a place for you. There’s a great variety of roles here, and you can learn about them all at our recruitment fair. Staff will be on hand to explain the training we can offer you to get you started, and you can meet our existing volunteers to find out from them what it’s like to be part of the team.

16

volunteer Marian Paterson Marian Paterson, gives her take on volunteering “I started volunteering with the National Trust ten months ago. Having recently retired, I was concerned that I would struggle to find an activity that would provide me with new challenges, without the pressure of a new career. I wasn’t a member of the NT and had no idea about who the Trust wanted as volunteers. Making the decision to respond to their advertisement turned out to be one of the best things I have done since retiring. The people I met at both the Kinver Rock Houses and Clent Hills were so welcoming I had no hesitation in becoming a volunteer. From that time I have had a very active, fun 10 months. I have been involved in stewarding, helping in the tea rooms, working with education groups, assisting with family events as well as taking part in the recent Bio Blitz and Kinver Fayre. In addition, the Trust have provided me with a variety of training opportunities, ranging from First Aid to Rag Rug and Besom Broom making, as well as Archaeology, Nature ID walks and courses in Bushcraft. There is no expectation from the Trust regarding a minimum amount of hours for volunteers - the choice is yours. The most important thing I have found from volunteering with the Trust is that anyone can become a volunteer. Whatever your age, skills or interests, the Trust will value the time you give so give it a go.”

Our volunteer roles vary from helping in the garden, tea-room and Rock Houses, to joining us as events assistants or countryside rangers. We are also starting an archive project that will need researchers to help us learn more about the history of this fascinating place. Helen Selkirk, Community Engagement Officer says “For many of our volunteers, what they love about spending time with us is making connections – with the history of the Rock Houses, with our visitors, the incredible landscape, and the other volunteers. Meeting us at the Recruitment Fair is a great way to make that first connection, and see where volunteering could take you.” Over the years volunteers have been fundamental to the management and care of Kinver Edge, helping with projects such as the reconstruction of the chimneys on the Martindale’s Rock House, and designing the education programme that we run with schools. There are opportunities for you to shape our work and learn skills that could help you in a future career. However, if you are just looking for somewhere to spend a Saturday afternoon, doing a spot of weeding or serving up a slice of cake, you are equally welcome to join the team.

PLANNING

for a better FINANCIAL FUTURE

By JPA

Financial Services Ltd

IF YOU ARE PLANNING for a better financial future in retirement we have identified four actions which may help you create that plan. 1. BE REALISTIC ABOUT YOUR RETIREMENT ASPIRATIONS. Retirement can offer many choices. Decide what kind of retirement you want and be honest with yourself about how much it will cost. 2. REVIEW YOUR LONG TERM WORKING PLANS. Consider at what age you can realistically afford to fully retire, and if you expect to semi-retire or keep working for longer. 3. CONSIDER YOUR WIDER FINANCIAL COMMITMENTS. Providing financial support for family members – your partner or spouse, your children, your ageing parents – may be a reality through your working life and into your retirement. Consider your own and your family’s long-term financial needs, and make sure to include both in your retirement planning. 4. HAVE A CLEAR RETIREMENT PLAN. Consider how you will fund your retirement and don’t bank on receiving an inheritance. Make sure you have a realistic financial plan in place and seek professional financial advice if you need help.

What’s Special about JPA?

DOUBLE DELIGHT FOR PLANTS LOVERS

SEPTEMBER brings the last two plant fairs of 2015. Saturday 5th September sees a return visit to the popular fair at Bodenham Arboretum.

If your garden is looking a little tired after the summer then this is a great opportunity to find some late blooming plants to cheer it up! Autumn is also the perfect time to plant, ready for next year’s bloom. The soil is still warm and plants have plenty of time to establish and make themselves at home before winter. The nursery folk will be more than happy to give you the benefit of their experience in planting and caring for the plants you buy so you can get the best from them. Entry to this plant fair is completely free. The lakeside restaurant will be open serving refreshments. Visitors can explore the 156 acre Arboretum at normal prices if they wish. The fair opens at 11am and closes at 5pm. Bodenham Arboretum is situated three miles north of Kidderminster. Follow the brown signs "Bodenham Arboretum" westwards from Wolverley Church Island along the B4189. The season closes with a new Autumn Plant at the grand setting of Weston Park on Sunday 13th September. The setting is a thousand acres within a glorious setting and visitors can explore the formal gardens, enjoy the woodland walks and walled gardens and there is an adventure playground for the kids. The plant fair is held on the Diary Green and there will be a great range of nurseries and artisans. Plant Hunters’ Fairs have arranged a staggeringly low entry price of just £2.50 for the fair, gardens and grounds. Visitors to the fair can also shop for locally produced food and drink in the Farm Shop and enjoy light refreshments or lunch in the Granary Grill, Bar & Restaurant. The fair opens at 10am and closes at 4pm. The House will also be open from 1pm (extra charge) so why not visit and take a look at the fabulous art collection and learn more about the history of the estate. Weston Park is in Weston-under-Lizard near Shifnal and is on the A5 just off the A41.

GARDENING BY MARTIN BLOW

desirable daisies

FOR THE LAWN-PROUD GARDEN OWNER daisies are weeds to be fought with and removed at all costs. For the flower gardener the daisy family are one of the glories of summer and the most desirable flowering plants. From low growing carpeters to 8ft giants for the back of the border there is a daisy for every garden. This month I’ll share some of my favourites from my own garden with you.

CALLIOPE

Technically daisies are members of the Aster (or Michaelmas daisy) family and all have rayed petals and a disc or cone at the centre and all share the same attractiveness to bees and butterflies. Let’s start with Asters, those late bloomers that come in a range of colours from white, through pink, lavender to the dark purple. The best of these is the variety ‘MÔNCH’, which blooms from August and never gets mildew. I also love the tall growing ‘CALLIOPE’ who has black stems, glossy leaves and flowers in October and November. Asters need a reasonably sunny spot and soil that holds some moisture - so mulch them well in spring. For brighter colours you can’t do better than Heleniums – one of my passions. We hold the National Collection and have a good range in our catalogue. These are certainly sun lovers and come in shades of red, orange and yellow. Perhaps best known as tall plants for the back of the border blooming in August and September there are also some new, shorter ones that start flowering in late June: ‘RED ARMY’ is bright red and 2ft (60cm) tall and ‘MARDI GRAS’ is a similar height with flowers that blend red, orange and yellow. ‘SAHIN’S EARLY FLOWERER’ has similar flowers but is nearly 3ft tall. ‘EL DORADO’ is one of the best new varieties with large golden yellow flowers. He is about 2ft 6in tall (75cm) but doesn’t need staking. ‘FLAMING KATY’ is taller and a fiery orange-red.

GOLDSTURM

26

EL DORADO

Two closely related plants are commonly known as Cone Flowers: the pink or white Echinaceas and the yellow Rudbeckias. In our garden we find the old varieties are more reliable than the many new ones. For Echinacea I recommend ‘RUBY STAR’ (bright pink) and ‘WHITE SWAN’ and for Rudbeckias the soundly perennial ‘DEAMII’ and ‘GOLDSTURM’. For a really tall one try Herbstsonne ‘AUTUMN SUN’, which will grow 6ft (180cm) tall. The yellow rudbeckias will also grow well in dappled shade.

‘We all loved growing sunflowers as kids’

HAPPY DAYS

We all loved growing sunflowers as kids and there are some less tall perennial types to choose for the garden. Their flowers are smaller but very numerous. ‘HAPPY DAYS’ is only 3ft (90cm) tall with large flowers whereas ‘LEMON QUEEN’ will get to 6ft (180cm) tall and has masses of pale yellow flowers in autumn. Some are scented – the variety ‘BITTER CHOCOLATE’ smells exactly like that!

Coreopsis (common name Tickseed) are popular low-growing plants but some are not hardy here. We grow the reliable ZAGREB and the beautiful pale yellow MOONBEAM as these are hardy for us. These will spread to form a good sized clump and are easy to divide in spring.

There’s sure to be a member of daisy family to suit your garden; keep your eyes open for those lovely flowers.

SHASTA DAISIES (Leucanthemum) were once common cottage garden plants and they are making a comeback as gardeners remember just how easy and reliable they are. Most are white although there are a few pale yellow varieties to be had. My favourite is ‘BEAUTÉ NIVELLOISE’ which one cheeky customer renamed ‘bad hair day’ after the wayward look of the petals. ‘FIONA COGHILL’ has large, ball-shaped flowers that remind me of a florist’s Chrysanthemum. Shasta Daisies love a well-drained sunny spot and will survive drought well.

WHITE SWAN

SHASTA DAISIES

AND ECHINACEAS

We are used to buying African Daisies (Osteospermum) as half-harder summer bedding but there are a few winter hardy ones to find. The white ‘LADY LEITRIM’ has been in my family’s gardens for at least four generations and always survives even the hardest winter provided the soil is well-drained. She will flower from May to early winter. There’s sure to be a member of daisy family to suit your garden; keep an eye open for those lovely flowers.
