FRONT PAGE NEWS The press and fashion have always had a special relationship. The proof is this exhibit of the best covers from the trendy, avant-garde magazine Numéro at Atmosphère’s. Also not to miss, at Shibuya, front pages of the fashion-oriented magazine WeAr, which mixes art and fashion, and the EJF exhibit at So Ethic.
SO ETHIC, 5 YEARS ALREADY Five years ago, PRET A PORTER PARIS® was the first fashion trade fair to offer an area for ethical designers to express themselves. A visionary initiative. Today, taking a stand on the link between style and planetary responsability is a given. So Ethic has become essential. Its success has not changed the requirements for selection : to exhibit at So Ethic, a brand must answer certain criteria which guarantee a truly sustainable approach. To celebrate this anniversary, we feature the best creations which respect man and the environment. Focus on an ethical showroom from the United States : For the first time, So Ethic welcomes an American showroom. The trendy “Now Showcase” is an agent for ready-to-wear, accessories and, in a larger sense, independent, responsable lifestyle brands. The ten designers exhibiting develop small, local production runs and invest in sustainable approaches without neglecting style. A must to discover. Hall 7.1

THE FIVE COMMANDMENTS OF PRET A PORTER PARIS® THAT SET THE TONE FOR FALL-WINTER 2011-2012.
PUMP UP THE VOLUME ! This season, we show off shapes. Gone are straight lines and perfect hems ! To follow in the season’s tone, we build up and show off shapes ! A long umbrella skirt rembroidered with an enormous flower from Susan Wagner, waists defined by wide belts and « puffy » knit sleeves at Elfer Castro, a bubble coat at Greenfit … the silhouette inflates or lengthens disproportionately, it is divided or constructed. Designers sculpt looks by using special effects for sleeves, belts or pleats. Visual and arty.
SLIP ON A KNIT DRESS
LET’S DRESS UP OUR EXTREMITIES
Because it prettily dresses up the body and is worn easily with leggings or jeans, ballerinas or pumps … the knit dress is a must. Supple, reassuring, heavy or light, in solids or jacquards … For Fall-Winter 2011-2012, it is ideal for any occasion
Long, fringed or brightly-colored gloves at Imoni, crazy caps at Chaos Brothers, fur cuffs at Ateliers Parisiens for… and also legwarmers, muffs, hats. Extremities inspire designers. At a time when basics reign, accessories becomes essential. They can transform a garment and update it for the season. Or they can change a look : a precious fabric cuff dresses up a sweater or shirt for evening while legwarmers give a boost to a classic outfit.
SCARVES, THE NEW NECKLACE
A SWIRL OF A CAPE Aristocratic and sporty, gallant and contemporary … the cape adapts to all desires and styles. Short or long, in knit at Tambour Paris, in fur at Sprung Frères or P&T Furs, in velvet at Voriagh, in wool edged with feathers at Rebekka Ruetz … Like a cocoon, it envelops the silhouette and reassures us. It protects the body to better validate its appeal. This is an item which will certainly be back at center stage !
They are everywhere. The scarf is the season’s must. And without a doubt, the new necklace. Once qualified as a neckerchief, which narrowed its possibilities – very quickly – to give it a preppy connotation and mean it was often forgotten at the bottom of a drawer … it gets its revenge for Fall-Winter 2011-2012. Short, long, solid, arty, classic, rock, floral … We knot it, wrap it, play with its motifs. We love wearing it because designers have started using it again. In the image of a painter’s canvas, squares and shawls are ideal grounds for expression, especially for textile designers. The proof with Just for (me) : this lovely brand only sells scarves - exclusive, poetic, contemporary prints in a surprising, delicate color range. A must accessory for all necks !
IT’S IN THE AIR
CONSUMER DESIRES FOR FALL-WINTER 2011-2012, DECIPHERED BY ALEXANDRA SENES A refusal of passivity and taking back what is public are at the heart of Fall-Winter 2011-2012 trends. After having experienced the consequences of a worldwide crisis, the individual becomes a citizen once again. The result : he or she innovates while acknowledging everyday necessities and is full of creative energy while envisioning a more thought-out, reasonable future. She uses collages, mixes and blends … but also gleans and discovers special tidbits. She hunts everywhere, taking inspiration from everything, renewing with values of handicrafts and workmanship to create her own universe. This universe, designed to last, is found in the season’s three strong attitudes captured by Alexandra Senes who deciphers, analyzes and illustrates them in the informative, practical Trendswash forum at PRET A PORTER PARIS® Hall 7.1
IT’S ALREADY TOMORROW
« CLAN-À-PORTER© » LIFE IS STYLIZED This is a new social, economic and ideological class. A population composed of « in the know » hipsters who watch for trends, are on the cutting edge of cool and hunger for handcrafted know-how. Clan-wear© appears to be « something » while remaining nonchalant. Hipsters « think Glocal » by mixing local with their enthusiasm for global. We have identified seven branches of hipsters, they can be united without having a uniform. On one hand the Neo(n)-wear clan appropriates colors with disco hedonism : oversized accessories, explosive makeup and bright tones reflect a desire to transform the everyday into a party. On the other hand, the Rustic-wear clan prefers to mix rough materials and flea markets finds with technical, ultra-light fabrics. Next to them, the Romantic-wear clan emphasizes naivety, romanticism, « consuming looks » and showing off their lifestyle. The Brand-wear clan is eccentric and slightly decadent, living in a lavish, flashy world where brand names are vital. The Luxury-wear clan incarnates sober values and works to arrive at an ideal of intelligent luxury. The Intello-wear clan are social, political and cultural analysts who cultivate a retro style that is almost corny. The Utopia-wear clan are sticklers for purity, they adore contemporary art and architecture, are marked by the 80’s or Japan and remain attached to a slightly-dated strictness. In this trend, each person stylizes his life based on his clan without blending into the masses. Concretely … On a basic items – pants, shirt, cardigan – each sub-clan (a tattoo artist or instant image maker) adds a strong, personal detail. Extra-wide blouson for Neo(n)-wear, aristocratic cape for Brand-wear, worn out T-shirt for Rustic-wear …
« MATCHWORK© » STYLES BLEND TOGETHER
ALL ILLUSTRATIONS © MARIANNE RATIER
The Matchwork clan explodes codes in bold, unexpected associations of prints, colors, textures and shapes with a daring appeal. Behind this apparent chaos is a driving, carefully defined force : a chosen, constructed accumulation. The garment becomes a costume, its appeal is a parody. In this creative heap, there is a desire for self-mockery. We are intrigued and ultimately convinced by these deliberate, sublimely strange fashion faux pas on the border of good taste. A true visual « car wreck ». Concretely … This is the unexpected, daring meeting between houndstooth micro-trousers and an angora sweater with flashy stripes or a classic mat jersey skirt and a shiny vinyl top. Here, everything is a pair two textures, two colors, two fabrics. « EDITORIAL LINE » SETS THE TONE With sobriety and carefree chic, the Editorial Line family takes refuge in fundamental values. For them, black is no longer Gothic or representing intello-left-wing architects, it isn’t even a little black dress. Black rhymes with humility. It works best in textures and pure, impeccable shapes. This girl only slips on perfectly cut pieces. She subtly plays with fabric blends, cultivating a constantly renewed creativity. She handles the right balance between control and letting go, tension and blurriness, strictness and curves. A timeless, always modern classiness. Concretely … The silhouette is elongated and feminine with sexy straight skirts or sensual men’s pants with too-long legs for defined lines and new shapes. The waist is high, the décolleté clean on a small bust.
PRIZES FOR SUCCESS Each year, the Paris Capitale de la Creation awards is a big event. The opportunity for PRET A PORTER PARIS® to feature exceptional brands.
MIKI MIALY Paris Capitale de la Création Prize for Atmosphère’s Japanese designer Miki Mialy, a graduate of the Gakuen Fashion School in Osaka, launched her ready-to-wear brand in Paris in 1992. She quickly opened a boutique-showroom in the French capital to present her high-end collections where a feminine mood is always accompanied by a special twist to make a difference or an intriguing detail which attracts attention. Each woman can make these clothes her own and be beautiful without feeling restricted. Her know-how and unique viewpoint deserved to be in the spotlight.
DU POIL DE LA BÊTE Paris Capitale de la Création Prize for The Box A funny name for fun jewelry collections. Or rather jewelry with humor mixing together a rock mood with references to cartoons, fairy tales and princess jewelry … Designer Cécile de Rembauville, who did a stint as an accessories designer at Christian Dior, transforms lace into chains, mixes rhinestones with jersey and plays with different references. She reconciles the untameable woman with an innocent softness.
SPRUNG FRÈRES Paris Capitale de la Création Prize for PRET A PORTER PARIS® The wonderful Sprung Frères story is about a family in the fur business who has been passionate about women since 1892. Over a century after its creation, the company still follows fashion trends. Sold in the world’s most beautiful boutiques, it calls upon young, talented designers or more well-known names to creatively direct some of its collections. Zip-back sweaters, oversized coats, sleeveless tunics … fur is trend and desirable. A chic, creative « must-have ».
GREENFIT let’s talk about shape ! Nipped-in jackets, fitted coats and dresses, worked sleeves and shape games … Greenfit plays the card of precision and sobriety. Their garments are impeccably cut and the color range is seasonless. It’s impossible not to succumb to these never-goout-of-fashion basics with a special touch that makes all the difference. Atmosphère’s
BETTY JANIS responsable poetry Betty Itier is a textile designer. Since the start of her professional career, she discovered fashion’s impact on the environment. Thus was born the idea of her label – Betty Janis – which respects mankind and the planet. It is not about changing the world, just her desire to inject poetry in the wardrobe while limiting pollution. Her first Summer collection set the tone with one-size-fits-all pieces in 100% recyclable polyester that can be fitted and transformed, like 2-in-1’s. So Ethic
HOT FRITURE a touch of fashion « cuisine » A bit of French flair, a dose of Danish references … this is Hot Friture’s recipe for success. This spirited brand proposes simple pieces with lots of humor. We adore their comfortable cuts, pretty fabrics, fluid silhouettes … they inspire us with their wonderful joie de vivre. Shibuya
ATELIERS PARISIENS that extra detail Esther M Angel is an adventurer … She spent her childhood in Morocco and then traveled the world, developing a passion for modern art before working at the haute couture house Carven and eventually creating her brand, Ateliers Parisiens. From this rich path, she retains a taste for beautiful fabrics and feminine embellishments. She uses multiple references which result in details such as lace bib fronts, wool collars inset with rhinestones or necklaces mixing beads and fabric flowers. Atmosphère’s
CABANEKABAN LA QUEUE DU CHAT all beautiful, all organic The first good thing about this pretty children’s line for 0-10 year olds : it uses only organic cotton from free-trade commerce for its collections. The second excellent idea : naive, joyous motifs are worked in a palette of delicate colors. Cute bodysuits with funny animals for babies, T-shirts and comfortable, soft dresses for bigger kids. An ideal everyday wardrobe for little ones. So Ethic
variable geometry Rie Abe imagines her bags as one-of-a-kind pieces, small works of art adapted to everyday life. The philosophy of her Cabanekaban brand is simple : offer handcrafted collections based on a geometric mood. Inspired by origami, a dress décolleté or a plastic supermarket bag, these timeless creations surprise and go from season to season with their endearing appeal. The Box

LES FRENCH DEMOISELLES

After studying at Copenhagen’s Fashion and Design School, she launched the MYDLDR brand in February 2010. This pretty brand develops a tender, yet sensual wardrobe. Fanny, the designer knows how to set up a soft, personal universe full of surprises. She borrows a retro mood with contemporary elements, takes inspiration from French Provence motifs for unexpected touches and blends sublime Calais lace, organic cotton and recycled silks from haute couture. Her perfectly-cut and finished dresses, manufactured with an ethical consciousness, hide delicious details : discrete piecings, bows emphasizing hips, games of transparencies … An ideal, conjugated, feminine mood. Shibuya

It is, first of all, Isabelle and Louise, two friends from Parisian workshops who create, on four hands, necklaces, chains and bracelets or «tritons barbus», heavy with pearls and knick-knacks, real pearls and charms discovered from forgotten boxes or bric-à-bracs along unusual routes. Their creations, subtly orchestrated unique pieces, are humorously and poetically an incredible universe.
FASHION SHOWS FROM PARIS Fashion protection On the fashion planet, some designers are like gods. Nathalie Queyraud, the name behind this jewelry brand, had the fun, off-beat idea of placing « clothes addicts » under Fashion Protection. Concretely, this results in a collection resembling rosary beads, assembled as expected, but embellished with enamel silhouettes of key runway personalities. Alber Elbaz, Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano or even Sonia Rykiel … Her pieces, depicting the sacred characters of this milieu, will quickly become cult objects ! The Box
