With Homecoming being later this year than in the past, Towson students had to wait longer than usual to find out who would be playing the annual Homecoming concert. The wait ended on Wednesday, when Towson’s Campus Activities Board announced that rapper Hoodie Allen would play the concert on Oct. 26. Here’s how students reacted to the news on Twitter.

When I spoke to T i m o t h y Chandler, the acting president of the University last week, we discussed his involvement in the changes to

the tailgating policy.

I asked him several questions about the policy, including how many meetings he’s had on it, his thoughts on the original idea to suspend tailgating and if he thinks this is a problem that other colleges are facing.

While you can find the answers to those questions in the news section, there’s one thing that he said that stood out to me.

Chandler told me that there will likely never be a “perfect” tailgating policy. I couldn’t agree with him more.

A day after I met with Chandler, I attended the first part of the studentonly tailgating forum that the Student Government Association held.

I think this kind of a forum was absolutely necessary, but one thing that stood out to me was each student had his or her own way of solving the problem.

As Chandler said, there will likely never be a perfect tailgating policy,

because every student wants something different.

Someone may want more free food at the tailgate, while another student might want the extra space on Lot 14 that a food tent would take up to go toward holding games and activities prior to the football game.

One student may want the tailgate to have an emphasis on the football game, while others only care about the tailgate itself.

No matter what the administration or the SGA does about this policy, not every student is going to be pleased.

A lot of the sentiment at the student forum was that students are too afraid to attend the tailgates, because they run the risk of receiving a citation for one reason or another.

But what is the University supposed to do about that?

When the drinking age in the state was switched to 21 in 1982, universities felt the pressure to enforce the law more than ever.

Should the drinking age be switched back to 18?

Probably. If you are old enough to buy cigarettes and drive a car, you should be able to purchase and consume alcohol.

But that’s not the way things are, and that’s not the way the University can be thinking.

They simply cannot turn a blind eye

to underage students drinking out in the open at a tailgate.

Does that mean that Towson University Police should be checking every single person for an ID at the tailgate?

No. But from talking to SGA President Kevin Kutner and from sitting in on these forums, my understanding is that will never be the case.

I’m not here to comment on anyone’s drinking habits, but I would like to see students buck this trend of abandoning the tailgates altogether.

After all the policy changes, the rules are basically right back where they were before the suspension was even brought up.

Students don’t have to attend any workshops to receive a parking pass for the tailgate, and pickup trucks are allowed after getting banned from one game.

Attending the tailgates doesn’t seem as crucial now that the football team is 0-3 in the conference, but with the Homecoming tailgate looming, students can’t simply not show up.

With the football team slumping, having the stands half-empty won’t help anything.

As Kutner said after the tailgating forum, the best way to restore tailgates at Towson is to show up, be there and support the team, even if there isn’t a perfect policy.

The Big Picture: Be aware of surroundings Brace yourselves: October is halfway over.

All of the pumpkin lovers can pause for some oxygen before reading on.

Time slips by so quickly on campus.

Four short months fly by in a semester when your brain is busy with the tasks at hand. Some day the memories of those four months might just be gone for good.

It seems like we just trudge along through life sometimes. I frequently see pedestrians on campus almost collide because they are too wrapped up in their phones to notice others walking. Everyone is so distracted all of the time. The entirety of their attention is elsewhere. Mine too.

Humans are pretty quick to shift to internal thoughts and plans while carrying on with mundane tasks. It is camouflage for our dislike of the everyday. We love occupying our-

selves with thoughts of interest and ignoring the routine of life.

When you focus and dwell on the immediate obstacles in front of you, it is easy to forget to appreciate the fleeting present moment. Worry and distraction take you into the world of your automatic reflexes and out of the real sensory world.

This week, I went to a mindfulness workshop in the library.

“Mindfulness” is kind of a vague term, but it is an easy concept. Mindfulness is the opposite of mindlessness.

It is about absorbing every detail about the present moment and appreciating the stimuli you might not have noticed in your mindlessness. The sound of the air conditioning or the feeling of your feet pressing against the floor; those are the little things that create mindfulness. It is the same feeling you get when you consciously notice your breathing. These key con-

cepts of mindfulness also lay the groundwork for meditation.

One thing I am very afraid of in life is forgetting my memories. I wouldn’t trade my experiences for anything.

It is unnerving to think that I might have passed over some great memories because I wasn’t paying attention at the time.

Vivid memories are permanently stored whenever you stop and alertly absorb every aspect of your current situation. Take a moment today and notice every facet about your present moment. What do the people walking by sound like? What smells are flowing around today? What does the air feel like against your skin? Does it inspire you? Is it pleasant?

A busy life can compromise these moments, but remember that you are in the driver’s seat.

Letter to the editor: Reaction to article on MDMA usage Lucien Joy

Senior in response to

many of the comments made on the article titled “The Dance Floor Drug.”

I noticed that many people in the comments took offense to the content of this article, and as one of the individuals who was interviewed and quoted for a good portion of this article, I feel the need to address some of the issues people found with the information that was published.

A. Regarding the cover photo of the individuals who are participating in hooping. I understand your reasons for taking offense, however at no point in the article was hooping even mentioned, let alone was it associated with MDMA. I understand that hooping is an activity and art form which many people take seriously, but this is merely a photo. If you chose to draw conclusions and make inferences that were never stated, that is your own prerogative, but do not put words in the mouths of the author, as it was never the intent to make others believe that if you hoop, you do drugs of some sort.

B. Regarding kandi bracelets: As an individual who has participated in an exchange of these bracelets, I agree more than anybody that the exchange of these bracelets is a very beautiful, symbolic tradition of meeting new people and creating new bonds.

However, it is without a doubt becoming more of a growing concern.

I am not in any way stating that all concert-goers participate in this, but I have personally seen many people wearing and trading kandi that have phrases such as ‘Molly,’ ‘roll hard,’ ‘trip,’ ‘roll with me,’ and other such words that can be construed as condoning drug use.

The retail store Spencer’s has even begun selling kandi bracelets that clearly depict the drug ‘Molly’ in bright letters. That is what the article was addressing, not all kandi in general.

C. People seem to think that by stating that I advocate for safe drug use, that means I condone the use of drugs altogether.

That is not in any way what I said in my interview, and I stand by my beliefs. In no way do I condone the use of drugs.

I would thank you kindly to not put words in my mouth.

Student tailgates still need solutions JONATHAN MUNSHAW Editor-in-Chief @jon_munshaw

In the continuing conversation regarding the tailgating policies, especially relevant because of the upcoming Homecoming game on Nov. 1, the Student Government Association held a student-only tailgating forum on Thursday.

Members of the SGA executive board ran the forum, and students expressed their opinions on what can be improved about the current tailgating policies.

For the long-term, SGA Director of Athletic Affairs Kyle Bamberger said at the meeting that he would like to expand the number of lots available for students to tailgate in, including the lots near the Administration Building.

Bamberger said that in the past, tailgates had been too similar to parties and weren’t enough about the football team. He said expanding the number of lots would open up the space available to attendees with cars to hold their own activities near their cars, including lawn games and grilling, things that are found at traditional football tailgates.

“I’d like to see multiple lots. I’d like to see giveaways at different areas,” SGA President Kevin Kutner said after the forum. “I’d like to see students just enjoying the tailgate in a way that makes sense. The outdoor rave that’s been occurring at recent tailgates, that’s not a tailgat-

ing that’s just an outdoor party. For some people who want that, that’s terrific but I’d like to see grills.”

For the short term, however, several students said that they don’t want to attend the tailgates after the original proposal to indefinitely suspend the student tailgating until the administration made policy changes. However, the President’s Council chose to change the enforcement of the policy rather than suspend the tailgates.

Additional police and security officers were added to monitor the tailgate, pickup trucks were banned from the lot and any student that wish to park a car at the tailgate had to attend a 20-minute seminar on the tailgating policies in order to receive a parking permit.

The truck ban was lifted after just one week, and students instead only had to sign saying they understood the tailgating policies when receiving their football ticket and parking pass at the box office.

Now, the tailgating policy is basically what it was prior to the suspension suggestion, but there is increased enforcement of the policies. At the forum, several students said their peers were afraid of any potential punishments that could come by attending the tailgate.

However, Kutner said the best way to drum up excitement for tailgates again after two games with lackluster attendance is for students to attend them, and encourage others to do so as well.

“The No. 1 way to get tailgates back is to go,” he said. “People talked about [that] they’re afraid that they are under a microscope.

They think that if they go to the tailgate lot, if they’re underage and have a drink in their hand, there will immediately be bright lights flashed on them, they’re asked for their ID and then they’re cuffed away. I think that that doesn’t happen, that’s not going to happen even with these changes and so the [best] way for students to get their tailgates back is to attend them.”

For the short term, other sugges-

tions at the forum included getting more student groups involved to hold different activities at the tailgate, enforcing alcohol consumption by requiring wristbands for those over 21 and greater involvement from the athletic department, including increasing giveaways at games.

Acting University President Timothy Chandler said that it will take several adjustments to get a policy that maximizes attendance.

“As I've said to my vice presidents, we may not always get things right, in terms of how we think about student safety and well-being,

but the one thing we cannot afford to do is get it wrong. That's my view of this. Yes, it isn't perfect, but I doubt there'll ever be a perfect policy,” he said.

Chandler said the original proposal to suspend tailgating was “further than we needed to go” because colleges all over the country are facing the same problems.

“When you've got 22,000 students, there’s a number of questions to ask…

Do we have enough space? Are there enough places for people to be? It's an issue in many places, not everywhere, but many places,” he said.

Cook Library debuts collaborative student workspaces SAM SHELTON Associate News Editor @sam_tweets_now

Students have begun using Cook Library’s new collaborative group study spaces, following the area’s unveiling in mid-September.

Located at the back of Cook’s second floor, the area now features wider cubicle space, rooms for group projects as well as updated lighting fixtures. The space was also painted and refurbished.

Each of the new collaborative work sections include computers and whiteboard walls that students can use to sketch out information in a way that is visible and comprehensible to everyone in the group. These whiteboards are wiped down and cleaned every night in preparation for further student use the next day.

“That’s what I enjoy, taking a step

back,” student Robert Greer said. “You can see everything and think a little bit differently as opposed to just looking at it on paper.”

“It’s so fabulous because I’ve seen people do mathematical formulas, chemical things, outlining texts, just all kinds of things. To put things on a board so everybody can see it and talk about it and discuss and problem solve, it gives you another perspective,” Dean of University Libraries Deborah Nolan said. “So, I think it’s very effective.”

Prior to the renovation, Nolan said that the area seemed unwelcoming to students.

“This renovation is something that we have wanted for at least eight years and I am so happy that we got it done this summer. It’s created space that the students have been wanting for group

study,” Nolan said. “It takes a space that was old, dark, crowded and opens it up.”

The second floor has also added flexible furnishings like whiteboards and chairs mounted on

wheels that students can fold up and move around to create learning and studying environments that are more comfortable to them and better suit their needs.

“It’s really helpful,” junior Zach Stuehler said. “The only thing I could say that could be a little more helpful would be more big tables, because a lot of the time I come here with my friends or people for group projects.”

Nolan said that library staff are planning to add different furnishings and technologies as the funding becomes available. Nolan specifically mentioned the possibility of adding facilities that students will be able to use to practice presentations.

“We’re trying to meet the needs

of students and the way they learn and the way they work. We also are trying to balance the group work with individual, quiet work,” Nolan said. “One of the things students also want is spaces for quiet, kind of in between the group work and the absolute quiet room.”

Nolan also praised the University faculty and staff that worked with library officials throughout the process of laying out the space.

“The people who work in University facilities and construction and design who did the work for us on the second floor are fabulous,” Nolan said. “They’ve been so great, they worked so hard this summer getting it all ready so that we would have it ready to open in September.”

Nobel Peace Prize makes history This past Friday, Malala Yousafzai of Pakistan became the youngest recipient of a Nobel Prize in history at the age of 17. She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.

Yousafzai was shot multiple times in 2012 when she was only 15 while on the bus to school. Since then, she has became the face of not only woman’s right to education worldwide, but for humans rights around the globe.

Kailash Satyarthi of India also won a Nobel prize for his courageous activism for the right to education for all Indian children.

The two winners have pledged to work together on their campaigns and invited each of their state’s figureheads to the prize ceremony for a sort of “reconciliation” from feuds between India and Pakistan’s actions in Ukraine.

Turkey Prime minister denies U.S. claim The Turkish prime minister has denied a United States claim that U.S. officials say would have authorized Turkish air bases to be used as stations for attacking jets in the effort to combat ISIL in Syria.

This comes as a conflicting viewpoint from Turkish lawmakers, who recently passed legislation to allow foreign air forces to use their air bases.

However, Turkey has agreed to train Syrian rebels in some capacity for the fight against ISIL. This comes at a time when the world looks to Turkey for its cooperation, as ISIL fighters have taken the Syrian town of Kobani, seen as extreme strategic advantage.

The town is near the Turkish border. While the United States and its allies have been conducting strikes of the town of Kobani, Turkish tanks have been left idle just across the border in Turkey, to much criticism from leaders around the world.

Dallas, Texas Area nurse infected with Ebola A nurse who had been treating the Liberian man in Dallas who had Ebola has caught the virus herself.

The nurse was quarantined after exhibiting a low-grade fever. Eyebrows have been raised in this particular case because of the stringent protocol that health workers must perform in order to even take care of a patient with Ebola, which includes full protective gear.

This prompted President Obama and the president of Health and Human Services, Sylvia Burwell, to promise that an extensive report of possible explanations for the protocol breach would be swiftly carried out.

College students can make a career out of changing the world if they pay attention to both their passions and talents, and to a need that exists in the world, according to social entrepreneur Sam Davidson.

“Where you find those three things intersect, that’s where you find a chance to make a difference as a living,” Davidson said.

Davidson is the president of Cool People Care, an organization that helps people who want to make a difference get started in that process. He’s also the author of several books and a frequent guest speaker at colleges across the country.

“It’s always fun to do, students are interested,” Davidson said.

When he gives this particular speech, Davidson provides students with a framework that they can use should they want to become a social entrepreneur.

A social entrepreneur, according to Davidson, is “someone who meets a need of the world as a core part of their business.” It’s a “hybrid” between nonprofits and for-profit corporations.

The framework that Davidson uses gets students to think about their passions and their talents, and how they can be utilized to fill a need.

He also encourages people to stop thinking about “what they do for a living,” and more about what they do “for a life.”

“It’s really, ‘What is your life about?’”

Davidson said. “It opens up the conversations. You may be a banker or a restaurateur, but you might really be about social justice, or equality, or education.”

Davidson spoke in the Chesapeake rooms to a crowd of about 60 students and members of the Towson University community.

Throughout his talk, he was able to connect with students by sharing his own story about how he got to where he is now after his time in college.

“I never thought that right out of college I was going to be an entrepreneur,” Davidson said. “I didn’t take a business class in college, I was a history major.

But with Cool People Care, I sort of saw

the opportunity and really wanted to jump on it.”

Davidson also got members of the audience to connect with each other.

As he started explaining his three-part framework, he encouraged members of the audience to share their ideas with each other.

“I think it was very different, I wasn’t expecting it,” senior Hrisoula Mavrophilipos said. “But it was cool.”

Students were able to go to Cook Library to write thank-you letters for their tutors last Tuesday, as a part of International Tutor Appreciation Week.

Allison Hutchison, a learning specialist for the Academic Achievement Center, said that students do not always realize the level of support that tutors give and the amount of hard work they do. “[Tutors] are the glue that holds things together,” Hutchison said.

“Meeting with a tutor can make you feel a light at the end of the tunnel.”

Tutors were able to go to the

open house to receive their letters, decorate a cupcake and pin a “Super Tutor” button on their shirts. The tutors appeared very appreciative of the time faculty took to show that they are aware of the hard work that tutors do.

“It shows that our employers really value us and forms good relationships with the people we are working with,” Kelly Bryan, an art history tutor, said.

The tutors also expressed appreciation for the recognition they received from students.

“I’m glad people appreciate tutors, because a lot of people need and use them. It’s good to know our efforts are not in vain,” Travis Betzold, a philosophy tutor, said.

Elizabeth Scarbrough, director of the AAC, mentioned that tutors at Towson are even more important and valued because of the small number of them. Each tutor covers multiple subjects, meaning that they can take more students.

However, Scarbrough said that one criticism that the AAC has received is that not all subjects are being covered.

“We would like to have more tutors,” Scarbrough said. “But we need more space.”

Scarbrough said that the biggest problem the AAC has is the limited space where tutors can teach. They are currently only in Cook Library and a couple overflow rooms, so space is very limited.

Trip to Myanmar inspires lecture KRISTEN ZDON Staff Writer

Donald Kopka, an assistant professor from the Department of Management, recently returned from a sabbatical to Myanmar.

“The reason why I was interested was because I know [Myanmar is] undergoing a lot of political and economic change and I thought that my presence there could be a value in terms of helping to improve education in students’ situation,” Kopka said.

Kopka delivered a presentation Friday about his experiences in Myanmar, and how the area is recovering from oppression.

Through the Fulbright Scholar Program, Kopka taught a variety of business classes to students in Myanmar from December 2014 until April 2014.

“It involves developing a project statement of what you want to do,” Kopka said. He said that the process for applying was very well-developed.

Kopka said that he enjoyed his interactions with students, though things twere not always as smooth with the nfaculty. t “The interaction with the students was very appealing. They were very smart, very hospitable, very enthusiastic,” Kopka said.

Kopka said that connecting with the faculty was a bit more difficult because he had such a positive experience while he was in Vietnam. Kopka has visited Vietnam at least 20 times since he traveled there in 2004.

“One of the reasons I selected Myanmar was because it was a natural follow on to Vietnam. Vietnam was also evolving to a market economy, entrepreneurship and development,” Kopka said.

Students who attended the lecture said that they found the experience to

be a positive one.

“The lecture was very interesting because he was able to combine his own experience from the Peace Corps and being a professor to make points about the political problems throughout the country,” freshman Mary Crowe said.

Q&A with artist and speaker Chuck D After over 30 years of touring across the world, three platinum albums and an introduction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, Public Enemy front man Chuck D has been bringing his politically charged hip-hop message to college campuses across the country.

His most recent stop was at Towson on Oct. 8, when he spoke as part of the Center for Student Diversity’s Diversity Speaker Series. Chuck D talked to students about sorting through the mass amount of information they’ve been provided in the media and how, as college students, it’s their duty to become more informed and make change in the culture.

After his speech, The Towerlight spoke to the hip-hop legend about his message to students.

In your speech, you mentioned that you’ve spoken to over 600 different colleges.

How do you try to mix it up each time, and how has your messaged changed over the years?

You’ve got to know where you’re speaking out. What the population is like of the student body. You should definitely know the time, because there’s always topics of the time. Like today, I was talking about all of the things that have been coming up this month like ISIS, Ebola and Ferguson, and like I said, people don’t have a good grasp on those things right now.

those kinds of political messages still exist in hip-hop today?

There’s many, but they aren’t being projected. Because of the artists that are all over the place, they may not be able to find the avenues. They can be heard, but the access that people have is the access to everything else. But it could still be heard by everyone in the community, but they are probably listening to everything else at the same time.

Why do you think some of those politically driven songs and artists then might not be finding as much commercial success on the radio or on television as current rappers who are more likely to write about partying?

Those things are paid for. We’re in an unapologetic society that brings the worst out of us instead of the best. This is a trend that has been set before us. So to talk about the good things that people are doing could be looked upon as mundane, but that’s backwards. If you’re just going to talk the worst about somebody just to get their attention, that’s horrible. Shouldn’t it be something if you write a good piece and someone says they like it, but if someone comes along and says you’re wasting your time, you’re like ‘what?’ But what I wanted to tell people was they’ve inherited this obtuse behavior from older people, but we need to reject that. We should make spaces where people can feel good and be complemented. That’s why I wanted to come in and say and salute collegiates for sticking out. I don’t like to talk about me, I want it to be about the audience.

Why do you think people aren’t as educated as they should be on these subjects?

There’s just too much information flying around at once. People, for their own safety, they shouldn’t be honed into this whole mass hysteria anyway. They need to look at it from a distance, but sometimes you are forced into seeing certain things. But this is a weird time right now because there’s so much going on it’s easy to get distracted.

If somebody isn’t as educated on these issues as they should be, what would you say are some of the best ways to know more about these topics and not be swept up in all the news?

I’m a culturist. I like to tell people to try to get some education on the terms that they dig, and the music that they love, and start that way. If you’re a collegiate, you already know what you’re going to specialize in. But I like to come in and, for example, tell people about hip-hop. It’s not just goof-off time with your friends, you need to learn the background and the history, it’s serious, but it’s also a lot of fun. I like to explain those kinds of things to students.

During your speech, you brought up the history of hip-hop, and what a lot of your songs meant during that time, especially the more politically driven ones such as “By the Time I get to Arizona” and “Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos.” Do you think

When 2005 Towson graduate Joe Granato was seven years old, he designed a video game.

While living in New York, he and his friend drew characters and levels for a game they called “Mystic Searches.”

At the time, the only video game system out was the Nintendo Entertainment System, but Granato sent a letter to Nintendo asking them for “all the stuff to make our game.”

“We were sure there’d be spaceage computers delivered any day and we’d know how to use them,”

Granato said.

Although Granato’s game idea was denied at the time, almost 28 years later, he’s bringing his game to life.

By using a Kickstarter project, he’s raised over $43,000, well past his goal, to make “Mystic Searches” for the NES, along with a documentary about the creation process so that others can create their own 8-bit games.

Granato was inspired to start up the project again after he found the original drawings in his parents’ shed.

“I had this hilarious moments when I turned back in to a six-yearold kid. And I was thinking and was like, ‘Goddammit I’m a programmer,

I could actually make this game now,’” he said.

After studying electronic, media and film at Towson, Granato became a computer programmer and worked on video games for the iPhone and the P.C. Rather than create the game on his own, Granato went out and assembled a creative team to update the same ideas he had when he was a kid, including a comic book illustrator to bring his characters to life, a fantasy writer to expand on the story and a film composer to make a soundtrack for the game.

Granato will document the creative process while his team solicits advice from others who have worked

on NES games in the past. According to the Kickstarter page, the game is set to be launched on Oct. 17 of next year, the 30th anniversary of the launch of the NES and a year after the Kickstarter is set to expire.

“It is a dramatic evolution of the game idea that I had,” he said. “It’s kind of like we’re taking the seeds of those ideas and embellishing them.”

When the game is released it will work on all NES consoles, but will also come with a version for the PC. Players will be able to unlock certain features on the NES that will then become playable on the PC version. “[The PC version] won’t be a triple-A title, but it won’t have the same limitations of the NES,”

Granato said.

Granato described “Mystic Searches” as a traditional NES adventure game similar to the original “Legend of Zelda” game, but the storyline and gameplay are all still in development, so little concrete details are currently available.

For many modern gamers who are used to the crisp graphics on the PlayStation 4, an 8-bit game will certainly be out of the ordinary, but Granato said it’s surprising how much of an audience there is to be nostalgic about the NES. “If you’re not part of that scene, you wouldn’t know it,” he said. “But used game stores would tell you that NES games sell the most.”

Latin soul in Towson’s heart Bender’s hot read RACHEL WALTEMEYER Contributing Writer

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to an end, Towson’s LatinAmerican Student Organization (LASO) challenged students to recognize and celebrate what makes them different.

“You can find something in someone else that you would have never expected through your culture or through learning about another culture and you can appreciate so much more,” senior and physical education major Ashley Rivera, who attended the event, said.

Last Friday, Potomac Lounge’s dance floor was packed until midnight as students celebrated Noche Latina.

This annual event honors Latin and Hispanic culture with traditional foods, dance performances, music and of course dancing.

Pasión, Towson’s Latin dance group performed a choreographed performance in the bachata style of dance to “Los Infieles” by Aventura.

After, couples were invited to the dance floor for a salsa, cumbia, bachata and merengue competition where seniors Dennis Orellana and Nia Nyamweya were awarded first place.

A biochemistry major, Orellana identifies as a Latino American and said an event like Noche Latina brings unity to Towson.

“Latino is a mixture of Europeans, Africans, Native Americans. It’s like a bunch of people, pretty much like a salsa,” Orellana said. “They got all these different ingredients into one

and the flavor tastes great.”

Denis’ dance partner, women and gender studies major Nyamweya has been an active member of LASO for four years.

“I’m not Latina myself but I love learning about other cultures and having other people learn about mine,” she said. “[Noche Latina] is a really good way to learn about people and broaden your horizons.”

The only time the dance floor emptied was when students were filling their plates with traditional dishes like arroz con frijoles, Peruvian chicken, carne asada, fajitas, platanos and yucca.

Cultural drinks such as horchata were also provided.

“I transitioned from New Jersey to Mexico, I grew up most of my time in Mexico my childhood and everything and now I just came back for the education and a better life,” freshman Brian Acevedo said. “Just hearing the music makes me feel like I have my family here so that’s pretty cool.”

Senior and LASO’s president Gary Gutierrez said that this was the first year Noche Latina was a ticketed event, and he was surprised that it sold out.

“Everyone had fun, I really just wanted everyone to get on that dance floor, that was my goal,” Gutierrez said. “Everybody eat, do your stuff and get on the dance floor.”

She manages to craft an entire story in the fewest number of Laura Antonucci pages. Bender Columnist @lauraantonucci1 has an uncanny knack for creating a world out of implications and emotional display rather than outlining a plot. “The Girl in the Flammable Skirt” is one of Bender’s early novels, and in it, she establishes her creative style immediately.

“The Girl in the Flammable Skirt” is a series of short stories grouped into three sections. Without giving any spoilers, Bender creates surreal human interactions, explores them, ends them and by the time her stories are finished, you know that an entire world began and ended within her pages.

When I say surreal, I am not kidding.

Bender’s trademark is that she creates people with afflictions or circumstances that could never possibly exist in this world. “The Girl in the Flammable Skirt” is one of her early books, so the surrealism she employs in her later books is not as prevalent. However, it is still present within the context of individual stories. While not every story breaks the laws of biology or physics, it is interesting to see how Bender manages to sequence her stories so that, even though the real and surreal are side by side, nothing ever feels out of place.

The juxtaposition of real and surreal is muted, in my opinion, because of Bender’s material. A master of the “showing, not telling” technique, Bender shows what it means to be human, through events or emotions that push people beyond their limits.

In no way is this a self-help book, but it is comforting to read how someone has let their weird interpretation of the world develop into something that is not only tangible — an actual book — but beautiful in its own weird way. I am aware that this makes absolutely no sense, but you have to read the book. The copy I own is a whopping 182 pages, and if I can burn (see what I did there?) through it while waiting on a load of laundry, you can too.

Columnist discovers ‘the greatest burger ever’ I am always looking for a great burger.

That is why this week I have chosen Hamilton Tavern as the newest GoodEats recommendation.

Tucked away off of Harford Road, you’ll miss this neighborhood joint if you blink. The interior is painted brown with a rustic feel and a big ornate door capture the storefront — once inside you just feel warm and cozy. All I needed was a blanket and a reclining chair.

The restaurant is comprised of just a couple tables and a short bar as you walk in. Don’t look for a hostess stand here. The restaurant has no need for one, with a friendly bartender waiting to find you a table.

Now, I know I hyped these burgers up, but before I get ahead of myself, let me tell you all about the appetizers.

The appetizers, or “munchies,” are all centered on finger-food and easily shareable items. My family and I started with the daily special house-made chips and dip. That night they were featuring a warm broccoli and cheese beer sauce.

Alongside the chips and dip, we also got the disco fries ($6), which are handcut fries with a cheesy duck gravy, cheese blend and scallions. They were a truly guilty indulgence for all

of us to enjoy.

Here we go, time to get all of your salivary glands going with this flavorful burger. The Crosstown Burger ($14) starts off with Roseda Farms fresh beef. They top the patty with lettuce, onion and horseradish cheddar.

And, if you’re really feeling adventurous, throw a fried egg or bacon on it. The burger lived up to the hype; it was juicy and absolutely amazing.

Not to overshadow the rest of the menu items, but the burger was worth the drive. The pulled pork BBQ biscuit ($13) featuring a homemade cheddar-jalapeno

drop biscuit was also scarfed down at my table.

Our server also recommended the falafel pita sandwich ($11) and the chicken sandwich special (a unique sandwich made up daily). No matter the entrée you chose, they are mostly all served with your choice of fries or chips.

For a dollar more, you can get broccoli salad, potato salad, a house salad or Boh Battered O’s. Get the onion rings. I repeat, get the rings, they were the real deal.

“So we have just noticed that he has been growing in popularity and we feel like he is a good fit for campus.”

The concert will take place on Sunday, Oct. 26 in Paws. While Homecoming has traditionally been

held in the Towson Center or — more recently — SECU Arena, Walsh said the concerts haven’t sold out in approximately five years.

“It just has not been the kind of experience we want to give our students,” she said. “They buy a ticket to a show and it’s not full, it’s just this very weird vibe, all of the seats aren’t full, there isn’t this huge group of people pumped to be there.”

Walsh said she hopes that the move to Paws will create a more intimate setting for students.

“We wanted students to really connect with the artist. It’s ‘An Evening with Hoodie Allen.’ There is no opener, no filler, nothing. It is just you and the artist in a little venue and you get to connect with them and see them no matter where you are standing in Paws, you can see and hear every single thing he says,” Walsh said.

Though there will be a limited amount of space, Walsh said CAB is attempting to ensure that tickets will go to Towson students first.

“It’s one student-price ticket per ID and in order to get a non-student ticket you need to go with a student to get one. So let’s say a student wants to bring their sister and their mom, so they buy their own ticket for $14 and they buy two non-student tickets for $20 each and that’s it,” Walsh said.

The concert will act as the kick off-event, not only for the Homecoming game on Saturday, Nov. 1, but for “Halloweek” as well. Usually, Homecoming and Halloweek are two separate weeks of programming, but this year CAB had to find a way to integrate the two.

“It kind of created this unique challenge for us,” Walsh said. “How we are going to make Homecoming, not

necessarily just for us but for people in the Student Activities Office as well as the homecoming committee, how are we going to make these two identities merge, and how are we going to make it fun.”

Activities during the week will include, among others, Booingo, a Halloween themed bus trip on Oct. 25 and the annual Survive Towson on Oct. 31.

“You have the concert on one end to kind of kick-off, kind of set the fun of it being a really good time, getting students hyped up, and then Saturday is going to be the football game,” Walsh said. “So we felt like having it on this Sunday was a really good way to help tie it into the week because in the past we have done it the Sunday after, we have kind of not fit in with the week and the identity of it as well, or as much as we are this year.”

When Towson senior Dave Charles returned to his home in Ocean City, Maryland this past summer, he was reminded of how he first got his start as a musician performing with just a few friends on the boardwalk.

He was also reminded of how different it was from performing on a stage, or singing into a microphone directly in front of the executive producers for NBC’s “The Voice.” “’The Voice’ was my first time ever doing anything like that and I wasn’t even going to do it, I was pressured into doing it,” Charles said. “My friends mostly were like, ‘Hey you should go for ‘The Voice’’ for like two years and then I watched season five and I was like, ‘You know, why the hell not’ so I went and they just picked me up.”

Charles auditioned in January for the seventh season of “The Voice,” which premiered this past September, and was named among the top 100 vocalists in the country for that season.

“Me and my parents were trying to guess how many people go out [to Hollywood], because on ‘American Idol’ like 500 people go to Hollywood. And when I got there they were like, ‘Yeah this is the top 100 in the country,’” Charles said. “It was totally crazy being a part of that.”

After first playing as a drummer in his band, Charles decided to move to the front of the stage and begin his solo career as a guitarist and vocalist.

“I like to entertain people, I was a drummer for a really long time and always at the back,” Charles said. “So I started just writing everything pretty much and then went solo for a while after my band, so I could find out what I was trying to be about.”

Charles said that it took him awhile

to discover what genre he would classify his music as and describes his upcoming EP “Where the Waves Are” as a mixture of folk and soul. He also said that the style of the EP is different from the music he currently has uploaded on his SoundCloud profile.

“A lot of my songs on there are really old songs so I am stoked to get this out,” Charles said. “Every time I write a song I think that the one I wrote before that sucks so I have to continually put stuff out.”

“Where the Waves Are” will be released in December as Charles’ first official EP. “The EP that I am putting out at the end of the year is my most prized like, took my time on it, type EP,” Charles said.

In May 2014 Charles was signed by the independent label Mint 400 Records, located in North Jersey.

“I met a lot of connections through that [The Voice] and some of them knew people in my genre in New Jersey, Philly and New York and stuff so I started pushing my stuff more towards them and playing a lot more shows when I got back and I guess one of them liked what they heard and picked me up and wanted to work with me,” Charles said.

He explained that the audition process for the show is extensive and involves multiple levels of auditions.

In the first round he said he waited in line with approximately 22,000 people who were all hoping to make it onto television.

“Then you go to a private studio, and mine was in Philly and it was where Boyz II Men and Temptations record, and you go in there and that is like your callback,” Charles said.

In March, Charles was flown out to Hollywood, California for the executive audition.

“The top 120 get flown out and then

90 make it to the show. I made it to the top 100 and then to be honest I messed up my words,” Charles said.

During the audition he mistakenly sang the first and second verse of Lenny Cravitz’s “American Woman” in opposite order, which was an automatic disqualification.

“You go in and you wait in this little tiny hallway, and it’s crazy there are Grammy records on the wall and stuff, its very nerve racking,” Charles said. “I was so taken aback by where I was and everything that was going on.”

Charles said that by that point in the audition process all he needed to do was sing the song correctly and he would have made it onto the televised “blind audition” portion of the show.

Although he said that is difficult to see the friends he made while in Hollywood on the show, he learned a lot about himself.

“It’s definitely very humbling to be around those kind of people. I had never really truly been in a gathering with like so many ridiculously talented people,” Charles said. “I learned a lot about what other people put into their music.”

Charles said that he plans move to Los Angeles soon to work with some individuals he met while auditioning for “The Voice” and then go on tour in March.

“I am driving across [the country] and going to each state that is well with music and hitting them up and we are going to write and play some shows together and get me out there,” Charles said. “A lot of traveling, I love to travel and meet new people.”

Sci-fi with an “edge” In “Edge of Tomorrow,” Major William Cage (Tom Cruise) is a public relations officer who has never been in combat. When he is ordered by his commanding officer, General Brigham (Brendan Gleeson), to join combat in a military operation, he refuses. Cage is then stripped of his rank, labeled a deserter and is sent to join a unit. Within minutes of combat Cage is killed, but instead wakes up on the previous day, continually reliving the same day over and over again. He seeks the help of legendary soldier Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), who once had the same thing happen to her. The pair plans to defeat the Mimics, an alien race that has taken over the country, once and for all with the help of Cage’s new ability.

Everything about “Edge of Tomorrow” has already been said: it is the action version of “Groundhog Day,” and it has a video game vibe to it with Cage constantly “resetting” the day. Anytime something goes even slightly wrong, Cage allows himself to be killed so he can start all over again. However, most impor-

tantly, it is surprisingly good.

The film has unexpected dark humor that ironically brightens the tone of the film, and has an excellent balance between action and drama. Cruise is far more entertaining here than he was in last sci-fi film, “Oblivion,” as he successfully plays both a coward and the hero that Cage ultimately becomes. Blunt is also great as the tough-as-nails veteran soldier, Vrataski, who gives her one hundred percent best in everything that she does.

The film constantly kept throwing new things out to keep its audience interested, like Cage’s affection for Vrataski as he works with her in his various loops of time.

A low, emotional moment where he gives up on his comrades and decides to fight on his own, and even the montage where Cage and Vrataski go over very precise moments on the battle field is interesting because of how the scenes are shot and edited together.

Just 50 seconds into the game, James Madison quarterback Vad Lee completed a 48-yard pass for a touchdown to take a 6-0 lead over the Tigers. Lee and the Dukes never looked back after that score, rolling to a 62-7 win over Towson at home.

For the Tigers (2-5, 0-3 Colonial Athletic Association), there was turmoil from the start of the game after allowing the early touchdown.

Senior quarterback Connor Frazier was replaced by his backup, senior Joe Brennan, which began a series of flipflopping throughout the game. They threw for a combined 159 yards and completed 21 of 23 passes.

Head Coach Rob Ambrose said the decision to play Brennan in the game was based on the ineffectiveness of the Tigers offense, in particular in the passing game.

“The plan was to be able to throw the

ball more effectively, and to be honest, we did that,” he said. “To add to that, Connor is a very good wide receiver. He had some catches and some critical first downs. Considering where we are with our receiving corps, [we wanted] to get another arm on the field and add to the receiving corps depth and ability.”

However, neither could protect the ball early, as both quarterbacks fumbled and Frazier threw an interception.

James Madison returned a Brennan fumble for a touchdown and did the same with a Frazier interception on the next drive.

“When the offense gives the defense 14 points in a game that’s tough as it is,” Ambrose said. “But when the offense gives the defense 14 points in a span of three minutes, it’s a morale killer.”

Lee, who came into the game ranked 11th in the Football Championship Subdivision in passing yards, had no problem moving the ball for the Dukes (4-3, 2-2 CAA). He completed 24 of his 33 passes for 255 yards and three touchdowns, finishing the game with a quarterback rating of 161.6.

“I think he had done pretty much

We did get some really good pressure on him,” Ambrose said. “We got him to turn the ball over twice. Things build upon themselves either positively or negatively, and at the beginning of the third quarter, things were building negatively.”

Running back John Miller did most of the damage for James Madison in the second half, scoring three times in almost 10 minutes in the fourth quarter.

Towson had no time to try to establish a rushing game with Darius Victor, who came in ranked 12th in the FCS in rushing yards. Victor carried the ball just 12 times for 37 yards. He scored the only touchdown of the game for Towson, which came in the third quarter.

Neither Tiger quarterback found success against a James Madison team that was allowing over 240 passing yards per game. On eight attempts, Brennan averaged just over 7 yards per completion, and Frazier averaged 4.5 on 24 attempts. Frazier also threw an interception.

Towson had five fumbles, three of

which were recovered by the Dukes.

James Madison converted the four turnovers into 14 points on the day.

The Tigers will be back on the road for their annual meeting with the Delaware Blue Hens in Newark, Delaware on Saturday. The Blue Hens come into the matchup after a 34-24 win over Elon this weekend. The Delaware rushing defense is allowing 217.9 yards per game, a number that was lowered after it allowed just 76 yards against Elon. It ranked 112th in the Football Championship Subdivision before that game.

Towson will bring the 57th-ranked rushing attack, led by Victor, who has 674 yards and seven touchdowns on the season. Frazier also adds 216 yards and two touchdowns on the ground.

Blue Hens quarterback Trent Hurley

has thrown for 1,117 yards and six touchdowns and completed 64 percent of his passes. He’s found wide receiver Michael Johnson 42 times for 453 yards on the season.

The Tigers pass defense has struggled stopping opposing passers this season, allowing 242.9 passing yards and 11 touchdowns. Towson will look to win its first CAA game and avenge the 32-31 loss last season. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m.

Towson (2-10 overall, 0-3 in CAA) lost its fifth straight game with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Delaware Blue Hens (9-5, 3-0) on Sunday at Johnny Unitas Stadium.

The Tigers freshman goalkeeper Emilee Woodall made her third career start between the pipes after debuting as a starter last week. She took over for sophomore Megan Boyle, who started the first seven games of the season.

“We both are very encouraging toward each other,” Woodall said. “It’s a pleasure to work alongside of [Boyle].

She has made my transition onto the team and into college so much easier.”

Sunday, Woodall turned in a 12-save performance against the top team in the Colonial Athletic Association.

“I was much more comfortable in goal now having a couple of games under my belt,” Woodall said. “I feel as if my performance was where it should have been all along.”

There was little action in the opening nine minutes of the match apart from

one Delaware shot that Woodall saved.

Towson was first on the scoreboard when freshman midfielder Taylor Kvilhaug took the first penalty corner of the day 10 minutes in. She sent it in front of goal where junior forward Heather Jenney was set up to send a low shot toward the goal and into the bottom of the net for her third goal of the season, giving Towson an early 1-0 lead.

In the seven minutes after the Tigers goal, the Blue Hens dominated possession and earned all of the offensive opportunities. They registered five penalty corners and four shots.

Woodall was able to save two shots and another went wide, but 17 minutes into the game the Blue Hens scored off of a penalty corner of their own.

Midfielder Marjelle Scheffers inserted the ball to forward Meghan Winesett, who set up midfielder Esmee Peet for the shot and goal to tie things up at 1-1 with just less than 20 minutes remaining in the half.

Delaware added another four penalty corners and seven shots in the half, but couldn’t muster another goal. Towson

had a shot of their own, taken by senior forward Courtney Branco, but it was saved by Delaware’s goalkeeper Emmeline Oltmans to keep it tied going into halftime.

The second half was a much more back-and-forth affair. The Blue Hens took both the first penalty corner and the first shot of the half. The Tigers followed with a penalty corner and two shots of their own but the score remained level.

For a 10-minute stretch after that, Delaware maintained control and managed four more penalty corners and three shots, the last of which squeaked

The ball then fell to Scheffers, who put it in the net to give the away team a 2-1 lead with 20 minutes left in regulation.

Towson did fight back, taking three more shots and a penalty corner, but were unable to knot things up. Towson was outshot 20-7 on the afternoon and earned three penalty corners, Delaware had 17.

Why the Royals are winning JONATHAN MUNSHAW Editor-in-Chief @Jon_Munshaw

Editor’s note: This column was written prior to the start of Monday’s Game 3 of the American League Championship Series.

This is going to be really awkward given the cover story on the Baltimore Orioles, but this week, I’m going to break down what has made the Kansas City Royals successful through two games of the American League Championship Series.

At the start of the series, I predicted the Royals would win the series in seven games. It looks like they might not even need to go that long.

But before breaking down the first two games of the series, it’s important to look at how these two teams stacked up heading in to the start of the series.

At the plate, the advantage went to the Orioles.

Alex Gordon of the Royals was fifth in the majors in Wins Above Replacement (WAR), and Adam Jones, the highest ranked Oriole in that category, was 17 th. But Baltimore pulled away in the power categories.

Nelson Cruz was 17th in the league in weighted runs created (wRC+), and the Royals didn’t have anyone inside the top 40 (Gordon ranked 44th).

Baltimore also had three batters who ranked inside the top 30 in isolated power (the percentage of a player’s hits that go for extra bases): Cruz, Jones and Chris Davis. Gordon once again led Kansas City in that category, but ranked just 58th in the league.

But in the pitching categories, I gave the clear edge to the Royals.

James Shields was 19th among starters in WAR, and Yordano Ventura and Jason Vargas ranked 39th and 41st, respectively. Wei-Yin Chen led Orioles starters in that category, pulling in one spot behind Vargas.

(Fun fact: Ubaldo Jimenez wasn’t even worth one run over average replacement talent. Yikes.)

Now, I’m going to pull in a statistic I haven’t used in this column in the past: xFIP. Expected Fielding Independent Pitching is a modification of the statistic FIP. FIP measurers the ERA of a pitcher if he received league average performance from his fielders on balls in play. xFIP builds on that, and

adjusts the statistic for pitchers to receive league-average performance from fly balls turning into home runs.

Shields led the Royals in xFIP (3.56), ranking 33rd in the league.

Chen led the Orioles, ranking 46th among all qualified starters, and Ventrua came in behind Chen at 47th.

Bud Norris was the next highest ranking pitcher for Baltimore, ranking just inside the top 60.

Kansas City really began to separate itself with its relievers.

Andrew Miller led all Oriole relievers, finishing second, and Zach Britton (21st) and Tommy Hunter (50th) were the next best Baltimore relievers.

Finally, there’s the defenses. We’ll start out with Ultimate Zone Rating, which is probably the most popular sabermetric defensive statistic.

It’s far too complicated to explain in a column, but it basically “attempts to quantify how many runs a player saved or gave up through their field prowess,” according to Fangraphs.

Gordon led all players in UZR, but the O’s had three players inside the top 30: J.J. Hardy, Jones and Nick Markakis. Advantage, Orioles.

Given those matchups, how did the first two games of this series play out, and why do the Royals have

a 2-0 series lead?

For starters, Baltimore’s power advantage hasn’t translated so far, and the Royals’ pitching staff are doing a good job of keeping the Orioles in the park.

Obviously, two games is an awful sample size, but in the playoffs, you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.

In Game 1, Baltimore did not hit a home run, while Alcides Escobar, Gordon and Mike Moustakas each hit a dinger. Jones did hit one out of the park in Game 2, but Moustakas matched it in the fourth inning of Saturday’s game.

The Orioles also have three doubles in the series to Kansas City’s five.

On the mound, Kansas City’s bullpen has been dominant. Darren O’Day picked up the loss in both games, and has a 20.25 ERA for the series.

However, Baltimore’s two starters have combined to go for just 8.2 innings, compared to 10.2 for the Royals.

Wade Davis hasn’t allowed a run in three innings of relief and has surrendered just one run.

In Game 1, five of the six relievers Baltimore had to use gave up a hit after Chris Tillman went just 4.1 innings.

The Royals used four relievers in that game, combining to allow just four hits, including Brandon Finnegan, who didn’t record a single out.

In Game 2, O’Day and Britton gave up an earned run each, while the Royals shut down Baltimore’s lineup after Ventura went 5.2 innings.

If Baltimore wants to come back in this series, the power needs to wake up in the lineup, and the bullpen has to be flawless. Against the Royals’ relievers, there’s simply no other option.

As Delmon Young stood at home plate with the bases loaded and his team down, 6-4, to the Detroit Tigers in Game 2 of the ALDS on Oct. 2, Towson senior Jack Dana focused his television camera from the third-base side camera deck on the Orioles pinch hitter.

Tigers’ reliever Joakim Soria threw a hanging pitch and Young made solid contact. Dana, a member of the Orioles’ video production team, kept the camera on Young as his hit flew down the left field line and bounced off the wall.

Junior Brian Baublitz Jr. and sophomore Montae Kerney jumped up with the rest of the tarp crew in the right field crew cage

as J.J. Hardy made his way around third base. Hardy slid in safely past the tag and Baublitz and Kerney screamed and joined in on a “mosh pit” inside the cage.

Dana, with his camera still fixed on Young, had to deal with the camera deck shaking from the noise of the crowd. After Young arrived safely at second, even Dana had to take in the moment.

“It’s hard because you’re super excited but you have to follow [players],” Dana said. “You have to wait until after the play happens to take a step back and realize what just happened.”

As team employees, Dana, Baublitz and Kerney got to witness firsthand one of the most notable moments in recent Orioles history that day.

They are part of a handful of Towson students that have worked with the

Orioles during their historic 2014 season and postseason.

“This has been my only real job,” Baublitz said. “This is basically how I make my money. [I do it] just because I love the team. I’ve always gone to games before that.

This is just a way to make money doing something that I always loved doing.”

Baublitz, the longest tenured of the three Towson students, has been working on the tarp crew since the 2012 season. He wanted to join the crew even in high school, but he would have had to give up playing football to be able to do so.

Instead, he waited until he got to college to join. His boss, Rob Doetsch, brought him in for an open interview in February of 2012 and he got the job for that season.

Lucky for him, the Orioles made their first postseason run in 15 years and he got to work the October games.

However, he said the playoff mentality is different this year.

“It 2012, it was just a relief to be there,” Baublitz said. “It was not expected and… they come out of nowhere and they win there. It was one of ‘Happy to be there’ moments. This year we have an expectation… We’re planning on making noise and have made noise in the playoffs.”

Kerney joined Baublitz at the start of 2013 season after Doetsch came to Landsdowne High School, where his mother worked. She recommended Kerney because she knew he was a fan of the team.

Doetsch called Kerney and asked him to come in for an interview and he accepted.

After that process, he joined the tarp crew and was asked to come back for the 2014 season.

He worked ALDS and ALCS this year as his first postseason experience, and he said his job is the same as it was during the regular season. However, he noted one distinct difference.

“As we drag the field in between innings, it was just louder,” Kerney said. “Just more high intensity from the fans, so you could tell there were more fans and there was a playoff situation compared to the regular season.”

Kerney and Baublitz are part of a tarp crew that is responsible for many assignments during the course of a game. These tasks include installing a cleat cleaner, “dragging” the field in the third and sixth innings, switching bases and working the bullpen.

Kerney said his favorite part of the job is working the bullpen, where he’s able to sit on the bench with players like Tommy

Hunter and Darren O’Day. “We talk to the pitchers and communicate with the pitchers,” he said. “I guess you could say we’re friends with the pitchers. I could go up to Tommy Hunter right now and say ‘Tommy’ and he would know who I am.”

However, the job isn’t all fun. When it rains, the work becomes much harder. Both Babulitz and Kerney say pulling the tarp during a rain delay is much harder than it looks.

“When the rain is pouring on [the tarp] and you got all the thousands of fans screaming at you, you can barely hear your boss, it’s really stressful,” Baublitz said.

“Especially when it’s pouring down rain.

That rain accumulates quick. Once that tarp is out there, you have to go.”

Dana may not have to pull a heavy tarp, but he often carries a heavy television camera during the pregame ceremonies as part of his job in the production department.

He’s in his first year with the Orioles, after he completed a summer internship with the team and was asked to come back as an employee.

Dana, an electronic media and film major, starts his day by hooking up the camera, located on the club level on the third and first base sides, and making sure the video control room gets a feed from each. After he sets up a wireless camera in the control room, he sometimes finds himself going onto to the field to film pregame ceremonies.

During his time with the team, he shot and edited music videos for the scoreboard.

He even said hello to Derek Jeter.

Last week, Dana got to work his first playoff game. It seems he had the same feeling as Kerney.

“I’ve been a fan since I was a little kid, so I’ve been to a crap ton of games, but I’ve never been to a playoff game,” he said. “The difference is amazing. It’s so electric compared to all the games I’ve been to. Usually during the regular season, people slowly flood in. For the playoff games… there’s like everyone in the stadium and it’s like ‘this is how it feel to be on the field.’”

All three students got the chance to work the ALCS on Friday and Saturday. Although the chances of the Orioles returning home this season are slim, all three said they have enjoyed the ride.

“When there’s so much at stake, there’s just so much more excitement from us, from the fans, from everybody involved,” Baublitz said. “It’s just gets us excited just to be a part of it.”
