FLAME

ON!

Red hair is both vibrant and beautiful but it can be tricky to choose and maintain the perfect shade. Follow our root to tip guide to smokin’ hot hair every time.

1

First things first, is red really the colour for you? Red hair is bold and attention-grabbing, so if you’re the shy and retiring type, probably best to look away now.

2

While it’s said there’s a shade of red for everyone (a hair dresser once told me the same about blonde… epic mistake!), you may have to try a few different hues before finding the right one.

3

Flick through hair and celebrity mags. Find examples of shades you like and where the model/ celeb has a similar skin tone to your own. This will give you a good indication of how it will look on you.

4

Look at your eye colour. If you have blue eyes choose a cool-toned red with aubergine or plum undertones. If you have brown eyes opt for something more golden or coppery.

5

Pop into your salon for a consultation before your appointment, armed with your mag cuttings. Your colourist can offer advice on what will and won’t work, and it avoids making any snap decisions.

6

11

7

12

Colour transformations can have a huge impact on other aspects of your overall look – what you wear, your makeup etc. Ensure you’re happy to make other changes before you take the plunge.

Don’t go too monochromatic. Hair shouldn’t be one single colour. For a natural vibe your colour should have depth and different dimensions.

Wash your hair no more than once a week to reduce the chances of your colour fading. Use a dry shampoo in between to manage any natural oiliness which may occur. A deep conditioning treatment can revive vibrancy and tone. Apply the day before you have your colour application and then once a week after.

8

13

9

14

When having your colour done, ask your colourist for a glossing treatment. This will lock in the colour, while leaving your hair shiny and super smooth.

Avoid washing your hair for 48 hours after your colour has been applied. After 2 days, rinse using cold water to help close the cuticles and seal in the colour.

10

Choose shampoos, conditioners, and styling products that are labelled as suitable for colour-treated hair. These products are formulated without sulphates and parabens, which can weaken the colour.

Due to the nature of red pigments, your colour will fade more quickly than if you were a blonde or brunette. For a consistently rich, even colour from root to tip, refresh your colour regularly. Even in winter the sun can lighten your hair. Extend the life of your shade by using UV protectant products, or by covering up with a hat or scarf whenever you’re outside.

15

Finally, a swim in your lunch hour is great for your health but potentially a disaster for your hair. Avoid over-chlorination by wetting your hair and adding a little conditioner before you swim, or alternatively wear a cap. URBAN FOX NOVEMBER 2017 15

HEALTH & WELLBEING

BE HAPPY

BE HEALTHY Feeling tired, unmotivated and ready to hibernate? Try out our tips and tricks to boost your health and wellbeing this winter.

smile doesn't even have to be based on real emotion, so faking it works too.

5

Don’t forget to exercise. It can be tempting to hibernate during the colder months, but push yourself to exercise and you'll really notice a difference. If you don't fancy braving the elements, swimming or aqua aerobics are especially gentle on joints and boost both our physical and mental health.

1

Wake up gently. Invest in a Lumie Bodyclock, an alarm clock that wakes you with a gradually brightening sunrise. Waking like this helps to regulate your sleep/wake cycle and has even been shown to boost mood, energy and productivity levels for the rest of the day.

6

Join a choir. Singing is an aerobic activity that stimulates circulation and exercises major muscle groups, including the abs. It can improve mental alertness and posture, and even clear the sinuses. Better still singing with others reduces stress levels and creates a sense of joint achievement.

2

Increase your vitamin D. The best exposure is between 11.00 & 15.00 so get out for a 15 minute walk, even if the sun isn’t shining. Still not getting enough? Try eating more foods high in vitamin D, take a daily supplement and sit by a window when you’re indoors.

3

Pretend it's summer. Surround yourself with bright, bold colours. Treat yourself to a bunch of flowers, new cushions for the sofa, or an on-trend colour pop coat (see pages 8-9). You'll be surprised how much better you feel by physically brightening up those dull days.

4

Crack a smile. Research tells us that our mood is elevated and stress levels reduced if we plaster a big smile on our face, even if just for a short period of time. Thankfully the

7

Eat healthily. What you eat can have a real effect on your state of mind. Avoid sugar and refined carbohydrates, which send you on a rollercoaster of sugar peaks and crashes. Check out Rebecca Watts’ article on “Seasonal Appetite Disorder” (page 23) for more detailed advice.

8

Stay hydrated. Although a glass of cold water may not be the first drink you’re drawn to in the winter, aim to have at least 8 glasses a day. Dehydration inhibits

the immune system’s functioning, making it harder for your body to fight off colds and the flu.

9

Free your mind. The greater the demands imposed on us, the greater the need to switch off. Practicing mindfulness, meditation or yoga, can create a sense of peace and reduce stress. The beauty of these relaxation techniques is that they can be done anytime, anywhere and for free.

10

Sleep well. A good night’s sleep is important for revitalising and restoring the mind and body. Getting 8 hours good quality sleep each night will help keep your immune system resilient, meaning you’re less likely to catch whatever viruses are making their way around the office.

11

Beat the blues. Finally while it's normal to slow down over winter, there are conditions such as Seasonal Affective Disorder that cause fatigue and low mood. Treatments are available (CBT, antidepressants, light therapy), so do speak to your GP if you’re concerned you may be affected.

HEALTH & WELLBEING

Seasonal

Appetite

Disorder It’s the time of year when getting out of bed in the morning seems as hard as running a marathon and we ditch our summer salads in favour of stodgy feel good foods. Rebecca Watts from TheStudios40 reveals how to curb those crazy carb cravings. First for ‘the science bit’. There are 3 things you need to know… Neurotransmitters are chemical messengers that communicate information throughout our brain and body. Serotonin, helps balance our moods, controls our hormones and manages our appetite. Melatonin aids body clock regulation and helps us get a good night sleep. Together they work to keep us balanced. During the daytime our production of serotonin is high and melatonin low, but when light levels are lower, we convert higher levels of serotonin into melatonin making us tired, sleepy and lower in mood.

This is a natural part of our body clock, melatonin helps you sleep at night and serotonin helps you get up the next day. However, when days get shorter and nights longer this can lead to difficulty getting up in the morning, feeling sleepy and low throughout the day and yes leads us to want to eat more.

supply of tryptophan to the brain.

So the lack of daylight makes us sleepy and wanting to eat more, but why do we turn to stodgy foods – stew and dumplings, jam roly poly and custard, pie and mash – you know the ones! Basically our body uses an essential amino acid ‘tryptophan’, found in protein sources, to produce serotonin which can then be used to produce melatonin. However, insulin is required to produce the serotonin and it is sugar that triggers insulin production. So essentially these winter cravings could just be the body’s natural way of trying to increase our serotonin levels.

Eat little and often. Large meals can reap havoc. Eating more frequently, before you’re really hungry, may help reduce the cravings.

But before you fall head long into a winter carb fest - you’ll regret it come spring – here’s my nutrition and lifestyle tips on how to curb those cravings: Eat carbohydrates with your protein. This has been shown to increase the

Eat plenty of good fats. Omega 3 fatty acids can help serotonin work better. Eating natural fats from fatty fish, nuts, seeds and avocados, can also aid good mental health and hormone control.

Keep busy and active. You’re less likely to binge eat if you’re active. Exercise can also boost endorphins, another neurotransmitter that can positively affect your mood. Get some sun. Open your curtains as soon as you wake up and fit in a lunchtime walk. Sunlight also helps our body produce vitamin D which helps with low mood and aids the production of serotonin. Have 7-9 hours quality sleep. Aid the natural increase of melatonin at night to encourage better sleep. Avoid light stimulation from technology before bed and create a relaxing bedtime routine. Soup

OF THE DAY There’s never a dull mouthful with these seasonal soups from Riverford.

JERUSALEM ARTICHOKE & LEEK SOUP Method: Dress with fancy garnishes or leave plain with crusty bread for an easy midweek meal. Ingredients: 2 tbsp sunflower, vegetable or rapeseed oil 2 leeks, washed & sliced 1 onion, sliced 600g Jerusalem artichokes, scrubbed clean, peeled & roughly chopped 1.2 litres vegetable stock, plus a little extra to thin if needed 1 bay leaf 2 rosemary sprigs Pinch of freshly grated nutmeg Salt & black pepper

Heat the oil in large pan. Add the leeks and onion and fry on a very low heat for 10 minutes, until softened, stirring now and then to stop them catching. Add the artichokes, stock, bay leaf and rosemary and season with the grated nutmeg and salt and pepper. Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 25–30 mins, until the artichokes are very soft. Remove the bay leaf and rosemary then blitz the soup in a food processor or blender, adding a little more stock or water to thin to your preferred consistency. For an even smoother, creamier texture, pass the soup through a sieve. Reheat gently and check the seasoning before serving. Finally swirl a little double cream or crème fraîche onto each bowl and garnish with rosemary.

CARROT & CORIANDER This 1980s pairing seemed very cutting edge back then, but has stood the test of time. Ingredients: 2 tbsp vegetable oil 2 onions, chopped 1kg carrots, peeled & chopped 1 potato, peeled & chopped Large bunch of fresh coriander (leaves and stems), roughly chopped Salt & black pepper Method: Heat the oil in a large pan then add the onion and carrots and sweat them gently over a low heat for 20–30 minutes, being careful that they don’t catch. They should be no more than lightly browned. This is the most important stage as it is when the vegetables release most of their flavour. Add the potato, season with salt and pepper and cook for another 3 minutes, stirring frequently. Cover the ingredients with water and simmer until the potato is fully cooked, about 15–20 minutes. Finally, add the chopped coriander and whizz with a hand blender until the soup is really smooth. Garnish with a dollop of crème fraîche or cream, toasted almonds, oil (walnut, hazelnut or sesame) and a sprinkling of coriander.

ICE

QUEEN Margot Robbie delights in throwing herself into her performances. She smacked Leonardo DiCaprio in the face during her audition for The Wolf of Wall Street; she revelled in her character Harley Quinn’s wicked behaviour on the set of Suicide Squad; and she recently got caught up in a violent argument with co-star Sebastian Stan while shooting I, Tonya, a biopic about the notorious American figure skater Tonya Harding. Robbie became so overwrought while filming the scene that she stormed off the set screaming at Stan, who plays Harding’s exhusband, Jeff Gillooly.

I, Tonya, which premiered to rave reviews at the recent Toronto International Film Festival, recounts the events surrounding how Harding’s husband arranged to have someone break (unsuccessfully) rival skater Nancy Kerrigan’s leg prior to the 1994 US Figure Skating Championships. Gillooly eventually went to jail for his role in the dastardly plot, and though Harding served no prison time, she was hit with a $100,000 fine after she pleaded guilty to standing in the way of the prosecution following the event – leaving her career effectively in tatters as she was banned for life from the United States Figure Skating Association. Playing any character requires some level of empathy from the actor, but Robbie is keen to point out that the film’s motive is not to alter people’s perceptions about Harding or her role in the attack on her skating rival. “We didn’t set out to make the film to

change people’s minds or make a particular statement about what happened surrounding the incident,” says Robbie. “The greater theme is truth and there are so many different sides to a single story. I don’t know if people will walk out of the theatre thinking that someone was in the right or the wrong, but people will appreciate that they didn’t know the full story.” Figure skating fanatics have already remarked on the Aussie beauty’s resemblance to Harding from early footage of the film, which is less down to physical similarities and more for the fact that Robbie spent four months learning to skate so she would be able to mimic as many of the complex moves as possible. “It was much more difficult than I imagined,” reveals Robbie, raising her perfectly groomed brows.

...the film’s motive is not to alter people’s perceptions about Harding... “One big thing I found out was that the real challenge is making the skating look as effortless as possible even though it’s very athletic and physically demanding. Skating is like ballet in that sense because it’s that effortless quality that makes it look so beautiful and artistic.”

Aussie actress Margot Robbie has fast become seriously hot property in Hollywood – and with her stunning looks, vivacious personality and sparky talent, it isn’t hard to see why. This December we see the actress in full spandexand-sequins mode in figure skating drama I, Tonya as she takes on one of the sport’s most intriguing stars. To be fair to the 27-year-old actress, Harding at her peak was a phenomenal athlete. Having begun skating in the mid-Eighties, her big break came during the 1991 US Championships when she won the title with the event’s first 6.0 ever given to a single female skater for technical merit. She went on to achieve three more firsts during that competition, all of which involved her ability to perfect the technically challenging triple-axel move. So, having mastered the basics, did Robbie fancy having a go at Harding’s signature move? “There was no way I could even attempt that – only six women in history, including Tonya Harding, have ever even landed the jump in competition,” she laughs. “The best I could do was as many of the spins and artistic moves, but it takes years and years of practice to be able to pull off those jumps!” Given her status as one of the hottest female stars in Hollywood right now, it’s understandable that Robbie is reluctant to do anything to impede her physique. And I, Tonya promises to launch her even further into the

LIFE & WORK

stratosphere as her performance as Harding delivers not just the physical aspect of skating, but also effectively portrays the emotional complexities of a woman who is struggling to maintain both a stellar career and a failing marriage. It’s an aspect of the character that Robbie wasn’t expecting, but says brought a new richness and complexity to the experience. “It was only while we were about a third of the way through the shooting that the film took on a different quality for me. They had a bizarre relationship but Sebastian [Stan] brought such a humanity to Jeff that it turned the movie into a love story that overshadowed any of the other themes,” she explains. “His performance

made you believe that what he did [in planning the attack on Kerrigan] he did out of love for Tonya even though that was very messed-up. But it changed the nature of the story in a way that I hadn’t expected.” Romance is clearly on the Queensland native’s mind, as she herself wed her long-time beau – English filmmaker Tom Ackerley – in December last year, having begun dating in 2014 after meeting on the set of Suite Française. Her desire to create stability in her home life can be seen as a reaction to her own childhood, in which she saw her mother struggling to raise four children alone. “We were always fighting and my mum had to be a

very strong woman to hold things together. She’s an amazing woman.” Robbie’s hardy farm-life upbringing is evident in her robust personality, adventurous spirit, and of course her bold career choices, though she reveals that a film set is actually the last place she thought she’d end up. “My siblings and I went boarhunting and surfing and I grew up learning more about agriculture and animal husbandry than you could imagine,” she says reflectively, before adding with one last flash of that magnificent smile: “It was not the kind of upbringing you could ever have expected would lead anyone into acting!” URBAN FOX NOVEMBER 2017 35

LIFE & WORK

Winter

BLUES? Watching too much news has been linked to anxiety and depression. But whether world events are making you mad or sad this winter, it’s not as bad as you think, says Sarah Mettrick. Have you reached the point where you dread listening to the news? How often do we hear uplifting stories? I sigh with relief if headlines report the latest squabbles among MPs and the chaos enveloping Brexit. The future of our country in turmoil? Yes, well that will do if it means no mass shootings or knife wielding maniacs on the rampage. If the worse news is Theresa May and Jeremy Corbyn throwing their toys at one another…it’s a good day. My twelve year old daughter had a terrorist briefing in preparation for a trip to London. I applaud the school, albeit saddened it has come to that. Instead of being excited to see Miss Trunchbull and Bruce Bogtrottor get up to their antics in Matilda, she is chanting the words “Run. Hide. Tell.” These words of instruction will become the mantra of their everyday lives. How wonderful we only had the “Stop. Look. Listen” of The Green Cross Code to memorise.

Joules

We can all be forgiven for thinking the world is falling apart (hypothetically speaking - well that’s if Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un keep their fingers off the nuke triggers) but is this really the case? With the media concentrating so much on negativity and it being flung at our phones, TVs and gadgets 24/7, it’s no wonder we are brainwashed into believing the world has never been so dangerous. This is, according to several sources not the case at all. Apparently it’s the safest time in history to be alive. Overall we are healthier, wealthier, freer and better educated than ever before. There is less war, less poverty and famine and believe it or not, less people dying in terrorist attacks. So why doesn’t it feel that way? Because we are so connected. The world is less violent, we are just so aware when violence occurs. We hear everything immediately and in graphic detail. We didn't have access to this sort of information years ago and thank God, can you imagine media coverage from Auschwitz popping up on your phone or recordings of torture in the Middle Ages? No, me neither.

So it would seem we are in fact heading in the right direction when it comes to the safety and longevity of human beings. Those desperate in war torn Syria or those mourning a loved one who went to a pop concert and never came home, probably wouldn't agree, and understandably so. Dreadful things still happen and for many, life brings great hardship and unbearable sadness. Our united love and support is paramount. It is however on a global scale, getting better.

"Overall we are healthier, wealthier, freer and better educated than ever before." We have a choice what to focus our minds on; negativity and despair or the privileges and joys our lives are now blessed with. Which would serve you better? We are, on the whole, more compassionate, more mindful and more tolerant than ever before. I’m still a Mum though and look forward to my daughter returning safely from her trip knowing the most scary thing she witnessed was indeed Miss Trunchbull. URBAN FOX NOVEMBER 2017 37

STEPS TO

SUCCESS Even if you love your job, it’s never too early to plan a move up the career ladder.

Are you sitting comfortably? Then we’ll begin… UPDATE YOUR CV Even if you’re not looking to change jobs right now, it’s good to be prepared should a promotion or departmental move come up in your existing company. Limit your CV to just 2 pages (what employer has the time or inclination to read more), describing your previous roles, skills and career goals. Remember to remove all acronyms and jargon. RESEARCH YOUR INDUSTRY Whether it’s keeping up to date with new business developments and technology, or attending relevant training and conferences, staying on top of your industry is crucial if you want to climb the corporate ladder. RESEARCH YOURSELF Did you know that many employers will now check out your social network sites during the recruitment process?

Ensure your LinkedIn profile is up to date and that your Facebook page doesn’t contain any content that you wouldn’t be comfortable with your new boss seeing. HONE YOUR COMMUNICATION SKILLS Being able to speak clearly and concisely is invaluable in business. Whether you’re speaking to your director, colleagues or clients, projecting your ideas effectively will inspire confidence and allow them to put their trust in you. NETWORK, NETWORK, NETWORK There are lots of generalist and industry specific groups you can join or simply invite a colleague or client out for coffee. Remember that building relationships can take time and effort, so even if you don’t make a connection straight away, it’s still one more person you can reach out to in the future. FEEL CONFIDENT If you’ve ever procrastinated over applying for a job, or passed on a promotion because you’re “not ready”, this could be a sign that you’re sabotaging your own career. It’s completely normal to be a bit nervous about change, but go on, feel the fear and do it anyway!

TAKE A BREAK Travel offers the opportunity for personal growth and development, and at this time of year potentially a bit of much needed sunshine too. From learning a new language, to expanding your network and improving your cultural awareness; travel will serve you well, and may even open a few unexpected doors once back in the corporate world. WORK SOMEWHERE ELSE …just temporarily. Volunteering not only benefits the organisation you volunteer for, but also you too. It’s a fantastic way to expand your personal and professional networks, learn new and transferable skills, explore other careers, plus help your CV stand out against others in a recruitment scenario. PLOT YOUR COURSE How can you expect to reach your career goals if you don’t have a clear strategy in place? Take time out to make a plan of where you want to be in 3 or 5 years, and the steps you’ll need to take to get there. Think of it as a Sat Nav for your career until you reach your destination. Share how you’re planning to make the most of your career this winter with us on Facebook.

HOMES & GARDENS

BABY,

IT'S COLD OUTSIDE

With darker nights and dipping temperatures, the thought of hibernating is an appealing one. Zoe Hubbard from Maison Interiors shares her guide to creating a warm winter interior, to see you right through to spring. SITTING ROOM

Planning on snuggling up in front of the TV? Fill your sitting room with things you want to touch. An old leather chair, a soft woollen throw, a textured rug. Mixing dissimilar pieces (glass, marble, wood) will create visual texture, while layering your lighting will produce a warm tranquil living space.

ENTRANCE

As you step through the door of your home you want to feel an instant sense of warmth and respite from the elements. Minimise drafts with curtains and pretty yet practical excluders; and create a cosy ambience with aromas of eucalyptus, cinnamon and chopped firewood.

SNUG

There’s nothing better than getting back from a cold brisk walk and sitting by the fire with a book. If you don’t have a snug, no worries, an unused corner will do. All you need is a soft, comfy armchair, a cosy blanket, a cuppa, or bowl of soup, and a good book. And relax.

BEDROOM BATHROOM

As the evenings get darker, there's nothing quite like a bath to soak away the stresses of the day. Light some candles, add essential oils or luxurious bubbles and take some time to restore your energy. Don’t forget the fluffy towels and bath robe to wrap around you when you get out.

And so to bed. Opt for darker hues on the walls. It’ll envelop your bedroom, creating the ideal space to unwind and slumber. Accessorise with knitted scatter cushions, throws and blankets, perfect for hibernation. And keep lighting soft but add visual interest with multi pendants and bedsides. URBAN FOX NOVEMBER 2017 47

Marks & Spencer

'TIS THE SEASON...

TO SELL Dark evenings and wet weekends can result in a slowdown in the property market. Sam McDonald from Fothergill Wyatt shares his tips and tricks on how to maximise the chances of selling your home this winter.

Everyone knows that traditionally the property market slows down in the winter months. However, there are some buyers that are on the lookout for premium properties all year round. If you’re looking to sell your home this winter, here are some practical tips to put you ahead of the competition…

Curb appeal

Make sure your property stands out from the crowd. Give your front door a lick of paint, clean your windows and clear away leaves and debris from the porch. If it’s frosty, clear all paths of ice to avoid your viewers having any nasty surprises. Finally add colour with an array of winterflowering plants in attractive pots on the approach to your door.

Maintain & declutter

Clear out gutters to avoid water damage and wash the patio and decking to prevent it from becoming a slip hazard on wetter days. Gardens can fall into disarray during the winter and look unappealing to visitors. Trim back unkempt bushes and shrubs, and remove summer clutter. A burst Peppa Pig football in the corner of overgrown shrubs is not going to entice buyers.

First impressions

Remove coats, shoes, umbrellas and dirty wellies from the hallway to make your entrance seem larger and more inviting, and to combat any damp, musty smells. Fix chips in woodwork, cracks in plaster, replace mouldy sealant and mend anything which is visibly broken. Tidy away as much as you can, storing excess furniture, books and toys off-site if necessary.

Warm & inviting

If you haven’t already, book a boiler service and check all radiators and gas fires are working efficiently. Not only is a warm house more welcoming but these are the sort of things that show up on surveys. Before a viewing, ensure

radiators and lights are on, fires are lit (who doesn’t love a log burner or open fire), as well as lighting some well-placed candles to create the perfect ambience.

Delight the senses

Get out those warming throws and blankets, and add cushions in autumnal or winter neutrals to create a cosy interior. And don’t forget to fill your home with enticing aromas. Opt for warming tones using scented candles or diffusers, or keep it real with the smell of home baked bread or cake. Nearer Christmas mulled wine and homemade mince pies are a winner, especially if you offer refreshments to your viewers.

Outside In

Just because it’s winter your home doesn’t have to be bereft of nature. Replace summer plants with seasonal alternatives. Think African violets, succulents, azaleas and potted chrysanthemums. You can even sneak in some poinsettias and holly before the Christmas tree arrives. When the time comes, remember less is more. Choose a simple theme that’s in keeping with your property. Viewers need to be able to see your home past an explosion of tinsel! Finally selling your home during the winter months does have its advantages. Competition is less fierce with fewer homes being actively marketed and buyers tend to be more serious, leading to less time-wasting overall.

HOMES & GARDENS

AND SO

TO BED? If there’s a piece of received gardening wisdom that has more holes in it than a soil sieve, it’s the idea that a garden ‘should be put to bed for winter’, says landscape and garden designer and Radio 4 Gardeners’ Question Time panellist, Matthew Wilson. The great Dutch garden designer, Piet Oudolf, has a wonderful phrase to describe plants that can look good even when the life has drained out of them; ‘plants that die heroically’. He’s right; there’s no reason why the plants in our gardens shouldn’t be interesting just because they are dead. Japanese anemones’, for example, have the loveliest seed heads, like little black buttons held on long wiry stems. Chop them down and all you are left with is an empty space until next spring. Grasses are another group of plants that look good right through winter. My favourite, the golden oat grass (Stipa gigantea) flowered back in June but still looks fantastic, with long, straw like stems topped with golden oat-like seed cases. Late flowering grasses, such as Miscanthus and Molinia, are even fresher. Both look good right through winter, and also make a great display indoors in a vase.

I’ve often wondered where the idea that a garden should go to sleep the moment the clocks change comes from. Someone once told me that it was an act of cleansing, readying the ground for a good hard frost that would ‘kill off all the pests’. This of course makes absolutely no sense at all. In a garden denuded of vegetation a really cold winter could certainly knock off a few aphids and the odd slug. But then it would wipe out all the good guys too – the ladybirds, lacewings and ground beetles, the bugs that eat other bugs and keep our gardens in balance. No, I think it’s simply a case of overzealous tidying, and perhaps an aesthetic radar with the dial turned a little too far towards ‘neat’. The best gardens are those that are interesting throughout the year and that never ‘go to bed’. It doesn’t follow that they must be a mess.

Image: RHS/Lee Beal, design by Matthew Wilson Gardens

Whenever I plan a new garden I start with the structural plants, such as evergreen shrubs or clipped yew and box. Even in a small garden there is usually room for a compact tree, especially something with a long season of interest like crab apple, Amelanchier of Birch. Dogwoods (Cornus) are just a green mound in summer, keeping their beautifully coloured stems under wraps. In summer these background plants are all but invisible among the noisy flowers; you’re unlikely to stop and admire the glossy leaf of a Camellia when there’s a bright and shouty rose right next to it. But from October onwards they take centre stage, and the subtler aspects of leaf, bark, and stem come to the fore. These structural plants also form the frame around the perennials that are busy dying heroically, preventing it all looking like an unholy mess. And, of course, at some point it all does need cutting back. My rule is that as soon as a plant collapses into a mucky pile, I tidy it away. By which time Christmas is a memory, and I can just see the daffodils emerging. URBAN FOX NOVEMBER 2017 57

Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool (15) 1 hr 45 mins Opens nationwide Fri 17 Nov 0116 242 2800 | phoenix.org

Based on a remarkable true story, Annette Bening stars as Gloria Grahame (the real-life Oscar-winning star of The Big Heat and In a Lonely Place) who meets struggling actor Peter (Jamie Bell) in the late 1970s while they’re living in the same London boarding house. Falling for each other, Gloria hides her ill health from Peter; but after collapsing during a UK tour she asks if she can come and stay with his family in Liverpool to recuperate.

book REVIEW

Snuggle up under a blanket and get cosy with one of these winter warmers.

eing and fame about women, love, ag film g vin mo d an g An entertainin

Adapted from actor and writer Peter Turner’s memoir of the same name, Paul McGuigan’s new film is led by a duo of fantastic performances from Bening and Bell. Although it is 17 years since his breakthrough role in Billy Elliot, Bell still retains an endearing honesty and openness in his work and he is matched perfectly here by Bening. After failing to be nominated for an Oscar or BAFTA for her sublime work in 20th Century Women, one hopes that her stunning turn here

picks up some awards attention. Her Gloria Grahame is a masterclass in character study: bolshie but fragile, guarded but hopeful, an extrovert actress tired out and grown shy of her fading celebrity status. A huge crowd favourite on the festival circuit and made with real warmth, Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool is an entertaining and moving film about women, love, ageing and fame. The superb supporting cast includes Julie Walters, Kenneth Cranham and Stephen Graham as Peter’s somewhat star-struck family.

The Hygge Life

by Gunnar Karl Gislason Hygge is centred around the idea of feeling snug and inviting comforting elements into day-to-day life while creating warmth, community, and intimacy. A bakery is hygge. Bikes are more hygge than cars. This book shows readers how small gestures (putting wool blankets and warm cider out for guests) or larger undertakings (building bonfires and making campfire bread to celebrate solstice) can warm the psyche and foster hygge. Stunning photography throughout. URBAN FOX NOVEMBER 2017 59

In a world where citizens rehabilitate criminals, the Carer and the Murderer go for coffee and play badminton. PEOPLE & PLACES

LET IT SNOW! The weather outside is frightful, but there are lots of ways to enjoy winter, says Kirsty France.

Winter. I love it! While admittedly the lack of daylight can be a challenge, winter’s the perfect time to indulge in lots of wonderful activities. Here are just a few of my favourites…

Eat, drink…

My love of food means that I’m in an ongoing battle with my waistline. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a good salad in the summer, but my real favourites come into their own in cold weather. Every meal can be something warm and comforting; porridge for breakfast, soup for lunch and chilli or sausage and mash for dinner. Yum. Winter’s the perfect opportunity to dig out the recipe books from the back of the cupboard and conjure up some delicious winter warmers, or rediscover your favourite country pub for some proper hearty grub. For me, cold weather also means hot chocolate…with whipped cream, or

something mulled. Hmm, there goes the waistline again! In the run up to Christmas – I start earlier every year - every visitor to chez France is greeted with mulled wine or cider. The mixture of wine, spices, and fruit flavours really drives back the cold, and is perfect for reviving the spirits all winter long.

Get festive

There’s a farm park near me where insane people queue for an hour and a half to see Santa. I know, I was one of them! My eldest was only four but the entertainment was so good that he didn’t complain once. Whether you visit a grotto at your local garden centre or go all out with a trip to Lapland, a visit to see Santa is something special. Visiting with my children helped to remind me that it’s still magical and exciting to them. Take an afternoon off from the ‘to do’ list and enjoy.

Winter wonderland

I’m from a Scottish family so firmly believe that there is no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing. Shorter daylight hours can

make everyone feel down so getting out into the fresh air and sunshine is great for your mental health. We love walking through the woods when it’s frosty and building snowmen and tobogganing in the snow. We’ve even been known to fight the darkness with a bonfire in the garden. I’m never going skiing again (think Bambi on ice) but I love the mountains. A ski holiday or even a hiking break in the UK could be the perfect antidote to the winter blues.

Hibernate

While I love the outdoors, winter weather also gives you the perfect excuse to stay inside. Make your house cosy and cuddle up under a blanket on the sofa in front of a classic film. You don’t have to go any further than the kitchen for the popcorn. There I go again! Or, if you fancy a break, you could always escape to a country cottage with a roaring log fire, selection of board games and that book you’ve been trying to read since the beginning of the summer.

If all else fails, avoid winter altogether and book a holiday to South America… URBAN FOX NOVEMBER 2017 65

Life of Pi by Yann Martel

Chloe Ward “I love that I have been instrumental in growing something small into something significant”, says Joules Creative Director, Chloe Ward.

I was born and brought up in Market Harborough. I had a very happy family life, living with my parents “Rabbit and Chuckles” and my sister Lucy. My parents were liberal, extremely kind and supportive. It was a creative household, my mum did so much craft and art with us and made a lot of our toys. I really enjoyed school and found it hard to narrow my options afterwards. Eventually I decided to do a BA (Hons) in Fashion Design where I gained a 1st. During university, I really wanted to gain some real work experience, so sent some designs to a handful of companies. I worked in the holidays for Top Shop and Jasper Conran, after which Jasper Conran offered me a job. It was too good an opportunity to miss, so I took a year out of Uni to assist their Womenswear Designer. It was a small, creative design house and I was very inspired and learnt so much. I finished my degree and continued to work for them during my final year. I wanted to move back to Leicestershire because my now husband, Jolly, had

his business up there. I had worked for Tom Joule when I was a student on the Country Show and Event circuit. The business was very small, just 13 people worked there at the time and my friend Georgie asked if I could help them out. I had a job lined up at Next as a Trainee Buyer but decided I could help them for a couple of months before I started. On my first day I brought my computer in from home as they didn’t have one and set up my desk in a wonderful small barn in Marston Trussell. It was amazing, there was no one doing a creative role in the business apart from Tom and he was juggling so many things including managing the shows at the time. I quickly busied myself instigating all sorts of creative projects from designing the ranges, the website, the mail order brochures, the photoshoots, even the carrier bags. I decided to stay, I loved what Tom had already created and felt very connected to the business. My role has completely changed over the years, from doing everything to now directing teams of people. I love that I have been instrumental in growing something small into something significant, while staying true to our beliefs. I’m very excited about our AW collection. Boots. But in the fashion industry you always have to be looking ahead, so I’m already focussed on our spring/summer designs – an amazing holiday wardrobe and of course a great rainwear collection for the British Summer! Outside of work I am Mum to three wonderful boys – Felix (6), Monty (4) and Rufus (1). We live in a lovely village full to the brim with lively children! Last year myself and a group of parents thought it would be fun for the children to be part of a theatre production. Peter Pan was the first production of the Hallaton Youth Theatre, with 35 children aged 4 – 12 taking part, both on stage and behind the scenes. The children were absolutely amazing and the support of the local community was overwhelming. It was incredibly hard work but so rewarding for all involved. We’ll be back this year with the Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe.
