A Look Back at Class and Champions 2012 Graduates Capture Memories Through Success Matson Kane, Drew Davis and Clayton Cullen Staff Writers

Four years ago, the class of 2012 sat in the auditorium, like the many classes before them, and listened to Principal Jeff Butts annual spiel about not only meeting the past years’ standards, but also raising the bar. When the meeting adjourned, the class of 2012 walked out knowing they had very big shoes to fill. These kids were walking the halls of a high school that within only a few years of opening, had an exemplary academic record, a state-run in football and boys’ basketball, a state championship in girls’ basketball and boys’ cross country, 2 marching band state championship titles, 2 UIL state championship titles, and a Lone Star Cup ‘Best in Texas’ championship. To say the shoes these kids had to fill were just big would be a major understatement.

See all the senior ads and plans for the future on pages 6-11!

Since that time, in a span of only four years, the class of 2012 has accumulated over 500 team sport wins and less than 100 losses. This unprecedented success could not have been made possible without the individuals that helped create this dynasty. It is individuals like Jessie Johnson, a three time pole vaulting state champion; Austin Aune, a highly sought after MLB prospect and the All-State MVP for the 2011 3A state football playoffs; Ben Woolums and Jon Clark, the dynamic math and science duo, and leaders of the defending state champion UIL and TMSCA math and science teams, surrounded by their high-achieving teammates that have made this class so special. Not only has this class dominated at sports and academics, they have also been part of two state marching band championships, and many other fine arts awards have added to the success. To put a number on all the commendable students in this years’

When asked his thoughts about this year’s graduating class, Mr. Butts said, “[He is] most proud, not of the accomplishments on the field or in the classroom, but of how this group of students has matured over these four years and for the contributions they have made to the community of Argyle.” Butts went on to say that, “The classes of the future will have very large shoes to fill.” Overall, there is no question about the quality of talent within the class of 2012. There is no question about the work ethic that this class has displayed each and every day. However, there is a looming question about the future of this year’s graduating class. What will come next? One simple word immediately comes to mind. One word that we, as the class of 2012, have earned over these rigorous four years– GREATNESS.

Tennis Duo Captures State Championship Blake, Schorlemmer Finish Senior Year with Gold Emma Welsh Staff Writer After returning to state for their fourth year, seniors Maddie Schorlemmer and Lacy Blake take gold, being the only team to defeat Abilene Wylie at state. The tournament took place at the University of Texas at Austin’s tennis stadium on April 31st and May 1st, the stadium courts making for a loud crowd. Abilene Wylie took first in every other area of the competition except girls’ doubles with Schorlemmer and Blake preventing a sweep from the defending state team tennis champions and creating the biggest upset of the tournament. “It being my last year to accomplish something I have wanted since I was a freshman really made this year special,” Schorlemmer said. “No matter what I was going to give it my all.” The first round proved to be difficult, Schorlemmer and Blake losing the first set 6-7(5) to Vernon, however Blake was confident they could come back and win. “I already had in my mind that we had it and we could get to the

finals,” Blake said. “I was trying to not be too excited and play like it was a practice, but it was really hard.” With such a tight first match, the girls faced a much easier match in the semifinals, winning 6-0, 6-0 in less than an hour. The following day the girls competed in the finals for the state championship against the top 3A tennis team, Abilene Wylie. “After walking off the court for a break all that was going through my head was ‘give everything you have,’” Schorlemmer said. “I wasn’t going to let us lose.” With a very close third set, Schorlemmer and Blake pulled State champion tennis duo poses with team members left to right, Marissa Brazeel, Lacy Blake, out a win in the final set 6-4, Maddie Schorlemmer, Daniel Howell, Jack Vickery, Margaret Stein, and Emma Welsch.
