WORKSHOP 2 Friday 4pm-5.30pm 2A: PERFORMANCE 101 So you know a few songs - what now? Hugh & Fi McCafferty will teach you

how to use a microphone, how to talk to an audience and give you tips on how to wing it when everything turns to custard! The perfect chance to get over performance nerves among friends. ALL SKILL LEVELS 2B: PLAYING UP THE FRETBOARD ‘You paid for all those frets... now’s the time to use them’.

Bryan Tolentino will teach you different chord inversions up and down the neck and, just as importantly, show you how and when to use them for the best results. SKILL: ADVANCED 2C: UKESTRATION Tony Hansen will lead you in songs arranged into strumming and picking parts.

Choose strumming or an easy part (beginners) or one that challenges you (intermediates and those who can pick a C-scale). Enjoy playing in an ‘ukulele orchestra’ and have fun hearing the end result. 2D: DRUMMING FOR BEGINNERS Local percussionist Kane Tarres will introduce you to some

drumming techniques with a Hawaiian twist. Bring a drum, or some sticks to knock together, a cardboard box, or even the back of your ukulele. Anything to make noise, make rhythm and have fun.

WORKSHOP 3 Saturday 4pm-5.30pm 3A: BLUES, BOOGIE, RAGTIME Auckland’s Paul Jonson will teach you variable strumming

techniques, finger-picking and riffs and licks all with the realm and expression of 12-bar blues. Paul is an experienced performer and much sought-after ukulele workshop tutor. SKILL: INTERMEDIATE 3B: SYNCOPATION Michael O’Reilly covers many syncopated strumming styles but is very

fond of the old musical hall numbers made famous by the likes of George Formby. ALL SKILL LEVELS 3C: IMPROVISATION Using familiar songs, Tony Hansen will help you explore the skills of

improvisation using melody, chords and the spaces between notes and rythym. SKILL: INTERMEDIATE

WORKSHOP 4 Saturday 11.30am-1pm 4B: THE SINGING WORKSHOP Auckland singing coach Max Maxwell will focus on vocal confidence, breathing, pitch - and some tips on playing ukulele and singing at the same time.

THE HULA WORKSHOP

Saturday 9.30am

Saturday 11.30am

Hawaiian-style ukulele playing

4A: Hawaiian and Tahitian dancing

Bryan Tolentino is one of the most beloved and respected ukulele players in Hawaii today and we are thrilled to have him join us for our 5th Annual Geraldine Ukefest. A self-taught musician, Bryan is also a highly regarded ukulele instructor who takes the ‘give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach him to fish and he'll eat forever’ approach. In this hands-on workshop you will gain a basic knowledge of the unique and distinctive Hawaiian sound - intros, outros, strums, etc at the same time as learning a traditional Hawaiian song or two. ALL SKILL LEVELS

Zilla Steele teaches Hawaiian hula, both traditional and modern, as an alternative form of gentle exercise. It improves rhythm, balance, co-ordination and confidence. DANCERS You will learn one or two Hawaiian hula, and a Tahitian drum otea. WHAT TO WEAR: Socks, ballet shoes, soft-soled shoes (not sneakers) or barefeet. Dress-up in style with sarongs, long skirts or dresses, leis and flowers. UKULELE PLAYERS If you’re not a dancer but would like to put your new Hawaiian skills into practice, join in the fun with chords and lyrics available to accompany the dancers.
