DEDICATE A LIGHT IN MEMORY OF SOMEONE SPECIAL

Brierley Hill Methodist Church and Brierley Hill & Kingswinford Rotary Club are remembering loved ones this Christmas with a Tree Of Lights. The tree, holding more than 500 lights, is situated in the church grounds in Bank Street, Brierley Hill. The lights were switched on as part of a carol service held on Sunday, 6th December and the tree will be lit throughout the Christmas season. There’s still time for you to dedicate a light in memory of someone special. Each light costs £5 and the name of your loved one will be displayed in the church grounds for all to see. All profits from this venture will go to local and Methodist charities.

If you’d like to remember someone and help a charity at the same time, application forms can be picked up from the Age Concern shop in Mill Street, Brierley Hill 01384 265064 or by contacting Richard Rogerson 07930 194093 or Simon Head 07985 182261

A night out at The Kingswinford Beefeater

The Kingswinford Beefeater is situated on the main Dudley Road in Kingswinford, opposite the main entrance to Pensnett Trading Estate, next door to it’s own Premier Inn. Built in 1998 then fully refurbished to the new style in November 2007 it’s a welcoming place to eat, drink & sleep.

Outside the 200 space car park means there is no shortage of spaces. Inside there are leather chairs Sally, and relaxed seating in the bar, whilst in the restaurant there is booth seating suitable for intimate dining or family tables for about ten people. Being mostly a dining venue the brand new restaurant has 280 covers! A separate function room is available for private hire for all occasions and Children are welcome in the restaurant when you dine or until 9pm in the bar. There is an ATM Machine and Debit & Credit Cards are accepted. Draught beers include Becks Bier, Carling, Carlsberg, Heineken, Stella, Boddingtons Smooth, Guinness and Strongbow Cider plus 2 Guest ales which regularly change. A great range of wines and soft drinks are also available or if you proffer something hot you can opt for tea or Costa coffee. With Christmas approaching Mulled wine is also on the menu which really hits the spot on these cold evenings.

Tara, Robbie & Sue getting comfy in the Premier Inn I met up with a group of friends, to dine at The Kingswinford Beefeater, it had been recommended to us, so we decided we would sample as many different dishes from the menu as we could and tell Villager readers our verdict.

We ordered our drinks after being shown to our table and studied the menu. Beefeaters passion is char grilling steaks, but we found a good choice on the menu with something to suit everyone, including chicken, fish and lamb grills as well as fabulous salads and pastas and a selection of vegetarian options. Meal deals are available during the day with 2 courses from £7.95 and in the evening with 2 courses from £9.95. From the main menu Starters are available from £2.99, main meals from £7.99 and desserts from £3.60

We placed our vast order with ease and waited for our feast to arrive. All the food at The Kingswinford Beefeater is freshly prepared and cooked to your liking, but we didn’t have to wait long before plate after plate appeared piping hot on the table. All of the meals were presented excellently, (as you will see pictured around these pages). I had to stop the girls digging in before we had taken the photographs, it all looked so tasty.

Our order consisted of most of the meats and fish available on the menu which included starters of a dipping bread trio and a Beefeater combo, Main courses included Duck, Lobster, Sea Bass, Steak, Chicken, Lamb, Sausages, Quesadilla Wrap and Pork Ribs. Everything was amazing we couldn’t fault it. As we were taste testing ‘we had to order desserts’ it would have been rude not to! We managed to find room to share Profiteroles and Chocolate Fudge Cake yum!

We all agreed our taste testing evening was a success, the food, atmosphere and service were all excellent and we would happily return for another evening out.

Taster Sue

Our tasty verdict?

We get cracking with our taste testing

We sneaked a peek.......

As none of us had stayed at the Premier Inn Kingswinford before we left we asked if we could sneak a peek at the rooms. They were happy to let us have a look but could only show us one room as they were full! The room was clean and spacious with comfy surroundings, everything you would need for a good nights sleep, really handy if you don’t have the room to put up all of your guests this Christmas or if you fancy a night out without having to journey home. One night stays start from only £29, there are family rooms with sofa beds and interconnecting rooms if required. Very nice.

Left to right Maria O ' Ryan (sos representative) Alex & Dale, Lesley Aimes & Nick Owen

Dale Leach a soldier who was seriously injured while serving in Afghanistan is celebrating the end of ‘a year from hell’ - after winning the Chocorococo & Support Our Soldiers Wedding competition which featured in The Villager Magazine. Dale 23 and his fiancée Alex Lewis have chosen Sunday August 8th 2010, as their wedding day. They will tie the knot in the Banqueting Suite at The Birmingham Council House, a presentation was held for them on Tuesday 17th November and following a speech from organiser Lesley there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. Everyone agreed they were well deserved winners and a wonderful couple. Dale, a DMR (Drummer) in the 1st Battalion Welsh Guards has been serving for 5 years and has been on various tours. In May of this year he was posted out to Afghanistan. and was hit by an improvised explosive device in June while on patrol. He lost his left leg, had his skull fractured, broke his back in three places, punctured both his lungs and shattered his right heel. He was flown back to the UK and taken to Birmingham's Selly Oak Hospital where he spent several weeks in intensive care before his rehabilitation could start. Dale is currently receiving treatment at Headley Court, a military rehabilitation unit in Surrey. He uses a prosthetic leg five hours a week as he continues his recovery, and is allowed home every other weekend. Alex, 22, said: "I have a smile on my face for the first time in seven months."

I was screaming down the phone when I found out we’d won. "Dale’s been through so much, it’s been a year from hell. It was touch and go for a while after the explosion, but thankfully he pulled through.” As winners of the Chocorococo & SOS Wedding Competition, Alex and Dale can look forward to a package worth thousands of pounds which includes everything for their dream day. The competition was the brainchild of Lesley and Daniel Aimes, owners of Stourbridgebased chocolate fountain company Chocorococo, who brought together firms to supply everything on the day, including the wedding dress, bridesmaids dresses, rings, a wedding car, hair stylists, jewellery, a photographerHoneymoon in Paris a total prize of approximately £18,000. Lesley said: "We are proud of our serving men and women and this is our way of showing appreciation for everything they do. "We had hundreds of entries, but Dale and Alex’s story was so moving, it was a landslide winner with the judging panel.” "Alex has proved to be a tower of strength to Dale, being at his bedside whenever possible, looking after their little girl Ellie as well as expecting another child in January, and being supportive to other injured soldiers in Headley Court, who do not have their families around them.” "We are working in conjunction with the Support Our Soldiers charity which offers support to soldiers and their families," added Lesley. “We aim to make this a day the couple will never forget."

Nicola Bradbury from Sandpipers, Kingswinford (pictured above with Stylist Sarah from Styles by Mel in Park Street, Kingswinford) was the lucky winner of a cut & blow dry after entering The Villager competition. During a stay in hospital Nicola entered a few competitions and was over the moon to receive a letter telling her she was the winner of a new hair do. Nicola was delighted with the result and said “I have never won anything before, it was a nice suprise.”

What do you get for the pet who has everything?! Cat Henstridge BVSc MRCVS

Christmas time is upon us again and it is

time for the dreaded Christmas shopping! It is very few peoples idea of fun, trying to find a suitable present for Great Aunt Flo and all those cousins you barely see, and sometimes it is hardly less stressful buying the right thing for out nearest and dearest. But what about the animals in our lives? Sure there are plenty of pre-packaged 'treat stockings' out there, but these are not very original and are calorie packed. So, how about buying something they will actually enjoy and be useful?

DOGS Dogs are active, inquisitive, intelligent creatures and many are left alone for periods during the day, or are not given enough to keep them occupied. This can lead to them becoming bored which can cause behavioural issues. So, the best toys for dogs are ones which keep them busy and entertained. Many dogs love to chew but some are experts at reducing chew treats to nothing in record time! Products like the Nylabone chews are excellent as they are virtually indestructible, are scented which keeps the dog interested and come in various sizes so can withstand even the strongest jaws! Another good toy for dogs is the 'treat puzzle' kind. These are usually hollow rubber chew toys which can be

stuffed with kibble or treats. The dog has to play, roll, throw and chew the toy to get the biscuits out. They will only get one every so often, so these can keep them interested for hours. They are also a good way of making them 'work' for their food, particularly important for those a little broad about the beam! The best of these are the 'Kong' range. It is also important to know what not to buy for your pet. For example, terrier breeds love nothing more than to 'kill' their toys and will rip a nice, soft plush teddy to pieces in no time. Better for them are the 'tugger' rope type toys which can withstand a huge amount of abuse and still survive!

CATS Cats are naturally solitary, territorial animals and will only be interested in anything new in their environment. This is why they may play enthusiastically with a new toy for a couple of days but bore of it quickly. So, rather than buying a couple of costly toys, buy 10 to 15 fairly cheap ones and only have a few out at any one time, rotating them regularly to keep their interest. The stuffed puzzle toys are also available for cats and, again, are excellent for making them work for their food. Obesity is a big health issue in cats and anything which keeps them active is a good idea. One of my favorites are the 'fishing rod' toys, particularly good to keep cats moving while

their owners are being lazy, they are easily operated with one arm from the comfort of a sofa! One issue cats have is they don't drink very much. This doesn't generally cause problems but encouraging them to drink more is helpful. One great way to do this is using a 'Pet Fountain'. The constantly flowing water will usually cause the cat to be more interested, as most cat owners know, they are often keen to drink from dripping taps! RABBITS Pet rabbits will also benefit from a present to keep them happy! Rabbits are big chewers and very inquisitive (as anyone who has had their wires nibbled by a house rabbit will tell you!) There are now extensive ranges of chew toys for rabbits in the shops, which also have the added benefit of keeping their teeth ground down.

If you want to buy your pet a useful treat this Christmas; one which will keep them active, entertained and be good for them, the person to speak to is your vet nurse. They will have a lot of experience in this area and be able to point you in the direction of a present that will actually be appreciated (rather than being wrapped up for next year – you know who you are Aunt Flo!)

On Tuesday 22nd Decenber at 1pm Kingswinford Police in conjunction with Arizona Crossing, will be treating the local elderly victims of crime, to a christmas fayre. Vicky Rogers, a Kingswinford Community Support Officer thought it was important to engage with this vulnerable group of the community during the festive season. “A lot of our elderly victims of crime, live alone or have little family around throughout the year and especially during the season of good will. We wanted to show the local victims that they are not just a statistic, and that we actually care.” said Vicky. “Our Police crime prevention officer will be on hand to offer advice to those that attend. People that we have invited have been subject to wide spectrum of crimes, from antisocial behaviour to distraction burglarys and robbery.” Officers are looking forward to serving lunch to those that attend and wishing them well for Christmas and the coming year. Mr Silcox the owner of Arizona Crossing, has kindly assisted with the funding of this event.

Your Christmas Plants Should not go to Pot! Christmas is the time of year when lots of flowering pot plants are given as presents. Cyclamen, Poinsettias, Azaleas and many more can give a great deal of pleasure, but they can also become a worry if they suddenly begin to wilt or generally look unhealthy. Whether you are giving or receiving plants this Christmas time, here are some tips to keep them healthy.

Firstly, always buy from a reliable source. Plants that have been kept and displayed in a greenhouse should be fine, but any that have not been in natural light for some days, or worse still, have been displayed in boxes on a pavement, could well be damaged or even chilled long before you get them home.

All plants require natural daylight, and this is even more important in winter when the days are short. To keep their foliage green and healthy, all plants need to be on a windowsill, or at the very least, very near to a good source of light. It is also important to avoid very warm, dry situations. Poinsettias do like to be fairly warm; after all, they originate from Mexico. Cyclamen, azaleas and potted bulbs however, prefer much cooler conditions which help them to last for many more weeks in good condition. Orchids are very popular now, especially the Phalaenopsis, or ‘moth orchid’. Providing it is not too cold, these will love the humidity and diffused light of a bath or shower room.

Once light and temperatures are suitable, this leaves the often tricky problem of knowing just when to water, and how much to give. With shorter days, plants generally do not use up very much water, but if they are in a centrally heated environment, the soil will lose moisture purely through evaporation, so how warm a particular room is will determine how frequently your pot plants need to be watered. When you do decide to water, it is best to give sufficient water to moisten all of the compost in the pot. Frequent dribbles of water from the top do not really work, because the roots at the bottom of the pot may remain completely dry.

More specifically, I usually water my moth orchids once per week, removing the clear plastic pot from its outer container, and then plunging this pot in a bowl of slightly warm water, just for a minute or two. Then allow it to drain thoroughly before returning it to the outer container. Azaleas will also benefit from being plunged, and for them, around twice a week is usually sufficient, although they should never be allowed to dry out completely. Cyclamen should only be watered when the top of the compost looks and feels dry. I prefer to water from the top, but do this carefully to avoid wetting the centre of the tuber. Hyacinths and other bulbs are quite tolerant, and can be watered as necessary. Poinsettias should be allowed to dry a little, but not so much as to cause dehydration, which will result in falling leaves. Looking after winter pot plants does require some care, but with a little practice, it will become second nature. One final word of warning; never allow any indoor plant to stand in water for long periods; over-watering is much worse than allowing plants to get a little dry. Follow these simple rules and you should be able to enjoy your Christmas plants for many weeks into the New Year. Have a very Happy Christmas, and as the days begin to lengthen again, let’s hope that 2010 will be our best gardening year yet. We gardeners are always optimists!

Step back in time and get ready to dance with Bill Kenwright’s production of Ray Davies’ award-winning musical hit COME DANCING, on stage at the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre from Tuesday 9th to Saturday 13th February 2010.

COME DANCING is written by and stars the former frontman of The Kinks, Ray Davies, who penned some of the greatest songs in pop history, including timeless hits such as Waterloo Sunset, Tired Of Waiting For You, You Really Got Me, and of course, Come Dancing. His work has won him not only an induction into the Musical Hall of Fame, but a CBE. COME DANCING takes us back to the Palais Ballrooms of the 1950s, where thousands would dance and romance at a time when Rock ‘n’ Roll was bursting onto the scene. Featuring impressive dance routines and a heart warming tale of teenage romance, the story is full of wonderful new songs in a show as timeless as its star. Do you remember ‘Come Dancing’?

Come Dancing was a BBC TV ballroom dancing competition show that ran on and off from 1949 to 1998, becoming one of television's longest-running shows.

The show was created by Eric Morley, the founder of Miss World, and began in 1949 by broadcasting from regional ballroom studios, with professional dancers Syd Perkins and Edna Duffield on hand to offer teaching.

In 1953 the format changed to become a competition, with later series seeing regions of the United Kingdom going head to head for the coveted trophy.

The many presenters over the years included Peter West, McDonald Hobley, Charles Nove, Terry Wogan, Brian Johnston, Angela Rippon, Michael Aspel, Noel Edmonds, David Jacobs, Judith Chalmers, Pete Murray, and Rosemarie Ford. Commentators included Ray Moore and Bruce Hammal.
