Double Chocolate Cherry Drops

Chocolate Chunk Cookies

The slight tartness of the cherries provides a delicious contrast to the double dose of rich chocolate from semisweet chunks and cocoa. 1¾ cups all-purpose flour 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened 1 cup sugar 1/4 cup light corn syrup 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 1 large egg 8 ounces semisweet or white chocolate, cut into 1/2-inch chunks 1 cup dried tart cherries 1. Heat oven to 350 F. 2. On waxed paper, combine flour, cocoa and salt. 3. In large bowl, with mixer at medium speed, beat butter and sugar until creamy, occasionally scraping bowl with rubber spatula. Beat in corn syrup, vanilla and egg until wellmixed. At low speed, gradually add flour mixture; beat just until blended, occasionally scraping bowl. With spoon, stir in chocolate chunks and cherries. 4. Drop cookies by rounded measuring teaspoons, 2 inches apart, onto ungreased cookie sheet. Bake cookies 10 to 11 minutes or until tops are just firm. Transfer cookies to wire rack to cool. Repeat with remaining dough. • Each serving: About 85 calories, 5g total fat (3g saturated), 12 mg cholesterol, 50mg sodium, 1g dietary fiber, 1g protein. Quick Oat Kolaches You couldn't ask for a better "out of the oven" warm treat to share with friends, whether they live next door or are from across the country. 1¾ cups Bisquick Heart Smart Baking Mix 6 tablespoons I Can't Believe It's Not Butter! Light Margarine 1 cup Quick Quaker Oats 1/4 cup Splenda Granular 1/4 cup fat-free milk 1 egg, or equivalent in egg substitute 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1/4 cup spreadable fruit (any flavor) 1. Heat oven to 400 F. Spray a large baking sheet with butter-flavored cooking spray. 2. In a large bowl, combine baking mix and margarine. Stir in oats and Splenda. In a small bowl, combine milk, egg and vanilla extract. Add milk mixture to baking mix mixture. Mix just until combined. 3. Place mixture on a large piece of waxed paper and knead lightly until smooth. Roll dough 1/2-inch thick and cut into 12 (3-inch) rounds. Place rounds on prepared baking sheet. Make an indentation in center of each and spoon 1 teaspoon spreadable fruit into indentation. Bake for 10 to 12 minutes. Place baking sheet on a wire rack and allow kolaches to cool. Serves 12. • Each serving equals: 132 calories, 4g fat, 3g protein, 21g carbs, 279mg sodium, 30mg calcium, 1g fiber; Diabetic Exchanges: 1 1/2 Starch, 1/2 Fat; Carb Choices: 1 1/2. © 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Jackie H., Owner I saw the recipe for this week of “Quick Oat Kolaches” and I couldn’t help but think of my late Grandmother - Gertrude. She always made Kolache’s and Nut rolls for us every holiday. I wish I would have paid attention to her baking more because there are many things I would like to make now. I have many memories of her “punching” down the dough for rolls. I have made homemade rolls several times and they have been good but not quite as good as Grandma’s. She did write down a lot of recipes but it seems they still don’t turn out quite like hers. And there are recipes my cousin’s have been searching for that haven’t turned up yet. My back has still been bothering me so I took the plunge and joined a gym for the winter to try to keep active. It seems if I do a lot of sitting it gets worse quickly so walking I will go. My Fiance enjoys it for the walking and also for the social event I gather from all the people he knows when we go there. It’s pretty busy this time of the year - filled with new year resolution people I am guessing. I would rather walk outside as soon as the weather gets nice but it’s just been too cold. Happy New Year! Thanks again for reading!

Non-Stop Music Only He Can Hear DEAR DR. ROACH: I hear music playing in my head at all times. I can’t stop it, even if I’m reading, having a conversation or being active. It’s there when I wake up in the night or in the morning. Even if I consciously stop it and try to hear only the ambient sounds around me, the music always comes back. Is this indicative of any major problems? I am a very healthy 64-year-old male, and this is annoying. It has been going on for most of my life. I wonder if a psychiatrist could help. The only prescription I take is zolpidem for sleep, but I would consider any meds that would help stop this. — S.H. ANSWER: There are several medical reasons to have music in your head. One is called “musical ear syndrome,” which is a type of hallucination most commonly associated with hearing loss. Another is associated with psychiatric disease, especially obsessive-compulsive disorder, but also with schizophrenia or mood disorders. However, my experience is that there are many, many normal people with no psychiatric illness who have music playing in their head almost all the time or all the time. Many people have had a song stuck in their head (often called an “earworm”), but a few people have this continuously. I had one patient in whom this was a major source of distress, and in that case, it appeared to be related to the use of an antidepressant. Solving anagrams and reading are

supposed to help, but in your case I am almost sure that would be temporary. Sometimes playing the music that is in your head can stop it. There are a few case reports of treatment with medication (such as carbamazepine) being effective, but sometimes reassurance that this is almost normal makes it easier to deal with. *** DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with pancreatic cysts. A recent MRI scan showed that they are less than 2 cm and have been stable for a year. My doctor tells me these are benign and don’t need any more follow-up. Could these cysts become cancerous later on? — K. ANSWER: The medical term “cyst” means any fluid-filled, walled structure. They can occur in practically any anatomic location you can think of. In the pancreas, there are several types of cysts, as well as pseudocysts (fluid collections, usually as a result of pancreatitis, that develop a wall after some weeks), and cystic neoplasms, which have the potential to become cancerous. You didn’t tell me how you were diagnosed. Very often, these are found incidentally when a CT scan is obtained for some other reason. In this case, when there are no symptoms present, the only concern is whether they can grow and cause symptoms later on, or worse yet, could become cancerous. Since pancreatic cancer is justifiably feared, I understand your reasons for asking the question. Fortunately, I agree with your doctor completely. The likelihood of a small cyst (your largest cyst is 1.4 cm) being cancer is less than 5 percent. Since it hasn’t changed in a year of follow-up, your risk for cancer is very, very low. *** Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Guess what, Lamb? You’re about to experience a new perspective on a situation you long regarded quite differently. What you learn could open more opportunities later. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The Bold Bovine is tempted to charge into a new venture. But it might be best to take things one step at a time, so that you know just where you are at any given point. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) It’s a good time to go on that fun getaway you’ve been planning. You’ll return refreshed, ready and, yes, even eager to tackle the new challenge that awaits you. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The Moon Child loves to fantasize about magical happenings in the early part of the week. But the sensible Crab gets down to serious business by week’s end. LEO (July 23 to August 22) What goes around comes around for those lucky Leos and Leonas whose acts of generosity could be repaid with opportunities to expand into new and exciting areas of interest. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your concern about your job responsibilities is commendable. But you need to take some quiet time to share with someone who has really missed being with you.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Aspects favor getting out and meeting new people. And as a bonus, you might find that some of your newly made friends could offer important business contacts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You might take pride in wanting to do everything yourself. But now’s a good time to ask family members to help with a demanding personal situation. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Pay more attention to the possibilities in that workplace change. It could show the way to make that long-sought turn on your career path. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your need to succeed might overwhelm obligations to your loved ones. Ease up on that workload and into some well-deserved time with family and friends. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Love rules for amorous Aquarians who can make good use of their ability to communicate feelings. Don’t be surprised if they’re reciprocated in kind. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Fishing for compliments? No doubt, you probably earned them. But it’s best to let others believe they were the ones who uncovered the treasure you really are. BORN THIS WEEK: Your good works flow from an open, generous heart. Nothing makes you happier than to see others happy as well. © 2018 King Features Synd., Inc.

Customers don’t have to pay to pickup this paper. So you can bet they will pickup The Valley Tabloid. They can also view our paper on our website and Facebook page. 2. It’s Reasonably Priced. I do my best to keep my advertising costs very reasonable for you. I understand you also want to be on the internet and website expenses are high sometimes so I try to be there for your print options. 3. It comes out every two weeks. When you are paying to advertise in a daily or weekly paper those fees can start to add up. Every two weeks is sometimes more reasonable for your advertising budget. 4. It’s a smaller publication. You won’t have to look through 40 pages of advertising to find your ad and neither will your customers. 5. Keeping your name out there. It’s possible someone isn’t currently in the market to buy your product, but when they are you want your name to be the first one that pops into their mind. I can give you reasonably priced exposure. 6. Print. Lots of people still like to read things in print. I tried going digital with one of my magazines and I hated it. 7. ME! I will do my best to create an ad you love and that works for you and your business and I am a local business owner myself!

Whirl Up Smoothies for After-School Snacks Smoothie. It feels good just to say the word, doesn’t it? I used to think of the concoction of naturally sweet, fresh fruit flavors with crushed ice and yogurt as a magical summer thirst quencher, but with so many healthy and sometimes surprising add-ins nowadays — from kale to beets and chia seeds — I recently dusted off my blender to give some new combos a whirl. While my preference is still a traditional blend of vitamin-rich fruits and berries (even when they come out of a package from the freezer), my family likes a variety of updated twists, too — including adding coconut milk to the goodness for a refreshing, light taste. But first, some smoothie basics using a standard blender. 1. Start with liquids such as juice, milk, kefir, yogurt, sparkling water and crushed ice. 2. Add fresh fruit (a half or whole banana is a standard ingredient for flavor and for thickening the mixture of any smoothie) and/or vegetables. To cut prep time, your school-age kids can pre-package and freeze fruitand-veggie combinations in small plastic-bag packets. When it’s time to make a smoothie, toss in the contents of a packet with other ingredients. 3. Whirl it all together. I pulse a few times, then blend for 15 seconds or until smooth. Now for my go-to recipe that is quick to make at breakfast time before sending kids out the door to the bus stop, or as a satisfying afternoon snack to refuel. Older school-age kids can make it themselves with attention to tastes and health needs. Be flexible, too, and experiment

ice cubes, crushed cup coconut milk banana cup plain, unsweetened yogurt cup fresh or frozen berries, such as a combination of blueberries, strawberries and raspberries Dash of cinnamon (optional)

Place ingredients in blender starting with liquids, and process until smooth. Pour into glasses. Makes about 2 1/2 cups TIP: If smoothie is too thin, add more fruit or yogurt. Too thick? Just add milk or fruit juice. *** Donna Erickson’s award-winning series “Donna’s Day” is airing on public television nationwide. Good Night, Sleep Right! Like many adults, I sometimes have trouble going to sleep or staying asleep. Sleep researchers have determined that as many as two-thirds of Americans don’t get enough sleep. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has called insufficient sleep a “public health epidemic.” Contrary to common belief, sleep is not a time when the mind and body shut down. According to the National Sleep Foundation, “sleep is an active period in which a lot of important processing, restoration and strengthening occurs.” Sleep serves critical functions, and it is necessary for optimal health and well-being. Over time, lack of sleep can lead to stress, depression, and mental and physical exhaustion. We know that when we’re not well-rested, we don’t perform at our best. Most adults need seven to nine hours of sleep each night. Some people may need as few as five hours or as many as 10 hours of sleep. Children need even more. Both children and adults can use naps to get the total number of hours of rest they need. The focus here is on ways that adults can meet their need for rest. Your body has a regular rhythm. Your body and your brain will tell you when you need rest. Use this information to set a regular time to go to bed and get up. Maintaining this simple routine will help supply your body with the energy it needs each day. Sleep cannot be stored. Bodies need rest on a regular basis. Here are some tips for improving your sleep: • Most people find that the environment of the room is important to sleeping well. Usually people want the room dark, cool and quiet. • Some people use a nap to get the

extra sleep they need. Sleep experts suggest limiting an adult nap to less than 45 minutes and taking it before 4 p.m. to ensure that you can still get a full night’s sleep. • Watch what you eat and drink in the evening. Foods and drinks that are high in protein, caffeine or sugar can keep you awake. Liquids can cause you to have to get up to use the bathroom during the night. • Exercise has been found to be beneficial for sleep, especially for increasing quality of sleep and decreasing certain problems such as sleep apnea. Even small amounts of exercise during the day could help.

also builds bones. Tart Cherry Juice — Naturally boosts levels of melatonin. Dairy — The brain uses the calcium and tryptophan found in dairy foods such as milk, yogurt and cheese to manufacture sleep-triggering melatonin. Crustaceans — Shrimp and lobster are a great source of the sleep-inducing amino-acid tryptophan. Honey — It’s natural sugars raise our insulin slightly, allowing tryptophan to enter our brains more easily. Lettuce — Contains lactucarium, which has sedative properties. This unusual tea recipe is a natural way to help you get a good night’s sleep.

For most people, some exercise is better for sleep than no exercise at all. • Avoid excitement before bedtime. Instead, try reading, taking a warm bath or shower, or adopting some other routine to help you relax. • When traveling, try to keep your normal eating and sleeping routine. You might find it easier to adjust to a different time zone by adapting your sleeping times before you leave home. These foods may improve the quality of sleep: Walnuts — Good source of tryptophan, a sleep-enhancing amino acid that helps make serotonin. Walnuts also contain their own source of melatonin, the “body clock” hormone that sets your sleep and helps you to fall asleep faster. Almonds — Rich in magnesium, which helps you to stay asleep and

You can double or triple this recipe, and refrigerate the tea and re-heat a serving each night as desired. 2½ cups water 3-4 large lettuce leaves 1 tablespoon of lemon balm (dried), or two dozen fresh leaves, or 2 herbal lemon balm tea bags 1-2 teaspoons honey 1. Using a small pot, pour in water and add lettuce leaves, and bring to a boil over high heat, about 15 minutes. Remove pot from the heat. Add fresh or dried lemon balm or the lemon balm tea bags, cover, and let steep for 30 minutes. 2. Strain the tea and pour into a sealable container. Discard the lettuce leaves and the dried herbs or tea bags. Pour a serving of the tea into a cup, stir in the honey, and drink 1 hour before going to bed. Refrigerate any remaining tea, and reheat and add honey before drinking. Makes 2 servings. *** Angela Shelf Medearis is an award-winning children’s author, culinary historian and the author of seven cookbooks. • Freeze cool whip in a thick layer and use cookie cutters to make shapes for hot chocolate ... perfect for these cold winter nights! • “Use squeeze bottles to do cookie decorating or cake piping. They also can be used to color pancake batter and make designs. It’s so much fun for the kiddos (and the parents too!)” — L.I. in Montana • Fog proof that bathroom mirror by simply cleaning as usual, then coating the mirror with car wax. Use a lint-free cloth to buff it off, revealing a layer of steam-proof protection that lasts about a month. So good when you need a mirror to get ready in the morning. • When transporting any type of bottle or jar that could leak, simply place a small piece of plastic wrap over the open end, then close the bottle tightly. This will work for most screw-top containers to make them leak-proof. Snap-down lids should be secured with strong tape or placed into a larger sealable bag, like a zipper-seal plastic baggie. • “I toss my daughter’s hoodie sweatshirt into the dryer about 20 minutes before she needs to leave for the bus stop in the morning. Just as she’s leaving, I grab it and she puts it on. It keeps her toasty all the way to the stop, and it make her feel special.” — M.R. in South Carolina • Before you go out shopping, take a minute on your phone while on the WIFI at home to search your email and websites for sales and coupons. Screenshot coupons so that the barcodes are clearly visible. This will save you downloading time while you are out and about, as well as serving as a reminder of the sale items you want to look at. Is Chocolate Really a Danger to Dogs? DEAR PAW’S CORNER: Just after Halloween, our dog “Skipjack” got into one of my kids’ candy stashes and ate everything, including the wrappers. I kept an eye on him overnight and he seemed fine, just drank water more often. The next day he was normal, other than passing a pretty loose stool with plenty of brightly colored wrappers mixed into it. Is the “never let your dogs eat chocolate” rule overblown? — Tim F., Wichita, Kansas DEAR TIM: I’ve heard anecdotes from several readers about accidental chocolate consumption. Most of them say their pets didn’t have a problem with it. But then, I’m not a veterinarian, and it’s a good bet that vets see quite a few sick pets that got into a chocolate stash, particularly around the holidays. I recently read an article about mass-produced U.S. chocolate having less cocoa content than chocolates made elsewhere. The Food & Drug Administration requires milk chocolate to contain no less than 10 percent chocolate liquor. Compare that to the U.K., where milk chocolate must contain at least 25 percent cocoa solids. The size and weight of your pet also must be taken into account. Bigger dogs may process toxic foods more easily than small dogs. So, cheap Halloween candy consumed by a large dog may not have a noticeably negative effect. However, it’s still a gamble. Another issue to consider is Xylitol, a sweetener often used in sugar-free candies. That can be a danger to dogs of any size. In short, keep candy and pets separate — period.
