Enjoy a Massage

Massage therapy (and, in general, the laying on of hands for health purposes) dates back thousands of years. References to massage have been found in ancient writings from many cultures, including those of Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, Japan, China, Egypt, and the Indian subcontinent.

There are over 80 types of massage therapy. In all of them, therapists press, rub, and otherwise manipulate the muscles and other soft tissues of the body, often varying pressure and movement. They most often use their hands and fingers, but may use their forearms, elbows, or feet. Typically, the intent is to relax the soft tissues, increase delivery of blood and oxygen to the massaged areas, warm them, and decrease pain. People use massage for a wide variety of health-related intents: for example, to relieve pain (often from musculoskeletal conditions, but from other conditions as well); rehabilitate sports injuries; reduce stress; increase relaxation; address feelings of anxiety and depression; and aid general wellness. In Swedish massage, the therapist uses long strokes, kneading and friction on the muscles and moves the joints to aid flexibility.

Pets

Lets talk about sex! Written by Cat Henstridge BVSc MRCVS

PLEASE excuse the title, I couldn't resist! As it is February and the traditional month of love, I thought it would be appropriate to talk about reproduction and neutering in our pets. It is a sad fact but there are far too many unwanted pets in this country and every year thousands are put to sleep because they can't find homes. All responsible pet owners should have their animals neutered; it is safer, fairer and healthier than leaving them entire. So, this article is really about the procedure of neutering in different pets, what it entails and why it is a good idea.

FEMALE DOGS

In bitches neutering involves the complete removal of both the ovaries and the uterus. As the vet enters the abdomen it is a 'major' surgery, however it is also a routine one and the huge majority of young, healthy dogs come through it fine. The ideal time to spay is either before the first season, at about 6-9 months old, or 3 months after a bitch has cycled when the hormones are dormant and the uterus is small and inactive. Spaying a bitch significantly lowers the risk of mammary cancer, eliminates uterine and ovarian cancer and the condition 'Pyometra' where the uterus fills with pus. You also don't have the mess and bother of the bitch being in season every 6 months.

MALE DOGS

In male dogs compared to females the health benefits of castration are less marked but as the testicles are removed there is no risk of testicular cancer and the chances of prostate problems are lowered. Neutered male dogs also tend to be calmer, happier, more biddable and rarely display hyper-sexual behaviour. The procedure is quick and simple; it involving the complete removal of the testicles. It can be performed from 6 months of age onwards.

FEMALE CATS

Spaying a female cat is vital, without it she will definitely get pregnant, even an 'indoor' cat will fight to get out when she is cycling. The operation is generally performed through the side of the abdomen and takes less than 30 minutes. It also involves the complete removal of the ovaries and uterus. It should be done at 6 months of age.

Did you know

?

MALE CATS

Neutering male cats is vital for their health and well-being. The average age of a castrated male cat is 18 years but for an entire male it is only 8 years. Entire males are far more likely to wander and fight, meaning they are often injured, run over or contract the feline diseases of Aids or Leukaemia. Castration is quick, taking 20 minutes at the most, safe and cheap, so there is no excuse not to!

Ginger cats are predominantly male but female ones do exist but they are unusual

RABBITS

Both male and female rabbits should be neutered. It makes both sexes much calmer and easier to handle and less likely to fight between themselves. Also, a large proportion of female rabbits will suffer from uterine cancer in later life, which spaying will prevent. Cat is the resident vet for the social networking site for pet lovers; www.petstreet.co.uk If you are ever concerned about a pet, you should always contact your vet for advice.

Advanced City & Guilds Groomers Celebrate 25 Years in Business Allbreed Grooming Academy Ltd

Mark Davies the MD and owner of Allbreed Grooming Academy Ltd based at High Oak, Pensnett, told me how his love of animals began at an early age when he started showing dogs before moving on to judging shows and later Competitive Obedience with his two Border Collies.

During his early years Mark had a number of dogs including Cavaliers, King Charles Spaniels, Shelties and German Spits he showed Afghan Hounds for clients which gained him valuable experience in all aspects of the dog grooming world. Marks love of dogs and grooming soon became a passion and over the last 25 years he has built up a loyal clientele base with over 2000 customers.

Mark said “We are held in the highest esteem by vets, our salon and facilities are second to none. Our grooming and drying room are SO STYLISH fully air conditioned and all have electric tables. We are members of the Pet Care Trust and The British Grooming Association. When dogs are in our care they are all fully insured.” Mark continued “The business has gone from strength to strength, I have a grooming team that are all City & Guilds Level 2 qualified, we are all dedicated and pride ourselves in providing the highest standard of care to all pets from the very small to the very large.” Mark who is head groomer has over 28 years experience, gaining Diplomas in Advanced City & Guilds grooming and holds the 7750 qualification. MAIN STOCK ISTS OF THE JA MES WELLBELOVED RANGE OF FOOD

So what happens when you leave your dog at Allbreed Grooming I asked?

“Once you leave your dog you know it is in safe hands,” said Mark “Grooming is our lives and we are passionate to provide the best results for your dogs. While in our care you dog will receive a full MOT which includes a health check, this is how we get to know your dog and build up a rapport, we check for any problematic areas such as lumps, bumps, skin sores etc. We then pre clip to the style or to TOP DOG FACILITIES breed standard, nails /feet and groin are trimmed, ears are cleaned and then your dog is moved into the wet room. We bathe your dog in top hypo-allergenic shampoos which are kind to the most sensitive of skins or if your dog requires a special shampoo supplied by your vet you are welcome to bring that along for us to use. Conditioner is then used on breeds which require it and a final rinse to make sure all shampoo is removed. Excess water is then removed using towels or massage with the blaster dryer for larger dogs. Then to completely dry your dog top of the range dryers are used which are kind to your pet which include stand and cabinet dryers. Once dry your dog has a small rest, we feel this is important as it helps make grooming an enjoyable experience for them. Next your dog will be taken through to the grooming area where their final styling is carried out. Once you are happy with your dogs final style ‘his or her cologne’ is applied to add the finishing touch.”

SO HANDSOME

Your dog will go home looking a million dollars and all this at an affordable price. Allbreed Grooming operate a booking only service so it is essential to book early to get a day you prefer. Don’t delay phone today!

GOOD VALUE FOR MONEY, TAILOR MADE SUITES & SOFAS

Signature sofas, is a family run business, who have been trading for over 25 years.

I visited Signature Sofa’s, to view their extensive range of sofas and suites. With 28 sofa designs to choose from in modern, classic and traditional designs I was spoiled for choice. I enjoyed the opportunity to browse the showroom at my leisure and just asked for help if I needed to. Once I had chosen my sofa design I was offered the choice of any of the huge range of fabrics or leather, with so many to choose from I was able to perfectly match my new sofa to my decor. It couldn’t have been easier or more affordable and my new suite was delivered on time and placed in my lounge as promised, it was exactly what I had asked for.

I have happily been able to recommend family and friends to visit the showroom, they have all appreciated the hassle free service, and liked the fact that there are ‘no gimmicks’, just good value for money, tailor made quality suites and sofas.

Top Tip! Measure doorways and tight corners to make sure your new sofa can enter your home with ease

Homes & Gardens

It is a Chill Wind.... Written by Philip Baulk of Ashwood Nurseries Ltd

We are now well over a month since the shortest day, and as the days get ever so slowly longer, gardeners can look forward to spring with keen anticipation. Green shoots are already appearing above ground as early bulbs like snowdrops, crocus and narcissus begin their annual cycle of growth, and a few milder days now will soon accelerate their development. As I write, the snow has gone for now, but it could so easily return as could the really cold nights. In itself, snow can be beneficial to low-growing plants, covering them with a natural layer of insulation, but it is the hard frosts coupled with icy cold winds that can cause the most damage, especially to evergreen plants. January saw a succession of exceedingly cold nights with temperatures as low as minus 14 Celsius locally. At these temperatures, many of our less hardy plants will not survive. In the last two decades, we have experienced relatively mild winters, and many gardeners have been tempted to grow many plants, especially shrubs, which they would never have considered in earlier times. Broad-leaf evergreens are particularly vulnerable because a frozen ground together with chilly winds can cause severe dehydration. Frozen roots are unable to replace moisture that is being lost above ground, so damage is almost inevitable. A great way to protect plants is to wrap them in horticultural fleece, but it does need to be in place before the cold weather sets in. It allows some air to pass through as well as letting light through, so it can stay in place for weeks if necessary. Polythene, on the other hand, does not really protect from cold, and causes a lot of condensation, so it may end up causing more damage in the long run. Just before Christmas, I tied up all the foliage on my container grown cordylines to protect the growing point, and moved them as close as I could to the house wall. They look rather strange but in most winters, this is sufficient protection. Whether it will be this year, well, we shall just have to wait and see. ,% -&& -/ %'2*!/ !/$%, !),1%,!,#% I still remember very clearly the winter of 3%/'/-4, !/$%, *%!/!,#% 1981. The moral of this story? - If you do think a plant has succumb to the cold, don't be too hasty to dig it out. The leaves and top

ARCTIC ADVENTURE NEEDS YOUR HELP

This march Chris Mason from Cherry Tree Road, Kingswinford will be battling against the Arctic elements and other teams in the far reaches of Norway, to raise money for the Prince’s Trust in an Arctic Adventure Challenge. Chris said “By signing up for the trip I have pledged to raise a minimum of £3,500 for the charity that works with people aged 19 to 25, providing practical and financial support to help them move into work, education or training.”

Chris continued “Until the end of November 2009 I was in this category. Finding myself unemployed, with 3 A-levels it seemed there was nowhere to turn as I was unsure about further education.”

“It was through a friend of mine, Dan Phillip, that I discovered this challenge. After finding himself in the same situation after seven months of unemployment, he was looking through the Princes Trusts motivational courses when he came across a list of their upcoming challenges. This is how we came to be part of the Arctic Adventure Challenge. Not only did we both now have a goal over the next few months but it will also aid people who are in similar situations to the ones we have been in.” Chris and Dan’s teamwork will be tested to its limits in a series of competitive events, including dog sledding, lassoing reindeer and team long skiing, which will involve racing along a 2km course with up to six people all sharing a single pair of rather long skis! Over six days they will travel more than 250km on snowmobiles, 30km on skis and 65km by dog sled. In temperatures as low as -30 C, the challenge will be both mentally and physically exhausting. But before that, and just as demanding, they will be meeting some tough fundraising targets.

Chris and Dan rose over £1000 in just over a week to meet the Prince’s Trust’s first test of their fundraising skills last month. This was thanks to the support of family and friends, plus some sponsored car washing. The next milestone is to increase the charity pot by another £4,000 before 16 February. Then they are tasked to finally boost the total to a minimum of £7,000 by 26 April. To meet these targets, Chris and Dan are now appealing to the generosity of the community and local businesses.

“With unemployment as it is in the West Midlands at the moment (one of the highest in the country) The Princes Trust are one of the few charities actively seeking to help young people who are struggling to get back on their feet. Having been in this situation, I know how hard it can be at times, but hopefully, with as much support as possible we can help.” Said Chris

If you are able to help by making a donation please visit their fund raising page www.shooting-blind.co.nr For more information about how they are doing with the challenge so far, Dan is writing a blog which is updated regularly danjourney.blogspot.com
