Dear Trendsetters, As I walked into Bait Al-Othman last month to attend the wedding of two Brazilians that chose to take their vows in their newly found home Kuwait, I was truly and utterly mesmerized. Set in the most traditional Kuwaiti wedding style, all attendees were asked to dress in ‘old-Kuwaiti traditional clothes.’ I never imagined ‘old-Kuwaiti traditional clothes’ could look so glamorous!!! But then again, trust the Kuwaitis to be able to pull anything out of the closet and turn it into a fashion statement!!! When I asked my friend where she got her ravishing outfit from, she said it was a vintage ‘thoub’that she borrowed from her mother and had added her magical contemporary twist to. Unfortunately, no one sells a ‘thoub’ anymore, so if you are lucky enough to have one, hold on to it and keep passing it on through the generations. If not, your best bet is to buy black tulle and tartar fabrics and try to relive the golden moments of the past. May 2013 be a revival of the golden past, on all levels. Till next issue, Zeina Mokaddam

A new year and a new position at PH7! From marketing executive to editor, the year ahead looks to be one of the most exciting for me, and for the world of fashion. I’ve been anticipating the start of 2013 like no other before. No need for New Year’s resolutions. I have already accomplished mine. I look forward to embarking on this journey with you, our wonderful readers!

This month I have faced a two new challenge at TheTalk, designing the cover and being the acting managing editor. This experience was, different, tiring, fun and very rewarding. At the same time is gave the inspiration for cover; 2013 a new year a new perspective. I am fortunate to have had this opportunity to see the all so familiar from a different angle. I hope you enjoy the cover and you feel invited to view it from different angles and discover new elements every time you look at it. May 2013 bring us a new and better perspective on our lives.

THETALK / January / 2013

The only guaranteed element of fashion is that of certain change. For us, fashion is an extension of ourselves, it is a conscious state of mind. In 2013 fashion is about converting confidence into individual style and, above all else, wearing it well.

Every year, I make 100 resolutions of things I want to change in my life. Every year, I find myself making the same resolutions I made the year before. This year, I decided not to have any.. and my only resolution is to have no resolution! Life is about embracing the moment and living in the “now” rather than being caught up planning for it when it happens, as you might actually miss it. May 2013 be full of your presence in every moment.

To a great New Year

Thank you to all our customers who contributed to us becoming a Superbrand for 2013. We truly appreciate your continued trust and support and wish you a Happy New Year.

Close-UP & Personal Shopping Hannah Delaimi

THETALK / January / 2013

he half Kuwaiti half British stunner is the Personal Shopper for Topshop. With an exquisite fashion sense and bubbly personality, she fits the part perfectly. Our first impression was her beauty and elegance. Walking into the personal shopper suite she greets us with a mouthful of food, she blushes covering her mouth saying ‘sorry I haven’t had time to eat at all today’ and straight away offers us coffee and cookies. She quickly freshens up and sits down with us to answer our questions.

Have you had previous modeling experiences?

What brought you to personal shopping?

What are the difficulties of your job in terms of styling?

It started at college in the UK, I studied art and design, and we also did fashion, it was one of the units we took. We did concept design for fashion dresses, so they weren’t your average dresses, they had an inspiration behind it, there was a story, so that triggered it off. I always loved textiles, I actually wanted to study textiles initially, I love fabrics, just different interesting fabrics. But I opted to study interior design which is broader. I still loved fashion so I would help my friends pick their outfits all the time, then I came back to Kuwait and there was the opportunity to become personal shopper for Topshop. Do you have any side projects at the moment? Well I started this job, then I met lady fozaza at the opening of Topshop, at the mall of the emirates, we hit it off there and then. I dressed her up along with her mum and aunt. She asked me if I wanted to style her autumn/ winter collection for 2012. So I did the photo shoot and styled the models, of course it was pro bono, I was just happy to do it for the experience. It was nice to be asked but she did give me jackets to say thank you which I loved, not going to say no to that. We became friends after that and ever since then that’s what I’ve been doing. I also do a little bit of blogging on the side, stylenscones.wordpress. com, I’m not as active on my blog, I’m morwe active on instagram. I get a lot of requests from designers. I had the t-shirt policy approach me, some necklace designers, and coming up there is another designer also that wants me to style her stuff up but she also wants me to wear it, so she wants me to style it up myself and wear it myself.

Not really, to be honest I’m not interested in modeling, I’m more interested in the styling, but if that’s what it takes to get the message across then I’ll do it. I mean sometimes I style my friends up and take pictures of them. I’d love to style you girls up! *It was adorable how whenever she would say something good about herself she would lower her voice, do a little shrug and side smile.

The hard part is trying to convince a girl that she is not fat. Most girls have this complexity that they’re fat. I had a girl today who was a size 8 and she’s beautiful and her figure is gorgeous and she’s petite, that’s the hardest part, and getting them to think outside the box, because most people tend to get stuck in like a specific style and they don’t want to change that and they are afraid to because oh no people would stare at me or oh no I’m not myself, you know? But what is yourself? You are just a beautiful girl, that’s all you are, you should try new things, look different every day why not? Lifes too short to be that girl that always wears black. It’s a shame. When you’re with the customer what do you say to the ones who don’t want to experiment and are scared to? Because it’s one thing when they are with you and you know how to put things together but once they get home they may make a mess of it, what advice can you give them so that they go along the right path? My advice would be definitely try it on first, see what it looks like on before you make your decision, because some girls will be like no no no, quite stubborn. And then i will tell them you know the changing room is big you can take your time and try them on, if you really hate it the worst thing is that you’ll just take it off, but I am sure once you have it on you’ll see how you really feel, and they do, they try it on and usually they love it, like 80% of the time they love it. If they don’t then I’ll find them alternative solutions, so I would swap it to something maybe that they can gradually learn to change their style with, so if they’re completely against studs or sequins for instance. And sequins are

very in at the moment, like glitter is very in, so I’ll find something with a very soft touch of it that will help transition then into getting more brave and for them to start enjoying their life fashion wise. Do you see a change in the customer within the personal shopping hour? Yes definitely. With some girls the appointments could be from a half hour to an hour and a half, but most girls come out like ‘Hannah oh my god, I never thought I’d wear that but now I do thank you, I never thought it would suit me, I always saw it on other girls and I knew I loved it but I never actually thought I’d try it.’ What are your future goals when it comes to fashion? Honestly, I’m the kind of person that just goes with the flow, so I don’t know where this is going to take me but for the time being I’m really enjoying it. It’s lots of fun! It’s a very colourful brand that I work for and there’s a lot to learn from Al-Shaya as well. So I’m also learning a lot from all their experience, so I’m happy doing that for the time being, I think for a while I’ll be happy doing that. Would you be interested in designing a line of your own? Designing, yes! But probably not clothes something else. *Keeps us suspended. Furniture! My heart is in furniture design. That is a side hobby I have. I’m working on something but it’s a surprise! What are the basics that every girl should have in her wardrobe? Definitely a blazer that has exquisite fabric so that it’s classy but at the same time it fits kind of like a boyfriend jacket, so it’s sexy at the same time. She can dress it up, she can dress it down and she can take that blazer with her wherever she goes. Definitely a nice pair of jeans. I think a really nice white t-shirt, that’s key! That as well you can dress up or down, slouchy with a big Chanel bag, or you can have it tucked into a pencil skirt, you know just a plain white t-shirt you have to have that in your cupboard.

THETALK / January / 2013

Are there any fall trends you’re loving? I love the whole glitter sequins that kind of thing. I love the vintage looks that are in like the whole 50s style, the Dolce and Gabbana rococo stuff that’s going on. It’s very classy and elegant but also normal and casual so you can wear it out to a restaurant with a pair of jeans. What tips can you give to take an outfit from casual to evening? Definitely again the blazer, and a statement clutch, possibly a statement necklace or a statement watch as well and a nice pair of pumps. So she can be wearing a t-shirt and jeans and then she can put on her gold pumps, elegant blazer, and statement clutch and boom she’s ready for dinner. You said every day you should wear a different look, is there one in specific you feel suits your personality most? At some point I felt I was quite hippy and then I loved the whole indie thing and then I loved the whole classic look. It evolves along with the weather, my mood. Some days I’m feeling to dress grunge or some days I’m feeling extra bubbly so ill wear like gold or like bright colours or whatever. But honestly I love all fashion all different looks. I don’t limit myself. But one thing that is common in all my different looks is wearable, comfortable and functional. So I won’t wear something that is awkward for me. It has to be so that I can get on with my daily routine, whatever that is.

around with so that next time all they need to add is something simple. For example, if you had one of the Lady Fozaza blazers, if it had a few colours on it, you can change the t-shirt underneath and then as bottoms you can rotate it. One day you can wear your bright blue trousers, cigarette cut, and then one day you could wear it with a lime green pencil skirt, then your clutch, you would have about 3 and then you swap them around as well. Then you are good to go so as long as you invest in your statement pieces. Invest in your clutch and your blazer. What do you have in your bag?

If you have woken up late and don’t have time to think, what is your go-to outfit? An oversized top, I love oversized stuff, tighter bottoms, and a statement necklace. When should one let go of an item? Definitely if it is torn or faded get rid of it and if you flick through a fashion magazine and realize something is outdated it’s probably time to move on. What basics should every girl have in her closet? They need neutrals for basics then they have the statement bold pieces that they can play

My Benefit Cha-Cha lip stain and the Volume Million Lashes Mascara from L’Oreal, some panadol, a Mac brush, with my blusher which is called Super continental, it’s quite an orange shade, but on it looks quite soft. I usually like red lipstick, I love plum shades, and they’re quite IN at the moment and my wallet. I usually have more stuff to carry, and I usually have a small hairbrush.

With the interview over we walked away feeling inspired and excited about experimenting with fashion. Having an array of new ideas and tips, we are ready to make every day a catwalk.

Master of Couture Valentino Garavani

Valentino Garavani gave us a glimpse of what goes on in his magical world in his very real and beautifully made documentary Valentino: The Last Emperor back in 2008. And now, after more than 50 years of dressing the world’s most glamorous women from Hollywood icons to royalty in his own image of elegance and glamour, he is showcasing 130 of his masterpieces at the Valentino: Master of Couture exhibition at Somerset House in London.

THETALK / January / 2013

he exhibition is divided into three sections; the first takes you through an archive of his personal sketches, photographs, homemade videos and plenty of other memorabilia, intimately showing the designer’s private life in work and in play. In the second part, you experience a reverse in roles as visitors walk onto a six-meter red carpeted runway where there are 130 mannequins playing as the audience, dressed in the hand-crafted couture creations, in a variety of poses across the audience chairs. Of the many one of a-kind pieces, there are a few very recognizable ones, such as the iconic black velvet and tulle evening gown worn by Julia Roberts when she won an Academy Award in 2001. Also, the unforgettable dress Jackie Onassis wore for her wedding back in 1968 from Valentino’s White Collection. The third part is a virtual museum playing a series of films depicting “Le Ragazze di Valentino” (Valentino’s Girls), demonstrating the pain-staking techniques that go into the making of couture. A special view showcases the wedding dress of Princess Marie-Chantel of Greece, intricately assembled and embellished by 25 mistresses. Lastly, visitors have a chance

to shop at the Valentino Exhibition gift store. There is a range of sunglasses from the designer’s eyewear collection, limited edition animal print totes, and plenty of other goodies to purchase as mementos. The hand crafted designs will be displayed until March 3rd 2013. Valentino’s many designer lines however, are available all year round. This includes Valentino, Valentino Garavani, Valentino Roma, and R.E.D. Valentino. His designs have made a huge spectacle in the fashion world. ‘I am especially grateful that I have been able to keep my own style over the decades, in spite of the many changes that have taken place in the world of fashion and in its business’ – Valentino. And that he has - in his designs and in their presentation. As aptly titled documentary ‘Valentino: the Last Emperor’ suggests, he came, he saw, he conquered.

Best of 2012 -Backstage View European Union Last year’s fashion shows were nothing short of brilliant. We all love watching them; however, we are more interested in what happens behind the scenes. So we are giving you a backstage view of the best shows this year. Let’s kick off with Europe! From London to Milan these designer’s set the bar high with their innovative fashion styling. Christopher Kane presented his collection with a futuristic theme. Fashion Fringe expressed their structured style, with the clothes, accessories and even hair and makeup. House of Holland’s unique shoes titillated our design minds and Peter Pilotto showed us the art of minimalism. Unconditional pushed the boundaries of fashion and as always, it worked perfectly. And of course, an absolute favourite of ours is Vivienne Westwood and her Red Label line. She always expresses her sense of humour on the runway and the wacky hair and bold face makeup was in perfect theme of that. These designers definitely left audiences wanting so much more.

THETALK / January / 2013

Best of 2012 Backstage View Across the Pond Over in the US, Focus Taiwan surprised attendees with the models walking the runway with their faces covered. Did the show remind anyone of the America’s Next Top Model challenge where the models had to do the same? Keeping the attention off of hair and make-up and only on the clothes is a dramatic yet relative statement. On the other side of the spectrum Gerlan Jeans offered a whimsical look as the models styled to adorable buns with coloured braids pinned to them. Lars Andersson also added a touch of braids, incorporating it with a simplistic grunge style. We were amused by the Ricardo Seco models approach to backstage down time and Cynthia Rowley incorporated her garments with a mix of pretty doll-like makeup and messy hair.

THETALK / January / 2013

Best of 2012 -Backstage View Best for Last Of course no year is complete without the most entertaining catwalk shows! Betsey Johnson & The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. We’re so happy to see that Betsey bounced back from bankruptcy. She’s back stronger than ever and still, at the age of 70, finishing her shows off with her signature back flip. Thankfully, only on stage and not into a pool like she did back in 2002 to celebrate her 60th. The Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show is always a success year after year. The stunning ladies were joined by Rihanna, Justin Beiber and Bruno Mars. All performing incredibly, complimenting the extravagance of the Angels!

Sophisticatedly Eccentric Cara Delevingne Cara Delevingne is rising to the top of the fashion world at the young age of 20. Following in her sister’s footsteps, she signed with Storm Models Agency 3 years ago. In this short time she has quickly catapulted from a privileged socialite to an in-demand model. Her strong brows and cheekbones give her the highly sought after Androgynous look, along with soft features and a young spirit, she has an adaptable look which makes her a designer’s dream.

THETALK / January / 2013

41 eing so versatile, she landed a spot in the B hottest show of the year, the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. And as she rounded up the season with shows such as Chanel, Burberry, Oscar De La Renta and Dolce &Gabbana (just to name a few); she has definitely sealed her status as a supermodel in the making. And if that’s not enough, she won model of the year 2012 at the British Fashion Awards. British Vogue referred to her as the ‘star face’ of the season, and we couldn’t agree more. However, we are more interested in what Cara is wearing off the runway. We would describe her style as sophisticated with a quirky twist. She is spotted wearing a lot of items by Burberry (no surprise there) since she was the face of the brand for their 2012 Spring Campaign, which was shot by world renowned photographer Mario Testino. Seeing as she has been in the London social scene for some time now, having a personal shopper for a mum, and spending more and more time with the fashion legend herself, Kate Moss- we are sure she’s picking up a couple of great fashion tips! From bohemian to biker chic, Cara is not afraid to experiment with her style, making every look her own; it’s hard to go wrong. But fashion is not her only passion; she is also an aspiring actress, appearing in the theatricallythemed movie Anna Karenina as Princess Sorokina, alongside Keira Knightley and Jude Law. This was her first acting role although it was not her first opportunity. She was offered to play the part of Victoria Beckham in the Spice Girls musical but turned it down, saying that it would be a ‘career killer’. We’re glad she’s being selective in her acting choices. Even though she is assertively seeking a career in Hollywood, she has set her standards high. Not just accepting anything even if it’s being handed to her. As poised and collected as she may be on the runway, off the runway you will see a lot of faces being pulled by Miss Delevigne. She is not one to shy away in public, or hide her youthful sense of humor. She has arm-wrestled Dean Caten of DSquared at an after party in Milan, dressed up in a full-size panda costume when attending the charity auction of Pudsey bears for Children In Need, and at photo-shoots she is said to run around overly excited till she tires herself and falls asleep in the corner like a lab. Bless!

Harness Herione We have seen the harness pop up here and there but this fashion statement is definitely one to stay! Since it is so easy to add to any outfit, whether it is already in the stitching, a simple shoulder harness or a full waist piece, it is a quick way to pull an outfit together and make it stand-out from the regular day to day looks. It gives an added edge. It can be used as a daytime look, during the evening, a party, or dare we say it, as a work outfit. There are plenty of ways to experiment, so let’s have fun and reach higher heights with a harness!

Idiosyncratic Thespian Joseph Gordon Levitt Joseph Gordon Levitt is definitely one of the men to watch this season. He has come a long way from when his dimples first caught the world’s attention in his breakout role as an Alien in the 6 seasons of “3rd Rock from the Sun” to starring as the younger version of the character “Joe” (his real-life preferred nickname), in the science fiction movie, Looper. A movie in which he had to sit in a make-up chair for 3 hours every day to look like Bruce Willis, “older Joe”. Although they used tons of makeup and prosthetics, it was Levitt’s ability to mimic Bruce Willis’s mannerisms and posture that has dubbed him a true chameleon.

nown as a thespian in Hollywood, the singing, dancing, guitar and drum playing, exceptional actor really highlighted his many talents when he hosted Saturday Night Live. Awing the crowd as he reenacted the ‘make them laugh’ scene from Singing in the Rain; this included back flips against walls! The 31 year old actor can blatantly show off his skills and still be completely humble, having such modest qualities in his approach on life and his close relationship with his family; whom he praises often in interviews and on his Twitter account. His parents met as activists in California, spreading the message of peace and love. His brother, Dan, who passed away in 2010, was a photographer and flame thrower. When Joseph collected enough money from his television roles to support himself and his family he continued his education, attending Columbia University in New York to study history, literature, and French poetry. As much as Joseph likes to brush up on his French, and take extra steps in preparing for his roles that he throws himself so heavily in, his fashion sense has clearly not been

neglected. His style depicts his life. When Levitt is not working he opts for a very casual jeans and t-shirt look which he somehow pulls off understatedly, having a perfect balance of nerd/ rebel chic. He switches effortlessly from graphic tees to a tailored, three-piece suit; a look that he has mastered, most likely from the influences of his character in Inception. In his perfectly fitted suits he looks like an absolute stud, however the mix of his boyish charm, charismatic energy, and blasé attitude puts him in a class of his own. Regardless of the Hollywood obsession over actors, Joseph Gordon Levitt doesn’t seem to be moved by any of the hype. He hates the word celebrity and doesn’t hesitate to point out the mistakes made by society. His co-stars including Zooey Deschanel have commented on his change throughout the years. Having been extremely serious growing up, thinking girls were evil, walking through the halls not wanting to socialize with those he thought of as immature, he has let go of a lot since his younger days. “When I was younger, I wanted to be something. Now, I just want to be younger.” That explains the beanie hats, flip-flops and his love of Vans sneakers.

“Head in the clouds” An animation designed for Hermès by Nicolas Tourte And presented in Kuwait 13th of December 2012

Hermès is delighted to unveil “Head in the clouds”, an animation to be presented in Kuwait. Through the ten installations, Hermès objects such as a pair of Driver gloves, a Double sens bag or the Silkydaily diaries come alive with wit and humour revealing their surprising uses. Through French artist Nicolas Tourte’s reinterpretation, photography, sculpture and drawing are given a new twist thanks to information technology and video. With a touch of mischief, he invites us to take a step back and look at humanity in motion, as in his Silkydaily vehicles or the bathers in the “Piscine de Robinson”. Then we surprise a man struggling with a thread on an Etrivière bracelet and a woman who looks tiny next to a giant bracelet, creating a mise-en-abyme of the visitor in relation to the exhibits that mark out the space. The artist literally gives life to the objects placing them inside old furniture, in unexpected places or in a whirl of precious leathers and recycled materials: a river escapes from compact Copernic wallets, a tropical breeze makes Kelly wallets perspire and

The Prada “Crystals” windows feature a succession of dreamy and basic interiors. The various elements reinterpret classic Christmas themes in a contemporary context, which is an expression of modern and refined luxury. The lights and the colour white, both symbols of Christmas, characterise the installations’ design. The atmosphere created by the backdrop in crystal is evocative of timeless elegance and enhanced by different levels of lighting of a mirrored honeycomb structure, which overlaps with thick panels that recall rock crystals. Cartier d’Art explores an age-old decorative technique Rotonde de Cartier 42 mm watch, panther with granulation With its strong curiosity about the world and its wonders, this year Cartier has developed a passion for a goldsmith’s technique born in the cradle of civilisation:granulation. The reinterpretation of this millennia-old artistic craft is part of a desire to bring rare, sometimes forgotten crafts back to life, which Cartier adapts and renders even more beautiful. With granulation, Cartier d’Art takes a fresh look at a precious technique that dates from the first half of the 3rd millennium B.C. This highly sophisticated aesthetic reached its peak during the first millennium in Etruria with the famous period objects in “Etruscan granulation”. A veritable seedbed of gold granules, the granulation technique consists of creating small balls from threads of gold that are cut and then heated over a flame. The gold granules are then assembled one by one and fused with the gold plate in order to create the sensual relief of the motif.

One year after the spectacular launch of the X Fathoms at the Dubai Aquarium & Underwater Zoo, Blancpain is back with a world-exclusive vintage and modern Fifty Fathoms exhibition. Featured models range from the first modern diving watch presented almost 60 years ago to the latest creations of the Manufacture. In 1953, Blancpain presented the first diver’s watch indicating the remaining dive time on a locking bezel, to guarantee diver’s security, and featuring an innovative caseback to insure optimal water resistance. These patented technical achievements completed scuba equipment and greatly facilitated diving. Today, watches in the Fifty Fathoms collection remain the benchmark in their field and accompany explorers in their study of underwater ecosystems as well as intrepid free divers in setting new records. Equipped with a unidirectional rotating bezel, minimum guaranteed water resistance to 30 bar, a highly readable dial and a self-winding mechanical movement, each watch in the Fifty Fathoms iconic line combines watchmaking expertise with vital safety standards. The exhibition in Dubai presents for the first

time the main 1950’s innovations through official patents, original locking bezels and caseback components, as well as a selection of rare vintage Fifty Fathoms watches. It is inscribed in Blancpain’s efforts to inspire as many people as possible to learn about and become familiar with the underwater world. Convinced that people can only respect and protect what they love and can only love what they know, the Manufacture, through its diving watches, underwater photography exhibitions, and Edition Fifty Fathoms, serves a clear mission: Raise awareness. Transmit our passion. Respect and help protect the ocean. Conscious that no organisation alone can achieve the desired positive change in ocean protection, today, by the side of the National Geographic Society, Blancpain fully supports the Pristine Seas Expeditions. This program is an exploration, research, and conservation project to explore, survey, and help protect some of the last healthy, untouched places in the ocean. Thus, Blancpain once again helps increase the number of people knowing about and feeling concerned by this fascinating underwater universe.

Bokja – A Design Legacy Designers Hoda Baroudi and Maria Hibri are the women behind Bokja – a Lebanese furniture brand that celebrates the fusion of traditional and contemporary design. The Bokja story is one of recycling and breathing new life into once-treasured textiles from all over the world to create inspiring modern and eclectic items. textiles. We mostly even work with women. Ostoura: Can you tell us a little bit about the idea behind the designs? Bokja: Initially the concept of Bokja was to reinvent our tradition, and to breathe new life into it. So we use traditional textiles that are now disregarded or thought to be old fashioned. They have become invisible to people; we don’t see them anymore. This is why Bokja tries to present them in a contemporary style, so they would once again be considered appealing to the eyes, and be more edgy. We hope this would make young people more sensitive to the textile art and try to honor our tradition in this way. The past is not something to be forgotten. You have to really try to understand it and honor it. We have to move on and moving on is to adapt. It is mainly about combining past stories of the textiles with our craft projects onto the objects we create. Ostoura: Do you mean that each object has its own story; does this give objects different roles or even a ‘character’? Huda and Maria started Bokja in 2000 with a vision to employ age-old artisanal traditions and sensibilities of the East in the creation of contemporary furniture designs and decor items. The name itself is highly evocative – Bokja is an old description for the embellished velvet wrapping of treasured items for special occasions, notably the embroidered dowry of a bride.

luxury furniture exhibition at the Al Ostoura Lounge in Thuraya Mall from 3rd Dec to 6th December, 2012. Bokja participated in the event, which was a great success attended by Al Ostoura’s special customers, art galleries, architects and interior designers. Al Ostoura met with the designers to figure what makes them tick: Ostoura: What does Bokja mean?

True to their original vision and ideals, Maria and Huda use skilled local artisans to produce their designs and shun all forms of mass production. The result is one-of-a-kind pieces that embody a unique character and the highest standard of craftsmanship. Al Ostoura International Company hosted a

Bokja: Bokja is the wrap in which you put the hand-embroidered things made with love for the bride. It is something that is commonly used in different languages, but they always call it Bokja in the entire Arab world. Our story is a story of women; we are two women and we work mostly with these handmade, hand-embroidered

Bokja: In this collection, many designs were inspired by folk stories and fairy tales. We embroidered the famous characters from fairy tales on our pieces with oriental features. We tried to imbibe our Arabic Identity onto the characters of the tales. Other pieces also tell the stories in Lebanon and in the Arab world; we are trying to express our ideas without a severe political bent of mind or going extremely with a thought. We are just expressing spontaneous thoughts pertaining to what we see, and this is evident in our designs for chairs, sofas, danglers etc. We like to think that our things tell our story in a way, when they travel to different places. Our design process is not just about designing and being able to sell, we have a definite message that we are trying to say through what we do, and we like people to really be attuned to it.

69 Ostoura: It is evident that you combine many different materials in your artwork. How much you think this affects Bokja’s identity as a Lebanese brand? Bokja: Each Bokja piece has its own identity. It is made in Lebanon but it addresses the whole world, expressing there are no boundaries. We believe in the dialogue between cultures. We have presented sofas that were made using fabrics from different origins. We used fabrics from Italy, embroidered flowers from a dress that used to belong to Huda and put these next to fabrics from Afghanistan, Palestine, Brazil, and Africa. Our message was to say that although the fabrics come from different origins; they speak a common language when it comes to beauty and aesthetics. It isn’t necessarily about beauty only; it could be an unexpected harmony of something that is not thought to work together. Ostoura: How does your story reflect in the things you create? Bokja: We have years and years of influence. Over time the shores of Lebanon have been receptive to many civilizations. You have layers of civilizations from all over the world and this is what I think you see at Bokja. We are not just selling unique furniture; we were selling an identity, a work of art, something that can bring positive power to your home, and a smile on your face. Ostoura: What do you think is the link between your furniture and fashion? Bokja: I think it is nice to see creative design being implemented in different proportions. Moreover, using materials, working with colors and texture gives a special identity to a piece, which is a true crossover between fashion and furniture.

An Eclectic Introduction to Kuwait and your Home West Elm Furnishings Store

Taking a shift into the modern era, West Elm arrives in Kuwait, presenting a fresh experience of home furnishing with a twist of artwork design collaborations. For the first time outside North America, West Elm offers simple, sophisticated, and whimsical pieces with an extensive range of furniture sure to make any home look lively yet sleek from the inside and out. THETALK had the opportunity to meet with the Business Director of the West Elm and Williams-Sonoma retail brands for M.H Alshaya Co., Caroline Liddon, to learn of West Elm’s introduction into the Kuwaiti market, their unique collections, and her personal opinion on furniture design. Kuwait is a competitive market in terms of interior with places such as Ikea, Midas, and others. What makes West Elm stand out from the crowd? The approach of West Elm’s product development is quite unique in that it targets a number of different customer profiles. It does not merely focus on one customer; rather, it includes and aims toward the variety. West Elm will appeal to an urbanist as much as it would a classic consumer, as it would someone with far greater global influences. It also exudes a very eclectic approach to home styling- there will always be an items of furniture or accessory that could appeal to the whole spectrum of

customers. Furthermore, West Elm takes pride in its engagement with the local community. That is a large part of its roots, and from the beginning in Brooklyn, West Elm has always collaborated with local artists. These artists bring in their own influences into the product development which helps cement that eclectic approach it carries. Do you believe Kuwait is ready for this eclectic approach to interiors? Absolutely, with no question about it! Kuwaitis are well-travelled people that understand and appreciate all the various influences that come from around the world. I also believe that sort of globalization of taste within home furnishing is very much found here in Kuwait. They will completely appreciate the fact that the West Elm store incorporates a differing look from one visit to another. That is very much the strength of West Elm- it has products flowing on a regular basis, so every two weeks, one can notice new products, different flooring, and a different floor set. I think the joy of West Elm lies in its visual excitement; it really is quite a visual feast. Let’s say you meet someone on a budget, with little time, who would like just one piece of furniture that could change the entire room. What would that item be, in your opinion?

Color! Color is the one thing that will change any room in the quickest and most economical way. One can redress a room with cushions or throw on a change of curtains, and right away, the vibe of the room can change. Color also has the ability to affect the way we feel as well as our moods, and some people can constantly alternate between something that is quite vibrant in a particular room to something more cool and relaxing in another. Personally, I prefer cool colors, such as whites and pale grays, as I find it very current. If you look at the West Elm, you will see that the base colors offered are mostly flax and gray- they build upon a neutral base, and dependent on the season, they can be continuously redressed with more vibrant products. Add some excitement to your home today by visiting the West Elm home furnishing store, located at the Grand Avenue- The Avenues.

We sat down with the accomplished racer to learn more about the sport and about the man dominating it since 2006. How did you begin jet-skiing professionally? I started jet-skiing since I was a kid; I was always on the water doing all kinds of sports. Then when I was studying at Suffolk University in Boston I started racing there. Since I was 16 years old, I was at the legal age to race, I began doing it professionally and entered the World Championship in 2006, I won! And that triggered a more serious passion for the sport. What were the next steps you took after you won the Championship? I got sponsored, so I became more updated on the sport. I knew where I had to be, what races I needed to compete in. It went from a hobby to a profession and all of a sudden I was entering in an average of 12 races a year all around the world. What do you have to do in order to prepare for a race? If I have an upcoming race I’m out on the water 2-3 times a week. I exercise at Al Corniche Club 4-5 times a week, whether I have a race or not, I swim and do cardio, I really enjoy working out; but Jet Ski training is very important. If you exercise well but don’t train on the water, no matter how strong you are, no matter how fast your Jet-Ski is, you will be outrun. You can be half way through a race then become worn out, you have to work on your resistance and stamina, and that has to be done on the water. That is a lot of working out, is it exhausting? Physically, sometimes, but I do really enjoy it, even though it does affect my social life. But mentally, it can be very exhausting. As a racer, I am meant to train and race. But I take it a step further and really engage in the preparation of my Jet-Ski. If the race is in Dubai I have to make a 12 hour drive with the Jet Ski to ensure they get there safe. I could easily leave it to someone else, but people may not understand the proper care for them and how delicate they can be.

If it is further, I just have to ship the Jet-Ski and hope for the best, but yes, that can be very mentally exhausting. Sometimes it takes a lot longer than expected and that is nerve wrecking. For example my US race; I shipped my Jet-Ski 3 weeks before the Championship. It was meant to arrive 2 weeks before I get there, it arrived a day before the race. That caused a lot of complications. You need at least a week with your Jet-Ski before a race so that you understand the climate, the humidity, the wind speeds, so that you can adjust your Jet-Ski accordingly. Have you had any other complications when it came to racing? My main issue was that I ride well and train very hard but my Jet-Ski wasn’t the best. I would fix and modify it without the best knowledge on the subject. Before there were 2-stroke engines, now there are 4. It’s the difference between having 6 cylinders and 12 cylinders in a car. With the 4-strokes you can have a super-charge or turbo engine. Thankfully I’m working with a new mechanic. He is amazing! He’s like a machine. We work really well together, so I’m working even harder so that I can highlight his great work and do him justice by keeping up with the speeds and strength of the Jet-Ski. And then there are injuries. I have dislocated one of my shoulders twice. In my recent race in Thailand, that I just came back from, I fell off the Jet-Ski at full speed and landed on my chest. I won second place, but after the race I would cough up blood so we thought it was internal bleeding. But thankfully I’m ok. The worst injury though has to be when a fellow racer was behind me and so was a huge wave, he jumped the wave as I was turning and his Jet-Ski landed on my thigh. I couldn’t ride for 2 months after that. I’m lucky though; compared to others my injuries are very minor. Is Jet-Skiing dangerous? It was definitely safer before. But now race tracks are more intense and we are reaching dangerous speeds since the mechanics of the Jet-Skis are developing more.

LOCAL TALENT Comparing to 5 years ago, we would reach speeds of 65 miles an hour, now its 90 miles an hour in less than 6 seconds. I’ve seen 2 deaths in the past 2 years. But from my point of view the danger is in the race tracks. Some of us had complained that the tracks are too dangerous but the organizers thought otherwise. How does your family feel about you racing? They’re great! They are proud and no matter where I am in the world they’re always the first to be updated on everything. They are definitely my number one priority and my biggest supporters. As well as my sponsors of course; Kuwait Airways and Al Markaz Al Mali, they have helped me a lot, I’m truly grateful for all the support I’ve received. Do you have any side hobbies? Well as I mentioned racing is my passion, family is my priority and then I work for a Finance company, thankfully I get sports holidays when I need to compete. But with all that when I have time I love to play football and squash. But there is the risk of injury in those sports, or for example with squash, it negatively affects my back and joints although it is a great way to exercise. But for my kind of routine it hurts so I avoid them as much as I do love them. Funnily

THETALK / January / 2013

enough I don’t enjoy cruising on a Jet-Ski. It is definitely not something I do for leisure. I think of it competitively and take it too seriously so I don’t see the joy in just taking it out and going slow, I would have to go fast and long distances, with a race in mind. Nothing close to a joy ride! So, when I can I go out on a boat. I would love to learn how to cook. It’s fun. A day of cooking at a beach house with music and good company is my favourite way of spending my time, so I would like to work more on that. Do you have any goals for the future? I would like to open my own business. Meet a great girl and get married. But those things will happen in the right time. Till then I focus on myself. There’s always room for improvement and I’m always striving to be the best version of myself. I work to build myself as a person and when it is the right time to start a business as the next step into my growth I will do it then, same thing with marriage, if I feel like I’m at the right point as a person and would be a great husband I would do that. I would love to have kids. All those are a huge responsibility and I am not one to take it lightly. We’re glad to have had the chance to meet such an ambitious, hard working Kuwaiti. Yousef’s next race is in Dubai this month so let us wish him the best of luck!

Bimba & Lola It was a fun filled Ladies Night at Meat & Co. in 360 Mall. Combining the stunning fashion from Bimba & Lola and the exquisite fine dining of Meat & Co. restaurant, it was a night to never forget. Guests enjoyed a delectable three-course meal as they watched a special presentation of the spanish based brand’s autumn/winter collection. For founders and designers Uxia and Maria Dominguez, the label is very much a family affair (the name came from their pet dogs, Bimba and Lola, hence their greyhound motif), and one that has nurtured a very personal design aesthetic. “To create Bimba & Lola we look for inspiration in nature,

art, film - even in friends and family,” Maria Dominguez told us. “We know each other really well and have great respect for one another, which helps when reaching agreements.” “This collection is inspired by the hyper-culture concept, a mix of tradition with modernity, the rustic and the technological,” Uxia Dominguez explained. “Because of this, we have achieved a combination of rich and technical fabrics and geometric prints with the more ornate.” We loved the collection, available at Bimba & Lola, 360 Mall and Olympia.

Perfume As An Art Kilian Hennessey

Heir to a long line of businessmen who were pioneers of luxury, Kilian decided to take up the torch of the family tradition – for him creating a new luxury brand was definitely a challenge worthy of his predecessors. As the Kilian brand evolves and mature, the one aspect which remains constant is that each and every product created embodies ultimate sophistication and timeless luxury. In Kuwait recently, THETALK met Kilian to learn more from the man who is becoming a modern-day master of perfumes.

For Kilian, it is a jet-setting lifestyle. Touring

brought something new to the market.

the region he’s due to head back home to spend just a few days with his family before jetting off again. But it’s a life that he embraces, it is a passion pursued.

TT: Bringing oudh-based perfumes to the Middle East is a very brave thing to do, wouldn’t you agree?

THETALK: You could have selected from amongst many luxury fields to build your brand. But perfume demands an extreme passion and commitment. Why did you choose perfumes, or did perfumes choose you? Kilian Hennessey: It was really very much like this. Everywhere I go I look for inspiration. In fact, the reason I am here in the Middle East right now is as the result of a previous visit and my discovery of oudh. In the region there are thousands of perfumes based on oudh. What I did was take selections of a variety of different oudhs, we burned them, and then we captured the essence of the bakhoor. Using this we’ve

KH: If that had been purely what I set out to do, then yes. But here I have created a fusion of two styles of perfume. I’ve combined the occident and the orient in to a scent. This way the scents have the strong impact desired by wearers in the region, they are based around signatures that have a symbolism in both worlds. TT: Was it a complex process? KH: As a perfumer I have access to over 3,000 materials. I thought I knew it all. But I had never had oudh presented to me in any perfume house. Its use is controlled. In the past it has been abused and the source was

being devastated. Now, however, things have changed and its managed use is being opened up once more. TT: Do you feel at all intimidated coming to a culture that is so knowledgeable about perfumes yet so distinct from your own? KH: I think intimidated is not the right word. But I was certainly aware that I had to step up my game to bring my perfumes here. I’d say that I have come here now with confidence. My aim in establishing the brand was in order to seek a return to the traditional values of perfume making. I believe that, although every day still presents learning experiences, I have achieved this in a large degree. And where better to seek approval from than this region? Kilian’s perfumes are available throughout Kuwait at Wahran stores.

Bust those Winter Blues We are all prone to feeling down and low in this time of year. So we at Royale Hayat have listed the best ways to banish those pesky blues

Massage: a massage is a great way to destress, and with wearing constricting layers and pantyhose there is a definite need to improve blood circulation this season. Exercise: Whether it is an hour at the gym or a jog/run down gulf road, any sort of exercising that gets your heart racing is sure to leave you feeling lifted. We don’t need to list the benefits of this lifestyle essential however ‘it’s too cold outside’ is no excuse. Regular exercise improves your body’s ability to adapt to changing climates. Don’t forget to stretch: Seems simple enough right? A lot of us forget, with coming deadlines, you may be plastered in front of a computer screen, all the while clenching against the cold. That can strain your muscles and wreak havoc on your body in the long run. It is best to start everyday with a good full body stretch and repeatedly throughout the day. Florescent lights: as unflattering as these bright lights may be, they change the melatonin levels in your brain that restrains depression. So if you feel your mood is getting worse look to change your environment to somewhere florescent-lit. In general, changing your environment on a regular basis helps combat negativity.

into processed food, dressing, canned goods, and restaurants. Be aware of your salt intake and keep it to a minimum. Salt causes bloating and no one feels good when bloated and a few days feeling that way can be a major downer.

Peppermint oil: Have a little vile handy to get a mood booster when needed. Take a whiff and when you’re in need of a little extra, rub a couple of drops across your nose behind your ears and massage a little on your temples.

Healthy snacks: keep your energy balanced throughout the day so that you don’t suffer from a hunger crash or energy fluctuations that can leave you feeling exhausted and mentally drained at the end of the day. A handful of almonds, a banana or tangerines are great snacks to keep you going.

Stay hydrated: We may not feel as thirsty as we did when the sun was blazing down on us but your body can get just as dehydrated. Sipping water is better than guzzling it down. And since our recommended daily allowance is 8 glasses we recommend sipping water very frequently throughout the day. Have an extra dose pre & post workout, before and after baths and hot showers and before going to bed. Avoid salt: We don’t realize how much salt goes

Winter Wanderlust Let us embrace the season with this time of year’s biggest sport; Skiing! Whether you want to actually engage in this recreational activity or just bask in all its glory, we have chosen the crème de la crème of ski destinations.

THETALK / January / 2013

Aspen, USA It’s the ultimate western ski town, with Victorian architecture rooted in its mining days, a dining scene to rival the coasts’, and an international clientele that mixes Milan shopping with mogul-hopping. Long known as a favorite playground of the rich and famous, you are bound to bump into a number of celebs such as Antonio Banderas, Heidi Klum, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Kate Hudson and Goldie Hawn, just to name a few. Enjoy their famous cheese fondue and truffle fries and dine with the stars.

Banff, Canada

An enduring symbol of the Canadian Rockies, this French château-cumScottish castle rises above the spruce trees in a cluster of fairy-tale towers and turrets. The wild ranges of ice-mantled peaks along Canada’s Continental Divide have lured fair-weather travelers for more than a century. But it’s only in the last three decades that the major resorts have stayed open year-round, and gradually the wintertime secrets of the

Canadian Rockies have been revealed. The uncrowded downhill ski areas combine deep powder and near-wilderness scenery. You can ski-tour on acres of untouched terrain, sleigh-ride into dark evergreen woods, and (the latest rage) go dogsledding through alpine valleys. There are three characteristics that Banff has above the rest: recent renovations, lots of western Canadian hospitality, no glitz or pretension.

Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy Cortina’s scenery is dazzling all on its own. The tiny town, where charming chalets are festooned with flowering geraniums, is surrounded on all sides by the spiky, rough-hewn Dolomite Mountains. The skiing around Cortina d’Ampezzo (which hosted the 1956 Winter Olympics) is legendarily beautiful. The steep plunges and uninterrupted sight lines here have been used as a backdrop for many films, including Cliffhanger, the original Pink Panther, and the James Bond flick For Your Eyes Only.

St Anton, Austria Not only is it considered the birthplace of the modern downhill technique, but St. Anton also has one of Europe’s wildest après scenes, with seasonal residents kicking up their heels at legendary bars like the Krazy Kanguruh. Before holding last year’s World Ski Championships, the resort spent $100 million on improvements—adding a new gondola and moving the rail line away from the village center, so you no longer have to cross the tracks to hit the lifts.

THETALK / January / 2013

St Moritz, Switzerland St. Moritz was Switzerland’s glitziest resort before glitzy was even a word. St.-Moritz is not your average ski resort. It’s the kind of place where polo tournaments are played on a frozen lake and sponsored by Cartier. Where you need a letter of recommendation to sled with the tobogganing club. Where the gear on the slopes is Gucci, the fashion on the streets, Chanel.

Audrey Hepburn’s favourite Ski destination and you wouldn’t question the icon’s choice would you? However, everything in St.-Moritz—from hotel rooms to lift tickets to a cup of coffee—carries a high price tag. So if you’re looking for bargains, you’re probably better off choosing a different ski resort.

Courchevel 1850, France

You’ll never be short of things to do and see in chic and unique Courchevel 1850. The ultimate skiers’ playground and a magnet for the wealthy, Courchevel is the glamorous heart of Les Trois Vallées. With a lift system linking to Meribel and Val Thorens, guests can enjoy access to one of the most exciting and extensive ski areas in the world, suited to both families of varying levels and advanced skiers too. These benefits, coupled with the glamorous style, make Courchevel the ski destination of choice for the rich and famous. Source:

Restaurant Review Indulgence at Magnolia Bakery

In 1996, Magnolia Bakery opened its first location on a quiet street corner in the heart of New York’s West Village. From its inception, Magnolia has been cherished for its classic American baked goods, vintage decor and warm, inviting atmosphere. And it has been publicized internationally by its cult following, including in Hollywood both off and on screen. Seventeen years later, opening numerous branches across the US and worldwide, they have brought this gem to Kuwait. With an array of freshly made desserts daily, an adorable warm setting and the sweet sweet scent that fills the air, Magnolia Bakery has become a THETALK favourite! Having tried one of the New York branches, we are excited to have an identical edition right in our neighborhood. Make sure to try their desserts featuring their uber famous swirls on the first floor of Al Hamra Tower.

January can be a personally influential month for you, dear Capricorn. The year ahead brings strong opportunities for both work and play. A partner can have important revelations around the 9th a time when something about yourself or your personal plans might also come to light. Professional and financial matters are especially strong from the 12-14th. There may be a need to rework projects around the home or legal matters in the last week of the month. However, it’s better to rethink plans rather than push them ahead at this time

(Dec. 22-Jan. 20)

Horoscopes ARIES (Mar. 21-April 20) You begin the year in fine form, with an attitude that says you’re ready to take care of business. CANCER (June 22-July 22) Close relationships receive top billing this month, and you are at your most accommodating and attentive. A personal revelation or relationship drama can occur around the 9th when the Moon is Full in your sign, and the outcome can be quite positive

(July 23-Aug 22) The year begins with strong energy and heightened intelligence for work, health, and fitness routines. It’s a good time for organizing your home and your finances. Financial matters can become a little sticky starting in the last week of January, so it’s a good idea to get on top of your budget before then.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22) Errands, paperwork, making connections, and reaching out are in high focus as the year begins for you. PISCES (Feb. 20-Mar. 20) The year begins on a good note, with friendly energy and benefits through your connections. On the 12-14th, something from your past or something that was previously hidden, such as a good deed, comes to light and brings you benefits.

GEMINI (May 22-June 21) You’re in a planning and dreaming stage this month. It’s a time for reassessing your goals and formulating new ones. Midway through 2013, you’ll be raring to go, but for now, life is more about getting in touch with where you are headed

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 23) You begin the new year feeling energetic and on top of your game. Educational matters are strong, you’re feeling supported, and domestic matters are hectic but running well. You’re likely making all sorts of plans for personal projects, and you are especially attentive to your physical appearance and health.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) The year 2013 is likely to open up doors for you in your work and with relationships. You begin the year with strong financial ideas and plans. There can be some grudges to deal with. The month ends on a busy note, with plenty to do but much help from friends as well.

Two chic starlets, the same dress, and a completely different vibe. A few months ago, Christina Ricci attended New York Fashion Week in this spring-like embroidered floral dress by Valentino, fast forward a couple months and Olivia Munn is spotted wearing the exact same dress for a breast cancer awareness party. But who wore it best? Christina seems to have darkened the floral print by pairing black shoes and accessories to the look, while Olivia took this sweet and simple look over the edge by adding a spike Eddie Borgo bracelet with studded Valentino heels. We have to say we agree with the votes on this one, fashionable adding a daring twist to a vibrant high-fashion creation.
