A MOLTEN ROCK SCULPTURE Italy, Kingdom of the Two Sicilies, late 18th cent Depicting the head of a centaur (a youth) discovered in 1736 in the garden of Villa Adriana at Tivoli, the discovery of these superb pieces created a period of exaltation that influenced well-known sculptors to reproduce the works in order to valorize their glorious country. This sculpture of intense and extraordinary plasticity rests on a peach-blossom marble base with

an ebony pedestal, the central part of the column bears a silver oval plaque made up of laurel wreaths and with bourbon lilies bearing the initials of S. M. Francesco I (1777-1830) and in the centre, is surmounted by a royal crown. The object is of extraordinary beauty and workmanship. In excellent condition, minor losses.
