Spelthorne added to government COVID-19 watch list Due to a continued rise in coronavirus cases, Spelthorne Borough has now been placed on the government’s COVID-19 watch list and is officially an ‘area of concern’. Data shows a sustained rise in coronavirus case numbers in Spelthorne that is out of step with the rest of Surrey, in particular, Staines-upon-Thames, Ashford, Stanwell, Shepperton, Sunbury-on-Thames, Halliford and all of the surrounding areas. Being an ‘area of concern’ does not mean there will be a local lockdown or closures at this stage, but it does mean that residents must be extra vigilant and follow government guidelines to stop the spread of coronavirus. • Follow the rule of 6 – as of Monday 14 September it is illegal to meet up in groups of more than 6 indoors and outdoors • Hands – wash them frequently for more than 20 seconds – this is the best way of stopping the spread of the virus • Face – wear face coverings on public transport and in shops unless you are exempt • Space – stay 2m away from anyone who is not in your household or your bubble Ruth Hutchinson, Surrey’s Director of Public Health said: “We are continually monitoring the data across the county, and we need to urgently call on residents across Spelthorne Borough to support us by reining in the spread of coronavirus. Spelthorne now has the highest rates of coronavirus in the South East. I know that people have made a huge effort over the last few months to control its spread, but it’s essential that we don’t get complacent now. Everyone needs to redouble their efforts before the situation gets worse. Spelthorne is now officially an ‘area of concern’ and the government is monitoring the situation closely. This means we are on the brink of more serious interventions. We have to all work together and do everything we can to avoid any further restrictions in the area.” Cllr John Boughtflower, Leader of Spelthorne Borough Council, said: “We are working closely with our partners at Surrey County Council and Public Heath England

to help prevent further spread of the virus and reduce the overall number of cases in the Borough. I am calling on residents to follow government advice - please remember – hands, face, space – keep washing your hands, wear face coverings when required, keep your distance from people outside your household, and don’t get together in groups of more than 6. We must all play our part to protect our community.” Kwasi Kwarteng, MP for Spelthorne, said: “This is obviously a concern for residents and businesses in the Borough, however I know that that Spelthorne Council are doing everything in their powers to control the spread of the virus, along with our numerous partner agencies and organisations, and are working hard to avoid a local lockdown situation. It is vitally important that we all stay disciplined and think about how our own actions, both in terms of keeping ourselves safe and helping to protect others, can contribute to controlling the virus within our Borough.” If you have Coronavirus symptoms – a persistent cough, high fever, or a change in smell or taste – then you should book a test by calling 119 or by visiting Slots are made available the evening before for morning appointments, and in the morning for afternoon appointments. Preventative measures are the best way to avoid local lockdowns.

Autumn Gardening – Top Tips & Trends Add instant colour to your garden, grow your own veg, and plant bulbs for spring colour Autumn is the perfect time of year to plant, as the soil is still warm from the summer sun, which encourages root growth, and moist from autumn rain. Choose plants that will add instant colour and drama to your garden now, grow your own winter vegetables, plant a fruit tree, or add spring flowering bulbs for beautiful blooms next year. So, get planting and you’ll soon see stunning autumn and spring colours in your garden! Instant Impact Plants “As the days shorten go for to bold, vibrant colours, moving away from pale pastel colours that are so popular in summer” says Sarah Squire, Chairman of Squire’s Garden Centres. Brighten your garden by adding asters and chrysanthemums, and put life back into your beds and containers, with dainty violas, cyclamen and pansies. Or for minimal effort and maximum impact you could buy a ready planted container, packed with plants to give you perfect autumn colour. Grow Your Own It’s so satisfying to grow your own fruit and veg and it’s very easy too. Now is the time to plant broad beans, cabbages, onions, garlic, peas, salad mixes and spinach. Autumn is also the best season to plant fruit trees such as apples, pears and plums – just give them time and they’ll reward you for years and years with glorious blossom in the spring followed by tasty fruit. Beautiful Bulbs Plan for spring and plant flowering bulbs now, and you’ll have beautiful blooms next year. “Bulb sales are booming this year. I would encourage people to buy now for the widest choice and freshest stock. Bulbs are very easy to plant, and there are so many beautiful varieties and colours available. Some of the most

popular bulbs to try include tulips, daffodils, crocuses, alliums and snowdrops” said Sarah Squire, Chairman of Squire’s Garden Centres. Get A Lush Lawn Now is the perfect time to get your lawn into shape. • Remove Moss Scarify your lawn with a rake to remove moss and weeds. Or if this sounds like too much hard work, then try a great product called ‘Mo Bacter’, an easy to use moss remover that ‘eats’ moss without turning it black, so you don’t have to rake it out! It is safe for children and pets, and can also feed your lawn for up to 100 days. • Aerate Your Lawn - Perforating the soil with small holes helps drainage, and allows water, air and nutrients to penetrate the grass roots, giving you a stronger and more vigorous lawn. Small areas can be spiked with a garden fork, or use a handheld hollow tine aerator. • Feed & Seed - Use a granular feed such as ‘Miracle-Gro Evergreen Autumn’ which releases a steady amount of nutrients over a period of weeks. Then fix any bare patches by overseeding. “If you’re not sure what to plant simply call into Squire’s and ask our friendly, knowledgably team for some free, expert advice” commented Sarah Squire, Chairman of Squire’s Garden Centres.

Online Christmas Concert - 12th December 2020 Celebrate Christmas with The Salvation Army on the 12th December, please visit our social media pages or website for further details on this virtual event nearer the time. As usual, we will be running a Christmas Present Appeal and hope to be able to support as many families as possible in our community at Christmas with gifts and food. On Christmas day, although we don't know how it will look because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we are still aiming to provide a meal for many who would otherwise be alone on the day so your support will be greatly appreciated. Again, updates of these events and the work that we do is available through our social media sites.

How has The Salvation Army supported residents of Ashford in response to COVID-19? Between March and the end of July, The Salvation Army has delivered over 1000 food parcels to 131 households in the TW15 postcode. That's equivalent to an estimated 7000 meals. We're grateful to a fantastic team of volunteers and drivers who have been willing to serve our community during this difficult time. We also give thanks to members of the public and local businesses who have donated food so generously, and Stanwell Food Bank and their team who have provided frozen ready meals for us to distribute. Volunteers have been offering prescription runs and shopping deliveries and our Pastoral Care Team have been keeping in touch with those who are isolated.

Support the work of The Salvation Army in TW15 The pandemic has had a big impact on our income streams. Any donation you are able to make towards our running costs will equip us to continue to serve our community.

Best of both worlds The world has changed, the way we work has changed, just a few short months ago how many people really stopped to think about their work/life balance? Those looking at slowly returning to a daily commute after months of working from home now have a choice to make, the daily grind of early mornings, and a long commute into London (not to mention the expense). It's enough to make you wonder who would choose to do this, having experienced the benefits of working from home. The endless tea is just one of the pros. That said, working from home is not always the utopia it sometimes made out to be - so, is there another way? YES! A local serviced office is a brilliant option for business owners who are looking for a short walk or a healthy cycle to work and time flexibility at the same time while working from a professional environment.

Wherever that may be. People need space, to think, to work, to plan, to talk, to collaborate, to host Zoom calls and virtual meetings, and that is not always easy to do from home, especially when the kitchen table has become to the new office. It has worked the past few months because it had to, but is it a long term solution? Your Home Office Away From Home. A local, low cost, self-contained office space with fast and secure internet, modern and light offices is the perfect balance, and The Powerhouse offers offices from 2 - 7 desks offering high-speed fibre broadband. One monthly charge includes security, lighting, heating, air conditioning, tea and coffee, cleaning, 24 hr access, reception, a secure reception and building, and your own lockable office.

Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is incredibly important, as is the ability to work in an environment that suits your business and your clients. If you have a company or work for that is focused on B2B, well, there is a certain level of professionalism that is expected, and rightly so. We have all been amused by some of the epic work from home fails we have seen over the past few weeks. If you have never worked from home and suddenly had to make it work, it can be a bit of an eye-opener. No doubt, many professionals are looking forward to getting back into the office!

With it's our very own board room that can seat up to 12 people comfortably, fully networked with a large screen perfect for presentations. The Powerhouse serve an eclectic mix of businesses working in a range of companies from Media, IT, Creative industries, Advertising, Graphics, PR, Marketing, and Internet-based companies, Management consultancy, HR, Training, and more. Are you looking to change the way you work? Are you looking to swap that long, expensive commute? Why not come and see us at The Powerhouse to see what we have to offer?

Robert Lodge – Life on the Frontline During COVID-19 When we think of our key-workers that have soldiered on throughout the lockdown, Funeral Directors are not necessarily the first profession that springs to mind. Our Chairman Robert Lodge gives us a little insight into life and work on the frontline during what has been potentially the most challenging time of his career. Q. What were your initial fears at the announcement of the COVID-19 pandemic? A. These are unprecedented times, and for most of us, particularly in our generation, it’s the first time we have had to respond to a worldwide crisis and adapt so quickly and so often, with government guidelines sometimes changing on a daily basis. The UK would have ground to a halt without our key-workers turning up for work every day, and as Funeral Directors we really were on the frontline. At first, whilst the medical information was being established, we were preparing for the worst. We believed there was a real threat of cross-infection if the deceased had died from COVID-19. This was fundamental to our work. During those first few weeks we were extremely concerned that, due to the contagious nature of the disease and our exposure to it whilst caring for families both prior to the funeral and on the day of the funeral, we would not have sufficient staff to carry out our duties. Q. Have the Branch Funeral Arrangers had to adapt the services they provide? A. Firstly, I am so grateful for the hard work and loyalty of my staff. Throughout this entire period I have had their full support. Our branch funeral arrangers are our ambassadors – they are trained to the highest levels in funeral administration, but more importantly they are experts at comforting the bereaved faceto-face, holding their hands physically and emotionally through the process. When restrictions were imposed, sometimes it was not possible for them to meet the bereaved in person, and arrangements were being made entirely by telephone. This was a real challenge for them when they are used to reaching out physically. But they have risen to the challenge and our client reviews prove that! I am immensely proud of all of them.

Q. Has all of this impacted the cost of a funeral? A. I’m a family man, as are all of the Directors of the Company, and we were aware that through the lockdown and furlough, many of our local families’ incomes were suffering. As a result, we actually lowered the cost of our funerals by as much as £500 for approximately three months at the height of the pandemic, and I believe we are the only Funeral Directors in the area to have done so. Q. How has this impacted your family life? A. Naturally, as a husband and a father, one’s instinct is to protect one’s family over and above everything else. In circumstances like these though, as a Funeral Director in a pandemic, we did not have the luxury of choice when so many people were depending on us. It was an impossible decision, to leave the house each day extremely fearful of what that day may hold, and what dangers you may end up bringing back to your family. Thankfully now we hope we are over the worst of it, and we can take time to reflect on the important things in life and make sure that we make extra time for family, friends and making memories.

Win Tickets To Hampton Court Ice Rink With Our Facebook Competition In October Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink, one of the highlights of the festive calendar, is back this winter with a host of exciting features to delight festive revellers at the Tudor Palace. Tickets are now on sale for the iconic open-air ice rink, which will feature an even larger ice rink – giving skaters more room to take in the spectacular views of the enchanting riverside palace and former home of King Henry VIII. New measures have been introduced this year to make sure that everybody can enjoy the Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink safely. There will be hygiene standards fit for a king or queen, with enhanced cleaning regimes and hand washing sanitation facilities available. Meanwhile staggered skate sessions will ensure fewer people on the ice at any one time. Skating is hungry work and revellers can satisfy their cravings at the Ice Rink Café and Bar, provided by Miss Polly’s, tucking into some hearty winter warming dishes, indulgent treats and a wide range of beverages. After taking a spin on the ice, visitors can make a whole day of it and discover 500 years of history inside the Palace, from the grand State Apartments to

King Henry’s magnificent Great Hall and Tudor kitchens. Rob Derry, Managing Director of Events at Arena, the ice rink management company said: “The safety of our guests is always paramount, so we’ve taken a host of measures to make the ice rink COVID-19 secure. All comply with the Gold Standard for COVID-secure temporary ice rink attractions, which has been created by a consortium of industry experts and incorporates measures that are in line with, or exceed, government guidelines.”

Hampton Court Palace Ice Rink is open daily from 20 November 2020 to 3 January 2021. Closed Christmas Day. For more information and to book The Local Magazine for Ashford, Laleham and Staines Upon Thames 24 tickets, visit

Campaign To Bring Spelthorne’s Stations Into Tfl Zoning For those within our community who are aware of us, and to those new arrivals to Spelthorne who may be unaware of our campaign, we are part of a group campaigning to bringing Tfl zoning to our Spelthorne stations (Ashford, Staines, Sunbury and Shepperton) for Oyster card fare ticketing, which is already used as payment on our bus services. This would make rail travel into and out of London into our stations more convenient and less expensive benefitting not only our residents but also businesses, schools and hospitals particularly, which have problems attracting and retaining the high and low skilled staff they need due to the expensive fares we suffer from being located on the border of the GLA but not in a tfl zone. Our nearest stations wIth Oyster card ticketing are Feltham and Hampton and from there another rail ticket is required for onward travel into our stations. We are supported by Spelthorne Council which has been incredibly supportive and together we are a stronger force and have made good progress.

Oyster ticketing does not extend to our stations, try to use their bank card to press out on the exit barriers. This type of payment cannot be used at our stations. We are currently in correspondence with the Department for Transport and have met with South Western Railways, the rail company that runs our train lines, to prove our case that there would be no loss of revenue as our research has indicated that footfall into our stations would increase with Oyster card fares. SWR have agreed to continue our meetings when the virus has ebbed and it is safe to do so.

Many rail users are unaware that, being so close to London and Heathrow Airport, Oyster card fares do not extend into our stations. This is a problem for visitors to Thorpe Park coming from the direction of London who exit the train at Staines to connect with designated transport to the entertainment park, often incurring fines for not having the extra ticket needed from Feltham, as well as many others who, unaware

Spelthorne strike gold at prestigious awards Spelthorne Council’s continued efforts to create a cleaner, greener and more colourful borough were recognised as this year’s prestigious South & South East in Bloom Awards. This year saw virtual judging being held and our Council rose above competition from hundreds of entrants to pick up four gold awards. Sunbury, Ashford and Staines Cemeteries all picked up gold awards in the same category. The ever-popular Sunbury Walled Garden also struck gold in the Small Park competition. This matches their successes from 2019. The judges’ comments read: “The Walled Garden is a valuable asset in training and developing horticulturists. The Council, staff and volunteers can rightly feel pleased and proud of their involvement, contribution to the management and maintenance of an outstanding walled garden. Congratulations and well done! You clearly deserve the Gold Award.” The annual South & South East in Bloom competition is designed to encourage councils,

residents and businesses to work together to improve the local environment and make towns and cities greener and cleaner for everyone. Cllr Bob Noble, Portfolio Holder for the Environment, said: “Spelthorne continues to do fantastically well to pick up so many awards in this competition. We are determined to create a cleaner, greener Spelthorne in order to enrich the lives of our residents. These awards are confirmation that we continue to maintain high standards and I would pay tribute to everyone who has helped us achieve these awards.”

Spelthorne Borough Council is stepping up its battle against litter with the launch of the #NoRubbishExcuses campaign. The Council frequently receives feedback from residents regarding the cleanliness of the Borough and know they are keen for us to do more to tackle littering. We, of course, realise the majority of residents do not drop litter and are grateful for their help and support in keeping local neighbourhoods clean and tidy. There is, sadly, a small minority of selfish individuals who persistently drop litter. The excuses for dropping litter are akin to ‘my dog ate my homework’, namely unbelievable because there is no excuse. If the bins are full, make the Council aware and take your litter home with you. We will be focusing our efforts on streets, parks, playgrounds, the river, wildlife and roads with the strapline #NoRubbishExcuses on posters you will see across the Borough.

open to everyone and we have been amazed by the community's response and determination. It has also been enjoyable to meet other like-minded people from our local area.

During lockdown our parks, green spaces and the River Thames were utilised and valued by a huge number of people in the Borough but sadly, alongside this came a substantial increase in antisocial behaviour from some members of the public and the volumes of litter and waste being left behind exceeded anything our enforcement teams have ever had to deal with. As we step into the recovery phase for the Borough with our highstreets back in business, leisure activities kick-starting and schools re- opening, we feel there is no better time to clean up Spelthorne!

The Great British Spring Clean was postponed this year and has been rebranded as the Great British September Clean. We will be urging residents, businesses and communities to become more litter aware and take pride in their local areas.

There are already regular litter pick events and groups running across the Borough who are energising the community and making a real difference. Local resident Shirley Lunn who recently helped form the Spelthorne Litter Pickers group and is a proud part of the litter picking community, said: “As residents of the Borough we can all play a part in ensuring our community is 9clean September and2020 safe and I welcome this new campaign to spread awareness in Spelthorne. Our group is Press release; No Rubbish Excuses

As American anthropologist said - 'Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world ”.

For details on how to litter-pick safely, please see their website: www.keepbritainvirus-guidance Cllr Richard Barratt, Portfolio Holder for Waste, said: “There are no excuses for dropping litter it is an incredibly selfish thing to do and damaging for the environment. We hope that our coordinated approach with the community, residents, businesses and stakeholders will see positive results and I ask that all residents support this scheme by sharing our messages, taking their rubbish home with them and, together, we can make a cleaner, greener Spelthorne.”
