The Cat Poem

Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray this cushy life to keep. I pray for toys that look like mice, and sofa cushions, soft and nice. I pray for gourmet kitty snacks, and someone nice to scratch my back, for windowsills all warm and bright, for shadows to explore at night. I pray I’ll always stay cool, and keep the secret feline rule, To never tell a human that the world is really ruled by cats! Animals for Adoption starts on page 20. Help save a life by visiting your local animal shelter. You just might find your new best friend/ ruler of the world!

Federal Trade Commission

2020 Census Facts

The Federal Trade Commission is working with the U.S. Census Bureau to help guard you against potential census scams by explaining how the 2020 Census process works. Knowing what information you will and will not be asked for will help you spot and report scams. In mid-March 2020, the Census Bureau will start mailing out (in some areas, hand delivering) invitations to participate in the 2020 Census. You should get yours by April 1. You can respond online, by phone, or by mail. The Census Bureau’s job is to count every person living in the United States. Starting in May 2020, census takers will start visiting homes that haven’t responded to make sure everyone is counted. If you aren’t home or can’t come to the door, the census taker will come back up to six times. Each time, they’ll leave a door hanger with a phone number so you can call to schedule a visit. The census questionnaire asks how many people are in the home at the time you complete the form; their sex, age, race, ethnicity; their relationships to one another; phone number; and whether you own or rent the home. Scammers may pose as census takers to get your personal information and then use it to commit identity theft and other frauds. But there are ways you can identify official census takers. Census takers must show a photo ID with the U.S. Department of Commerce seal and an expiration date. If you ask, the census taker will give you a supervisor’s contact information and/or the census regional office phone number for verification. The Census Bureau will never ask for your full Social Security number, bank account or credit card numbers, money or donations, or anything on behalf of a political party. The 2020 Census will not ask citizenship status. The Census Bureau may call you as part of their follow-up and quality control efforts. They also might call if you’re not home when a census taker stops by or when a personal visit is not convenient. Calls will come from one of the Census Bureau’s contact centers or from a field representative. Since caller ID cannot be trusted, visit How to Identify a Phone Call from the Census Bureau for the phone numbers you can use to check out any calls you might get: census.gov/ programs-surveys/surveyhelp/verify-asurvey.html#call. Visit 2020census.gov for the latest information. If you suspect fraud, call 800-923-8282 to speak with a local Census Bureau representative. n

with the rear seat backs folded down. Making the basic solid structure under the Corolla Hatchbac is a new platform which is shared by many other Toyota vehicles. Sharing platforms is a common practice throughout the automotive industry, and this structure is shared with everything from Prius to Avalon. Obviously, though it is the basis it is modified for each application. Here it gives the front-wheel drive Corolla a rigid platform for its front strut and rear multi-link suspension system. Power is supplied by a 2.0-liter fourcylinder gasoline engine that adequately pushes the Corolla with 168 horsepower and 151 lb.-ft. of torque. While this combination isn’t the most impressive on launch, it serves this application well with good confident power for getting through on-ramp entry and passing slower vehicles. While we are not overly impressed by most Continuously Variable Transmissions (CVT) the one Toyota has equipped the Corolla with features a sporty feel that is better than many. Toyota engineers did this by developing a real mechanically geared first gear that gets the Corolla going at startups. Paddle shifters allow manual shifting through the CVT’s simulated 10 gears. Though we didn’t get a chance to drive the manual transmission equipped Corolla Hatchbac we are happy Toyota continues to offer this gear box. We just hope it continues to do so, bucking the trend to eliminate them altogether. Behind the wheel the Corolla Hatchbac provides a comfortable and supportive front bucket seat that holds driver snugly

The Trader presents

Megan Walsh “We Are All God” In August I was waiting in the Heartwood parking lot for a ride out to the Island Mountain picnic when I saw someone I knew. The Sycamore leaves were By Che Colston full-on yellow and huge, the sky royal blue, and the air perfect. I hadn’t seen Megan Walsh in years. It was great that she was driving by and had the time to stop and say hi. At that time we caught up on a few things and she told me she was working at Heartwood Mountain Sanctuary as operations and programs manager. Since it was summer at the time we also discussed plants and gardening and plant spirits which led to me asking her for a Trader interview. When I asked her what brought her from a suburban neighborhood in Massachusetts to Humboldt County, she said at age 16 she traveled to a boarding school that taught wilderness training near Redding, California. From there they regularly traveled over 299 to jog 10 miles along the Avenue of the Giants and drove down into Shelter Cove to hike The Lost Coast trail. She graduated in 1999 and was accepted to HSU when she was called back to Massachusetts to be with her grandmother as she received chemotherapy for lung cancer.

While there she enrolled at MassBay College and took her grandmother to her doctor appointments. As her grandmother improved she found another opportunity to come west by attending college at beautiful Portland’s Lewis and Clark College for the fall semester. As she spoke of attending there she told me how her father had saved money her whole life for her to go to college. While there she admittedly felt a little guilty having so much fun exploring the Hood River area until a bad sprain kept her from attending college the following fall.

THE EMERALD TRIANGLE’S CANNABIS CONNECTION

She found “Humble” County, as she thought it was called, by attending the very last Pignick at the Hog Farm. Here she met Ogre who as far as I know created a great strain of cannabis and a reputation that varies...depending on who you know. She decided after a few months of communication and a strong desire to be nearer to the infamous Humboldt weed, to come to Humboldt County and work with Ogre. And after awhile she found a job in a cannabis garden near Heartwood in the early 2000s. After a length of time she bought land about 15 minutes walking distance from Heartwood and did remarkable work that all of us on Palo Verde could see from the road passing through her land. She raised sheep moving fences and keeping the land cleared. A few years ago she got hired to be the operation and program manager at Heartwood and walked through snow on her first day at work. Last Tuesday we met at the same place we had seen each other in August. The Sycamore leaves, most all were fallen from the row of trees in the parking lot. Like magic. That is what I was thinking as she offered me choices about where we could have our interview. She mentioned the point...a well known area near the barn that looks out over the mountains. There are benches and a fire pit. With many clouds and the sun breaking We Are All God - Cont. on page 31

through just often enough to keep our faces warm, we had an hour and a half together where it seemed to me that all of her words were like water flowing to places on a river that brought her to this confluence in time. She mentioned in her calm way some amazing books that influence her. Lynne McTaggert’s The Field and two sequels. Findhorn was another one. She asked me if I knew about that and I had heard of it but not studied it. It was built on the sand for one thing. All of the people that ever go to the far corner of a trailer park in Scotland...listen to the devas and elementals who give instruction about how to communicate with plants, are forever changed. “One of my passions is listening to the land,” Megan told me. “Whether hiking, gardening, pruning trees or foraging for mushrooms, I am in a silent conversation with nature. I ask for guidance and usually have a feeling in response that shows me my next steps. I’ve learned and discovered so many things through this practice. For example, I’ve been drawn to Huckleberries when they are perfectly ripe, or a wild strawberry in its prime. I found that I’ve incorporated many of these teachings into many aspects of my life and work. So no matter how busy I may be, I make sure I find the time to walk in nature once a week. My goal for this new year is to allow myself the time once a day.”

worked at The General Store in Harris were hanging out and someone walked up to her and said, “This is the key!” And when Megan asked what the key was the person told her it was adrenal glands from a deer. So when she woke she researched and found that some tribes would hunt and keep the adrenal glands for its vitamin C to fight off scurvy. Later on when she really did go to the General Store...she told the same employee that had been in her dream about her dream and he said oh yeah we just got this product in called Adrenal DMG. The Findhorn Community believes plants are magic beings...that when humans communicate with them and recognize their subtle levels...they are overjoyed. A lot of us in “Humble” County believe that...actually...so it does not surprise me that we have collected here in this county to grow what I consider the most renowned strains of cannabis in the world. And we are, most of us, humble about that. We offer energy and are given energy. Out there on the point as we ended our interview, we spoke of acknowledging the land with humble offerings done to honor the spirit in everything. “It is a time to awaken” is the message from the Findhorn Community, from Heartwood Mountain Sanctuary and other communities who believe in listening to the beings and deities in the spirit of plants and stone. Thank you Megan. Your energy and your work at Heartwood brings us together. In the next issue I will interview Lauren Schmidt and Tanya Horlick of KMUD News. On the other side of that there’s cannabis that helped me sleep, put me into a healing state of being where I was relieved from stress and anxiety as well as feeling the pain relief.” ~ Eben Britton, offensive lineman for Jacksonville Jaguars & Chicago Bears.

The Smartphone Poem Amazing what all this here smart phone has got. TV and Weather and Internet, too. There’s just no limits to what it can do. Check my blood pressure and my temperature without even probing all my apertures. I now know the time in Paris or Greece. I can track the migration of thousands of geese Or find Chinese food; it’s here on this map. Oops, my finger just slipped, now where was that at? A camera...a CAMERA! Now I can take shots of everyone I know (who’d rather I not). Push this here button and take me a “selfie.” (If it had a nose would this thing take a “smellfie”?) Email to pester with, video to shoot, maps to drive ‘round with, wow that’s a hoot! A compass to guide me home if I’m lost. Thank God work paid for this thing (what it COSTS!). The things that it does would amaze Mr. Bell. What he would have thought of it, no one can tell. But one question’s still stuck in my middle-aged craw. Despite all the gizmos that strike me with awe. They’re fun and they’re useful and “techy” and all...but how do I just simply make a phone call? n

in place. This compact feels roomy in the front but a bit tight in the rear seat. The interior is dressed with contrasting stitching across the dash that tends to be polarizing, either you really like it, or you don’t. It adds character to what can be a bland component in vehicles. We think the exterior design sets off the Toyota entry into the compact hatchback category giving the Corolla Hatchbac its very own personality that projects a sporty, confident image combining it with a personality that is both eye catching and fresh. The Toyota Corolla Hatchbac adds a lot of character to the compact segment while offering a whole lot of bang for your buck. Disability Benefits Available to Vietnam-era Blue Water Navy Veterans

Real Estate

NEED SOME CASH IN A FLASH... BETTER SELL THAT OLD THING! The deadline for the next Trader is Thurs, Jan. 23rd 2020

Blue Water Navy Veterans or their survivors are now entitled to a presumption of service connection for conditions related to Agent Orange exposure. Staff at the Humboldt County Department of Health & Human Services Veterans Service Office (VSO) can help those that are eligible apply for benefits. Blue Water Navy (BWN) Veterans are those who served aboard a vessel operating not more than 12 nautical miles seaward from the demarcation line of the waters of Vietnam and Cambodia, between January 9, 1962 and May 7, 1975. The Blue Water Navy Veterans Act of 2019 (Public Law 116-23), which took effect on January 1, 2020, extended the presumption of service connection to include BWN Veterans. These former service members are now presumed to have been exposed to herbicides such as Agent Orange during their military service and may be entitled to benefits related to that exposure. To qualify for disability compensation benefits, veterans must have one or more of the conditions associated with Agent Orange exposure. Those are listed in Title 38 Code of Federal Regulations section 3.309(e). Eligible survivors of deceased veterans may also file claims for benefits. Blue Water Navy Veterans will need a copy of their DD 214 discharge form to confirm eligibility or to reopen a previously denied claim. VSO staff can help former service members obtain a DD 214. For more information, contact the VSO at 707-445-7611, or visit the office at 1105 Sixth St., Suite F, Eureka. Dept. of Health & Human Services humboldtgov.org
