Centennial 2016 — The Tam News

Dear Reader, In 1916, The Tam News was founded, just eight years after the opening of Tamalpais High School in 1908. Since this is our 100th anniversary, we decided to take a look back through our archives to see how Tam has changed this past century. When sorting through past articles, we often shared a bewildered laugh at the absurd, blatant racism and sexism in stories. We frequently came across antiquated terms or outdated traditions, such as the term “negro,” the phrase “pitching woo,” or the yearly “Baby Day.” Other events, such as the Cold War, are familiar to us through our history books, but the archives give unique insight into daily life under the prospect of nuclear war, severe economic depression, or post-9/11 fear. The urgency and trepidation felt by students at the time is clear through these archived stories. Despite the 100 years that have passed since the founding of The Tam News, in many ways we have remained the same. Tam students have always gossipped, pulled pranks, and advocated change, and The Tam News was there to document it. Enjoy the bizarre, intriguing, and shockingly relatable stories of past issues, but remember to not dismiss the discrimination as a problem of the past, or previous events as irrelevant to our lives, as they have shaped the world we live in today. Take the opportunity to learn from our mistakes and reminisce our successes— and consider what in today’s society will seem absurd in another 100 years.
