IMPROVISED SHELTER 101  Regardless of the climate, the situation, the materials at hand, or the urgency, Improvised shelters have many things in common. All of  which need to be taken into consideration during your design, and construction. Some quick shelters needed for immediate expediency  can with just a few simple things be turned into long term shelters, that can protect you until no longer needed. Let’s look at each of  these things individually.     1) GET OFF THE GROUND: Maybe you enjoy playing in the mud, or maybe hypothermia is a close friend,  either way, this may not be your favorite one, but it is important. Even a few inches of separation from  the earth can conserve body heat, protect you from biting insects, keep you dry in many climates, and  help you to stay warm / cool depending on the situation. You can accomplish this using a platform made  of ~2” saplings tied together with whatever cordage or wire may be available, or by using a slat and  grove system cut into the frame if cordage is scarce. Clean pine boughs covering the platform with the  bend facing up ( the opposite of a leaf spring for example) will add some pliability and offer additional  protection.      2) GET OUT OF THE RAIN: This one should be obvious, but what is less obvious sometimes is that all  kinds of exposure can be very harmful in excess. As such each environmental factor needs to be  considered. Are you in a tropical / semi-tropical environment (like here in Florida) palm fronds can be  placed like shingles starting at the lowest edge and proceeding by placing following rows over the  last. If that type of vegetation isn’t available, grass thatching can be used in the same way, as can  large thin flat rocks if there is proper support in place. Also remember in some areas natural  windbreaks and shelters can be used as a basis for a shelter and then quickly improved upon.     As a last resort, a tarp, poncho, heavy plastic sheeting, or any other flat waterproof material can be used for a roof using the button  method. Place a small stone, coin, clump of grass, or snow between the size of a dime and a quarter under your material, loop a slip  knot over the “button” and tighten down, secure it with an overhand locking knot, and then tie off your cordage. Ensure that the trailing  edge, (the one facing away from the wind, is higher than the leading edge to allow your material to shed precipitation.      3) BE ABLE TO BREATHE: Okay, so this is kind of snarky, but it is an important rule: controlled air flow into  and out of your shelter in a must. If you are going to use this shelter for any length of time, poor ventilation  will lead to health issues of its own, molds and fungus love damp poorly ventilated settings. Many of these  can be severely neurotoxic, and long-term exposure can lead to permanent issues. Also in cold environments  poor ventilation can lead to various types of poisoning from smoke and carbon monoxide, from heating fires.     The Three Percenters - Original

4) ADAPT TO YOUR ENVIRONMENT: Your shelter will have very different needs if you are in South Dakota in  February, or in Texas in August. Remember, no single shelter plan will EVER be able to cover all of your needs  for every environment. Be sure though that your shelter stays clean, the inside stays dry, and that overall it is  kept in good repair, a small hole can lead to issues with water intrusion, and hypothermia is a silent killer, that  takes more lives at 55 above than it does at 40 below.       5) IF POSSIBLE SCRAPE TO BARE EARTH: Depending on your situation you may not be able to  do this, but if possible removing the vegetation and loose soil under your shelter is a good place to  start. It will ensure you do not have any surprise allergies from rolling into some shiny leaves in the  middle of the night, or bites from insects etc, hiding in the vegetation. In Cases where the ground is  covered with hard packed snot this is not always necessary, or even possible.       6) DRESS APPROPRIATELY FOR YOUR ENVIRONMENT: While Naked and Afraid makes for fun television,  being underdressed can be life threatening, Your clothing is your first and most important shelter, and you  should take care of it as such. We will cover improvised clothing and tools in another installment as we can.       As we continue this series with each Environment, and with care to improvised shelter methods for each area, we will get into more  specialized techniques to combat the challenges specific to that situation.

AMMO RELOADING BASICS

___________________________________________________________________________________   I am sure everyone remembers the ammo shortages that we experienced during the Obama Administration, once common  and easy to find ammunition became difficult if not nearly impossible to find. When you were able to find ammunition,  retailers were either rationing sales or the prices of ammunition were raised to the point that stockpiling ammunition was  cost prohibitive in most situations.    In the future will this happen again, possibly if not likely, as many left leaning politicians have already realized that banning  firearms is difficult if not impossible. The Heller decision reaffirmed the right of the individual to own a firearm, in the  decision they also reaffirmed the ruling of United States V. Miller which found that the second amendment does not limit  the right to keep and bear arms to militia purposes, but rather limits the type of weapon to which the right applies to those  used by the militia, i.e., those in common use for lawful purposes. However, to date there has been no ruling that protects  the sale and/or purchase of ammunition, as such many of the aforementioned politicians have realized that regulating  ammunition purchases or banning the sale of ammunition is a more attainable goal.

SO WHY SHOULD YOU RELOAD?

1. The first and foremost being that you can stockpile reloading supplies and when properly stored, reloading supplies

will keep nearly indefinitely. If another shortage were to happen, the sale of ammunition regulated, or an outright ban on ammunition; you would still be able to produce ammunition for your weapons.

2. In reloading your own ammunition you can reload more ammunition for the same money as purchasing ammunition. However we will get into some of the numbers later in this article to put things into perspective.  The Three Percenters - Original

5

March 2019 Issue

3. In reloading your own ammunition you are able to load higher quality ammunition tailored specifically to your weapon, than comparable ammunition of the same type.

4. Perhaps my favorite reason for reloading is that it allows you to shoot more. More shooting means more training,

more training means more proficiency. Shooting is a depreciating skill, if you do not use it and you do not practice, you will lose proficiency.

IS RELOADING RIGHT FOR YOU?

Reloading is not right for everyone, if you are the guy that only goes to the range a couple of times a year and only goes  through a few boxes of ammunition on each trip to the range, your time to recoup your equipment costs will be significant.  If you are someone that is constantly busy and seldom has free time, then reloading is probably not for you either as it can  be rather time consuming. However, if you are someone that goes to the range on a regular basis or goes through a  considerable amount of ammunition on your range trips and has the time to spare, then it very well could be a great thing to  investigate and possibly delve into.    By no means should anyone go into reloading thinking that they can reload thousands of rounds of ammunition in a couple  of hours, proper and safe production of ammunition can be a very time consuming process and requires a significant amount  of attention to detail.         The Three Percenters - Original

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BEGIN RELOADING, WHAT DOES IT COST, & HOW MUCH CAN YOU SAVE?

Let us start with a basic list of equipment needed to get into reloading, you will need:     - Reloading Press  - Reloading Dies  - Powder Scale  - Powder Measure  - Primer Inserter  - Brass trimmer (for rifle cases only)     All together you can get started for about $250 by purchasing a lee breech lock challenger kit, a set of reloading dies, and a  cartridge specific trim die. You can get started a bit cheaper if you are able to find and purchase used equipment.    Lee does make good equipment and they are one of, if not the most economical manufacturer; however their equipment is  largely considered entry level.

For the purposes of the remainder of this discussion we are going to assume we are reloading the 55 grain .223 Remington  cartridge, using collected once fired range brass.    For consumables in reloading these cartridges you have the brass, powder, primer, and projectiles. It is important to note  that like most things we buy, it is typically cheaper to purchase reloading supplies in bulk. Links to where supplies can be  purchased can be found in the reloading space of the forums located at https://forum.thethreepercenters.org     Powder can typically be found for somewhere between 25-40 dollars a pound for commercial powder and surplus pull down  powder can normally be had for 17-20 dollars per pound. It is important to note that there are 7000 grains of powder to 1  pound.     Primers do vary from 23-36 dollars per 1000 depending on retailer and brand.     Projectiles vary wildly in price depending on brand, new or pulled, and retailer.     My particular charge weight for a round is 23.5 grains of H335 or WC-844, this comes out to about 300 rounds per pound  of power.  The Three Percenters - Original

March 2019 Issue

The breakdown of costs looks something like this:     Primers: $28.00 per 1000, or 0.028 cents per round  Powder: $150.00 per 8 pounds of WC-844, $18.75 per pound or 0.063 cents per round  Projectiles: (New) $80.00 per 1000, or 0.08 cents per round     So total cost per round for a round of brass cased 55 grain 223 is about 17.1 cents per round, the cheapest available for  purchase of a well-known manufacturer per ammoseek.com, at the time of writing, is 24.8 cents per round. While that is  only a savings of 7.7 cents a round, over a thousand rounds that is a savings of about $77.     In conclusion, after you reload the first 3000 rounds of ammunition your equipment has paid for itself and the savings from  that point forward is dependent solely on the volume of ammunition you go though.     For me personally this savings is very significant, as I will easily go through at least 10,000 rounds of 223 during the  non-winter months, equating to a savings of about $770 throughout the course of the shooting season.    The savings becomes more significant when you add additional calibers and ammo types such as match grade ammo,  various hunting rounds and specific training rounds. As an example my cost to reload 168 Grain Sierra MatchKing 308  Winchester, is roughly 39 cents per round vs a retail cost of 1.26 per round for Federal Premium Gold Medal 168 Grain  Sierra MatchKing 308 Winchester. For a savings of 87 cents per round or $870 per 1000 rounds.    Stay tuned for our next installment, where we will discuss the reloading process itself. Until then, keep shooting.

How would  you  describe  your  leadership  style,  and  why  do  you  think  it  has  been  effective  (since it obviously  has)?      Honesty  is  my  number  one  policy.  I  am  straight  forward  with  my  members,  and  I  always  try  to  present  myself  with  confidence.  If  you  do  not  carry  yourself  with  confidence,  how  can  you  expect  others  to  be  confident  in  you?  I  try  to  be  relatable  and  I  believe  my  members  key  on  that  and  it has made us all closer for it. I have an open door policy, so members  can always contact me, and many have.    Do  you  have  a  favorite  amendment/a  favorite  historical  moment  in  America’s  history/Favorite  President and  why?      My  favorite  amendment,  I  would  have  to  say  is  the  entire  Bill of Rights, because they outline basic fundamental liberties of  all  living  beings.  Probably  one  of  my  favorite  moments  in  history  that  I  witnessed  was  the  aftermath  of  9/11.  To  see  this  country so united, so together was an amazing thing. I only want to see that again.    Any personal role models?     My  number  one  role  model  is  my  father.  He  is  a  baptist  minister  and  raised  me  in  church.  He  helped  to  form  me  into  the  man I am today and instilled in me a work ethic that has gotten me where I am today.    Where would you like to see the organization in the future?     I  would  love  nothing more to see our organization on the forefront of political activism and constitutional preservation. Also,  to  see  us  be  a  major  contributing  factor  in  natural  disaster  situations.  I  want  us  to  be  a welcoming and inviting cause, one  that interests entire families and not just the back sheep.    Do you have any advice for your fellow leaders in the group?     If  I  could  give  any  advice,  number  one,  BE  CONFIDENT.  Lead  by  example  and  not  just  with  your  words.  Develop  personal  relationships  with  your  members  and  don’t  just  treat  them  as  members,  and  never  forget  you  have  other  leadership  members  who  are  there to help. I couldn’t have accomplished a single goal of mine within our organization without my team  and I give them all the gratitude of this reward.     Do you have anything else you would like to share?    To  give  a  good  summary  about  myself  and  our  state,  I  am  a  very  driven  hard  working  individual.  I  set  goals  and  strive  to  achieve  them  every  single  day.  I  form  routines  and  follow  them  each  day  to  ensure  a  good flow. I use those same concepts  with  my  leadership  and  with  our  state.  We  have  set  up schedules for communication and events to keep a good construct. I  help  to  initiate  chat  groups  with  our  districts  and  zones  to  promote  better  personal  relationships  between  our  members.  Georgia  has  come  from  the  lowest  of  lows  just a few short months back when we lost over two thirds of our membership to  a  leadership  exodus.  We  have  risen  from  the  ashes  and  turned  Georgia  in  the  right direction. We hope to be a light for this  organization and for our people.

Thank you Mr. Dalton Jones for all of your hard work within the organization and thank you for the wise words of encouragement to the your fellow three  percenters! We wish and pray for your state’s success!

Everyone’s busy. We understand that. There comes a point in one’s life that priorities must take hold. We ask that you make this organization one of those priorities. Not only do others in this  organization need you, but our country needs you. We beckon all to organize and meet together  often, to train and to learn from each other. Every member of the team is valuable and needed.  Together we are not only friends, but we’re family. These connections and networks that we develop  as patriots will absolutely be imperative in the years to come as our country’s freedoms continue to  erode more and more everyday. So stand up and be counted among patriots who are trying to  make a difference in not only their own lives, but in the lives of their children and grandchildren and  future generations to come. Let’s leave them a country that we can be proud of. Wake up. Get  active. Join the forum. Join the discussion. We’re waiting on you. Our country is depending on you.

“With the rise in popularity of socialism and anti-American sentiment, it seems there are  fewer & fewer patriot minded citizens who  want to keep all things American in  America. I felt it to be my duty to find an  organization that sticks to traditional  American values, and the Constitution of  The United States of America where I can  contribute in anyway I can to keeping those  values for future generations. A lack of  freedom & liberty will surely lead to tyranny  and oppression. I believe the Three  Percenters - Original is the organization  that best fits the purpose & mission to  achieve that common goal, and that is what  drew me to this organization.”
