Fascinating facts a) Following WW2 the British government controlled the supply of steel. Priority was given to supplying foreign-revenue-raising export businesses who exported at least 75% of production. The debt in 1946 was $241.86 billion, mostly owed to the US and Canada. b) British sports cars and motorcycles in particular were very popular exports right from the late 1940-80s particularly to north America and helped the UK Government pay back some of the Lend-lease payment levied at 2% per annum. The final payment of the Lend-lease ‘debt’ was made on the 29 December 2006 for the sum of about $83m USD (£45.5m) to the United States, and about $23.6m USD (£12m) to Canada; the 29th was chosen as it was the last working day of the year – 60 years on from the end of hostilities. c) Triumph Cars use tractor engines, sounds a myth – but its true! The TR24a used a wet sleeve 1991cc straight-4 Standard Vanguard engine. Essentially a similar engine used by the 1947 Ferguson TE-A20 tractor. A fine engine non-the-less and the basis of many Triumph TR engines (and Morgan Plus 4) for the next 20 years. d) Of the 101,081 MGA’s produced (1955-62) only 5869 were reserved for the UK home market. Most finding their way across the pond to the USA. I’ll be putting the next issue together soon and am looking for great photos of your classic. A good photo and up to 400 words would be great. As many need a bit of inspiration particularly when a rebuild is in progress. BTW: That’s not me on the tractor – its Harry Ferguson on his TE20, check out the story behind it later in this edition.

Like many people in the world I’ve found myself with more time during lockdown. Time to renew a skill I’d neglected – for me that’s drawing classic cars. Now it’s become a bit of an obsession!

I’ve worked my way through ‘British Sports Cars’ – post WW2 through to the late 1970s. Namely Triumph, Austin Healey, MG, a few bikes and the odd classic tractor too (well – I’m a farmer’s son!). The results can be seen in the following pages and are ready for printing on many garment or gift of your choice now, they are printed for you and there is no stock.

DucksWax has been developed by life-long motorcyclist Martin Chivers. He started riding aged 16 and progressed to high power bikes. He also became a competitive trials rider. This facilitated the need for proper leathers. When using the usual products on the market, he was consistently disappointed by the results. Either their smell or viscosity but mainly in effectiveness. With little or no lasting effects. Therefore in 2011 he set about developing DucksWax. Frog-eye or Bug-eye! These Sprites were produced in the MG Abingdon Factory, so although not an MG – it has an MG connection. Announced to the press in Monte Carlo by the British Motor Company (BMC) on 20 May 1958, two days after the Monaco Grand Prix. The Sprite was designed by the Donald Healey Motor Company. It first went on sale at a price of £669, using a tuned version of the Austin A-Series engine and other components from existing BMC cars to keep costs down.

Super Stylish MGA We can find no proof that Audrey Hepburn ever owned an MGA however our lookalike appears equally stylish as the MGA! The inspiration for the MGA came from a one-off car for the 1951 Le Mans race, driven by privateer George Phillips. In 1955 the MGA replaced the popular but oh so outdated MG T-Type (1936 designed). The T-Type had proven popular with US servicemen returning home after WW2. Its amazing to think that 94% of all MGA’s manufactured were exported – many destined for the USA.

Ferguson helped revolutionise 20th century agriculture in the late 1930s. His design of the 3-point linkage system meant a new kind of small engined tractor was developed with a range of mechanised implements to help increase production, particularly on small farms. The patented 3-point linkage was adopted by most tractor manufacturers – and is still in-use to this day. Illustrates Harry on his 700+ acre Cotswold estate, Abbotswood, England – now owned by David and Victoria Beckham. Between 1939-54, almost a million of these 20hp ‘Fergie’ type tractors were produced by Ford (under licence) and at the giant Ferguson Banner Lane factory in Coventry, England (TE20) as well as in the US Ferguson Park, Detroit in Michigan, USA from 1947 (TO20).

Midget Mk3,1500 MG Midget MkIII (1966–74). From 1966 the engine grew to 1275cc (from 1098cc) using the Mini-Cooper ‘S’ engine development. A detuned engine was used for reasons of model range placement. The Midget could have been faster than the more expensive MGB! Minor facelift changes were made to the body trim in late 1969 (1970 model year), with sills painted black, a revised recessed black grille, and squared off taillights (as on the MGB). The 13-inch Rubery Owen “Rostyle” wheels were standardized. In 1972 the square-shaped rear wheel arches became rounded between 1972-1974 and some consider the most desirable Midget. The 1500 engine and rubber bumpers were added in 1974 due to US safety legislation. The last Midget was produced on 7 December 1979. The last 500 UK home-market cars were painted black.

Subsequently rebuilt the engine (from three engines) as a Conrod snapped. We attend a lot of steam rally’s around the country with our Midget and special dog Memphis. He had his own photo shoot after being in the arena, so is quite a celebrity. My husband dresses as noddy and Memphis our rescue Staffordshire bull terrier dresses as bingles!

The early 1960s ‘B’ Development commenced as early as 1958 with a prototype at Abingdon code named MG EX205. The car was an innovative, modern design for the 1962 launch. It utilized a unitary structure, instead of the traditional bodyon-frame construction used on the outgoing MGA and the MGB’s rival, the Triumph TR series. The lightweight unitary design reduced manufacturing costs while adding to overall vehicle strength. Wind-up windows were standard, the driver’s compartment also offered plenty of legroom.

HIT THE BEACH RUNNING...

Showing respect for the fighting men who freed Europe from Nazi tyranny - by ordering (& wearing with pride), this terrific T-Shirt. Created to commemorate 75 years since the D-Day Landings in 2019, it depicts Brigadier General Theodore ‘Ted’ Roosevelt standing in his personalised ‘Rough Rider’ Jeep.

The General At the age of 56, Ted Roosevelt was the oldest serving officer to fight on the beaches – providing inspiration and cool leadership to GIs who followed him. A born soldier, he was the son of Theodore Roosevelt who led the cavalry charge at the Battle of San Juan Hill in Cuba during the Spanish American War of 1898.

The Jeep Some 640,000 Jeeps were built between 1941-5. Hugely successful, they were the practically indestructible workhorse of the Allied Forces in every theatre of war. The original design for the Jeep was put out to tender to 135 companies, giving them just 49 days to produce a working

prototype. Only three replied: Bantam, Willys-Overland and Ford. Ted called his personal vehicle the ‘Rough Rider’ as a salute to the volunteer cavalry regiment commanded by his father in 1898.

The Man Outstandingly courageous, Roosevelt was nevertheless seriously ill and died from a heart attack a month later. He was posthumously awarded the highest US military decoration - the Medal of Honor - for his D-Day heroism. As well as being the son of the 26th President, Ted Roosevelt was also related to FDR - president during most of World War II.

Had a weekend in Paris a few years ago and came across a French TR Register gathering at La Place de Concorde on a Sunday in mid November, it was their last gathering of the year. Great to see so many fine examples of TR2-7s, mostly TR6s but one or two TR5s. It was their 23rd end of year run. I’m sure they’ll be doing it again next year. GB Ed
