Evans promises to fight for workers and strive towards a liveable wage By RASHAD ROLLE Tribune Senior Reporter rrolle@tribunemedia.net BERNARD Evans has resigned as president of the National Congress of Trade Unions of The Bahamas and will become the chief labour consultant/negotiator for the government. His resignation was confirmed in a letter dated January 23 sent to Dwayne Woods, the second vice-president of the organisation.

Mr Evans insisted yesterday that he is not abandoning the labour movement and said he believes he can help from within the government. His letter said: “Please advance to the Central Council of the NCTUB the tendering of my resignation as president of the National Congress of Trade Unions of The Bahamas effective immediately.”

AS COVID-19 case numbers continue to trend downward, a local senior physician has said it may be time for officials at the Ministry of Health to begin discussions about easing restrictions. On Sunday, there were 29 new cases of the coronavirus reported in the country. Twenty-six of these cases were in New Providence, one was in Grand Bahama and two were in Eleuthera. SEE PAGE FOUR

MINNIS ‘UNFAMILIAR’ ON CONTRACT TERMS By RASHAD ROLLE Tribune Senior Reporter rrolle@tribunemedia.net

FORMER Prime Minister Dr Hubert Minnis says he is not familiar with the contract of former Director of the Disaster Reconstruction Authority Katherine Forbes-Smith, adding that the government is entitled to challenge any irregularities it claims to find. “I have not seen the lawsuit and I am not at this point in time familiar with the contract,” he said.

Mrs Forbes-Smith, who was appointed to the post under the Minnis administration, is seeking contractual damages of over $408k for alleged breach of her contract. She alleged in a writ filed in the Supreme Court that the damages include $238,333.16 for 26 months’ salary; $65k in housing allowance; $32.5k in duty allowance, $6,500 in fuel allowance and $66k in gratuity entitled at the end of her contract. FIRE FAMILY TAKES KEYS FOR NEW HOME ONE family received the keys to their new home less than a year after a massive fire on Jennie Street left them and several other people displaced. Last May, a huge blaze destroyed six homes and damaged four others on Jennie Street. Weeks later, President of Arawak Homes Franon Wilson announced a “home incentive offer” to the victims who wanted to build a home after the tragedy.
