WORKING ON THE NIGHT MOVE

YOU know that old idiom that goes “As different as day and night?” Well, sometimes a home can be as different as day and night, depending on whether it’s day or night. Sometimes, someone will buy what they thought was a great home in a great location, only to find things weren’t quite the way they seemed. Here’s my suggestion. If you want to get a complete feel for the home you’re interested in, visit the neighbourhood at night. You may see the home in a different light, if you’ll pardon the pun. You may love what you see. You may not. HERE’S WHY When you look at property during the day, chances are the neighbours aren’t home. On a weekend, you may encounter neighbourly domestic bliss with lawns being mowed and children playing happily outside. When night falls, the teenager may plug his electric guitar into his amp and think he’s Jimi Hendrix reincarnated. Maybe the neighbour’s kitchen is within earshot of your living room and you’ll be treated to the clashing and clanging of pots and pans every night. On the one hand, the street may be lifeless and feel like a ghost town when you’d prefer some signs of life.

THAT NICE PARK ON THE CORNER The park could be a blessing – a pleasant place for relaxing or for the kids to hook up with other young people for a game of tag or soccer. You get to chat with other parents while your kids blow off steam. What’s it like at night? Is it quiet or noisy with older kids hanging around in the dark playing loud music? Are you OK with this?

SPECIAL EVENTS If you’re interested in a home in a gated community, the HOA may stage seasonal activities, such as Christmas carolling or trick or treating. These are wonderful community events and for many, a much anticipated time of the year. Does the HOA have in place rules to keep these events at manageable levels? How many guests are residents allowed to bring? Is there supervision so the youngsters don’t get too enthusiastic? WHO LIVES NEXT DOOR? Who will you live next to? It would be prudent to find out who lives next door. There’s no harm knocking on the door to introduce yourself and to explain that you’re considering buying the house next door. Can they offer any advice? Your potential neighbour will want to know who may be buying the home next to theirs as well.
