03 THE STUDIO DOOR

Before the world became as it is today… If a picture is worth a thousand words, then The Studio Door is about to say a lot with its national exhibition Once Upon A Time: Fairy Tales, Fables and Myths. The exhibition features over 50 works in a showcase of sculpture and paintings that reflect upon age old stories. Thank you to juror Christine Knoke of the Mingei International Museum for taking up the challenge to curate an outstanding show. Join us on the evening of the 12th for our exhibition reception. From cave drawings to comic-books, storytelling in art never seems to diminish through the ages. It's not surprising that many artists are avid readers or that they find inspiration from literature. The Studio Door is partnering with San Diego Public Library - North Park on June 4 for a series of special events that we have branded as ART + READING. What a perfect opportunity to pull out your library card to check out a few books and re-read the stories that we remember from out youth. Make sure to explore the space when you visit. In addition to our hard working studio artists, we have transformed one of our studios into a gallery within a gallery. The exotic whimsy of local acrylic artist Julie Harris is being featured showcasing her enchantment with her childhood home of Saudi Arabia. Do you follow and support KPBS? Last month, Beth Accomando’s news segment on The Studio Door opened up two more outings for us with the reporters of KPBS. San Diego State University lecturer Jon Baumunk and I were guests on a news segment discussing how to avoid the pitfalls of becoming a starving artist in San Diego. Both the MidDay radio segment with Maureen Cavanaugh and the Evening Edition news report with Peggy Pico are featured within this issue of The Monthly. June is a month abundant with beginnings. Art Career Cafe is kicking off their premiere HR Salon at The Studio Door on the 25. I’ll be leading a one-day Art-to-Market Road Map Workshop on the 27. Also, new six-week sessions are also starting for Creating an Effective Artist Portfolio as well as Acrylic Painting and Mixed Media. Registration is open. Don’t delay. If you are looking to submit to an upcoming show, you have a few weeks left to submit for deliberate distortions: jazz in today’s art. Complete details at CaFÉ. Until next time, keep living art. Cheers,

KATRIN AUCH

Katrin’s love of myths and fairy tales is a mainstay of her work. She finds unique beauty in the part of the story where things are bleakest, which usually leads her to research the original, often uncompromising versions of the stories. Her subjects tend to find a place of peace in their despair, leaving the viewer to decide if they find a happy ending. On the Cover - A Special Kind of Death BEST IN SHOW

ArtCareerCafe.com invites you to:

That Arts and Culture HR Meet-Up Thing Thursday, June 25, 2015

5:30 PM - 7:30 PM @ The Studio Door in North Park

Are you in charge of HR in your organization? The Arts and Culture HR Meet Up Thing is an opportunity for anyone in the local arts and culture scene who is charged with hiring, (and sadly sometimes firing), HR or personnel to find their counterparts in other similar organizations. As we know, many in our field are trained to do HR and so many more aren't. So I wondered ..... what if we got together to find a way to learn more from each other and support one another in this critical but hidden (and not well supported) aspect of our creative workforce? We at the Art Career Cafe thought it might be fun to see if there is something more to this idea and where it might go. A short program is planned, but it's really about the networking. Of course, there will be bites and beverages too! Come and find out who your compatriots are. The event is sponsored by local arts consultant and creative entrepreneur Victoria Plettner-Saunders. Victoria is Chief Strategist at v.p.s. cartographie and Creative Director for Art Career Cafe. The Cafe is partnering with Patric Stillman and his super new artists enterprise, The Studio Door. If you have any questions about the event, Victoria, or the Cafe, please contact Victoria at victoria@artcareercafe.com. We hope to see you there! And oh . . . yah . . . it's free but The Studio Door is a fabulous yet finite space and we also need to know how many to prepare the bites and beverages for, so please RSVP by June 23 if you're interested in attending.
