This weekend was big for Baltimore and Towson sports. In addition to TU’s third home game in a row against Stony Brook, students were traveling to the city to watch the Orioles sweep the Detroit Tigers in the American League Divisional Series. In preparation for the series, the team held a pep rally in Towson near the court house, and on Saturday, the excitement turned to Johnny Unitas Stadium.

After my first Latin Class of 2013 graduate A m e r i c a n Former SGA Attorney General Student Organization meeting during my freshman year five years ago, I walked away feeling a little disappointed.

During the meeting it felt like something was missing and that my Latino culture wasn’t being fully represented.

While I complained to a friend about how discouraged I felt, his response surprised me: “If you don’t like it, what are you going to do about it?”

At first, I didn’t think I could do anything about it. I was a freshman and brand-new to an overwhelming campus. But his challenge stuck with me, and my sophomore year I gained the courage to commit to officially joining the organization.

I started doing little things like saying hi to people I didn’t know, and being more intentional about getting to know other students to make sure they felt welcomed — whether they were Latino or not. The group started to feel like a much more familiar representation of what I knew my culture to be, and I ended up President of the organization.

member in Chicago. The opportunity gap facing low-income students in this country is staggering, as is the underrepresentation of Latinos in the teaching profession.

Although nearly one out of four U.S. citizens will identify as Hispanic by 2040, just 8 percent of teachers identify as such. But just as my friend framed my disappointment with LASO as a solvable problem, Teach For America acknowledges these gaps as significant, but closeable.

The reality that certain groups of kids don’t have access to equal opportunity because of where they were born contrasts a foundational promise of our country — this idea that if you work hard, you will succeed.

Too often, hard work is not enough to overcome the significant barriers of poverty and systemic oppression.

Thinking about changing this on a nationwide scale overwhelms me. But when I see the faces of my seventhgrade reading and writing students, change no longer becomes a possibility, but a necessity.

When my kids enter my classroom, I make sure they know I’m human.

Every Friday, we have a community circle where we share our highs and lows for the week.

Last week, I told my kids my high was that my dad called me that morn-

ing. I could see the surprise in their faces: “She has a dad?” Kids focus so much on passing tests, finishing homework and getting through the day that they often don’t get the chance to get to know their teachers as people.

As a Latina, I treat opportunities to get to know my students personally with extra care.

Many of my students are also people of color, and I strive to lead by example for them.

I want them to see a fellow person of color pushing through the challenges to succeed, so that they can do the same. I don’t have all the answers. My students can teach me just as much as I can teach them.

But I am willing to do whatever it takes to help my students succeed. I show them that I care about them, that I know they are capable and that I believe with all my heart they can and will achieve their dreams.

This Hispanic Heritage Month, it is an honor and a privilege to serve my students alongside 3,000 Latino Teach For America corps members and alumni and thousands of other corps members, alumni and partners from a range of backgrounds. As you consider what you are going to do about the injustices that surround you, I hope you consider joining us.

Disappointed in administration over tailgating policy

The administration has a Towson State University mindset in a Towson University era.

Whether a lack of understanding, capabilities, willingness or naiveté resulted in the perplexing decision to put the spotlight on Towson Football tailgating, one thing is clear: Towson administration owes students, alumni and especially the Department of Athletics an apology.

Over the years I have worked with many University leaders and have found them to be open, caring and respectable leaders. While I am hesitant to abandon this opinion, the

spotlight should be on them, not on tailgating.

The threat made to students to suspend the Sept. 27 tailgate, as well as all additional tailgates, was irresponsible and excessive for many reasons.

First, it showed everybody in the Towson community, such as students, alumni, locals and families, that the Towson administration would rather try to avoid perceived issues and problems rather than try to solve them and maintain one of Towson’s most cherished traditions.

Second, the threat, and the following proposed solution, continues to show that the administration cannot deal with problems that by no means are specific to Towson University.

Furthermore, this threat was partially based on personal opinions and not concrete facts in regards to tailgating’s role in contributing to the results of the Maryland College Alcohol Survey.

Lastly, this threat was made at the near complete exclusion of input from student leaders and the campus community.

While I understand that the proposal to suspend tailgating was not officially proposed or voted on during the President’s Council meeting, it was an irresponsible and unfortunate way for Towson administration to attract attention to the issue.

Equally as unfortunate was the resulting decision to force students to attend a workshop in order to park at the tailgate. The administration had many resources at its disposal prior to the Sept. 27 game that could have resulted in establishing an effective policy. For starters, increased enforcement of the current policy should have been the centerpiece of the new solution.

The Big Picture: The food chain

The squirrels on this campus are nuts (pun intended). On a regular basis, they allow students to come into close proximity with them on their turf.

They have no issue disregarding where we choose to step near them.

We may think this is our campus, but it is theirs too.

This week, I have been contemplating how humans and other species interact. Many of our thoughtless actions severely disturb nature. Those drunken kids yelling outside on the weekend in the middle of the night are waking up nature too.

I have also been wondering what other animals think of us.

They definitely know we are a dangerous species. What specific human features define us to animals? Maybe it is our uprightness, long arms, hairlessness or behavior they notice.

It is no far stretch to say that humans are unaware of many of the disturbances we inflict on life around us. We driv on roads through their habitats and our cars pollute their air; they air blessings and conveniences to us.

We are the only say that matters in most of our decisions. Maybe this is because of the lack of communication among species. If animals could speak up against humans, they would certainly have a bone to pick with us.

We have no problem mistreating our ecosystem because it cannot fight back.

Humans have a sense of entitlement in regards to the world around us. We assume because we are the most developed, we deserve to have our way with the resources and environment around us.

We are the kingpins running this planet to satisfy our weird obsession with imaginary money. It is so easy to disregard the harm we cause onto others, especially if the consequences do not directly affect us.

We are on top of the food chain and we can basically do whatever we want.

We are pretty lucky to have our lives accommodate us to attend this university. We could have just as easily been born being a completely different species.

Our actions also affect intraspecies interactions as well as interspecies.

We unknowingly say and do things to others that can drastically alter their lives.

Satellite campus in Harford County opens JONATHAN MUNSHAW Editor-in-Chief @Jon_Munshaw

After over 100 years of history on Towson’s main campus, the first offcampus classroom building outside of Towson opened this semester in Harford County, now starting a new campus known as Towson University, Northeast.

Although the campus only consists of one building, it is a new option for students who do not want to spend the money commuting to or living on the main campus.

Located on Harford County Community College’s campus, TUNE is now home to 100 full-time students, and another 150 part-time ones, according to Margie Tversky, the director for student services for TUNE. Currently, seven programs are offered at the new building: business administration with a concentration in management, elementary education, early childhood education, family and human services, information technology, psychology and sociology with a concentration

in criminal justiceww. Some of the classrooms in the building were also made to adapt for TUNE to eventually add nursing as a major.

Tversky said the majority of students at TUNE are in the psychology and elementary education programs to receive bachelor’s degrees.

The new campus is part of the 2+2 program, which allows students to attend HCC for two years and then Towson for the next two years to complete their degree.

Junior psychology major Brittany Martin, who is a TUNE student ambassador, said her decision to take classes as TUNE was based upon the cost.

“I wanted to go to Towson University, but with the money and the gas, I wasn’t going to be able to go,” Martin, who lives in Edgewood, Maryland, said.

For students at the TUNE campus, Tversky said there are ample student employment opportunities as well to help with the cost of tuition.

Martin works as a receptionist at the building as well as the book

store, which carries the same things found at the UStore on main campus.

“It’s been trial-and-error, but I’m very content with the new building,” Martin said.

The only downside for Martin has been football games, which are a far drive for her to attend, but all TUNE students have access to athletics tickets using their OneCards.

Tversky said TUNE offers all the same services that can be found on main campus, including access to box office tickets, WEPA printing and child care for students and faculty. Tversky has also been working to bring administrators and staff members from the main campus to TUNE from the Career Center and the Office of Graduate Studies.

The larger classrooms in the building were also built with equipment to have special lecturers and guests be broadcast to TUNE, and vice-versa.

“They have everything I need, I don’t even need to go to main campus,” Martin said. “It’s a beautiful thing.”

An 18-year-old student was arrested last week after he made a threat to campus on the anonymous social media site Yik-Yak. The University sent out a campuswide email on Friday alerting students of the incident.

The message posted on Yik-Yak read “I plan on shooting up this [expletive] school on October 4th,” The Baltimore Sun reports, followed by another message that compared what he would do to the Virginia Tech massacre, where a student shot and killed 32 people and wounded 17 others.

The Sun is also reporting that Cole posted the message online when he found out he wasn’t doing well in his jazz class, and he was afraid his parents would pull him out if his GPA dropped too low.

A resident student first reported the threat to her resident assistant during the afternoon on Oct. 1.

The RA took it to the Department of Housing and Residence Life, according to the Director of University Communications Ray

Feldmann, who then took it to University Police.

TUPD then alerted Baltimore County Police, Maryland State Police and the FBI. Feldmann said the University then reached out to Yik-Yak’s corporate office, who helped eventually identify the student.

The student, Matthew David Cole of Elkridge, Maryland was taken into custody on campus on Oct. 2.

“He was formally arrested and charged, and he was held in our police holding area while the investigation continued,” Feldmann said. “He then went before a court

commissioner for a bail hearing.

Following his initial appearance, he was taken to the Baltimore County detention center.”

According to court documents, Cole was given two charges: threat of massive violence and disturbing operations at a school.

Throughout the 24-hour investigation, Feldmann said the University did not feel there was a direct threat to the University, therefore, no alert was sent out prior to Friday.

He also said that since the YikYak post mentioned a “very specific date in the future,” Chief of Police Bernard Gerst felt that the University had at least 24 hours to find the student. If that 24-hour window was not met, an alert would have been sent out.

“Every step of the way, we didn’t feel like there was any reason to suggest we should [send out an alert],” Feldmann said.

A trial date has been set for Cole of Jan. 27. His access privileges to campus have been revoked, according to Feldmann, pending a review from the Office of Student Conduct.

Cole was released on Friday after posting bail.

home. There are a couple things I would change like the cost of printing, having a gym, and maybe having music playing in the cafe area to make it feel not as dead.”

A grand opening celebration for the building will be held on Oct. 10 at 11 a.m.

Guest economist remains hopeful NILO EXAR Contributing Writer

Elizabeth Bonica/ The Towerlight Richard Wolff lectured at Towson on Oct. 1. Wolff stated that he is hopeful for America’s economic future.

Despite stagnant wages and a middle class that hasn’t entirely recovered from the 2009 recession, economist Richard Wolff remains hopeful for the future of the United States.

Wolff visited Towson last Wednesday to speak about how younger generations can make the American economy one that is more democratized — closer to the people.

Wolff stated that the solution to current economic crisis and frightening trends means doing what earlier generations did not.

“We did not face it as a nation. We did not understand it as a social problem so we thought it was a personal problem,” Wolff said.

The people under duress, those feel-

ing the effects of the Great Recession the worst have to act, even if it seems like an uphill battle.

“We’re at a turning point, and you’re the people who can make the change,” Wolff said. “For those who think there’s no way out, listen to your history.”

Wolff thinks there is something particularly special about the current generation of college students, because today’s college students have been more open to talking about these issues than any generation before.

Wolff expressed some concern over the younger generations attitude toward taking action.

“If you don’t face these problems, you surely will never solve them,” Wolff said.

Career Center begins career month Kristen Zdon Contributing Writer

The Nacho Average Career Center open house was held at the Career Center last Wednesday to promote upcoming events.

Marketing Coordinator Keith Jones said this event kicked off October as career month. The open house featured nachos, refreshments, a prize wheel and an information table where Career Center staff members were available to answer student questions.

“The Nacho Average Career idea actually came from our public speaking interns,” Jones said. “They actually came up with the concept. We worked with the marketing department with the creative material for it so it’s a really fun catchy way to get people’s attention.”

The purpose of the open house was to encourage students to attend more Career Center events, according to Employer Relations and Career Adviser Cary Smedley.

Senior Shira Glushakow-Smith and sophomore Richard Sussan said they were mainly attracted by the nachos, but were interested in attending Career Center sponsored events.

“As we were leaving, we saw a sign that said free nachos and I kind of heard of it briefly through my sorority [Alpha Epsilon Phi],” GlushakowSmith said. “Plus, I’m graduating so I should probably check out the Career Center so it will hopefully help when I graduate.”

Jones said the main event the Career Center wants to promote is the Fall Career and Internship Fair on Oct. 21.

“We will have over 90 employers there,” Jones said. “We have a LinkedIn photo booth where students can get a free professional photo taken to put on their LinkedIn profile.”

After attending an electronic dance music (EDM) concert in May, senior psychology major Lucien Joy’s friends woke up, and they in what he described as “an almost catatonic state” where they were unresponsive and “could not function.”

The day before, they had attended the Electric Daisy Carnival in New York.

“They could not talk, they could not moved, they became physically ill. It was an incredibly intense, very scary experience for me to just see it happening in front of me…[It] completely shocked me,” Joy said.

While at the concert, his friends had taken the drug MDMA, otherwise known as “Molly,” causing these effects to occur during the comedown from the drug. Joy’s friends all survived the experience. Others who have taken the drug were not as lucky.

This past August, two people died after a drug overdose at the Mad Decent Block Party EDM concert at Merriweather Post Pavilion in Howard County. Police said that MDMA was the most widely used drug at the concert.

Twenty other people were taken to the hospital that night.

Despite his experience, Joy said he does not directly discourage people from taking the drug, but instead advocates using it in a safe way if they decide to take it.

“I feel very strongly about not necessarily condemning the use, but just practicing safe use and knowing what

you are doing when you are at music festivals to maximize safety for yourself and others,” he said.

Joy said that his friend’s intense experience could have been due to a number of things. They may have consumed too little food and water, their MDMA may have been laced with other substances, or they may have done too much. Emily Sears, the manager of substance education, treatment and prevention services at the Counseling Center, said MDMA has the same long-term effects on users that any other drug can. But the biggest concern, she said, is when users are not fully informed about the drug they are purchasing.

The drug has varying degrees of strength, and some dealers are also adding other drugs into the pill, such as bath salts and heroin.

“Young people are out there buying this stuff and they have no idea really what they are getting,” Sears said. “If you don’t know that you have a circulatory problem or a heart problem or something like that, taking an amphetamine like that is going to have potentially a pretty dangerous effect on you.”

According to the University’s Core Alcohol and Drug Survey, 3.1 percent of responders said they used a “designer drug” — which includes ecstasy and MDMA — in the 30 days prior to taking the survey.

In the same survey, 15 percent of responders reported using designer drugs at least once in their lifetime, and 9.8 percent said they had done it in the past year.

Concert venues around the country are starting to enact stricter policies surrounding EDM concerts with the

increased popularity of MDMA. Merriweather banned the plastic jewelry kandi following the two deaths at the Mad Decent show. Concert-goers generally wear the jewelry as a colorful accessory that is often in a specific shape or spells out particular words or phrases. However, some drug dealers use them to signify that they are selling MDMA, according to Magnetic Magazine. Merriweather also banned open packs of cigarettes or tampons.

Despite these new measures, Joy said he’s seen security guards at EDM concerts who aren’t as strict as they should be, and fail to check fanny packs or clothing items that can be used to store the drug.

“People are always going to find ways to get drugs into festivals,” he said.

“It is their choice [to bring them in or not] but it is also their choice to do it responsibly and keep themselves and the people around them safe.”

The Congress Theater, a popular concert venue in Chicago, completely banned EDM concerts as part of an agreement with the city to re-open after it had been temporarily closed down due to a liquor license violation in midAugust.

“This drug epidemic is no longer confined to specific demographics, or time of day, or geography, or lifestyle,” Seth Hurwitz, the operator of Merriweather Post Pavilion said in a statement following the concert deaths. “It’s just everywhere, and unfortunately, this generation of teens and 20-somethings has not learned this lesson yet. It’s just heartbreaking.”

Representatives from Merriweather could not be reached for further com-

ment regarding the restrictions put in place following the deaths and injuries.

Sears said she has only worked with a “couple” of students at Towson who have used the drug, but it can still be dangerous to users.

“It’s a stimulant so it’s going to elevate heart rate, it’s going to give you kind of an effect similar to what cocaine might give you,” Sears said. “Typical things that come with amphetamines, so heart rate, blood pressure. I mean that’s why people use it, especially for the concert venues, is because it escalates kind of the excitement and the energy surrounding that environment.”

A sophomore student, whose name is being withheld to protect her identity, said she regularly took MDMA when she would attend EDM concerts with her friends.

“The more I did it, the worse it got,” she said. “It started off really awesome and I was like, ‘This is the most amazing feeling,’ and then it seemed like the more times I did it the worse it was and I couldn’t get back to the feeling I used to have, and we used to also have stuff that was cut with other drugs and that always made it really bad.”

She estimated that she has taken the drug about 20 times since coming to Towson as a freshman who had never used MDMA before, and believes that the usage has changed her. “… I have done every drug that I’ll ever consider doing. So I am not sure if Molly per-se is what has changed me, and if it has a long-term effect, but I think I have problems making myself happy,” she said. “Because you get so much serotonin and then your brain doesn’t know how to produce it

anymore. I think it has made me more depressed in a way.”

The student said the popularization of the drug has “definitely” been a result from EDM culture.

However, Joy said the EDM culture isn’t the only thing at fault.

“Everyone stereotypes and assumes that Molly use stems from EDM music and EDM culture and rave culture, but drug use and alcohol use and inappropriate drug use happens at all sorts of events. It is not exclusively EDM, its just bound to happen at shows,” he said.

Sears said that the incidents at EDM concerts haven’t contributed to increased usage as much as it has heightened awareness of the drug among the attendees. She said this was especially due to the movement of “underground raves” into popular culture.

“It has certainly made it kind of more in the public eye. Historically too, I think that MDMA was more popular on the West coast for a long time and it has kind of gradually become more popular our East,” she said.

No matter the amount of education or experience with the drug any potential user may have, Sears said the risks are simply too high to be taking these kinds of risks.

“This is a dangerous drug market and you are putting out money for things that you don’t know what you are taking and you could wind up in pretty bad shape, if not dead. I mean lets face it there were fatalities over the summer related to this,” Sears said. “You have to be careful and you have to be smart about what you do.”

Sophomore Danielle Garcia, who organized the Taste of the Philippines event on Saturday, said it’s “exactly what it sounds like.”

“We’re giving you a little snippet of what the Philippines is, what the Filipino culture is all about,” Garcia said.

The event began with a slideshow introducing the event and explaining to students the origins of the food they’d be sampling, from the three geographical regions of the Philippines: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Both Garcia and Marvin Cabotaje, a senior who co-organized the event, agreed that food was an aspect of Filipino culture that all students could enjoy.

“When it comes to Filipino culture, it’s definitely [about] the hospitality, offering food, just having a good time,” Cabotaje said.

Sophomore Danielle Whaley said she definitely gained awareness from the event.

“I’m glad that I’m more aware of this culture now, I feel like I’ve learned a lot,” Whaley said.

Other than the food, students enjoyed performances of popular songs, including duets to songs like Taylor Swift’s “Everything Has Changed,” mixed in with songs sung in Tagalog, the official language of the Philippines.

Garcia said she hoped that students would leave the event with a

better sense of Filipino culture.

“We’re always inviting to other people, we’re always open, we’re always welcome to share our culture with others which I think is a great aspect, because I love learning about other

cultures too,” Garcia said. “Hopefully students will leave with a sense of the Philippines, what the culture is, and we just hope that they have a good time, because Filipinos like to have a good time.”

GoodEats gets a gourmet treat This past Columnist Thursday, a few friends and I decided to try a nicer restaurant for one of our friend’s birthday. The choice was easy: Cunningham’s. Cunningham’s is relatively new to the Towson area and adds a more upscale feel to the community.

Located right off of York Road and accessible from the roundabout, the restaurant is easily spotted from the street.

The restaurant is beautiful, with a huge dining room and an open kitchen giving the diner a sneak peak at the magic.

Cunningham’s menu is full of farm favorites, featuring menu items picked at the peak of their flavor, freshness and nutritional content.

The menu is broken down into four different main sections: table, appetizers, entrees and sides. Our waiter suggested the housemade charcuterie ($15), which features fresh cured meats and cheeses served to share. The steak tartare ($12) was unanimously decided by the table.

The dish featured a tartare with chimichuri, quail egg and burgundy truffle, served with a few kettle chips to bring it all together. It was exquisite.

Our table also tried the pork belly and shrimp dumplings (light dumplings with a salsa verde dipping sauce) ($9).

These were by far the best starter. I also highly recommend taking a look at the flatbreads, they are huge and plenty to share. We went with a housemade chorizo ($12), featuring pickled shallots, grilled scallions and mozzarella.

Choosing a main course at a fancier restaurant is always tough.

‘Rover’ travels nowhere Before it even starts, there are two ways you can tell if you are going to like a movie.

The first one is by the trailers that come with it in the theater or in the DVD and the second is by the opening image.

Without knowing a single thing about the movie, I know exactly what I am getting into just by watching the trailers. And just from the opening shot of “The Rover” — the dead landscape of Australia — I knew exactly what this sort of movie would be — a slow, borderline-boring film, just normal enough that it won’t horrify mainstream audiences, but artsy in a way that only film critics enjoy.

The plot is simple, which is one of the only good things I can say about the movie. Eric (Guy Pierce) is travelling through Australia 10 years after a global economic collapse with Rey (Robert Pattinson) looking for Rey’s brother, who has stolen Eric’s car.

Pierce has a permanent frown on his face and speaks in such hushed, low tones that I could not concentrate

Pattinson, meanwhile, continued to prove my theory that none of the three major “Twilight” actors — including Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner — can make a successful or memorable film after the “Twilight” series. The film Pattinson has chosen to prove that he can act in contains little to no plot twists and no interesting characters that make me curious about what happens to them throughout the film. I was given no reason to care about these characters. Forty minutes in, and I still know nothing about Pierce’s character, other than the fact that he is obsessed with his car and is as good of a shot with a gun as any video game protagonist.

The music in the film, done by Antony Partos, is so bland that it actually makes the movie even worse to sit through. I don’t think that has ever happened before.

“The Rover” is absolutely dull.

This movie offers nothing new to the genre of post-apocalyptic movies. The only thing that I learned from this film is that Guy Pierce has an amazing ability to frown.

Marvel goes Noir Stephens Hall gets hot Yes, another graphic novel, but this time we will travel to Marvel Comics territory. “X-Men Laura Antonucci Columnist Noir” by Fred @lauraantonucci1 Van Lente and Dennis Calero, is an interesting take on what the X-Men world could have been, had they all simply been above-average people rather than genetic mutants.

What is great about a mini-series like this one, is that the extensive backstory of the characters that have literally taken decades for authors to create, is mostly unnecessary.

You don’t need to have a mental catalogue of the characters and their powers to understand the story, mostly because none of the X-Men have “powers” in this world.

All the favorite characters are present, including Jean Grey, Wolverine, Rogue, Cyclops and Magneto among others. The roll call is pretty long and it’s great to see all the favorites in a different light rather than their usual selves.

“X-Men Noir” is structured similarly to “Watchmen” in that there are segments of full-color, segmented strips progressing the immediate story, as well as book pages telling a metaphorical story side-by-side. What is even more interesting is how the X-Men are portrayed; everything that was “mutant” about the X-Men is now literal. For example, Cyclops literally has only one eye.

Because all these characters are human, they react to their problems like humans. The X-Men have always had human problems, but also had a more difficult time dealing with them because of their mutant capabilities. In “X-Men Noir,” they still have these problems, but resort to drinking, gambling and vengeance to solve them.

Not everything under the “noir” category is worth reading or watching, and everything relevant to X-Men may not strike your fancy. But, “X-Men Noir” creates a perfect balance between the two worlds. The noir aesthetic, clipped speech, the outdated nicknames, the style of dress and even re-imagined technology sits perfectly side-by-side with the personalities of our favorite characters. Plot twists, unexpected revelations, gun violence, simultaneous murder plots and mayhem makes “X-Men Noir” a great read. Depth, emotional gravity and the human condition are even more present in this version of the X-Men.

Students filed into the auditorium at Stephens Hall last Wednesday to take part in an unusual sex education course whose name is as bold as it’s topic.

Presented by the University Residence Government (URG), the annual I Heart Female Orgasm event was welcomed back to Towson last Wednesday.

“I Heart Female Orgasm is for people to learn about sex-ed in a nice and fun way that’s not the typical sex-ed class,” Derek Douglas, URG director of special projects, said.

The event is designed to educate young adults on a topic they typically are not comfortable discussing: orgasms.

With the use of diagrams and video clips, Marshall Miller and Dorian Slott who also happen to be a couple, discussed the real-life facts and myths of orgasms and sex.

“I think the main goal is to get people talking about an aspect of sexuality that doesn’t get talked about as much as it should,” Slott said.

With the event returning for its fifth year, Slott and Miller said that they were happy to bring their program to Towson again.

The event is not an annual tradition at most colleges. However, URG tries to bring the event back every October and Slott finds that “pretty amazing.”

“The Towson audience is particularly fun and thanks to URG this has become an annual tradition on this campus and we love it,” Miller said.

Both Miller and Slott agree that one of their favorite aspects of the

event is interacting with the different audiences they encounter.

“It’s always fun to be on stage and to be in front of an audience but it’s amazing to get emails afterward or when you come back to a school a year later and have people say ‘This changed my sex life,’ ‘I had my first orgasm,’ ‘I had the best conversation with my partner that I’ve ever had,’” Slott said.

Slott and Miller made sure to keep the event as mature as possible while still appealing to the younger audience.

“It’s the acceptance of different sexualities with a humorous twist to help people feel comfortable hearing about it,” Alex Crenshaw, the president of URG, said.

Despite the focus on female orgasms, the audience was full of students of different genders.

“We both came separately last

year because we were just curious and found it hysterical,” sophomore Alex Ziolkowski, who attended the event with his girlfriend Rebecca Kaplan, said.

Slott and Miller made sure to get the audience involved by asking questions and playing off of their responses.

“The audience was really involved and they [Miller and Slott] related really well to everyone,” freshman and exercise science major Brittany Decker said.

She said that although she was “forced” by her friends to attend the event, she is glad that she ended up going.

“It definitely wasn’t as awkward as I thought it was going to be,” Decker said.

URG said that they hope to keep this event a tradition by continuing to bring it back every October.

Although October is popularly associated with Halloween, or Breast Cancer Awareness month, it is also Disability Awareness Month.

“Events for Disability Awareness Month are part of our ongoing effort to increase understanding about the experiences of students with disabilities and to make a realistic portrayal of students that are living their everyday lives just like every other student,” Director of Disability Support Services at Towson University Susan Willemin

said.

Disability Support Services (DSS) has organized events throughout the month to generate awareness of the stigmas surrounding disability.

Fraternity and Sorority Life, DSS and Campus Recreation are teaming up to put on events featuring adapted sports for students of all abilities to participate in.

Students will be able to play sitting volleyball and blindfolded bocce ball in the Campus Recreation Gym in Burdick Hall. Sitting volleyball will be on Wednesday, Oct. 8 and blindfolded bocce ball will be on Thursday, Oct. 23

from 11:30 to 1:30 p.m.

DSS, the Department of Family Studies and the College of Liberal Arts are also sponsoring events focusing on the diversity of disability in their 8th annual Disability Awareness Workshop. Author of “Far from The Tree: Parents, Children & the Search for Identity” and “The Noonday Demon: An Atlas of Depression” Andrew Solomon is coming to Towson to speak about his books.

Solomon is a writer and lecturer of psychology, politics and the arts.

He also is the winner of the National Book Award and is an activist in LGBT

rights, mental health, disabilities and the arts.

On Wednesday, Oct. 15, Solomon will speak about his New York Times Best Seller book “Far from The Tree” and how “diversity unites us all” in the University Union, Chesapeake III. Following this event, Solomon will lead the workshop titled “The Diversity of Disability: Raising Awareness.”

In this event, Solomon will focus on his two award-winning books followed by a student panel sharing inspiring stories of current or former Towson University students who have disabilities. This event is an interactive activ-

ity, as well as a resource of information for all Towson affiliates. Food, prizes and more will be included.

These events will help celebrate the differences of Towson students of all abilities.

“This is an opportunity to educate others and to help them understand that disability does not make a big difference. We are all still students, faculty and staff that are regular people,” Towson alum Kristen Minch said.

“This month gives me a sense of pride in my accomplishments and that my disabilities do not define or change me in any way.”

Towson struggled against the rain and competition this weekend at the MacDonald Cup hosted by Yale.

The Tigers placed 11th in a field of 14 teams; among them were Harvard, Kennesaw State, Princeton and Dartmouth. The Tigers carded 303 after the first round, and improved by three strokes in the second round to shoot 300, for a total of 603.

Despite the rain cancellations during Saturday’s round, players in the field completed 36 holes on the difficult course at Yale.

Host team Yale claimed first place with an impressive two-day score of 569. Harvard fell one stroke shy to claim second, followed by Kennesaw State with 575.

Eric Mitchell of Princeton earned the individual title in the field after shooting a sub-par 68 in the final round to finish the tournament two under par.

Highlighting the Tigers performance was junior Alex Church, who led the team on Saturday after carding an even-par 70. Church carded a 79 on Sunday, leaving him at 9-over for the tournament and tied for 31st in the field.

Senior Sam Stewart tied for 36th for the Tigers after shooting two five-over-par rounds of 75.

Stewart said the team recognizes what weaknesses they must improve upon.

“We struggled with our putting, that’s for sure,” Stewart said. “That pretty much cost us the whole tournament. We have so many areas that we need to work on. We need to emphasize taking advantage of opportunities with our wedges and making putts when they matter.”

Sophomore Jimmy Grem followed in third place for the Tigers with a two-day score of 79-74-153, for a 13-over-par. Sophomore Juan Veloza, just one stroke behind at 14-over, carded 79-75 for the tournament.

Junior Ryan Siegler carded an 82 in the first round, but improved by six shots in the second round to shoot 76.

“We have two weeks off, so were going to spend all this week focusing on the areas we need to improve on,” Stewart said. “The whole team will need to concentrate on putting and our scoring game. We’ll work on our wedges and making sure we score under pressure. But during the second week we’re going to get back into golfing mode and start qualifying, and hopefully take that good golf to Lehigh.”

The Tigers will conclude their fall season at the Lehigh Invitational.

The Invitational will take place at Saucon Valley on Oct. 18.

We stood anxiously as Delmon Young stepped to the plate with the bases loaded and the Orioles down 6-4. It was the eighth inning and we only had a few more chances to knot the game back up.

Tigers reliever Joaquin Soria threw a hanging pitch and the rest is literally part of Orioles history.

Young smacked the ball down left field line and the crowd roared louder than I’ve ever heard before. I’ve been at M&T Bank Stadium for Ray Lewis’ last game and a postseason game in 2012, and this weekend’s crowd did not compare.

I screamed “Oh my God! Oh my God!” for a few minutes (more like hours) before I could come to terms

with the fact that Young had just given the Orioles the lead. My lack of voice and the numerous cough drops I’ve digested is a testament to how amazed I was by Game 2 of the ALDS on Friday.

IN THIS CORNER I thought to myself, as the almost-50,000 fans waved those orange towels synchronously: “I might never see this again.” Sure, the Orioles are

great right now, as they head to the ALCS to face the Kansas City Royals, but it’s not often a baseball team reaches this point, unless it’s named the New York Yankees or Los Angeles Dodgers.

It has been 17 years since the Orioles have won the AL East and made it to the ALCS and that snapped a 14-year span itself. There simply hasn’t been that much success in Camden Yards since it debuted in 1992.

That’s why, when Zach Britton shut down the Tigers in the ninth inning to clinch the ALDS, I hugged my mom and told her: “Let this sink in!” Yes, I knocked all of her graded papers (she’s a teacher) to the ground, and that is something I regret now for sure.

Of course, I got the “Matt, settle down. You’re going to pop a blood vessel,” phrase.

But I think she eventually understood. I mean, she’s considering going to her second Orioles game in my existence. That’s how important this Orioles run is to my family and this city. It’s much like what the Ravens did in 2013.

The city seemed to pause in honor of the team, as it progressed through the playoffs. I think that’s what will happen this weekend as the Orioles host two games against the Royals.

I’ll be there to see MY team attempt to make its first World Series since 1983 and so will most of Baltimore.

I just hope we all take a step back and enjoy the moment. It could come and not come back for a while. Make sure you have the “I was there when” stories ready for your future children.

Sekerak sets digs mark as Tigers roll, 3-1

Towson came away with a 3-1 conference win against the Northeastern Huskies, as senior defensive specialist Paige Sekerak set the school record for digs.

Sekerak had four assists and 16 kills in the match, and now has a

record of 1,627 digs at Towson.

The Tigers (15-3, 2-2 Colonial Athletic Association) lost 3-1 to the Hofstra Pride (16-2, 4-0 CAA) on Friday and needed a win against the Huskies (8-9, 1-3 CAA) in order to reach .500 in the CAA. Towson and Northeastern were even in the first set, as both teams stayed within two points of each

other. However, a kill from senior outside hitter Saitaua Iosia gave the team a 12-9 lead and sparked a 4-0 run for Towson.

The Tigers held a 17-12 lead, but the Huskies battled back and went on a 7-2 run that tied up the score at 19-19.

A kill from sophomore middle blocker Candace Steadman started a 6-1 run for the Tigers, though, and Iosia’s eighth kill of the set gave the Tigers a 25-20 set win.

The Huskies came back in the second set and took a quick 7-3 lead that the Tigers could not recover from. The Tigers never came within a point of the Huskies after the early run and lost the set 25-19.

It was the worst set Towson had in the match, as the team committed eight attack errors and only had an attack percentage of .167.

Towson returned in the third set with a better output, as the team put together a couple of runs to help win the set.

The Tigers held a 7-6 lead and went on 3-0 run, which included kills from Iosia and junior outside hitter Haley Pa’akaula, that gave the team a 10-6 lead.

Towson then went on a 7-2 run that gave it a 17-8 lead. The run contained three kills from senior opposite Victoria Williams.

The Tigers controlled the rest of the set and won 25-18 off of an attack error from the Huskies.

The fourth set was where the Tigers committed the fewest attack errors and finished off the Huskies.

The set started with another run from Towson, as two kills from Williams and a kill from Pa’akaula gave the team a 6-2 lead.

The Tigers maintained a consistent lead in the set, until the Huskies rallied back and only trailed 18-16.

However, Towson scored the next three points off of two attack errors from Northeastern and a kill from Iosia. The Tigers won the set 25-18 off of a kill from Pa’akaula.

Iosia led the Tigers with 20 kills in the match.

“It was a good rebound game, as we needed to prove to everyone that winning on the road was possible,” she said. “It moves us forward with a more confident attitude we thought we lost from the last two conference games.”

Pa’akaula finished the contest with nine kills and four digs.

“We did a good job finishing the sets that we had a lead in, unlike the Hofstra match,” Pa’akaula said.

“We know what we need to fix for our next matches and we’re excited to play home this weekend.”

Despite an eight-save performance

by Towson senior goalkeeper Erin Quinn, Towson fell to the Hofstra Pride by a score of 1-0 at Mack Sports Complex on Sunday.

Just 4 minutes and 42 seconds into the match, Hofstra forward Sam Scolarici put the Pride on the board with her first goal of the year after sneaking the ball past the left side of Quinn.

Although it was trailing Hofstra early, Towson (3-7-2) continued to attack. Just 1:10 after Scolarici’s goal, freshman defender Kristyn Hubbard had a chance to tie the game after recording what turned out to be her only shot of the match.

However, the shot was blocked and the Towson threat would be turned away.

Following the scoring opportuni-

ty from Hubbard, Hofstra created a chance of its own when defender Caylin Dudley booted a shot that was blocked in front of the Towson net.

After turning the Hofstra chance away, Towson threatened again in the 14th minute. However, senior forward Sofia Read shot the ball wide left of the cage and the Pride would take a 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, sophomore forward Natalia Pinkney recorded a pair of shots for Towson. However, Pinkney and Towson couldn’t find the back of the net as Hofstra hung onto preserve a slim 1-0 victory.

On Friday in Brookline, Massachusetts, Towson was shutout, 4-0, by the Northeastern Huskies.

In the first half of the match, Northeastern took an early 1-0 lead after forward Lahaina Zoller headed a ball from the left wing past Quinn just 5:52 into the game.

While Read tallied two shots for

Towson in the first half, the Huskies took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Northeastern flexed its defensive muscles, as it held Towson without a shot for 45 minutes.

“I didn’t like what I saw at all,” Head Coach Greg Paynter said. “We were unable to break them down and we just didn’t look good.”

Northeastern scored another three goals to come away with the commanding victory.

“I thought we played better against Hofstra, but it was a tough two games and a tough weekend to travel,” Paynter said.

Towson will be back in action Friday at the Tiger Soccer Complex against the UNC-Wilmington Seagulls. The game will start at 3 p.m.

“It will be a battle,” Paynter said.

“We are 0-3 in conference play and we need to come out desperate and secure a win on our home turf.”

Tauber highlights Paul Short Invite Towson finishes in 33rd place out of 38 teams AARON MAZER Contributing Writer @AaronMazer_

Towson was once again led by senior Elisabeth Tauber in the Paul Short Invitational Women’s Gold 6K meet Saturday. Tauber finished the race 101st out of 329 runners with a time of 21:44.

Towson finished in 33rd place overall with 879 points in the race that featured 38 different schools.

“I was really excited going into this race and being able to compete at that level with those teams was a great opportunity,” Tauber said.

Tauber, who ran the 6K school record at the Paul Short Invitational last year, said she was mostly excited, but a little nervous heading into this weekend’s race.

“I’ve been racing on that course at Lehigh since high school, so I was familiar with the course,” Tauber said.

“I usually run well on that course.”

Seniors Ashley Simmons and Kara Bucaro turned in strong performances

for the Tigers as well, with Simmons finishing 106th with a time of 21:46, a new personal best in a 6K race.

Kara Bucaro came through for the Tigers, finishing in 208th place with a time of 22:32, also a personal best for her in a 6K. “I think the team did very well as a whole,” Tauber said. “There were a lot of personal records which is always good.”

Other personal records set in the race included freshman Kara Mueser finishing in 286th place with a time of 23:23, freshman Colleen Cook finishing in 315th place with a time of 24:21, and junior Kelsey Kollar finishing in 316th place with a time of 24:25.

Delaware finished one place behind Towson at 34th overall, followed by Shippensburg, Monmouth, East Carolina and Miami.

“One thing we were really excited about is beating Delaware,” Tauber said. “We beat them by 11 points, and that’s something that everyone on the team played a part of.”

The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, as they travel to State College for the Penn State National Meet. The race will begin at 10:15 a.m.

Editor’s note: This column was written prior to the completion of the Week 5 NFL games.

Listen to the average Sunday NFL broadcast, and count how many times you hear someone say (probably Phil Simms) something to the effect of, “Well, this game is going to be won in the trenches.”

Of course, they’re referring to the offensive and defensive lines. In my opinion, tackle is the most underrated position in football.

The Falcons had so many people injured along the offensive line on Sunday that they started playing Levine Toilolo, a tight end, at right tackle. That didn’t end well for them.

But, how important is the offensive line as a group to a quarterback’s success? And, more importantly, the team’s success?

Let’s start in 2013, where we have a full season of data to look at.

According to Pro Football Focus’s rating system (something I covered last column) the Arizona Cardinals had the worst pass blocking rating in the league, followed by the Giants, Falcons, Bears, Texans, Titans, Colts, Chargers, Raiders and Buccaneers.

The best team out of that bunch was the Colts, who finished 11-5 last season, followed by the Cardinals (10-6),

Chargers (9-7) and Bears (8-8).

Other than that, the rest of the teams were flat-out terrible. The Texans finished with the worst record and the No. 1 overall pick in the draft, and the Giants were terrible for the first 12 weeks of the season. And we all know where the Raiders and Bucs are at right now.

Philip Rivers was the only consistent starting quarterback from a team in that group (so we’re not including Josh McCown) from last season with a top 10 passer rating (105.5).

Eli Manning had the third worst, and Terrelle Pryor had the second worst.

Despite throwing for 4,274 yards and 24 touchdowns, Carson Palmer had an even worse quarterback rating than Alex Smith, Sam Bradford (though Bradford’s was inflated by all the incredibly easy throws given to him

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady has posted 22nd-best passing rating in the NFL as he struggles with a weak offensive line.

This season, the worst 10 pass blocking offensive lines, per PFF are (in order): Patriots, Panthers, Bucs, Eagles, Chargers, Chiefs, Bills, 49ers, Texans and Rams.

Out of that group, only three teams — Philadelphia, San Diego and Houston — have winning records, and the validity of the Texans’ 3-1 start is certainly debatable given their easy schedule.

People are already throwing Tom Brady under the bus, and it’s almost certainly the fault of the offensive line after the Patriots traded Logan Mankins to the Bucs, who are also one of the 10 worst lines.

Besides Rivers, who is having an MVP-like season, the only player inside the top 10 in passer rating out of those 10 teams is Cam Newton.

But, what do these numbers actually mean?

In most cases, the offensive line is not the only reason why a team is losing. It can be one of the many causes, but it’s certainly not the only one. It’s ridiculous to only point to a line as the root of a team’s problems.

Quarterbacks with a great internal clock and the ability to scramble to avoid pressure can overcome weak lines, as Rivers and Ryan have shown the past two seasons.

For teams like the Raiders, Buccaneers and Titans, the line is just a symptom of the real problem, which is just a lack of talented players.

Even if you put Mike Glennon or Pryor behind Dallas’ offensive line (which is, for my money, the best line in the league) they would still turn the ball over and still make bad decisions.

In New England this season, it’s about far more than just the line. It’s about Bill Belichick not being that great of a general manager despite being an amazing coach, and the fact that Brady has no one to throw to.

Oakland’s situation has more to do with the fact that Reggie McKenzie spent too much money over-paying veterans on defense (and Matt Schaub).

There are certain protections to shift into that can also overcome a sub-par line, but it all depends upon how the personnel fit the system (remember how well Geno Gradkowski did in a zone-blocking scheme last year?).

So, it can be true that football games are won in the trenches at times, but that’s not all there is to it.

Having a bad offensive line often stems from making poor player personnel moves, which will reach beyond just bad linemen.

But good skill position players and great quarterbacks will always find a way to make it work, no matter what the clichés say.

At this point last season, Towson was undefeated and held the No. 3 ranking in the Football Championship Subdivision. One year and a slew of starters gone, it’s a different team.

The Tigers sit at 2-4 and 0-2 in the Colonial Athletic Association after a 14-3 loss to the Stony Brook Seawolves on Saturday. The Seawolves (2-4, 1-1 CAA) held the Tigers’ offense to just 77 yards total in the second half.

Head Coach Rob Ambrose said the Stony Brook defense line created problems for his young offense and its ability to function smoothly.

“They are a very good defensive line,” Ambrose said. “There’s at least one, if not two All-Conference players. Boiling it down to having everyone as a sophomore or younger on the offensive line and having to move guys around based on injury. I’d say the combination of those two played a part in the run game and the need to pass game.”

Towson forced three turnovers to its one and won the penalty battle, being called for four fouls to Stony Brook’s eight. However, Towson’s turnover and multiple penalties occurred inside Stony Brook territory.

“This is like a battle of attrition,” Ambrose said. “In the end, it’s who makes the least amount of mistakes, but it’s who makes the least amount of mistakes at critical times. Right now offensively, we are terrible in the red zone. It has nothing to do with the stuff we’re doing, it has to do with us not taking care of the smallest details, and that’s the difference between winning and losing.”

After a Towson forced a Stony Brook punt on its first drive, junior quarterback Connor Frazier started the first drive with a 29-yard pass to senior wide receiver Spencer Wilkins. Towson took the drive to the Stony Brook 17-yard after two long runs from sophomore running back Darius Victor, but Frazier was picked off by Stony Brook defensive back Davonte Anderson.

Anderson returned the interception to the Tigers’ 47-yard line, where the Seawolves began the first scoring drive of the game. Seawolves quarter-

back Conor Bednarski led his team on the 11-play drive that ended with a touchdown by running back Stacey Bedell to put the away team up 7-0.

The Seawovles were 3-for-3 on third down in the drive and 9-for-14 in the game.

“We were in the game the whole time,” senior cornerback Tye Smith said. “It was just when it came down to critical third downs and fourth downs, the defense didn’t pull through.”

Towson punted the drive next away, but pinned Stony Brook at its own seven-yard line. On the second play of the drive, Bednarski’s pass was tipped and intercepted by Smith at the Stony Brook 29-yard line.

Victor kick-started the Tigers’ first scoring drive with a 20-yard run that put his team inside the Seawolves 10-yard line. However, the Tigers settled for a 26-yard field goal from junior kicker Sam Hurwitz after moving the ball to the one-yard line.

Despite the strong drive, Victor finished with 59 yards total, with 12 yards coming in the second half.

“We had a highlight of [Victor],” Stony Brook linebacker Julian Quintin said. “Every play, you would notice the first man wasn’t taking him down. We just turned to each other and said, ‘Man this kid’s good.

We have to swarm the ball.’ Even if he was about to get out, there was three more people in pursuit.”

Stony Brook attempted to respond to the Towson score, compiling a 10-play, 70-yard drive down to the Towson one-yard line. However, the Towson defense stopped Stony Brook three times from inches away, forcing a fumble on the third attempt and recovering it for the turnover.

Starting at their three-yard line, the Tigers went 57 yards on 13 plays into Seawolves territory. However, Frazier was sacked on fourth down to end the half after gaining 53 yards on the over six-minute drive.

Both teams punted away their first two drives of the second half, as the defensive battle continued.

Late in the third quarter, Bednarski was intercepted by sophomore safety Jordan Mynatt at the Stony Brook 39-yard line.

Towson took the ensuing drive to the Seawolves 19-yard line after a holding penalty kept the drive alive on fourth down. The Stony Brook

The Seawolves started the next series at their 49-yard line, but couldn’t cash in on the opportunity.

After two holding penalties brought up a 1st-and-30, the Seawolves were forced to punt after gaining just 16 yards.

The punt forced Towson to start at its four-yard line, where it could not convert on first down. Sophomore punter Jake Ryder got the punt to midfield, where Stony Brook took over with 6:01 left.

Stony Brook took to the ground

on the drive, rushing on 10 straight plays for 49 yards over the course of 4:37. Running back James Kenner capped the drive with a three-yard touchdown to give Stony Brook a 14-3 lead with 1:24 left in the game to clinch the win.

Towson will be on the road for the first time in three weeks Saturday, as they face the James Madison Dukes in Harrisonburg, Virginia.

The Dukes (3-3, 1-2 CAA) are coming off a win over Albany last week, in which they won off of a late field goal. However, they dropped two games to Vilanova and Delaware before the win.

Much of their offense is focused on the run game, which has pro-

duced 243.2 yards per game and nine touchdowns this season.

The Dukes spread the workload, as five players have gained over 100 yards on the ground.

Quarterback Vad Lee leads the way with 538 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He’s also thrown for 1,407 yards and 11 touchdowns.

James Madison will look to avenge a 28-17 loss to Towson last season.
