We in Sutton U3A are celebrating our 30th Anniversary this year and we are very proud to have reached that milestone. We are a unique and exciting self-help movement providing recreational, educational and social activities for semi-retired and retired people in and around Sutton. Dates for diary It's time once again for our annual celeb ration of Black History Month sponsored by the Sutton Black History Group. We have planned an exciting series of events during the month. Black History Month starts with the launch event on Sunday 1st October from 3pm-7pm. The event will take place at the Sutton Circle Library, Green Wrythe Lane, Carshalton, SM5 1JJ, in the presence of The Worshipful Mayoress of Sutton, Cllr Jean Crossby. The launch event will be an evening of music, refreshments, an exhibition plus Keynote speech on the theme of Black Music Through The Ages in celebration of black heritage. Why not volunteer for Home-Start Sutton?? Home-Start is a voluntary organisation supporting families with a young child under five who are struggling. We recruit volunteers to visit families in their own home, to offer emotional and practical support and friendship. A Preparation Course will be starting on Thursday 28 th September to run each Thursday for eight weeks (excluding half term) completing on Thursday 23 rd November. Expenses are paid. Award winning Sutton based project MAPS is looking for local heroes to become volunteer mentors. Could you be that person?
VOLUNTEERS WANTED? MAPS are voluntary organisation supporting vulnerable children and young people in the London Borough of Sutton. We are loo king for volunteer mentors to support a young person each week for up to a year, to be a listening ear and to give them space and time to unpack life. No qualifications are needed for this role. We are looking for volunteers who have a positive attitude towards children and young people and a desire to help them achieve their full potential. Someone who is a positive role model, patient, calm, a good listener and who is non-judgemental. Does this sound like you? If you have a couple of spare hours during the day, evenings or weekends why not use your skills to support a young person. Training will take place in Sutton on Friday 13 and Saturday 14 October 2017.
