Roleystone’s Local Star Dear Editor, While visiting my Mum in Roleystone, I came across the advertisement calling for mention of Local Stars and I felt compelled to drop you a line. I believe my Mum is a local star of Roleystone. I am putting forward Francine Brereton as a local star for the work she has commenced in the Roleystone community through the not-for-profit organisation MADI Works Inc. She delivers innovative, engaging and fun programs that teach children and adults alike the power to speak and the power to respond to any situation that makes them feel unsafe (from minor issues to someone needing help to deal with a serious situation of abuse). Towards the end of 2012, Fran ran a version of one the programs “Mega MADI Super Star’ at the Roleystone Community College. With the program based around a short play, the students took part in learning and discussing the messages of MADI before the kids performed the play which included song and dance to their peers and teachers. As a result, the children were able to pass on the protective behaviour strategies

in their own unique way. There seems an ever present need in the media for programs like this, however I think people can be frightened of how their problems can be dealt with and who they can go to. With a little bit more exposure, I believe that MADI Works Inc. will address the issue of protective behaviours in a fun nonthreatening way to all sorts of groups, sporting groups and after school care etc. The MADI Works aside, Fran is engaged in many projects and has a unique and wonderful way of relating to people of all ages and walks of life. She is also the Director of the dance company Explosive Dance & Theatre Co. who are due to be running some performing arts workshop classes in Roleystone in the October school holidays. This will give local kids some extra options for fun and physical activity over the school break. Thank you for taking the time to read my letter. Kind Regards, Tamara Artemis.

Unplugged Acoustic Folk Roots & Blues A massive thank you to everyone who came along to the ‘Unplugged’ session on Sunday September the 8th. At first, I thought I was going to be it for the afternoon, and asked the bar staff to phone ‘Rent- A-Crowd’ for me, and with that the room filled almost instantly. It was great to see both new faces and old friends. It soon became so packed at one point, that I thought we would run out of time before I could get everyone in front of the mike. A couple of new faces created great interest, and international singer, songwriter, and musician Andrew Bond lit the room up with several selfpenned songs and a couple of covers. Andrew has been living here for 5 years, and hails from the UK. Local guitarist Andrew Bond and general classy entertainer Mike provided some smooth blues guitar and vocals. Two thirds of ‘Beatzwukin’ played us through some easy listening, having just released their new CD. If you’re interested in a CD, you can go to their website. Mike Our next meet-up will be on Sunday the 13th of October, starting at 3:00pm at the Roleystone Country Club. For more details, contact Mel at mgyoung@ westnet.com.au, or text 0406 190 822.
